Rust Custom Maps: Where to Get Them, How to Install & Live Server Data (2026)

Rust server guide, 2026

Join a few of the busiest Rust servers and you will notice the map does not look like the one you know. There are towns that are not on any normal island, canyons with bridges, swamps, tunnel networks and monuments with names you have never seen. Those servers are running custom maps.

This Rust custom maps guide explains what a custom map is, how many servers really run one (we checked the live server list), the main kinds of custom maps, where to download free and paid maps, how to load one on your own server with server.levelurl, how maps are made, and how to fix the errors everyone runs into.

TL;DR A custom map is a pre-built .map file instead of a map generated from a seed and size. Server owners host the file on a direct download link and load it with +server.levelurl, removing server.seed and server.worldsize. Players download the map automatically the first time they join. Maps come from Lone Design, Codefling, the RustMaps generator or editors like RustEdit. In our 27 October 2026 snapshot, only 8 of the 100 busiest servers still showed the plain “Procedural Map” name. Custom maps are a PC thing: console servers cannot load them.
Rust custom maps explained: a procedural map is built from server.seed and server.worldsize, while a custom map is a hand-made map file loaded with server.levelurl, made in RustEdit and downloaded by players when they join

What Is a Custom Map in Rust?

Almost every Rust map you have played was made by the game itself. A procedural map is generated from two numbers, the seed and the world size. The game turns those into terrain, rivers, roads and Facepunch’s own monuments, and the same pair always makes the same island.

A custom map skips that step. Someone builds the whole world ahead of time and saves it as a .map file. The server downloads that file from a web link when it starts, and every player downloads the same file when they first connect. Facepunch added this in June 2018 with the server.levelurl setting, as part of the Puzzle Update.

Under the hood there is no magic. Facepunch’s own wiki explains that every Rust map, procedural ones included, is stored in the same .map format: the terrain size, layers such as height, biome and topology, a list of prefabs with their position, rotation and scale, and the paths for rivers, roads and rails. Custom maps are just ones where a person, or an outside tool, decided what goes in that file. That is why they can have custom monuments, unusual terrain and features the procedural generator never makes.

How Many Rust Servers Run Custom Maps?

Rust custom maps live numbers on 27 October 2026: 1,468 servers with 7,501 players show Procedural Map, 560 servers with 6,867 players show Custom Map, 994 servers with 29,411 players use a renamed map label, and only 8 of the 100 busiest servers show the plain Procedural Map name
Most Rust players are on servers that do not show the plain “Procedural Map” name.

We pulled the live Steam server list behind our Rust server browser at 01:59 UTC on 27 October 2026, the day after a Monday wipe. It covered 3,022 populated servers with 43,779 players online, and every server reports a map name:

Map name shownServersPlayers onlineShare of players
“Procedural Map”1,4687,50117%
“Custom Map”5606,86716%
Renamed label (network name, wipe date, Discord link)99429,41167%

Three things stand out:

  • Big servers rarely run plain procedural. Only 8 of the 100 busiest servers showed “Procedural Map”. The rest showed “Custom Map” or their own label, such as Rustafied Custom Map, Moose Maps, Reddit Maps, RustForNoobs Generated Maps or Rusticated Generated Maps.
  • A renamed label does not always mean hand-made. Many networks generate a fresh procedural-style map every wipe, tweak it and load it as a custom file, and some servers simply put their wipe date or Discord in the map name. So the browser cannot tell you for sure how the map was made. Check the server’s Discord or website.
  • RustMaps is everywhere. 411 populated servers carried the rustmaps tag, which servers using a RustMaps map add. Our Rust server tags guide explains what that and every other tag means.

Among plain “Custom Map” servers, the busiest at the time were Helli’s Aimtrain (US, 754 players), Brasa.gg BR 2X (458) and Rustafied.com EU Monday (298), which shows how wide the range is: an aim training arena, a modded 2x and a vanilla wipe all count as custom maps.

The Four Kinds of Rust Custom Maps

Kinds of Rust custom maps: edited procedural maps from RustMaps or a server network, themed hand-made islands, remakes of classic maps like Hapis Island, and arena, aim train and build maps
Custom does not always mean hand-made.
  1. Edited procedural maps. The most common kind by far. A generator such as RustMaps builds a normal-looking island, and the owner adds or removes monuments, changes the terrain, or drops in a custom monument or two. It feels like vanilla Rust with a twist, which is why big vanilla networks use it.
  2. Hand-made themed islands. Every rock, road and building placed by a map maker. These range from post-apocalyptic cities to movie-themed islands, often with dozens of custom monuments and their own tunnel or rail systems. Popular on modded, PvE and roleplay servers.
  3. Remakes of classic maps. Maps Facepunch retired, rebuilt by the community. The best known is Hapis Island, which Facepunch retired in February 2023 and which now lives on as community custom maps.
  4. Arena, aim train and build maps. Small purpose-built maps for aim training, 1v1s, creative building or minigames. Helli’s Aimtrain, the busiest custom map server in our snapshot, is this kind.

Best Rust Custom Maps Worth Knowing

Taste varies, but these maps come up again and again in the mapping community:

  • Gravis Island by Lone, WhoisMikeJones, CollapsedOrange and Nox. It won Facepunch’s first official custom map competition in July 2021 out of 24 entries, and from 5 August 2021 it ran on Facepunch’s EU and US Small official servers, the first time Facepunch ran a custom map on its own servers. It keeps a familiar Rust feel, with mountain tunnels, ocean monuments and a clear tier progression from south-west to north-east.
  • Cacatúa by FireCr0w, the runner-up in that same competition, praised by Facepunch as the most interesting entry.
  • Hapis Island V22 (4,096 size, Codefling) and Hapis Remastered (5,000 size, free on Lone Design), community versions of the classic map. Our Hapis Island guide has the full history and live Hapis servers.
  • Themed favourites such as Last Train, Isla Nublar (Jurassic Park), Detroit: Irreparable Damage and Oregon: Land of Dead, which Lone Design lists among the most played custom maps of all time.
How Rust custom maps are made: RustEdit is a beginner friendly standalone editor with some Patreon-only tools and an Oxide extension, Rust Map Editor is an open-source Unity editor by Adsito for advanced map makers, shown with real custom map screenshots

How to Play on a Custom Map Server

Playing on a Rust custom map server: the map downloads once when you join, is saved in your Rust maps folder, shows custom monument names, and you should learn the layout because recycler spots move
The only extra step is a one-time download.

You join a custom map server exactly like any other. Find it in the server browser or our live Rust server list, or connect from the F1 console. The differences:

  • The first join downloads the map. Big custom maps can take a minute or two. Do not cancel it.
  • It is cached. Rust saves maps in the maps folder inside your Rust install, so the next join is quick until the owner swaps the file.
  • Monuments move. Recyclers, safe zones and monument loot can be anywhere, and custom monuments have their own puzzles and loot. Look at the map before wipe, or join on wipe day and scout.
  • Base spots differ. Hand-made terrain often has caves, cliffs and rock formations you will not find on procedural maps, which is great for hidden bases.

Custom map servers wipe on the same schedule as everyone else. Our Rust force wipe countdown shows the next monthly force wipe to the minute, and the just wiped servers list helps you find a fresh one.

How to Install a Custom Map on Your Rust Server

How to load a Rust custom map on a server in four steps: get the .map file, host it on a direct download link, add +server.levelurl to the start file, remove server.seed and server.worldsize and restart
The whole setup is one startup line.

If you already run a server (see our how to host a Rust server guide), switching to a custom map takes about five minutes:

  1. Get the .map file. Download it from the map’s page or export it from your editor.
  2. Upload it to a direct download link. Facepunch’s wiki says the file must sit on a public site that is up 24/7, because new players download it from that link, not from your server. A GitHub public release works. On Dropbox, change ?dl=0 at the end of the share link to ?dl=1. Paste the link in your browser: if the download starts by itself, it is a direct link.
  3. Add the level URL to your startup line (start file, daemon or server.cfg):
    +server.levelurl "https://yourhost.com/yourmap.map"
  4. Remove the procedural settings. Take +server.seed and +server.worldsize out of the startup line, then restart. The server downloads the map and builds the world.

Once it is running, admins can check which map is loaded from the F1 or RCON console:

server.levelurl
Treat a map change like a wipe Switching map files is a map wipe. Do it on wipe day, ideally on the monthly force wipe, and delete the old .map and .sav files in server/<identity>/. Custom maps save under their own file name, so a wipe script that only deletes proceduralmap.* files can leave old bases behind.

You can also point the URL at a local file with file:///path/to/your.map, but then nobody else can join, so it is only useful for testing your own map. Most hosts, including the ones in our best Rust server hosting comparison, give you file access to upload maps and a startup field for the level URL.

How to Make Your Own Rust Custom Map

Facepunch does not make a map editor. It publishes the Rust.World SDK, and the community built two editors on top of it:

RustEditRust Map Editor
TypeStandalone, click-to-run programOpen source, runs inside Unity (by Adsito)
Best forBeginners and most map makersAdvanced makers who know Unity
ToolsTerrain, splat, biome, topology, alpha and prefab editing. Some tools are Patreon only.Same basics plus deeper terrain and splat control, and you can add your own tools
Server extrasRustEdit Oxide extension: custom IO, NPC spawners, Bradley and Cargo paths, puzzles, custom vending and loot. A free Harmony mod covers custom IO only.Uses the same .map format

Facepunch’s competition judge listed what separates a good custom map from a bad one, and it is a useful checklist before you publish:

  • Prevent-building volumes on every custom monument, or players will build inside them.
  • Roads gentle enough to drive. Steep roads make cars and vehicles useless.
  • No object pop-in that hides players in PvP.
  • No leftover world objects inside monuments.
  • A clear progression from easy monuments near the spawn coast to the hard ones.

Plan on keeping the map updated. When Facepunch adds or changes prefabs in a monthly update, editors and extensions need to catch up, so re-open and re-save your map after each force wipe patch. Plugins can change gameplay on top of any map; our Rust server mods guide covers Oxide and Carbon.

Rust Custom Map Problems and Fixes

Rust custom map problems and fixes: World cache version mismatch from a non-direct link, new players unable to join when the map host is down, maps broken after a force wipe patch, old bases after a wipe and building inside monuments

Can you use custom maps on Rust Console?

No. Rust Console Edition servers run procedural maps only, and console players cannot load a map file or use the F1 console. Custom maps are a PC feature. See our Rust Console servers guide for what console server owners can change.

Rust Custom Maps FAQ

What is a custom map in Rust?

A custom map is a pre-built .map file that a server downloads with server.levelurl, instead of generating a procedural map from a seed and world size. It can have custom terrain, custom monuments and its own layout.

How do I add a custom map to my Rust server?

Upload the .map file to a direct download link, add +server.levelurl “your link” to your startup line, remove +server.seed and +server.worldsize, and restart the server. Treat it as a map wipe.

Where can I download Rust custom maps?

Lone Design and Codefling sell free and paid custom maps, and RustMaps has a custom map generator on its paid plans. You can also make your own with RustEdit or Rust Map Editor.

Are custom maps free in Rust?

Loading a custom map is free, and many maps are free to download, such as Hapis Remastered on Lone Design. Premium hand-made maps cost money, and the RustMaps custom generator needs a paid subscription.

Do players need to download custom maps?

Yes, but it happens automatically. Rust downloads the map from the server’s level URL the first time a player joins and saves it in the maps folder of the Rust install.

How many Rust servers use custom maps?

In our 27 October 2026 snapshot of 3,022 populated servers, 560 showed “Custom Map”, 1,468 showed “Procedural Map” and 994 showed a renamed label. Only 8 of the 100 busiest servers showed the plain “Procedural Map” name.

What program is used to make Rust maps?

Most map makers use RustEdit, a standalone editor with some Patreon-only tools. Advanced makers use Rust Map Editor, an open-source editor that runs in Unity. Facepunch does not make its own map editor.

Why does my custom map say World cache version mismatch?

The level URL is not a direct download link, so the server gets a web page instead of the map. On Dropbox, change ?dl=0 to ?dl=1, or host the file somewhere that starts the download straight away.

Has Facepunch ever run custom maps on official servers?

Yes. Gravis Island, the winner of Facepunch’s 2021 custom map competition, ran on Facepunch EU and US Small official servers from 5 August 2021, the first time Facepunch ran a community custom map. Facepunch’s own hand-made Hapis Island also ran on official servers until February 2023.

Can you play custom maps on Rust Console?

No. Rust Console Edition servers only run procedural maps. Custom maps are only available on PC community and modded servers.
