Rust Building Guide · 2026

Every base you have ever built started with one. The sheet metal door is the first real door in Rust, it costs 150 metal fragments, and it is the difference between keeping your sleeping bag and waking up naked on the beach. It is also the door most players hold onto for way too long.

This guide covers the whole picture: exact crafting cost, how fast you can get one on wipe day, how many rockets, satchels, C4 and explosive ammo it takes to break, the soft side nobody tells new players about, and the moment you should stop using them.

TL;DR The sheet metal door has 250 HP and costs 150 metal fragments. It is a default blueprint, so no research and no workbench needed. Breaking one takes 1 C4, 2 rockets, 4 satchels or 63 explosive 5.56 rounds. Explosive ammo is the cheapest at roughly 1,575 sulfur. Hang it so it opens into your base, because the soft side saves raiders a satchel.

What Is the Sheet Metal Door in Rust?

The sheet metal door is a hinged door that slots into any standard doorway. It sits one step above the wooden door and several steps below the garage door. In game terms it is a medium strength door that laughs at bullets and melee, but folds fast to explosives.

The important part is that it is a default blueprint. You know it the moment you spawn, on every wipe, forever. No research table, no tech tree scrap, no workbench requirement. That is why it is the universal wipe day door and why almost every starter base in Rust is wearing one within the first twenty minutes.

Sheet Metal Door Crafting Cost

The recipe is about as simple as Rust gets. One ingredient, no gears, no high quality metal, no workbench.

150 fragments, no workbench, no research. The cheapest metal door in the game.

Metal ore smelts one to one into fragments, so 150 fragments means 150 metal ore in a furnace. That is nothing. A single metal node gives you enough ore for roughly four doors, and you will hit several on the way to your build spot.

Do Not Forget the Lock A door with no lock is a doorway with extra steps. A Key Lock costs 25 metal fragments and takes ten seconds to make. A Code Lock costs 100 metal fragments and is the one you actually want if you play with anyone. Budget for it in the same trip.

How to Get a Sheet Metal Door Fast on Wipe Day

The whole point of this door is speed. Here is the fastest realistic route from beach spawn to a locked metal door, assuming a vanilla server.

  1. Farm 150 metal ore. A stone pickaxe on metal nodes is fine. Two full nodes covers the door plus a code lock with change left over.
  2. Get wood for the furnace. A furnace needs 100 stone and 200 wood. You need it anyway for everything else you will build this wipe.
  3. Smelt while you build. Drop the furnace, load it with ore and low grade fuel, then put your foundation and walls down while it cooks. Dead time is wasted time on wipe day.
  4. Craft, place, lock. Fifteen seconds to craft, one second to place, then the lock goes on immediately. Not after you loot one more barrel. Immediately.

You can also find sheet metal doors as loot in barrels, crates and military crates, but the drop rate is low enough that it is a bonus and never a plan. Crafting is faster than looting for an item this cheap.

Sheet Metal Door Raid Cost: Rockets, C4, Satchels and Explo Ammo

This is the section both sides came for. Here is exactly what it takes to open a 250 HP sheet metal door, sorted by sulfur so you can see the real cost instead of the item count.

The Cheapest Way to Raid a Sheet Metal Door

Explosive 5.56 ammo at 63 rounds and 1,575 sulfur. It is the best value on paper and it is also the loudest thing you can possibly do. You are emptying two full AK mags into a door for about twenty five seconds. Everyone within earshot knows the address.

Satchels at 1,920 sulfur are the honest middle ground for early wipe. They are cheap, they need no gunpowder tech, and four of them go on fast. Just craft a spare, because duds are real and a dud satchel on a door is 480 sulfur gone.

C4 at 2,200 sulfur is the pro move despite being the second most expensive option here. One charge, twelve seconds, door gone. When you are online raiding and the clock matters more than the sulfur, that gap is worth paying.

Rockets Are a Trap Here Two rockets and 2,800 sulfur to open a door that costs 150 metal fragments is the worst trade in raiding. Rockets are for walls and floors. If your only explosive is rockets, shoot the wall next to the door instead and get a wider hole for the same spend.

The Sheet Metal Door Soft Side, Explained

Doors in Rust are not equally tough on both faces. The side the door swings toward is the soft side, and it takes noticeably more damage per hit. In practical terms that turns a four satchel door into a three satchel door, which is 480 sulfur handed to whoever is raiding you.

Hang your doors so they open inward. The hard side should be the side raiders see.

The fix takes two seconds. Stand outside your base and place the door so it opens away from you, into the building. Now the hard side faces the world and anyone hitting it pays full price. If the door swings out toward you when you open it from outside, you built it backwards. Pick it up with a hammer and flip it.

Raiders, the same rule works in reverse. If you can get an angle on the inside face of a door through a window, a doorway or a hole you already blew in a wall, hit that face. Free discount.

Sheet metal is the cheap seat. Garage doors are where the real value lives.

The uncomfortable truth is that a sheet metal door only buys you 50 more HP than wood and still dies to a single C4. Meanwhile the garage door costs double the fragments plus two gears and more than doubles the HP, with no soft side to exploit. Sheet metal is a wipe day door, not a wipe long door.

Sheet Metal Double Door

The sheet metal double door is the same 250 HP for 200 metal fragments, and it fills a double doorway instead of a single one. Same raid cost, same C4 count, same everything except the frame it goes in and the extra 50 fragments.

Use it where you actually need the width, like a garage bay for a minicopter or a wide compound entrance. Do not use it on your loot room. Two single doors in an airlock beats one double door every single time, because a raider has to pay twice instead of once.

Airlock Math One sheet metal door is 4 satchels. A two door airlock is 8 satchels, or 3,840 sulfur, for 300 metal fragments of investment. That is the single best return on fragments in early wipe Rust, and it costs you nothing but a bit of floor space.

When Should You Upgrade Off Sheet Metal?

The moment you hit a Workbench Level 2 and have gears, which is usually day one or day two. Here is the honest priority order:

  • Loot room first. Whatever protects your boxes gets the best door you own. Garage door minimum, armored if you have the high quality metal.
  • Airlock second. Front entrance takes a garage door as soon as you can spare 300 fragments and 2 gears.
  • Everything else can stay sheet metal. Honeycomb access, farm rooms, decoy doors on a shell base. Cheap doors in low value spots is correct play, not laziness.

Where sheet metal genuinely stays the right answer is decoys. A base covered in identical cheap doors makes raiders guess, and every wrong guess costs them real sulfur. Pair that with a solid outer shell and you have made yourself an expensive target for very little metal. If you are working out those numbers for a specific base, the Rust raid calculator does the sulfur math for you.

Sheet Metal Door Placement Tips

  • Open inward, always. Covered above, but it is the single most common mistake in the game and it is free to fix.
  • Code lock every door, not just the front one. Raiders push through the cheapest path. An unlocked interior door turns a two door raid into a one door raid.
  • Repair after every attempt. Hold a hammer with metal fragments in your inventory and hit the door. Damage carries over between raids, and a half broken door is a bargain for the next person who finds it.
  • Never leave a door outside building privilege. It will decay, and decayed doors are free entry. Everything you place needs to sit inside your tool cupboard range.
  • Do not stack doors on a wooden shell. A sheet metal door on a twig or wood wall is theater. Raiders will just break the cheaper wall beside it. Match your door tier to your wall tier, or spend the metal on stone walls first.
  • Watch your door frames on soft side walls too. A perfect door in a soft sided wall is still a soft sided base.

Rust Sheet Metal Door Skins

The sheet metal door has one of the largest skin catalogues in Rust, partly because it has been in the game forever and partly because it is the door people see first. Prices on the Steam Market run from a few cents for common drops up to genuinely absurd numbers for the old rare ones.

Two things worth knowing. Skins are cosmetic only, so a skinned door has the exact same 250 HP and the exact same raid cost as a default one. And you can apply skins at a repair bench, which means doors you already placed can be reskinned without breaking or replacing them.

There is a small tactical angle here too. A wildly expensive looking skin on your front door tells raiders you have money. Some players run plain doors on purpose for exactly that reason.

Sheet Metal Door FAQ

How many C4 for a sheet metal door in Rust?
One timed explosive charge, roughly 2,200 sulfur. It is the fastest way through at about twelve seconds, and it works on both the hard side and the soft side.
How many rockets for a sheet metal door?
Two rockets, roughly 2,800 sulfur. That is the worst value option on this list. If rockets are all you have, hit the wall next to the door instead.
How many satchels for a sheet metal door?
Four satchel charges on the hard side, roughly 1,920 sulfur, or three on the soft side. Craft a spare, because satchels dud often.
How much explosive ammo for one sheet metal door in Rust?
63 rounds of explosive 5.56 rifle ammo, roughly 1,575 sulfur. It is the cheapest method by sulfur but takes about twenty five seconds of continuous shooting, so expect company.
How do you get a sheet metal door in Rust?
Craft it. It is a default blueprint that every player knows from spawn, it needs no workbench, and it costs 150 metal fragments. They also drop from barrels and crates, but crafting is far faster.
How much HP does a sheet metal door have?
250 HP. That is 50 more than a wooden door and 350 less than a garage door.
Does the sheet metal door have a soft side?
Yes. The face the door swings toward takes extra damage, which drops a four satchel raid to three. Place doors so they open into your base and the hard side faces outward.
What workbench do you need for a sheet metal door?
None. You can craft it with no workbench at all in fifteen seconds. A workbench only speeds the craft up.
Is the sheet metal door or the garage door better?
The garage door, by a mile. It has 600 HP instead of 250, no soft side, and takes nine satchels instead of four. Sheet metal wins only on speed and cost on wipe day.
Can you pick up a sheet metal door?
Yes, with a hammer, as long as it is at full health, inside your building privilege and within the pickup window. That is how you flip a door you placed the wrong way around.

Final Thoughts

The sheet metal door is not a strong door. It is a fast one, and on wipe day fast beats strong. 150 fragments and fifteen seconds turns an open shell into something a naked cannot walk into, and that is all you need for the first few hours.

Just do not fall asleep on it. The second you have a Workbench Level 2 and a couple of gears, the good doors are one craft away. Until then, hang them so they open inward, lock every single one, and let the raiders pay full price.
