Most fights in Rust are decided before anyone fires: by who had their crosshair in the right place, who knew their gun’s recoil, and who picked spray, burst or tap for the range. The good news is that every one of those is a skill you can train, and you do not need to lose a single kit to do it.
This Rust aim training guide gives you a 20 minute daily routine, the order to learn each gun’s recoil, when to spray and when to burst now that the aim cone grows as you hold the trigger, the mouse and FOV settings that make aim easier, the best free aim train servers, and how to practise on your own offline server with bots and Reactive Targets. Every console command has a red Copy button, so you can paste it straight into the F1 console.

What Rust Aim Training Actually Trains
“Aim” in Rust is really four separate skills, and you get better fastest when you train them one at a time instead of just playing more:
- Recoil control. Every automatic gun kicks up and sways side to side in a repeatable way. You learn to pull against it so a spray stays on a body. This matters most with the Assault Rifle, which hits the hardest and kicks the hardest.
- Crosshair placement. Keeping your crosshair at head height on the corner or doorway where an enemy will appear, so you barely need to move the mouse when they do. This is free and it wins more fights than flick speed.
- Tracking. Staying on a strafing or jumping target while you spray. Bots on aim train servers and scientists on your own server are the best practice for it.
- Range and fire choice. Knowing whether to spray, burst or tap, and how much to lead and hold over for bullet drop with rifles like the Bolt Action Rifle and L96.
A 20 Minute Rust Aim Training Routine
Short, focused practice every day beats a four hour session once a week. Run this warm up before you join your main server, in the same order every time, so your hand is warm when the first fight comes:
| Drill | Time | Gun | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wall sprays | 3 min | Thompson or Custom SMG | Empty full magazines into a wall from 10 m. Watch the bullet holes and try to keep them in one tight group. |
| 2. Burst control | 3 min | MP5A4 | Fire 5 to 8 rounds, let go, let the gun settle, repeat. Learn how quickly the spread resets. |
| 3. AK sprays | 4 min | Assault Rifle | Full sprays at a wall from 10 m, then 30 m. Pull down and counter the side to side sway. |
| 4. Flicks and taps | 3 min | Semi-Auto Rifle or P2 | Single shots at heads, snapping between targets. Accuracy first, speed later. |
| 5. Moving targets | 4 min | Any automatic | Track strafing bots on an aim train server or scientists on your own server. |
| 6. Long range | 3 min | Bolt Action Rifle or L96 | Shoot at 100 to 200 m. Learn how far to hold over for drop and how much to lead a running player. |
Keep the same sensitivity, crosshair and attachments for every drill. If you change three things at once you will never know which one helped.
Rust Recoil Control: Learn the Guns in This Order
Start with the easiest recoil and only move up once you can keep a full magazine on a body-sized target at 20 m. Jumping straight to the AK is the most common reason new players give up on spraying.
| Gun | Difficulty | Recoil feel | How to pull |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom SMG | Easiest | Light upward climb | Gentle steady pull down |
| Thompson | Easy | Almost straight up | Straight pull down, best gun to learn on |
| MP5A4 | Easy to medium | Climb with a small zigzag late in the magazine | Pull down, small corrections near the end |
| LR-300 | Medium | Steady, predictable climb | Firm pull down, little sideways movement |
| Assault Rifle (AK) | Hard | Sharp kick up, then sways left and right | Hard pull down first, then counter the sway |
Spray, Burst or Tap: Pick Your Fire by Range
Rust guns are not pure patterns any more. Facepunch’s combat changes added an aim cone to automatic weapons: every shot you hold lands a little wider than the last, and the spread resets when you let go of the trigger. That is why a perfect AK pull still misses at 100 m, and why good players at range let go of the trigger on purpose.
- 0 to 30 m: spray. The target is big enough that a wider cone still hits. Hold the trigger and fight the recoil.
- 30 to 80 m: bursts. Fire 5 to 8 rounds, release for a moment so the cone resets, then fire again. You land more shots than a full spray.
- 80 m and beyond: taps. Single shots aimed at the head or upper chest, or switch to a semi-auto like the Semi-Auto Rifle or M39.
Standing still while you fire is also more accurate than shooting on the move, and crouching while you spray steadies the gun further. Move between bursts, not during them, when you can.
Best Rust Settings for Aim
The single best setting is one you never change. Muscle memory is built for one exact mouse movement, so every change to DPI or sensitivity sends you back to the start.
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse DPI | 400 to 800 | Most Rust players use a low DPI with a low in-game sensitivity for steadier sprays. |
| Sensitivity | About 25 to 40 cm per 360 | Medium: slow enough to pull an AK down smoothly, fast enough to turn on someone behind you. |
| Field of view | 90 | The widest view Rust allows, so you see more around the edges of your screen. |
| Gun model size | graphics.vm_fov_scale false | Shrinks the gun model so it covers less of the screen while you spray. |
| Crosshair | Small dot or cross | A clean centre point, see our crosshair codes. |
| Frame rate | As high and steady as you can | Smooth frames make tracking far easier than any graphics setting. |
Paste these in the F1 console. Change the sensitivity number to suit you:
graphics.fov 90graphics.vm_fov_scale falseinput.sensitivity 0.3Coming from another shooter? Use a sensitivity converter such as Aiming.pro’s Rust calculator to match your cm per 360, so your old muscle memory carries over. Best Rust Aim Training Servers
Aim train servers give you a free kit, instant respawns and targets or other players to shoot, so a practice session costs nothing. Search the server name in the Community or Modded tab of the server browser.
| Server | Region | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| UKN.GG Training Grounds | EU and US | FFA, arenas, gun game, scrims, shooting targets and aim bots, wiped daily | Warm ups and real players |
| Rustoria RTG (Rustoria Training Grounds) | EU | Combat arenas, aim train, targets and recoil training | Recoil drills and 1v1s |
| Other aim train servers | All regions | Search “aim train” or “training grounds” in the server browser | Lower ping in your region |
| Your own server | Your PC | Unlimited ammo, any gun, Reactive Targets, scientists | Focused solo practice |
Console players: aim train servers exist on Rust Console Edition too. Search “aim train” in the console server browser and pick the one with the lowest ping.

How to Aim Train on Your Own Offline Server
The quietest place to practise is a free Rust server running on your own PC. No queue, no other players, unlimited guns and ammo, and you can set it to daytime forever. Our how to host a Rust server guide gets one running in about 30 minutes, then you make yourself owner and use admin commands.
Once you are admin on your server, these commands set up a practice session in seconds:
inventory.give rifle.ak 1
inventory.give ammo.rifle 1000inventory.give target.reactive 5
god trueenv.time 12- Reactive Targets are real in-game items (100 wood, 150 metal fragments and 1 gear at a Workbench Level 1). Place them at 10 m, 50 m and 150 m. They fall back when you land enough damage, then go back up, so you can run taps and sprays at each range.
- Scientists strafe, take cover and shoot back, which makes them the closest thing to a real fight. Visit a monument with your god mode on, or use the
spawncommand (typespawn scientistand let the console’s autocomplete show the current names). - Swap guns freely. Change
rifle.aktorifle.lr300,smg.mp5,smg.thompsonorsmg.2to work through the recoil ladder. Every shortname is in our Rust item IDs list.
Running a server for a group? Plugins such as Gamemode Aim Train add moving bots with per-weapon hit and headshot stats.
Best Attachments for Aim Training
Practise with the build you actually run on wipe day. For most automatic guns that means a Holosight plus Muzzle Brake, the standard spray build.
| Attachment | Effect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Muzzle Brake | Removes 50% of recoil, costs 15% damage | Spraying with the AK, LR-300 and SMGs |
| Holosight | Cuts aim cone by 20%, clean reticle | Default optic for almost every gun |
| Weapon Lasersight | Cuts aim cone by 20%, steadier hip fire | Close range and room clearing |
| 8x Scope | Long range zoom | Bolt Action Rifle, L96 and M39 at 100 m+ |
| Silencer | Hides flash and sound, slightly less velocity | Roaming, but practise with it so drop does not surprise you |
Train both with and without the Muzzle Brake. Early in a wipe you will often spray a bare gun, and a pull built on half the recoil will send the bare gun into the sky.
Review Your Fights With combatlog
The fastest way to fix a habit is to see it. Type combatlog into the F1 console after a fight and Rust lists your recent hits and hits on you: the weapon and ammo, which body part, the distance, and health before and after. If you keep losing fights at 60 m with the AK, the log will show whether you are missing or just losing the damage race.
combatlogMany players bind it to a key so it is one press away. The full bind is in our Rust console commands guide.
Common Rust Aim Training Mistakes
- Changing sensitivity every week. Pick one and keep it for at least a month.
- Learning the AK first. Learn the pull on the Thompson and MP5A4 and the AK comes much faster.
- Full spraying at every range. Past 30 m, bursts land more shots because the aim cone resets.
- Shooting while sprinting sideways. Stop or crouch for the burst, move between bursts.
- Only practising on a wall. Wall sprays teach the pull, but real fights need tracking. Finish every session on moving targets.
- Training for hours when tired. 20 focused minutes a day builds more than one long tired session.
Rust Aim Training FAQ
What is the best way to aim train in Rust?
Practise 20 minutes a day on an aim train server such as UKN.GG or Rustoria’s training grounds, or on your own local server. Start with wall sprays on the Thompson, move up to the MP5A4, LR-300 and AK, then finish on moving targets and long range taps. Keep the same sensitivity the whole time.
What are the best Rust aim training servers?
UKN.GG Training Grounds (EU and US) and Rustoria’s training grounds (RTG) are the best known. They give free kits, instant respawns, arenas, gun game, shooting targets and aim bots. You can also search “aim train” or “training grounds” in the server browser to find one with low ping in your region.
Which Rust gun should I learn recoil on first?
Start with the Thompson or Custom SMG, which mostly climb straight up, then the MP5A4, then the LR-300. Leave the Assault Rifle for last: it has the hardest kick and a side to side sway on top of the climb.
Should I spray or burst in Rust?
Spray under about 30 metres, fire 5 to 8 round bursts from about 30 to 80 metres, and use single taps beyond that. The aim cone widens with every shot you hold and resets when you release the trigger, so short bursts land more shots at range.
What is the best sensitivity for Rust?
There is no single best number, but a medium sensitivity of roughly 25 to 40 cm of mouse travel per full 360 degree turn suits most players, usually 400 to 800 DPI with a low in-game sensitivity. The most important thing is to pick one and stop changing it.
Can I aim train offline in Rust?
Yes. Host a free Rust server on your own PC, make yourself owner, then give yourself guns, ammo and Reactive Targets with admin commands like inventory.give rifle.ak 1. Scientists at monuments make good moving targets.
Are recoil scripts allowed in Rust?
No. Recoil scripts and mouse macros are cheating, and Easy Anti-Cheat bans accounts that use them. Rust game bans are permanent, so it is never worth the risk.
Does crouching reduce recoil in Rust?
Crouching and standing still make your shots more accurate than firing while moving, so many players crouch for a spray at close or mid range. Moving while you fire adds inaccuracy, so move between bursts instead of during them.
