Jar of Honey Rust: How to Get Honey, Stats & Every Use (2026)

Rust farming guide, 2026

A Jar of Honey is the end product of every beehive and every honeycomb you pull out of an oak tree. It looks like a snack, but it is one of the most flexible items in Rust: a food that clears radiation, the key ingredient in the Honey Bandage and Apple Pie, a fishing bait and a steady trickle of scrap at Bandit Camp.

This jar of honey Rust guide covers what honey does when you eat it, the two ways to turn honeycomb into honey (and why one of them is better early), where wild hives are, how to farm your own, and every use worth spending a jar on.

TL;DR A Jar of Honey gives +50 calories, removes 15 radiation and heals 3 HP over time, and stacks to 20. You cannot craft it. You get it from honeycomb: extract a honeycomb in your inventory for a 90% chance of honey and a 10% chance of a Beehive Nucleus, or cook it in any furnace for guaranteed honey. Honeycomb comes from wild hives on oak trees (4 to 7 each) or from your own Beehive (300 wood and 1 sheet metal at a Workbench 1). Spend honey on the Honey Bandage (2 jars + 4 cloth), the Apple Pie (2 jars, 2 apples, 3 wheat), fishing bait, or sell it at the Bandit Camp for scrap.

What Is a Jar of Honey in Rust?

The Jar of Honey is a food item that arrived with Rust’s beekeeping system in the Crafting Update of March 2025. The in-game description sums it up: good for reducing hunger and radiation, or could be saved for recipes. The source of the glass jar, Facepunch admits, is a mystery.

Honey sits at the end of a short chain. Bees make honeycomb, either in a wild hive hanging from an oak tree or in a Beehive at your base. You then turn each honeycomb into one jar. There is no recipe and no blueprint for honey itself, so the only way to get more is to get more honeycomb.

That chain got a lot more important in September 2026. The Honey Bandage went live with the Breach and Clear update on September 3, and it eats two jars per craft. Honey is no longer just a snack and a few scrap. It is now a healing supply.

Old numbers still float around Some older guides list honey at 60 calories, and one item page shows 500 calories and -150 radiation in its table. Current item data agrees on +50 calories, -15 radiation and +3 HP over time, and those are the numbers we use.

How to Get a Jar of Honey: Honeycomb to Honey

How to get a jar of honey in Rust: extracting 1 honeycomb in your inventory gives a 90% chance of a jar of honey or a 10% chance of a Beehive Nucleus; cooking honeycomb in a furnace gives honey 100% of the time but never a nucleus; about 0.7 seconds in a furnace, 0.1 in a Large Furnace, 0.4 in an Electric Furnace
Extract for a shot at a nucleus, cook for guaranteed honey.

Every jar starts as one honeycomb, and you have two ways to convert it.

  • Extract it in your inventory. Select the honeycomb and press Extract. Each one gives a Jar of Honey about 90% of the time and a Beehive Nucleus about 10% of the time. You get one or the other, not both.
  • Cook it in a furnace. Drop honeycomb into any furnace and every comb becomes honey. It is fast: about 0.7 seconds per comb in a regular furnace, about 0.1 seconds in a Large Furnace and about 0.4 seconds in an Electric Furnace, which needs no wood. The catch: cooking never gives a nucleus.

The rule is simple. Extract until you have the nuclei you need, then cook. A nucleus is what powers a Beehive (and it is the main ingredient of the Bee Grenade), so early in a wipe a 10% roll is worth more than the 10% of honey you give up. Once your hives are running, cook everything and stop losing combs to nuclei you do not need.

Where to Find Honey in the Wild

Where to find honey in Rust: wild beehives hang from oak trees in temperate forests and drop 4 to 7 honeycomb each; the bees attack, so wear a hazmat suit or use fire and water to calm them; extract the combs to hunt for a nucleus
Wild hives are the starting point for every bee farm.

Before you own a hive, honey comes from natural beehives on oak trees. Look up while you farm wood in temperate forests: the hive hangs from the branches. Break it and it drops 4 to 7 honeycomb.

The bees do not take that well. Breaking a wild hive releases a swarm that chases and stings you. A Hazmat Suit keeps them off, and fire or soaking yourself in water helps too. On a fresh spawn, hit the hive, grab the combs and keep moving.

Wild hives are also how most players get their first nucleus. Extract the combs instead of cooking them, and a stack of wild honeycomb will usually turn up one.

How to Farm Honey with Your Own Beehive

Build a Beehive in Rust: 300 wood plus 1 sheet metal at a Workbench 1 makes a Beehive, then add 1 Beehive Nucleus; the blueprint costs 15 scrap or 60 scrap on the Workbench 1 tech tree; nucleus grades go from 3 to 1; keep bees warm and dry, outside near grass
A Beehive turns one nucleus into honeycomb all wipe.

For steady honey you want a Beehive at your base. It costs 300 wood and 1 sheet metal at a Workbench 1. The blueprint is 15 scrap at a research table, or 60 scrap on the Workbench 1 branch of the tech tree.

  1. Place it outside. Bees need open ground with grass, sand or snow nearby, and the hive needs to sit under your Tool Cupboard or it decays.
  2. Put a nucleus in. No nucleus, no bees, no honeycomb.
  3. Keep the bees happy. Happy bees make honeycomb faster. Rain and snow hurt humidity, and cold nights hurt temperature, so a roof edge and an Electric Heater go a long way.
  4. Let the nucleus grow. A fresh nucleus starts at Grade 3 and levels up to Grade 2 and Grade 1 as its bees produce. Higher grades make more honeycomb, so keep one hive running all wipe instead of starting over.
  5. Harvest, then cook. Pull the honeycomb out and run it through a furnace. Leave a comb or two behind and the bees stay calmer when you loot the hive.

Beekeeping is part of Rust’s base farming loop, next to chickens and the newer cows and sheep in our livestock guide.

What to Do With Honey in Rust

Uses of honey in Rust: craft a Honey Bandage from 2 jars and 4 cloth at a Workbench 1, bake an Apple Pie from 2 apples, 3 wheat and 2 jars at a Cooking Workbench, eat it for -15 radiation and +50 calories, sell it at the Bandit Camp for scrap, use it as fishing bait
Five ways to spend a jar.
UseWhat it takesWorth it?
Medical Honey Bandage2 jars + 4 cloth at a Workbench 1Best use. +8 HP instantly, +6 over time, stops bleeding, clears 4 poison and 5 radiation
Apple Pie2 jars + 2 apples + 3 wheat at a Cooking WorkbenchGood if you already farm wheat
Eat itNothing-15 radiation, +50 calories, +3 HP. Handy at monuments
Sell itA trip to the Bandit CampLow scrap per jar, but free if your hives overflow
Fishing baitA rod and a jarWorks, but it is only basic bait

The Bandit Camp Produce Exchange buys honey for scrap, the same way it buys farm produce. The rate is low (sources put it at around 1 scrap per jar, and vendor prices can vary), so selling only makes sense for honey you will never use. Two jars spent on a Honey Bandage are worth a lot more than two scrap.

Honey vs Other Radiation Fixes

Rust radiation fixes compared: Jar of Honey removes 15 radiation and stacks to 20; Honey Bandage removes 5 radiation and heals 14 HP; Anti-Radiation Pills remove 50 radiation, loot only, stack 10; Hazmat Suit removes none but blocks radiation while worn
Honey is the cheapest rad cleanup you can farm.

Honey’s best trick is removing 15 radiation per jar. That makes it a farmable alternative to Anti-Radiation Pills for low and medium radiation monuments. Eat a jar or two on the way out of a rad zone and the poisoning is gone before it costs you health.

It is a cleanup, not protection. In a high radiation area you still want a Hazmat Suit so the radiation never builds up. Our Rust monuments guide lists which places need protection.

How to Make an Apple Pie with Honey

Rust Apple Pie recipe at a Cooking Workbench: 2 apples plus 3 wheat plus 2 jars of honey makes 1 Apple Pie; grow wheat in planters next to your beehives
Two jars of honey go into every Apple Pie.

The Crafting Update that brought bees also brought pies, cooked at the Cooking Workbench. The Apple Pie takes 2 apples, 3 wheat and 2 Jars of Honey. Pies give stronger food and temporary bonuses than eating the ingredients raw, so a base that farms bees and wheat side by side can keep a team fed and buffed.

If you only have a few jars, put them into Honey Bandages first. Pies are for when the hives are full.

Rust Jar of Honey Tips

Rust jar of honey tips: extract honeycomb until you own a nucleus, then cook it in a furnace; carry a few jars for -15 radiation each; save honey for Honey Bandages; keep bees warm with a heater; sell surplus honey at the Bandit Camp
Get more out of every honeycomb.
  • Extract first, cook later. Every extracted comb is a 10% nucleus roll. Cook only once you have the nuclei you need.
  • Always check oak trees. A wild hive is 4 to 7 honeycomb for one swing session, and the bees are only dangerous for a few seconds.
  • Carry a few jars to monuments. At -15 radiation each and 20 to a stack, a handful covers most low rad runs.
  • Feed the bandage supply. Two jars and four cloth make a Honey Bandage, almost three times the healing of a normal bandage.
  • Keep bees comfortable. Shelter from rain and an Electric Heater at night keep honeycomb coming.
  • Sell only the surplus. The Bandit Camp price is low. Honey you will actually use is worth more.
  • Remember the wipe. Hives, nuclei and every jar reset on force wipe day. Check when the next force wipe is before you build a big bee farm late in a wipe.

Rust Jar of Honey FAQ

How do you get a jar of honey in Rust?

Turn honeycomb into honey. Extract a honeycomb in your inventory for a 90% chance of a jar (10% chance of a Beehive Nucleus instead), or cook it in any furnace for a guaranteed jar. Honeycomb comes from wild hives on oak trees or from your own Beehive.

What does honey do in Rust?

Eating a Jar of Honey gives 50 calories, removes 15 radiation and heals 3 HP over time. It is also used to craft the Medical Honey Bandage and the Apple Pie, works as fishing bait, and sells for scrap at the Bandit Camp.

Can you craft a jar of honey in Rust?

No. Honey has no recipe or blueprint. The only source is honeycomb, which you extract or cook into honey one comb at a time.
