You hear it before you see it: the thud of rotors, then a long burst of gunfire across the hill. The Patrol Helicopter is Rust’s flying NPC boss. It tours the island every few hours, shoots anyone who looks geared, rockets their cover and, if you bring it down, drops four crates that can hold an M249, C4 and rockets.
This Patrol Heli Rust guide covers how often it spawns, what makes it attack you, its weapons and health, the loadout to bring, how to take it down by the rotors, the flee rules added in 2025, what the heli crates drop, and how to keep the loot once the shooting stops.

What Is the Patrol Heli in Rust?
The Patrol Helicopter, usually just called “heli”, is an AI gunship controlled by the server. It flies in from the edge of the map, visits monuments, hunts players it decides are a threat, and leaves again if nobody takes it down. You cannot fly it, buy it or repair it. It exists to be fought.
Do not mix it up with the Attack Helicopter, the player vehicle you buy at Air Wolf for 2,250 scrap, or the Minicopter. Many players say “attack heli” when they mean the patrol heli, but they are completely different things. The patrol heli is the one that shoots at you, and the one that drops heli crates.
| Stat | Patrol Heli (vanilla) |
|---|---|
| Type | Server event, AI controlled |
| Spawn timer | About every 2 to 4 hours |
| Body health | 10,000 HP |
| Main rotor | About 900 HP |
| Tail rotor | About 500 HP |
| Weapons | Two side guns, rockets, incendiary (napalm) rockets |
| Drops | 4 heli crates plus a harvestable wreck |
| Hit by SAM sites | No, only on modded servers |
Patrol Heli Spawn Timer
On a default server the heli event fires about once every 2 to 4 hours. There is no fixed clock, so you cannot plan to the minute, but on a busy server you will usually see several per day. Modded servers often change the timer, call more than one heli at a time or make tougher versions, so check your server’s info if the numbers seem off.
When it spawns it heads for a monument, then moves on to the next one. Since the 2024 changes it also roams more between monuments instead of parking over one, so it can turn up near your base even if you are nowhere near a radtown. Monuments with safe zones, like Outpost and Fishing Village, are off limits for fighting.
What Makes the Patrol Heli Attack You?
The heli does not shoot every player it sees. It picks targets based on what you are carrying and wearing. According to Corrosion Hour’s testing, it becomes hostile when:
- You have a ranged weapon on your hotbar that is better than a bow. Even if you are not holding it.
- You wear more than two pieces of clothing or armour, or a radiation suit.
- You damage it. Any hit pulls its attention onto you.
- It has line of sight. Being inside a building or behind rocks breaks it.
A fresh spawn with a rock, a torch and a bow is usually ignored. That is why the heli is mostly a problem for geared players and roaming groups, not for someone farming in a hoodie.
Patrol Heli Weapons and Health
The heli has two attacks, and you need to respect both:
- Twin side guns. Long bursts of rifle fire from the side doors. They are not very accurate at range, but in the open they will chew through any armour quickly.
- Rockets. The heli lines up and fires a volley of rockets, mixed with incendiary rockets that leave burning napalm on the ground. These are what kill players hiding behind cover.
Its body has 10,000 HP, far too much to shoot through with rifle ammo. The trick is its two weak spots: the main rotor at about 900 HP and the tail rotor at about 500 HP. Destroy both and the heli goes down, no matter how much body health it has left. Every serious heli takedown is a rotor takedown.
What to Bring for the Patrol Heli
- A long range rifle. The L96 or Bolt Action Rifle lets you hit the rotors from far enough away that its guns miss.
- An automatic rifle. The AK or LR-300 is the classic heli gun. Controlled bursts at the tail rotor do the job. An M249 is even better if you have one.
- HV ammo. HV rounds fly faster, which makes leading a moving rotor far easier.
- Armour. A metal facemask and chest plate help you survive a burst while you get back to cover.
- Meds. Syringes and large medkits. You will take damage on every pass.
- A jackhammer. For the wreck afterwards (see the tips below).
How to Take Down the Patrol Heli
- Pick your spot first. Big rocks, cliffs and solid monument buildings are ideal. You want cover you can step behind when the rockets come, and a clear view of the sky when you step out.
- Pull it. Shoot it once it is close enough to hit. Damage makes you its target.
- Aim for the tail rotor first. It is the smaller pool, about 500 HP. The best moments are when the heli turns side-on or flies away from you after a rocket run.
- Duck when it lines up. When it turns to face you and slows down, a rocket volley is coming. Get behind cover, then pop out again.
- Finish the main rotor. About 900 HP. Once both rotors are gone the heli spins out and crashes.
Two or three players with automatic rifles make this far easier, because the heli can only chase one person at a time while the others shoot. Solo kills are possible with an L96 and good cover, but expect to use a lot of meds.
Patrol Heli Flee Rules (2025)
Facepunch reworked the heli in 2024 so that, after taking enough damage, it breaks off and flees. That made fights more of a server-wide event, but it also meant one group did the work and another finished it miles away. The Friends with Benefits update on 3 July 2025 tightened the rules:
- It flees at most 1 grid.
- It always flees toward a monument.
- The flee location is shown on the map, so everyone knows where the fight is going.
- It will not flee if you take it from near or inside a monument.
- When it dies it tries to crash at a nearby monument, but never at safe zone monuments like Outpost or Fishing Village.
In practice that means the last part of most heli fights happens at a monument, which is also where other groups are likely to be. Plan for a second fight after the first one.
Patrol Heli Loot
A downed heli drops 4 heli crates around the wreck. They are on fire when they land and you cannot open them until the fire burns out, which takes a few minutes. Each crate rolls from the helicopter crate loot table. Some of the headline chances per crate:
| Item | Amount | Chance per crate |
|---|---|---|
| M249 | 1 | 10% |
| 5.56 Rifle Ammo | 8 to 120 | 27.7% |
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4) | 1 to 2 | 25.6% |
| Rocket | 3 | 25% |
| High Velocity Rocket | 3 | 15% |
| Homing Missile | 4 | 15% |
| MLRS Rocket | 2 | 15% |
| L96 Rifle | 1 | 0.6% |
Because there are four crates, a 10% M249 chance per crate works out to roughly 34% per heli, which makes the heli the best single source of M249s in the game. The crates also roll rifles like the LR-300, explosive ammo, tech trash and other high tier loot.
Then there is the wreck. The burning heli body can be harvested like an ore node. With a jackhammer it gives about 800 charcoal, 1,500 metal fragments and 70 HQM, which is a great boost for upkeep and armoured building.
Patrol Heli Tips
- Expect company. A heli fight is loud and shows up on the map once it flees. Have one player watch the approaches while the crates burn.
- Do not stand in the fire. Burning crates and napalm hurt. Wait a few metres back and loot the moment the flames stop.
- Loot fast, then leave. Grab the M249, explosives and rockets first. Ammo and components can wait if a team is pushing you.
- Heal between passes. The heli circles and comes back. Use that gap to syringe up behind cover.
- Bring gear you can lose. The heli is a coin flip early in a fight; do not bring your best kit until you know you can finish it.
- Pair it with Bradley. Groups that can take the heli can usually take the Bradley APC at Launch Site too. Our monuments guide shows which spots the heli can crash at.
Patrol Heli Commands (Server Owners)
You cannot call the patrol heli as a normal player on a vanilla server. If you run your own server and are an admin, these console commands are handy for testing:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| heli.call | Spawns a patrol heli that starts a normal patrol |
| heli.calltome | Spawns a heli and sends it to your position |
| heli.strafe | Makes the heli do a strafe run on your position |
| heli.drop | Spawns a heli right above you |
| patrolhelicopterai.flee_damage_percentage | Sets how much damage makes it flee; 1 or more turns fleeing off |
Want the heli and every other event fresh? Every server resets on the monthly force wipe, so check when the next force wipe is before you plan a big heli day.
Patrol Heli FAQ
How often does the patrol heli spawn in Rust?
On default servers the patrol helicopter spawns roughly every 2 to 4 hours. Modded servers often change the timer.
How much health does the patrol heli have?
The body has 10,000 HP. The main rotor has about 900 HP and the tail rotor about 500 HP. Destroying both rotors brings the heli down no matter how much body health is left.
What is the best way to kill the patrol heli?
Shoot the rotors with HV ammo from good cover. Take out the tail rotor first, then the main rotor. An L96, Bolt Action Rifle, AK, LR-300 or M249 all work, and two or three players make it much easier.
Why is the patrol heli attacking me?
It targets players with a ranged weapon better than a bow on their hotbar, players wearing more than two pieces of clothing, and anyone who damages it. A lightly dressed player with only a bow is usually ignored.
How many crates does the patrol heli drop?
It drops 4 heli crates. They are on fire when they land and can only be looted once the fire burns out, which takes a few minutes.
Does the patrol heli drop an M249?
It can. Each heli crate has a 10% chance of an M249, so a full heli kill gives about a 34% chance of at least one.
Do SAM sites shoot the patrol heli?
No. On vanilla servers SAM sites do not target the patrol helicopter. They only target player aircraft like the attack helicopter and minicopter. Some modded servers change this with plugins.
Is the patrol heli the same as the attack helicopter?
No. The patrol heli is an AI event gunship you fight for loot. The attack helicopter is a player vehicle you buy at Air Wolf and fly yourself.
