Targeting Computer Rust: Where to Find, Uses & Recycle

Rust component guide, 2026

Every auto turret and every computer station in Rust starts with one small green circuit board. The targeting computer in Rust is a loot-only component, you can’t craft it at any workbench, and if you hit the recycle button without looking you’ll turn a future turret into a handful of tech trash.

This targeting computer Rust guide covers where it drops and how often, the two recipes that use it, what it recycles into, and whether you should keep it, trade it or break it down.

TL;DR The targeting computer is a very rare component you only get from loot. The best sources are the Oil Rig and hackable locked crates (about 55%) and Bradley APC crates (about 50%). It builds exactly two things: the auto turret and the computer station. Recycled, it gives 3 tech trash, 1 HQM and 60 metal fragments. Keep it unless you have spares.

What Is the Targeting Computer in Rust?

The targeting computer is a crafting component. The in-game description calls it a computer loaded with software that can analyse a video feed and work out how to turn toward the objects in it. That’s exactly what an auto turret does, which is why the turret needs one.

It sits in the same family as the CCTV camera, the tech trash and the other electrical parts you pull out of military and elite crates. Unlike most components, though, there’s no blueprint for it. The game files do hold a recipe of 5 tech trash, 2 HQM and 100 metal fragments, but it’s switched off for players. That hidden recipe is only what the recycler uses to work out what you get back.

Heads up Some item sites list that hidden recipe as if you can craft it at a Workbench Level 3. You can’t. There’s nothing to research and nothing to learn in the tech tree. Every targeting computer on the server came out of a crate.

Where to Find a Targeting Computer in Rust

You’ll find targeting computers in the high-tier loot pool. The chance is per crate, so a monument with several good crates gives you several rolls.

Best Farming Route for Targeting Computers

Targeting computer Rust farming route: Oil Rig, Bradley, patrol heli, elite crates
Four ways to farm targeting computers, best first.
  1. Small Oil Rig. Clear the scientists, hack the locked crate and hold it for the timer. It’s roughly a coin flip for a targeting computer, and the crate also carries plenty of tech trash.
  2. Bradley at Launch Site. The APC drops three crates when it dies, and each one has about a 50% roll. Two targeting computers from one Bradley is common.
  3. Patrol helicopter. Down the heli, wait for the crates to stop burning, then loot fast before other groups arrive.
  4. Elite crate loop. If you can’t fight big PvE yet, run Launch Site, Military Tunnels and Airfield for elite crates. The chance is lower but the loop is quick.
Solo tip Solos get the most from Small Oil Rig on a quiet server. If the rig is contested, the elite crate loop is safer and still turns up a targeting computer every few runs.

What the Targeting Computer Builds

There are only two recipes, and both need a Workbench Level 2.

1. Auto Turret

Auto turret recipe.

The auto turret costs 1 targeting computer, 1 CCTV camera and 25 high quality metal (up from 10 since the August 2026 Power Trip update). It needs power to run and a gun loaded into it. This is the main reason people hunt targeting computers, since turrets are the best base defence you can build.

2. Computer Station

Computer station recipe in Rust: 1 targeting computer, 1 RF broadcaster, 1 RF receiver and 5 HQM
Computer station recipe.

The computer station costs 1 targeting computer, 1 RF broadcaster, 1 RF receiver and 5 HQM. It lets you watch monument CCTV feeds, check your own base cameras and fly drones. A finished station can also be bought at Outpost, so many players save their targeting computers for turrets and buy the station instead.

What Does a Targeting Computer Recycle Into?

Monument recycler31 (20% chance of 2)60
Safe zone recycler20 to 140

Safe zone recyclers at Outpost and Bandit Camp return less than the ones at monuments, so if you do recycle, take it to a monument.

Should You Keep or Recycle a Targeting Computer?

Keep, trade or recycle a targeting computer in Rust
When to keep, trade or recycle.

Keep it almost every time. Three tech trash is about 60 scrap once you recycle it all the way down, while a finished auto turret costs several hundred scrap to buy. The targeting computer is also the only part of the turret recipe you can’t make yourself.

Trade it when you have more than you’ll build. Groups building turret walls always want them. Recycle it only late in the wipe, when your base is finished and you just need a few tech trash for a craft like C4.

Targeting Computer Tips

Targeting computer Rust pro tips
Six quick tips.
  • Check before you recycle. Pull targeting computers out of a recycle run before you press start.
  • Stack them in one slot. They stack to 64, so a single box slot holds your whole stash.
  • Turret first. Early in a wipe, one turret by your door does more than a computer station.
  • Buy the station. Outpost sells a finished computer station, which frees your targeting computer for a turret.
  • Spread your spares. Raiders go looking for turret parts. Don’t keep them all in the box next to your TC.
  • Time your runs to the wipe. Oil Rig and Bradley are least contested right after a force wipe while big groups are still building.

Planning your first turret run? Check when the next force wipe lands so you hit Oil Rig before everyone else.

Targeting Computer Rust FAQ

Can you craft a targeting computer in Rust?

No. The targeting computer has no blueprint and can’t be researched or learned. You can only get it from loot such as locked crates, Bradley and heli crates, elite crates and airdrops.

Where is the best place to find a targeting computer in Rust?

Oil Rig and hackable locked crates are best at about 55% per crate, followed by Bradley APC crates at about 50%. Elite crates are around 15% and military crates around 9%.

What is the targeting computer used for in Rust?

It builds two items. The auto turret needs 1 targeting computer, 1 CCTV camera and 25 HQM. The computer station needs 1 targeting computer, 1 RF broadcaster, 1 RF receiver and 5 HQM. Both are crafted at a Workbench Level 2.

What does a targeting computer recycle into?

A monument recycler returns 3 tech trash, 1 high quality metal with a 20% chance of a second, and 60 metal fragments. Safe zone recyclers return less.

Should I recycle my targeting computer?

What is the stack size of the targeting computer?

Targeting computers stack to 64 in one inventory slot.

What is the targeting computer shortname in Rust?

The shortname is targeting.computer and the item ID is 1523195708. Server admins use these for give commands and loot plugins.
