Drop Box Rust: Craft Cost, How It Works, Placement & Raid Cost (2026)

Rust base building guide, 2026

Every time you open your door, you give door campers a chance. The drop box fixes that: a small metal box set into a wall that lets you, your team or a trading partner push items into your base from outside, without anyone opening a door.

This drop box Rust guide covers the craft cost and blueprint, how the front and rear work, how to place and rotate it, its health and raid cost, how it compares to the mail box and vending machine, and the best ways to use one.

TL;DR A drop box costs 200 metal fragments at a Workbench 1 (30 seconds, 15 at WB2, 7 at WB3). The blueprint costs 30 scrap at a research table or on the Workbench 1 tech tree, or you can buy one for 40 scrap at Bandit Camp. The outside has 1 input slot and a button; the inside holds 16 slots that only the rear can loot. It has 100 HP and breaks to 1 rocket, 2 satchels or 3 molotovs. Set its direction with R before placing: it cannot be rotated or picked up afterwards.

What Is the Drop Box in Rust?

The drop box is a deployable that goes into a wall of your base. The game describes it as a box “deployed on walls so that players can input items from the exterior of the building for safe keeping. You can only access the submitted contents of the Drop Box from the rear.”

Think of it as a one-way mailbox for loot. Anyone outside can put items in. Only someone standing inside, at the rear, can take them out. It has no lock and needs none, because the rear is already behind your walls and your code lock.

How to Craft a Drop Box in Rust

How to craft a drop box in Rust: 200 metal fragments at a Workbench 1 make 1 drop box; research table 30 scrap, Workbench 1 tech tree 30 scrap node, craft time 30, 15 or 7 seconds, recycles to 120 metal fragments
One ingredient, one workbench.
DetailDrop box
Recipe200 metal fragments

Research table30 scrap
Tech treeWorkbench 1 node, 30 scrap

Recycle120 metal fragments (80 in a safe zone recycler)

The drop box is not a default blueprint. Research one at a research table for 30 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 1 tech tree for the same 30 scrap. Both prices follow the 2026 uncommon tier (older guides list 75 scrap, the price before November 2025).

Tip If you have no blueprint on wipe day, the Bandit Camp Building Supplies vendor sells drop boxes for 40 scrap. That is cheaper than learning it only if you need one box.

How Does a Drop Box Work?

How the Rust drop box works: the outside front has 1 input slot and a button anyone can use; items move into the inside rear, which has 16 storage slots that only the rear can loot; a full rear stops taking items
The front takes items, the rear stores them.

A drop box has two sides:

  • The front (outside) has one item slot and a button. Put an item, or a whole stack, in the slot and press the button. If the rear has a free slot, the item moves inside.
  • The rear (inside) is a 16 slot container, like a small storage box. Only players at the rear can open it and take items out.

One player can run it alone, and anyone can deposit, including strangers. Nobody at the front can see what is already inside. When all 16 rear slots are full, the button does nothing, so somebody inside has to empty it now and then.

How to Place a Drop Box

How to place a drop box in Rust: step 1 pick a full wall with free space on both sides, step 2 aim from inside so the front faces outside by default, step 3 press R to flip it, step 4 empty the rear or pipe it to a box
Get the direction right first.
  1. Pick a full wall. The drop box sits through a solid wall and needs free space on both sides. The wall should have nothing else on it, such as a light or another drop box.
  2. Aim at the wall from inside. Placed from inside, the front faces outside and the rear faces into your base, which is what most players want.
  3. Press R to flip it before you click if you want the slot on the other side.
  4. Keep the rear empty, or move items out automatically with an industrial setup.
Watch out Once placed, a drop box cannot be rotated or picked up. A box facing the wrong way hands your rear storage to anyone outside, so check the direction before you click.

Drop Box Health and Raid Cost

Rust drop box raid cost: 100 HP, 3 molotovs with no sulfur, 1 rocket at 1,400 sulfur, 2 satchel charges at 960 sulfur, 1 C4 at 2,200 sulfur, 34 explosive 5.56 rounds at 850 sulfur, 12 beancan grenades at 1,440 sulfur
The drop box is a weak spot, not a vault.

The drop box has 100 HP and can be repaired with a hammer. It is much weaker than the wall around it, and what it guards is the wall, not the box itself. Raiders who break the drop box or the wall behind it can reach whatever is in the rear.

Drop Box vs Mail Box, Vending Machine and Storage Boxes

Drop box vs other storage in Rust: drop box takes any item for 200 frags at Workbench 1; mail box takes notes only for wood and frags with no workbench; vending machine handles trades for 20 HQM at Workbench 1; small box 18 slots for 100 wood; large box 48 slots for 250 wood
Each container has its own job.

Mail BoxNotes only100 wood, 25 fragsNoneMessages
Vending MachineSell and buy orders20 HQM, 3 gearsWB1Shops and trades
Wood Storage Box18 slots, inside only100 woodNoneSmall storage
Large Wood Box48 slots, inside only250 wood, 50 fragsNoneMain loot room

The mail box is the only other one-way container, and it only accepts notes. If you want people to pay you for items, a vending machine is safer. For everything else coming into your base from outside, the drop box is the tool.

Best Ways to Use a Drop Box

Best ways to use a drop box in Rust: skip the door while campers wait, dump sulfur and ore on farm runs, let teammates without codes give loot, take trades from neighbours, auto-sort with a storage adaptor, and leave notes for the base owner
Get loot inside without opening a door.
  • Beat door campers. Coming back from a farm run with a full inventory, bank the loot through the drop box instead of opening the door.
  • Team drops. Friends or new teammates who are not authorised on your locks can still give you items.
  • Trades with neighbours. Agree a deal, and they pay into the box without ever seeing inside.
  • Auto-sorting. A drop box takes one storage adaptor, so an industrial conveyor can pull deposits into large boxes and keep the rear empty.
  • Notes. Drop a note in for whoever owns the base.

Rust Drop Box Tips

Rust drop box tips: check the facing and flip with R before placing, keep the rear empty because a full box takes no deposits, pipe it into a large box with a conveyor, it is cheap to replace at 200 frags, repair it with a hammer, and it is not loot-proof because 3 molotovs break it
Habits that keep your drop box useful.
  • Put it in an airlock or loot room wall, never straight into your main loot room, so a broken box only opens a small space.
  • Empty it often, or pipe it out. A full box stops taking items.
  • Do not use it as storage. At 100 HP, anything you leave in the rear is easy to reach.
  • Repair it after fights. Fire and explosions around your base wear it down.
  • Count it in your upkeep plan. Like every deployable it decays when your tool cupboard runs dry.
