The Green Keycard is the cheapest item in Rust that actually changes your wipe. It costs 15 scrap, roughly two minutes of recycling, and it is the only thing standing between a fresh spawn and the Blue Keycard that unlocks the rest of the game. Every red card anyone on your server is holding started life as a green one.
Most players still get this wrong in the same two ways. They farm green cards off scientists for an hour when a vendor sells them on demand, or they buy one, walk to a monument, and discover they forgot the fuse. This guide covers where to get a green card, all five puzzles that pay you a blue card for using one, the monuments where green is only step one, and the swipe rules that quietly waste cards.

What Is the Green Keycard in Rust?
The Green Keycard is the entry tier of Rust’s three card system. The game describes it as a low level clearance card granting access to basic areas, which undersells it badly. Green is the tier that opens the doors where blue cards spawn, and blue cards are what open the doors where red cards spawn.
It is a Cobalt branded plastic card that takes a full inventory slot, since it does not stack. You cannot craft it, research it, recycle it or repair it. There is no blueprint and no workbench recipe. Every green card in the game was either bought from a vendor, pulled off a desk, or looted from a corpse.
Mechanically it does one thing. You hold E on a card reader next to a green door, the reader eats a swipe, and the door opens for a few seconds. The card itself is simple. What catches people out is everything the door needs before it will accept the swipe, which is almost always a fuse and a flipped switch.
How to Get a Green Keycard
Three routes, and one of them is dramatically better than the other two.
Buy one at Bandit Camp
The Scrap 4 Sale vendor at Bandit Camp sells Green Keycards for 15 scrap each, and the stock restocks in seconds. This is the correct answer almost every time. Fifteen scrap is a handful of components through a recycler, Bandit Camp is a safe zone so nobody can shoot you at the vending machine, and you can buy several at once.
If you take one thing from this guide, take this: stop farming green cards. The time you spend detouring to a gas station is worth more than 15 scrap.
Loot one from a monument desk
Green cards spawn on desks and tables at the small, safe, low tier monuments. No fuse, no puzzle, no radiation. Just walk in and grab it.
| Location | Where Exactly | Worth the Trip? |
|---|---|---|
| Oxum’s Gas Station | Back office desk | Yes, they are everywhere |
| Abandoned Supermarket | Back office | Yes, also everywhere |
| Junkyard | Bridge office | Yes, plus recyclers on site |
| Lighthouse | Upper floors | Only if it is close |
| Abandoned Cabins | Upstairs | Only if it is close |
| Underwater Labs | Two guaranteed per lab | Yes, if you are already diving |
Looted cards respawn roughly every 30 minutes, so a gas station you cleared early is worth checking again on the way home. On a busy server the desks are usually stripped, which is exactly why the vendor exists.
Kill something that is carrying one
Scientists drop green cards at a decent clip. Military Tunnel scientists carry one around 36% of the time, roaming and road scientists around 24%, and Bandit Camp guards and Peacekeepers roughly 17%. If you are already fighting scientists for other reasons, check the bodies. Going out of your way to farm them for cards is not worth it.
Where to Use a Green Keycard
This is the part that matters. There are five monuments where a green card and a single fuse are the entire puzzle, and every one of them hands you a Blue Keycard for your trouble.
| Monument | Cards Needed | Fuses | Rad Protection | Behind the Green Door |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sewer Branch Best value | Green | 1 | None | Blue Keycard + 3 crates |
| Satellite Dish | Green | 1 | None | Blue Keycard + 2 crates |
| Radtown Rad gear | Green | 1 | Hazmat | Blue Keycard + blueprint fragment + 2 military crates |
| Harbor (2-storey building) | Green | 1 | None | Blue Keycard + 1 crate |
| Harbor (hangar) | Green | 1 | None | Blue Keycard + 1 crate |
Sewer Branch is the best single run in the game for a new player. One green card, one fuse, no radiation, and you leave with a blue card and three or more crates. If you only have time for one puzzle before the server fills up, this is it.
Radtown is the richest but the most demanding. It pays a blue card, a blueprint fragment and two military crates, but the monument is genuinely radioactive and you want a hazmat suit or a properly stacked armour set. It is also the newest of the five, so plenty of older guides do not list it at all.
Green Card Puzzle Walkthroughs
Sewer Branch
No radiation, no green card door on the surface, and the best crate count of the five. The whole thing happens underground.
- Break open the door on the small red building at the surface.
- Place your fuse in the box inside and flip the switch.
- Head down into the tunnel and take the left turn.
- Swipe your green card on the reader.
- Follow the tunnel through and clear the room. Blue Keycard plus three or more crates.
Satellite Dish
Wide open and easy to get sniped at, but the puzzle itself is short. Two crates and the blue card.
- Find the small metal structure and insert your fuse.
- Go to the building at the back and flick the switch inside.
- Move to the adjacent building and swipe your green card on the green door.
Radtown
Bring rad protection for this one. The reward is the best of the five, and there is a recycler on site so you can process the loot before you walk home.
- Find the garage building and locate the fuse box on its left side.
- Insert the fuse and hit the switch.
- Climb the stairs into the upper room.
- The keycard door is on your right. Swipe your green card.
- Take the two crates, then grab the Blue Keycard and blueprint fragment off the table.
Harbor, 2-storey building
- Start at the two storey building on the dock.
- Insert your fuse and flip the switch.
- The green door is on the second floor. Swipe and take the blue card and the crate.
Harbor, hangar
- Flip the switch on the outside of the building first.
- Go inside and place your fuse.
- Enter the hangar. The green door is at the back right.
Where a Green Keycard Is Only Step One
Plenty of other monuments have a green card door, but they will not hand you a card back. At these places green is simply the first reader in a longer sequence, and you need the rest of the set in your inventory before you set off.
| Monument | Cards Needed | Fuses | What You Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power Plant | Green + Blue | 1 | Red Keycard + 4 crates |
| Airfield | Green + Blue | 2 | Red Keycard + 7 crates |
| Military Tunnels | Green + Blue + Red | 1 | 3 elite crates |
| Launch Site | Green + Red | 2 | 2 elite crates |
| Large Oil Rig | Green + Blue + Red | 1 | 3 elite + 4 weapon crates |
| Missile Silo | Green + Blue + Red | 1 | Elite crates, recycler on site |
| Ferry Terminal | Green + Blue | 1 | Crates, no card |
Note that Power Plant and Airfield are the two that pay a Red Keycard, and both want a green and a blue card in the same trip. If you have just run Sewer Branch and you are holding a fresh blue card, buying a second green for 15 scrap and heading straight to Power Plant is one of the strongest mid wipe plays available.
Train Yard and Water Treatment Plant are the exceptions worth remembering: both pay a Red Keycard and neither needs a green card at all. Just a blue card and a fuse.
The Keycard Chain: Green to Blue to Red
You cannot skip a rung. The system is deliberately a ladder.
Green is bought for 15 scrap or looted from a desk. Blue comes from spending a green card at one of the five puzzles above, or from buying one at Outpost for 100 scrap if you would rather pay than walk. Red comes from spending a blue card at Water Treatment, Train Yard, Power Plant, Airfield or Arctic Research Base. No vendor sells red at all.
Priced end to end, the cheapest path to a red card is about 15 scrap and two fuses: buy a green, run Sewer Branch for the blue, then run Water Treatment or Train Yard for the red. That is genuinely it. The barrier to Rust’s best loot rooms is not scrap, it is remembering to bring fuses.
Swipes, Stacks and the 20 Minute Timer
Keycards are not single use. A green card survives four swipes before it breaks, the same as blue. Red only gets two. Plenty of players hoard a green card they could have spent three more times, which is backwards: green is the cheapest card in the game and the one you should be burning freely.
The despawn timer is short. A dropped green card disappears after about 20 minutes, compared to a full hour for a red card. If you die on approach and plan to run back for your bag, the card is often the first thing gone.
It does not stack. One card per inventory slot. If you are running all five puzzles in a trip and want spares, that is real inventory space, so plan around it.
One last quirk worth knowing: a partially used card looks identical to a fresh one. There is no visible swipe counter anywhere in the interface. If you are running with a team, agree on who carries the card, because the moment it changes hands nobody knows how many swipes are left.
The Green Card Run Kit
The green keycard. Obviously. Buy two if you are running more than four doors.
An electric fuse. Every one of the five puzzles needs one, and fuses burn out. Carry a spare. Arriving at a fuse box with an empty inventory slot where the fuse should be is the single most common wasted trip in Rust.
Radiation protection, but only for Radtown. Sewer Branch, Satellite Dish and both Harbors are clean. Radtown is not, and it will chew through you without a hazmat suit or a decent armour set.
A gun you can win a fight with. These are low tier monuments, not empty ones. Sewer Branch and Harbor are contested constantly in the first days of a wipe because everybody needs the same blue card you do. Check the weapons tier list if you are unsure what is worth carrying this early.
Thirty spare scrap. Enough to rebuy two green cards at Bandit Camp if the run goes sideways, instead of restarting the whole chain.
Green Keycard Myths and Common Mistakes
Myth: green keycards are hard to get. They are the easiest item in the game to obtain. A vendor sells them on demand for 15 scrap in a safe zone. If you are struggling for green cards, you are farming instead of shopping.
Myth: a green card is single use. It gets four swipes. Use them.
Myth: you can craft or research one. You cannot. There is no recipe, no blueprint, no tech tree entry, and it cannot even be recycled for parts. Cards only come from vendors, desks and corpses.
Myth: the green door at Power Plant gives you another green card. It does not. Power Plant and Airfield want green plus blue and pay out a red card. The only doors that pay a card for a green swipe are the five in the table above.
Mistake: swiping before powering the door. The reader does not care whether the door can open. It takes the swipe either way.
Mistake: leaving the card on the ground. Twenty minutes is not long. If you die and cannot get back quickly, buy another one rather than making the trip.
Mistake: running the puzzles at peak hours on day one. Every single player on the server needs a blue card in the first 48 hours, and they are all at Sewer Branch and Harbor. Off peak runs get the same loot with a fraction of the fighting.
Planning your first puzzle run? Keycards are items, not blueprints, so the whole chain resets when the map does. Check the live force wipe countdown before you spend scrap on cards and fuses.
Force Wipe CountdownPro Tips for Green Card Runs
- Buy three cards, not one. Forty five scrap covers twelve swipes. That is every green puzzle on the map plus the green doors at Power Plant and Airfield, with spares.
- Chain the run. Sewer Branch, then Satellite Dish, then Harbor. You leave with three blue cards, which is three red card runs waiting to happen.
- Recycle at Bandit Camp while you shop. There are two recyclers on site, so you can turn components into the scrap that buys the card in the same trip.
- Do the puzzle, then decide on the surface loot. The blue card is the prize and it is what everyone else is racing you for. Clear the green room first, sightsee second.
- Carry the fuse in the same slot every time. Sounds trivial. It is the difference between noticing it is missing at base and noticing it at the fuse box.
- Sell the spares, do not bin them. Blue cards you are not going to use are worth real trade value early in a wipe, when half the server still has not run a puzzle.
- Green cards are the cheapest way to check a monument is unlooted. If the green door is already open, someone beat you there and the blue card is gone. Move on rather than burning the fuse.

Final Thoughts
The Green Keycard is the cheapest thing in Rust that is worth planning a trip around. Fifteen scrap and one fuse gets you a Blue Keycard and a pile of crates, and four swipes means a single card can do that four times over. The players who struggle with monument progression are almost never short on scrap. They are short on fuses, or they burned a swipe on a door that had no power, or they spent an hour farming a card a vendor was selling the whole time.
Buy the green. Bring two fuses. Run Sewer Branch first. Everything else in the puzzle chain opens up from there.
