Rust has one of the most brutal weapon progressions in any survival game. You start the wipe throwing rocks and end it beaming people with an assault rifle, and everything in between is a fight for a better gun. This guide covers every weapon in Rust worth knowing: all the guns by category, the melee and bow tiers you’ll actually live on early, a straight up tier list, and the fastest ways to get guns in your hands.
No fluff, no padding, just the full arsenal explained by what each weapon is actually for.

How Weapons Work in Rust
Three things decide what you can shoot in this game:
- Workbench tiers. Weapons unlock across Workbench Levels 1 through 3. WB1 gets you pipes, bows and a revolver. WB2 opens real guns like the SAR and Thompson. WB3 is AK country.
- Craftable vs loot only. Plenty of the best guns can’t be crafted at all. The M249, L96, M92 and Minigun only come from high tier loot like elite crates, locked crates, attack helicopters and Bradley. If you’re holding one, you earned it or you took it off someone who did.
- Ammo. Guns are only as good as your ammo economy. Handmade shells are cheap and terrible, pistol ammo carries the mid game, and 5.56 rifle ammo is the currency of the endgame. Stockpile accordingly.
Melee Weapons
Everyone starts here and nobody misses it. Still, melee matters more than new players think, because a good spear rush ends plenty of early fights.
| Weapon | Best For |
|---|---|
| Day one fights. Cheap, long reach, throwable. The beach classic. | |
| Raw melee damage on a budget. Scary in tight hallways. | |
| The best all-round melee. Fast swings, high damage, cheap to make. | |
| Silent finisher and the fastest harvesting of downed players. |
Bows and the Early Game
The primitive tier is where wipes are decided. A confident bow player beats a nervous gun player more often than anyone wants to admit.
| Weapon | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Your first real weapon. Headshots hit hard, arrows are nearly free. | |
| Harder hitting bow with a slower reload. Great with a makeshift scope playstyle from windows. | |
| Charged shots that delete people. Rewards patient aim. | |
| A flint gamble that fires handmade shells. Pure chaos, occasionally a legend maker. | |
| Craftable with no gunpowder at all. Quietly one of the best day one weapons in the game. |
Pistols
| Pistol | How You Get It | The Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Craft at WB1 | Your first real gun most wipes. Cheap, decent, honest. | |
| Craft at WB1 | Faster follow-up shots and a big magazine for the tier. Workhorse. | |
| Craft at WB2 | Hits like a rifle up close. Three headshots and the fight’s over. | |
| Military loot | The best pistol in the game. Fast, accurate, full auto energy in a sidearm. | |
| Loot and events | Burst-fire oddball. Fun, situational, spicy in the right hands. |
SMGs
| SMG | How You Get It | The Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Craft at WB2 | The budget bullet hose. Perfect for door camping and close roams. | |
| Craft at WB2 | Slower firing but forgiving. The people’s mid game gun. | |
| Loot and research | The best close quarters gun in Rust. In a compound fight, an MP5 player is a problem. |
Rifles
| Rifle | How You Get It | The Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Craft at WB2 | Mid game backbone. Cheap, accurate, and it farms fights at range. | |
| Craft at WB3 | The king. Highest skill ceiling, highest reward. Master the spray and the wipe is yours. | |
| Loot and research | Laser beam recoil compared to the AK. Trades punch for consistency. | |
| Military loot | A SAR that went to the gym. Semi-auto DMR that melts at mid range. | |
| Craft at WB3 | The craftable sniper. One headshot changes a fight from 200 meters. | |
| Elite military loot | The true sniper. Flatter, faster, deadlier than the Bolty. Rare for a reason. |
Shotguns
| Shotgun | How You Get It | The Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Craft at WB1 | One shell, one prayer. Deletes anyone dumb enough to hug a doorway. | |
| Craft at WB1 | Two shells of pure disrespect. The early game equalizer. | |
| Craft at WB2 | The serious shotgun. With handmade shells it’s cheap, with buckshot it’s cruel. | |
| Military loot | Semi-auto shotgun for people who want the fight over immediately. |
LMGs, Explosives and the Scary Stuff
| Weapon | How You Get It | The Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Craft at WB3 | Homemade machine gun. A hundred rounds of suppression you can actually build. | |
| Heli and Bradley crates | The rarest standard gun in Rust and it feels like it. A walking counter-raid. | |
| Top tier loot and events | You don’t roam with a minigun. You defend with it and laugh. | |
| Craft at WB3 | Technically a weapon, practically a door key. The raiding standard. | |
| Military loot | Six rounds of area denial. Rare, hilarious, terrifying. | |
| Craft at WB1 | Cheap pressure for compound fights and clearing campers off doors. |
Rust Weapon Tier List (2026)
Ranked for overall value across a whole wipe, factoring in cost, availability and how hard the weapon carries when it matters. Loot-only guns rank on power, craftables get credit for being reliable.
| Tier | Weapons | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| S | AK, M249, MP5, L96, M39 | Fight winners. If it’s in your hands, you’re the problem. |
| A | Bolty, LR-300, Thompson, SAR, Pump Shotgun, M92 | Reliable killers you can actually sustain all wipe. |
| B | Custom SMG, Python, Double Barrel, Compound Bow, HMLMG | Great at their job, outclassed when real kits show up. |
| C | Revolver, Waterpipe, Nailgun, Eoka, Crossbow | Early game tools. Respectable on day one, donations by day three. |
How to Get Guns Fast in Rust
Four real paths, best used together:
- Craft your way up. Rush a Workbench Level 1 for a revolver or double barrel, then push WB2 as fast as possible. The SAR and Thompson at WB2 are the biggest power spike in the game for the scrap.
- Loot the roads and monuments. Crates along roads and at monuments drop guns and the components to craft them. Military crates and elite crates at bigger monuments carry the good stuff, if you can survive the trip.
- Do events. Attack helicopter, Bradley, locked crates, oil rig. High risk, but this is where the uncraftable weapons like the M249 and L96 come from.
- Take them. The oldest gun acquisition method in Rust. Every player you see is carrying your future loadout. A well-placed compound bow arrow turns their AK into your AK.
Fresh wipe, fresh chances at the good guns. Check the live countdown and be there when the servers reset.

Final Thoughts
Rust’s arsenal looks huge, but the game is really about a handful of guns and the climb between them. Get off the beach with a bow, punch into mid game with a SAR or Thompson, and put your hours into the AK because that’s the weapon the endgame is priced in.
And whatever you carry, carry spares. In Rust the best weapon isn’t the one on your back, it’s the three more in your base waiting for the next fight.
