The Recycler is the single most profitable machine in Rust, and most players are quietly losing a third of their scrap to it every wipe. Not because they use it wrong, but because they use the wrong one.
Since May 2024 there are two recyclers in the game. The one at Train Yard, Airfield and Launch Site hands back 60% of an item’s value in 5 seconds. The one at Outpost and Bandit Camp hands back 40% in 8 seconds. Same stack of gears, same button, one third less scrap. Nobody in game tells you this.
This guide covers exactly what every component returns in both machines, where all 29 recyclers on a standard map actually sit, which monuments have none at all, and the handful of items that are worth carrying across the map versus the ones you should leave in the crate.

What Is the Recycler in Rust?
The Recycler is a fixed machine that breaks items down into the materials they were built from. Feed it a rifle body and you get scrap and high quality metal back. Feed it a road sign and you get scrap and HQM. Feed it a whole assault rifle and you get 30 HQM, 120 wood and a fistful of springs.
It is the bridge between looting and building. Barrels and crates in Rust drop components, and components are useless on their own. You cannot build a wall out of gears or shoot someone with a metal pipe. The recycler is what turns that pile of junk into scrap for the tech tree and metal for your base.
You cannot craft a recycler. There is no blueprint, no workbench recipe, and no way to pick one up and carry it back to base. Every recycler in the game is placed by the map generator at a monument, which means recycling is always a trip out of your base and usually a trip into somewhere contested.
That constraint is deliberate. Facepunch wants the machine that makes your loot valuable to sit in the places where you can be killed for it.
How the Recycler Works
The interface is simple and the mechanics behind it are not obvious, so here is the whole thing.
- Open it and load the input grid. A recycler takes six stacks at once, so a full inventory of gears goes in one load.
- Hit the power button. No fuel, no electricity, no low grade. Recyclers run for free.
- It processes one cycle at a time. Every cycle it consumes a portion of the input and drops the output into the six slots on the right.
- Take the output. It does not go to your inventory automatically. If you walk away, it stays in the machine.
The rule underneath all of it is that a recycler returns a percentage of the item’s crafting cost. An assault rifle costs 200 wood, 50 HQM, 4 metal springs and 1 rifle body to craft, and a monument recycler gives back 120 wood, 50 HQM becomes 30, and so on. Sixty percent, rounded with a chance roll on the remainder.
Components like gears and tech trash are not craftable, so their outputs are set by hand instead, but the same 60/40 split applies to them.
Recycler Efficiency: 60% at Monuments, 40% in Safe Zones
This is the section that will actually change how you play, so it comes before the charts.
On 2 May 2024, the Meta Madness update changed both recyclers in opposite directions. Facepunch’s own patch notes put it plainly: safe zone recycler cycle time went up to 8 seconds and they now yield 80% of what they used to, while monument recyclers kept their cycle time and now yield 120%.
The end state is the two machines you use today.
| Recycler Type | Yield | Cycle Time | Where | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monument Recycler Use this | 60% of item value | 5 seconds | 20 contested monuments | You can be shot |
| Safe Zone Recycler Safe | 40% of item value | 8 seconds | Outpost and Bandit Camp only | None |
Put a number on it. One hundred gears through a monument recycler is 1,200 scrap and 1,500 metal fragments. The same hundred gears at Outpost is 800 scrap and 1,000 fragments. You paid 400 scrap for the privilege of not being shot at, and you spent 60% longer standing there to do it.
Over a wipe, a group that always recycles at Bandit Camp instead of at Mining Outpost or the gas station down the road is giving away thousands of scrap. That is several rockets a wipe left on the table.
Rust Recycle Chart: What Every Component Gives
Here is the full recycle chart, pulled from the Facepunch Rust Wiki item pages rather than from other guides. Numbers in brackets are chance rolls: “1 (80%)” means you get that extra unit eight times out of ten.
| Component | Monument Recycler (60%) | Safe Zone Recycler (40%) |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle Body Best | 30 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (80%) | 20 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) |
| Tech Trash | 24 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 16 Scrap, 1 HQM (80%) |
| Electric Fuse | 24 Scrap | 16 Scrap |
| SMG Body | 18 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (80%) | 12 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) |
| Semi Automatic Body | 18 Scrap, 90 Metal Frags, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (80%) | 12 Scrap, 60 Metal Frags, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) |
| Gears | 12 Scrap, 15 Metal Frags | 8 Scrap, 10 Metal Frags |
| Metal Spring | 12 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 8 Scrap, 1 HQM (80%) |
| Sheet Metal | 120 Metal Frags, 9 Scrap, 1 Scrap (60%), 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 80 Metal Frags, 6 Scrap, 1 Scrap (40%), 1 HQM (80%) |
| Metal Pipe | 6 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 4 Scrap, 1 HQM (80%) |
| Road Signs | 6 Scrap, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 4 Scrap, 1 HQM (80%) |
| Metal Blade | 18 Metal Frags, 2 Scrap, 1 Scrap (40%) | 12 Metal Frags, 1 Scrap, 1 Scrap (60%) |
| Empty Propane Tank | 60 Metal Frags, 1 Scrap, 1 Scrap (20%) | 40 Metal Frags, 1 Scrap (80%) |
| Targeting Computer | 60 Metal Frags, 3 Tech Trash, 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%) | 40 Metal Frags, 2 Tech Trash, 1 HQM (80%) |
| CCTV Camera | 1 HQM, 1 HQM (80%), 1 Tech Trash, 1 Tech Trash (80%) | 1 HQM, 1 HQM (20%), 1 Tech Trash, 1 Tech Trash (20%) |
| Tarp | 60 Cloth | 40 Cloth |
| Rope | 18 Cloth | 12 Cloth |
| Sewing Kit | 12 Cloth, 1 Rope, 1 Rope (80%) | 8 Cloth, 1 Rope, 1 Rope (20%) |
| Sticks | 12 Wood | 8 Wood |
A few of those deserve pointing at.
Sheet Metal is a fragment mine. 120 metal fragments plus HQM plus scrap from one item is the best fragment return in the chart, and sheet metal drops constantly from barrels. If you are short on fragments for a sheet metal door or a wall upgrade, do not smelt more ore, recycle sheet metal.
The Targeting Computer is a component that makes components. Three tech trash come out of it, and each of those is worth another 24 scrap and a shot at HQM. Recycle the output, then recycle the output of the output.
Tarp is worth more as tarp. Sixty cloth is a lot, but tarp has no recipe and no vendor, and you need five of them for a Hazmat Suit. Never recycle tarp before you own that blueprint.
Best Items to Recycle for Scrap
If you only have a few inventory slots and a long walk home, this is the order that matters.
| Rank | Component | Scrap Each | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rifle Body | 30 | Always carry. Nothing beats it per slot. |
| 2 | Tech Trash | 24 | Always carry. Comes with HQM attached. |
| 2 | Electric Fuse | 24 | Carry if you are not running a puzzle. Otherwise keep it. |
| 4 | SMG Body | 18 | Always carry. |
| 4 | Semi Automatic Body | 18 | Always carry. 90 fragments on top. |
| 6 | Gears | 12 | Carry. The bread and butter of every barrel run. |
| 6 | Metal Spring | 12 | Carry, unless you are about to craft a gun. |
| 8 | Sheet Metal | 9 to 10 | Recycle on site for the 120 fragments. |
| 9 | Metal Pipe | 6 | Recycle on site. Not worth a long carry. |
| 9 | Road Signs | 6 | Keep a few for a road sign jacket, recycle the rest. |
| 11 | Metal Blade Leave it | 2 to 3 | 18 fragments. Not worth an inventory slot. |
| 12 | Empty Propane Tank Leave it | 1 to 2 | 60 fragments and nothing else. On site only. |
What Gives High Quality Metal in the Recycler
HQM is the real bottleneck in mid wipe Rust. You need it for C4, for rockets, for armored walls and for every gun worth holding. Mining it is slow. Recycling components for it is not.
Nine components give high quality metal at a monument recycler:
- Targeting Computer gives 1 to 2 HQM directly, plus 3 Tech Trash which are worth another 1 to 2 HQM each when you put them straight back in. Pound for pound the best HQM item in the game.
- CCTV Camera gives 1 to 2 HQM plus 1 to 2 Tech Trash, so the same recursive trick applies.
- Rifle Body, SMG Body and Semi Automatic Body each give 1 HQM guaranteed and a second at 80%.
- Tech Trash, Metal Spring, Metal Pipe, Road Signs and Sheet Metal each give 1 HQM guaranteed and a second at 20%.
Note the pattern in the chance rolls. The three weapon bodies roll their second HQM at 80%, while the cheap components roll it at 20%. Over a hundred road signs you get about 120 HQM. Over a hundred rifle bodies you get about 180.
Should You Recycle Guns and Armor?
Almost always yes, and the numbers are far bigger than most players assume.
| Item | Monument Recycler Output | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifle 30 HQM | 120 Wood, 30 HQM, 2 Metal Springs, 1 more Spring (40%), 1 Rifle Body (60%) | Yes, if you already have one and cannot carry two. |
| Metal Facemask | 30 Leather, 9 HQM, 3 Sewing Kits, 1 more Kit (60%) | Only if it is nearly broken. A working facemask is worth wearing. |
| Hazmat Suit | 4 HQM, 3 Tarp, 1 Sewing Kit, plus chance rolls | Yes, once you own the blueprint. Best tarp rate in the game. |
Thirty high quality metal from a single assault rifle is more HQM than most players mine in an hour. If a raid or a fight leaves you with three AKs and you can only realistically use one, the other two are a stack of HQM sitting in your bag pretending to be guns. Our Rust weapons guide covers which of them are actually worth keeping.
The exception is anything you are about to use. A recycler does not care whether an item is at full condition, so recycling a fresh facemask to get sewing kits back is a real loss of value. Recycle the broken ones and the duplicates.
All Recycler Locations in Rust
Roughly 29 recyclers spawn on a standard procedural map, spread across 22 monuments. Two of those monuments are safe zones and everything else is contested.
| Monument | Recyclers | Where to Find It |
|---|---|---|
| Outpost Safe, 40% | 3 | The dedicated recycling shed inside the compound |
| Bandit Camp Safe, 40% | 2 | Inside the dredge, and in the casino room near the steering wheel |
| Power Plant | 3 | Puzzle building, central building, and a shipping container |
| Airfield | 2 | Hangar 2 behind the crates, and the large building opposite the tarmac |
| Sewer Branch | 2 | Behind the red warehouse, and underground past the blue keycard door |
| Launch Site | 1 | Near the three cylinders on the warehouse side |
| Train Yard | 1 | Small interior room on the top warehouse level |
| Military Tunnels | 1 | The metal shack near Shelter 4 |
| Water Treatment Plant | 1 | Top floor of the warehouse building |
| Giant Excavator | 1 | Main control room beneath the platform |
| Large Harbor | 1 | Courtyard beside the shipping building, inside the chain link fence |
| Small Harbor | 1 | On the concrete pier behind the staircase wall |
| Junkyard | 1 | The covered space on top of the overpass |
| Radtown | 1 | Inside the garage, ground floor, against the back wall |
| Satellite Dish | 1 | Underneath the broken dish remains |
| Arctic Research Base | 1 | Under the large satellite station |
| Ferry Terminal | 1 | In the terminal buildings |
| Lighthouse | 1 | Third floor, along the stone wall |
| Mining Outpost Easy | 1 | Inside the building, between the pallets and the shelf |
| Oxum’s Gas Station Easy | 1 | Inside the garage, to the left of the lift |
| Abandoned Supermarket Easy | 1 | Against the chain link fence on the back wall |
| Underwater Labs | 1 | Near the fuse and puzzle modules in every lab |
The three tagged Easy are the ones worth memorising. Mining Outpost, Oxum’s Gas Station and Abandoned Supermarket have no radiation, no puzzle, no scientists and almost no traffic, and they pay the full 60%. There is very rarely a reason to walk past one of those to reach Outpost.
At the other end, the recyclers at Launch Site, Military Tunnels and Power Plant sit inside radiation zones, so you need a Hazmat Suit to reach them at all. Those are also the red keycard monuments, so if you are already there for the puzzle, recycle before you leave rather than hauling components home.
Monuments With No Recycler
These come up constantly in search, so here they are in one place. On a vanilla server, none of the following have a recycler:
| Monument | Recycler? | What to Do Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Fishing Village | No | It is a safe zone with vendors, not a recycling stop. Nearest is usually a gas station. |
| Large and Small Oil Rig | No | Bring everything back by boat. Nothing on the rig breaks items down. |
| Cargo Ship | No | Loot, leave, recycle on shore. |
| Missile Silo | No | Carry the components out with you. |
| Ranch | No | Horses and vendors only. Recycle at the nearest roadside monument. |
| Large Barn | No | Same as Ranch. Stables and a shopkeeper, no machine. |
| The Dome | No | Climb it, loot it, take the components elsewhere. |
Sitting on a box of components? Every stack of gears, every rifle body and every scrap you have banked disappears the moment the map resets. Check the live force wipe countdown before you stockpile.
Force Wipe CountdownRecycler Myths and Mistakes
Myth: all recyclers are the same. They have not been since May 2024. Monument recyclers give 60% at 5 seconds, safe zone recyclers give 40% at 8 seconds.
Myth: you can craft a recycler for your base. There is no blueprint and no recipe. Deployable recyclers exist only as a community server plugin.
Myth: the recycler needs power or fuel. It needs neither. Walk up, load it, press the button.
Myth: safe zone recycling is free. It costs a third of everything you put in. That is a real price, it just is not paid in blood.
Mistake: recycling an Electric Fuse before doing a puzzle. 24 scrap is good. Opening a red keycard room is better.
Mistake: hauling propane tanks and metal blades across the map. They pay 1 to 3 scrap each. Recycle them where you find them or leave them in the crate.
Mistake: recycling tarp before you own the Hazmat Suit blueprint. Tarp has no recipe and no vendor. Sixty cloth is not worth it.
Mistake: walking away from a running recycler. There is no ownership on the machine. Someone else’s finger on your output is the most common way a good run ends badly.
Mistake: forgetting to recycle the output. Targeting computers hand you tech trash. Tech trash is worth 24 scrap each. Put it back in.
Pro Tips for Using the Recycler
- Learn where your nearest easy recycler is on wipe day. Mining Outpost, Oxum’s Gas Station or Abandoned Supermarket. Full 60%, no radiation, no puzzle, no crowd.
- Recycle before you travel, not after. Scrap and fragments stack far higher than components do, so recycling on site frees inventory slots and lightens what you lose if you die on the road.
- Never leave the machine running unattended. Anyone can open it and take everything, input included.
- Put the output back in. Targeting computers and CCTV cameras give tech trash, and tech trash is 24 scrap each. Two passes, double the value.
- Recycle duplicate guns. One assault rifle is 30 high quality metal. That is a wall upgrade you did not have to mine for.
- Keep fuses, keycards and tarp out of the input grid. All three are worth more as items than as materials.
- Bank scrap, not components. Components sit in a box waiting to be useful. Scrap goes straight into the tech tree, which is the only progress that outlives a bad night.
- Carry only bodies and fuses on a long run. Rifle bodies, SMG bodies, semi bodies and electric fuses are the densest value per inventory slot in the game.

Final Thoughts
The Recycler is not complicated, but it is one of the few things in Rust where a small habit change pays out every single wipe. The whole guide reduces to three sentences.
Recycle at a monument, not at Outpost, because the safe zone tax is a third of everything you own. Carry bodies, fuses and tech trash home and leave the blades and propane tanks where you found them. And when the machine finishes, put the tech trash back in before you walk away.
Do that from wipe day and you will be a few hundred scrap ahead of the players you are fighting by the end of the first evening, and a few thousand ahead by the weekend.
