PT Boat Rust: Scientist Boat Patrols, Turrets, Loot & How to Steal One (2026)

Rust update news, November 2026

Until now you only met scientist boats if you sailed out into the deep sea. That changed with the November 5, 2026 update. A rare set of scientist PT boats and RHIBs now rolls in from the map edge, patrols in and around the main island and leaves again, with no map marker or notification. They only pick fights with players who look like a threat, they can be stolen, and they carry Blueprint Pages for the new blueprint system.

We first wrote this guide from Facepunch’s mainisland_roaming_scientistboats commits while the feature was on staging. It is now live and checked against the official Printed and Polished devblog and the live loot data.

TL;DR Live since November 5, 2026: up to 2 scientist boat groups patrol the main island for up to an hour (30 to 60 minutes in the commits, which also set a 5 to 8 hour timer), then leave. There is no map marker or notification. Like the patrol helicopter, they only attack geared players or anyone who shoots them. A new AI steers around obstacles, swaps targets, and puts a new driver at the wheel if you kill the first one. Boats can be stolen. PT boat and RHIB dryboxes each have a 20% Blueprint Page chance. Both PT boat 50 cals were rewritten and deal x0.75 damage.
Rust scientist boats at a glance: groups of 1 to 2 PT boats and RHIBs spawn every 5 to 8 hours and stay 30 to 60 minutes, fight geared players or anyone who attacks like the patrol helicopter, and RHIBs have a 20 percent Blueprint Page chance

What Is the PT Boat in Rust?

The PT boat arrived with the Naval update on February 5, 2026. It is a scientist patrol boat crewed by scientists, armed with two turrets (a dual 50 cal at the front and a 50 cal at the back), and until now it lived in the deep sea next to scientist RHIBs. Facepunch described them as vessels that “roam the Deep Sea in coordinated groups looking for players to engage”, sometimes guarding the hackable crate on a ghost ship.

The November update brings them closer to home. A new event sends roaming groups to the main island, and a separate change stops anyone taking a PT boat out of the deep sea, “just like the other boats”. For the full boat lineup, see our Rust boats guide.

How the Main Island Boat Patrols Work

How Rust roaming scientist boat patrols work: 1 to 2 boat groups spawn on the map edge every 5 to 8 hours, travel inwards to the main island coast, patrol as close as 35 metres from land and leave the map after a random 30 to 60 minutes
Spawn, patrol, leave: a timed coastal event.

The commit from October 26 reads: “New roaming boats: 1-2 boat groups will now patrol off the coast of the main island periodically before leaving the map.” Later commits filled in the details:

SettingValue
Groups per event1 to 2 boat groups, spawning together
How oftenRare: every 5 to 8 hours per the commits
WarningNone. No map marker, no notification
How long they stayUp to an hour (random 30 to 60 minutes per group), then they head out
Where they spawnOn the edge of the map, then travel inwards
Distance from shoreAs close as 35 m (changed from 100 m on Oct 28)

The egress timer has its own server setting, so modded and community servers can tune how long the boats hang around. If you build near the water, check our biomes guide for coastal base spots, and expect a visit every few hours. Because there is no marker, the first sign is usually the turrets.

Facepunch also rebuilt the boat AI for this update: a new movement system lets scientist boats avoid and navigate through obstacles, they follow and swap targets more smoothly, they reposition when none of their shooters can see you, and if the driver dies another scientist takes the wheel.

Who the Scientist Boats Attack

Who Rust scientist boats attack: armed or geared players they can see are attacked, naked or unarmed players are ignored unless they shoot first, and the crew gives up 45 seconds after losing sight of a player
Fresh spawns can walk the beach in peace.

Facepunch made the roaming crews behave like the patrol helicopter: “Roaming crews only fight geared or armed players they can see, or anyone who attacks them.” So a naked fresh spawn on the beach is safe, while a kitted group in a boat is fair game. A few more rules from the October 28 tuning pass:

  • Boats in a group give up 45 seconds after losing sight of you, instead of passing your position back and forth forever.
  • When a boat’s driver dies, another scientist takes the wheel.
  • PT boat turrets look around when they have nothing to shoot at, so they spot you faster.
  • On servers with ai.ignoreplayers on, PT boat scientists respect it.

PT Boat Turrets After the Nerf

Rust PT boat turrets after the November 2026 balance pass: the front dual 50 cal does 0.75 times damage (was 1) with a wider aim cone of 1 (was 0.2) and a regular crosshair, the rear 50 cal also does 0.75 times damage and has a new smoother viewmodel
Both 50 cals hit for 25% less from this update.

The turrets were rewritten in October (Facepunch shrank a roughly 2,000-line file to about 300 and gave them proper viewmodels, so they no longer stutter), and on November 2 they were rebalanced:

TurretDamage scaleAim coneOther
Front dual 50 cal0.75 (was 1)1 (was 0.2)Regular crosshair instead of a dot
Rear 50 cal0.75 (was 1)UnchangedNew viewmodel, reload fixed

These numbers apply when you crew a PT boat yourself too, so a stolen PT boat hits a little softer than it did in October.

Scientist Boat Loot

Rust scientist boat loot: scientist RHIB and PT boat dryboxes have a 20 percent Blueprint Page chance after the book was removed, and the scientist crew drop regular scientist loot
Pages for the new Workbench 2 tech tree.

The boats tie straight into the new blueprint system, where Blueprint Pages pay for nodes on the Workbench 2 tree. The live loot data gives both the Scientist PT Boat Drybox and the Scientist RHIB Drybox a 20% chance of a Blueprint Page. During testing PT boats briefly had a 20% Blueprint Book chance, which Facepunch pulled the same day (“Sorry this was too good!”). On top of that, the crew drop normal scientist loot.

How to Steal a Scientist Boat

How to steal a Rust scientist boat: shoot the driver first though another scientist takes over, clear the whole crew so the turrets go quiet, board and drive since boats can be stolen, and deep sea PT boats cannot leave the deep sea
Clear the crew and the boat is yours.
  1. Engage from cover. Shoot from the shore or a cliff rather than open water, where two turrets can focus you.
  2. Kill the driver, then the rest. A new scientist takes over driving when the driver dies, so the boat keeps moving until the crew is gone.
  3. Board and take the wheel. The commit says plainly: “Boats can be stolen and taken by players.”
  4. Keep it fuelled. A RHIB runs on low grade fuel; our RHIB guide covers fuel, seats and decay.

PT boats you find in the deep sea stay there: they can’t be taken out to the main island. With the November update, the deep sea itself is gated behind the lighthouse repair.

Tips for the New Scientist Boats

Rust scientist boat tips: shoot from land because cover beats open water, holster weapons on beaches so you are ignored, use rockets to stop a boat fast, bring rifle ammo, loot boats for Blueprint Pages and heal up after the 50 cal fire
Pick the fight on land, not at sea.
  • Holster on the beach if you just want to pass by. Unarmed and ungeared players are ignored.
  • Use height. Cliffs and rocks give you cover the boats don’t have.
  • Rockets work. A rocket is the fastest way to stop a boat, though you risk the loot.
  • Farm pages. With patrols every few hours and a 20% page chance per drybox, a coastal base can pick up Blueprint Pages through the wipe.
  • Watch the clock. Each group only stays 30 to 60 minutes before it leaves the map.

See everything else in the patch in our November 2026 update hub, and check the force wipe countdown for when it goes live.

Rust PT Boat FAQ

What is a PT boat in Rust?

A scientist patrol boat added in the Naval update (February 2026). It is crewed by scientists and armed with a dual 50 cal turret at the front and a 50 cal at the back.

Where do scientist boats spawn in Rust?

They roam the deep sea, and since the November 2026 update up to 2 boat groups also come in from the map edge every few hours and patrol around the main island for up to an hour, with no map marker.

Do scientist boats attack everyone?

No. The roaming crews only fight geared or armed players they can see, or anyone who attacks them, the same rule as the patrol helicopter.

Can you steal a PT boat in Rust?

Yes. Boats from the roaming groups can be stolen once you clear the crew. PT boats in the deep sea cannot be taken out of the deep sea.

What do scientist boats drop?

Scientist RHIB and PT boat dryboxes each have a 20% chance of a Blueprint Page (a Blueprint Book drop was tested and removed). The crew drop regular scientist loot.

Were PT boat turrets nerfed?

Yes. On November 2 both 50 cals went to 0.75 damage scale (from 1) and the front turret’s aim cone widened from 0.2 to 1 with a regular crosshair.

When were roaming scientist boats added to Rust?

With the Printed and Polished update on November 5, 2026.
