What Is Low Grade Fuel in Rust?

Low Grade Fuel is a mid tier fuel resource. The game describes it plainly as fuel “used to power light sources,” but that undersells it badly. In practice it is the fuel that runs everything on the player side of Rust that is not an electrical grid or a furnace: vehicles, powered tools, lights and flame weapons all draw from your low grade stockpile.

It sits one step up the fuel chain from raw Crude Oil. Crude on its own does almost nothing. You refine crude into low grade, and low grade is the finished product you actually spend. That is the single most important thing to understand about it: crude is the ingredient, low grade is the fuel, and a Small Oil Refinery is the machine that turns one into the other.

Unlike Diesel Fuel, which is loot only and powers heavy industrial machines like the Giant Excavator and quarries, Low Grade Fuel is fully craftable and powers your personal gear. Do not mix the two up. If a machine is a huge monument mining rig it wants diesel; if it is your minicopter, chainsaw or lantern, it wants low grade.

The two you will lean on most are crafting from animal fat and refining crude. Barrels are a constant background trickle you should never walk past, the Outpost machine is your emergency top up, and airdrops are a lucky bonus rather than a plan. How to Make Low Grade Fuel in Rust

Crafting Low Grade Fuel is one of the first recipes you can use, because it needs no workbench at all. The recipe is simple and never changes: 3 Animal Fat plus 1 Cloth makes 4 Low Grade Fuel.

  1. Gather Animal Fat. Kill animals and harvest them. Bears and boars are the best early sources. You need three fat for every batch.
  2. Gather Cloth. Pick hemp plants or recycle cloth items. You only need one cloth per batch, so this is never the bottleneck.
  3. Open your crafting menu. Low Grade Fuel is known by default, so no blueprint or workbench is required. Queue up as many batches as your fat allows.
  4. Craft. Each batch takes about 5 seconds by hand, dropping to roughly 1 second next to a workbench. Every 3 fat and 1 cloth returns 4 low grade.

Animal Fat: The Real Bottleneck

Cloth is trivial to get, so the entire cost of crafted low grade comes down to Animal Fat. Fat is harvested from animals when you kill and cut them up, and the amount depends heavily on the animal. A bear gives ten times what a deer does.

The math is friendly. Because 3 fat and 1 cloth make 4 low grade, every unit of fat is worth about 1.33 low grade. A single bear at 100 fat therefore turns into roughly 133 Low Grade Fuel, which is nearly a full minicopter tank from one kill. That is why the classic early game fuel run is a hunting bow and a loop through the forest hitting every bear and boar you can find.

Fat also feeds candles, so plan ahead Animal Fat is not only for fuel. Small and Large Candle Sets also eat fat, 10 and 20 respectively, and it is a food ingredient too. If you are decorating a base or cooking, budget your fat, because the same stack that lights your base could have been a tank of minicopter fuel.

Refining Crude Oil into Low Grade Fuel

Once you are past the early game, refining beats crafting for raw volume. A Small Oil Refinery turns 1 Crude Oil into 3 Low Grade Fuel, and crude is far easier to get in bulk than animal fat once you have access to barrels and pump jacks.

To refine, place a Small Oil Refinery on open ground, drop Wood into it as fuel to run the burner, then load Crude Oil into the input slots. As it runs, it outputs three Low Grade Fuel for every crude, and hands you Charcoal as a by-product, which is a nice bonus for gunpowder. A single refinery has three input slots, so splitting your crude across all three refines roughly three times faster.

Where does the crude come from? Red oil barrels on roads and beaches, the pump jack at Power Plant, Water Treatment and Train Yard, the Oil Rig, and the Giant Excavator when set to crude. A monument pump jack alone produces around 60 crude and 170 low grade per diesel, and once that crude is refined the effective yield climbs to roughly 350 low grade per diesel.   • Vehicles. The minicopter, scrap transport helicopter, boats, submarines and modular cars all run on low grade. A minicopter tank holds 500 and burns 30 a minute.
  • Power tools. The Chainsaw and the Jackhammer both burn low grade while you use them, trading fuel for a huge boost to wood and ore gathering.
  • Light sources. Lanterns, tuna can lamps, ceiling lights, jack o lanterns and most decorative lights need low grade to stay lit.
  • Flame weapons. The Flame Turret and the Flamethrower are fuelled directly by low grade, turning it into area denial and roof clearing.

Both crafting and refining are cheap, so this is not about saving resources, it is about matching the method to your situation.

Refine crude oil once you have a base and a Small Oil Refinery. The 1 to 3 ratio scales enormously, crude pours out of barrels and pump jacks with far less effort than hunting, and you get free charcoal on the side. For any established player, refining is the main low grade engine and crafting becomes the backup.

Do not burn low grade for charcoal A surprisingly common mistake is trying to burn Low Grade Fuel to make charcoal, the way you burn wood. It does not work like that. Charcoal comes from burning Wood in a furnace or campfire, and from the refinery as a by-product of making low grade. Low grade is the finished fuel at the top of the chain, so spend it on vehicles and tools. Feeding it into a furnace just wastes it.

A few habits keep your fuel supply healthy so you are never grounded at the worst moment:

  • Never walk past a red oil barrel. They are free crude and low grade scattered along every road and shoreline. Over a wipe they add up to more fuel than any single farm session.
  • Keep a refinery running while you do other things. Load crude and wood before you log off or go raiding, and come back to a stack of low grade for zero active effort.
  • Bank fat, do not dump it. Raw animal fat stacks to 1,000 and keeps. Hold it and craft low grade on demand rather than crafting everything the moment you loot it.
  • Count your raid fuel. If you are making C4, remember each one hides 60 low grade. A ten C4 raid is 600 low grade you need on top of the sulfur.
  • Use Outpost as a safety net. If you are grounded and out of fat, a quick trip to the safe zone vending machines buys enough low grade for a flight home.
  • Do not confuse it with diesel. Low grade runs your gear. Diesel runs monuments. Loading the wrong one just wastes a trip.
