The F1 Grenade is Rust’s frag grenade. It costs just 60 sulfur, it goes off on a fixed fuse a few seconds after you throw it, and it is deadly to anyone standing next to it. The game describes it as “a reliable military grenade that can be thrown a short distance. Deadly at close range on detonation.”
It is a fighting tool first and a raiding tool second. F1s are great at clearing a doorway, flushing a roof camper or finishing off a turret, a barricade or a minicopter, and terrible against walls and doors. This F1 grenade Rust guide covers the craft cost, the September 2026 stack change, where to loot or buy F1s, how many it takes to break each target, and when another explosive is the smarter buy.

What Is the F1 Grenade in Rust?
The F1 is a thrown explosive with a short fixed fuse of roughly 3 seconds, which makes it far more predictable than the Beancan Grenade, whose fuse is random and which can fail to go off at all. When it blows it throws explosive damage in a radius of about 6 metres. Wikis list around 225 explosive damage at the centre, falling off with distance, so a grenade at your feet will kill or nearly kill a player in light armor.
Against buildings it is weak. Explosive damage against wood, stone and metal is scaled down hard, which is why one F1 does almost nothing to a wall. Where it shines is on things with low explosive resistance: players, NPC scientists, auto turrets, barricades, small vehicles and drones.

How to Craft an F1 Grenade in Rust
The F1 is not a default blueprint. Put one in a Research Table with 30 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 page of the tech tree. Then craft it at a Workbench 2 from:
- 30 Gun Powder, which is 60 sulfur and 90 charcoal.
- 25 Metal Fragments.
Each one takes 10 seconds, or 5 seconds at a Workbench 3. A full stack of three is 180 sulfur, which is still less than half the price of one satchel charge.
The stack change. The Breach and Clear update on September 3, 2026 cut F1, Bee Grenade, Molotov and Flashbang stacks from 5 to 3, and set Beancans to 4. Ten F1s now take four inventory slots instead of two, so a grenade-heavy kit eats far more of your inventory than it used to.
Where to Find F1 Grenades
You do not have to craft them at all. F1s are some of the most common explosives in high-tier loot:
| Source | Chance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Airdrop | About 49% | 2 to 4 |
| Locked Crate (Chinook, Oil Rig, Ghost Ship) | About 10% | 1 to 4 |
| Elite Crate | About 7% | 1 to 2 |
| Heavy Scientists | About 5% | 1 |
| Scientists (monuments, patrol boats) | About 3% | 2 to 4 |
| Military Crate | Under 1% | 1 |
The easy way is to buy them. The black market vendor at Bandit Camp sells F1 Grenades for a few scrap each, around 8 at the base price. Since NPC vendors moved to dynamic pricing the price drifts up when people buy a lot and back down over time, so expect anything from roughly 4 to 16 scrap. Scientists at Military Tunnels also throw F1s at you, which is a good reminder of how much they hurt in tight corridors.
How Many F1 Grenades? Raid Chart
| Target | F1s | Sulfur |
|---|---|---|
| Twig wall, floor or foundation | 1 | 60 |
| Stone Barricade | 3 | 180 |
| Sleeping Bag, Large Wood Box | 4 | 240 |
| Wooden Barricade | 5 | 300 |
| Sandbag Barricade, Bed | 6 | 360 |
| Furnace | 9 | 540 |
| Auto Turret | 10 | 600 |
| Concrete Barricade | 15 | 900 |
| SAM Site, Chainlink Fence | 20 | 1,200 |
| Wooden Door | 23 | 1,380 |
| Tool Cupboard | 43 | 2,580 |
| Sheet Metal Door, Ladder Hatch | 50 | 3,000 |
| Wooden Wall | 59 | 3,540 |
| Garage Door | 120 | 7,200 |
| Stone Wall | 182 | 10,920 |
| Armored Door | 200 | 12,000 |
| Sheet Metal Wall | 993 | 59,580 |
The pattern is clear. Anything with real explosive resistance, which means every door, wall and the tool cupboard, soaks F1s for a terrible sulfur price. To price out a proper route through a base, use our Rust raid calculator and bring C4, rockets or explosive ammo instead.
F1 Grenades vs Vehicles
Vehicles are where F1s earn their sulfur. A parked minicopter or a scrap heli on a roof is an easy kill, and the numbers are much kinder than on buildings:
| Vehicle | F1s | Sulfur |
|---|---|---|
| Drone | 1 | 60 |
| Motor Rowboat | 4 | 240 |
| Solo Submarine / Duo Submarine | 5 / 7 | 300 / 420 |
| Snowmobile, Motorbike | 6 | 360 |
| Scrap Transport Helicopter, RHIB | 8 | 480 |
| Minicopter | 14 | 840 |
| Attack Helicopter | 16 | 960 |
| Bradley APC | 40 | 2,400 |
| Tugboat | 68 | 4,080 |
Forty F1s for the Bradley sounds like a lot, but since they can all be bought at Bandit Camp it is a real early-wipe option. HV rockets are still the cheapest Bradley kill by a wide margin.
F1 Grenade vs Other Explosives
| Tool | Auto Turret | Wooden Door | Sheet Metal Door |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 Grenade | 10 (600) | 23 (1,380) | 50 (3,000) |
| Beancan Grenade | 16 (1,920) | 6 (720) | 18 (2,160) |
| Satchel Charge | 2 (960) | 2 (960) | 4 (1,920) |
| High Velocity Rocket | 3 (600) | 4 (800) | 11 (2,200) |
| Explosive 5.56 | 112 (2,800) | 19 (475) | 63 (1,575) |
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4) | 1 (2,200) | 1 (2,200) | 1 (2,200) |
| Molotov Cocktail | 7 (0) | 2 (0) | Immune |
Numbers in brackets are sulfur. The F1 ties the HV rocket as the cheapest sulfur kill on a turret and needs no launcher, but on doors it loses to beancans, satchels and explosive ammo. Our Rust explosives guide compares every option side by side.
How to Throw an F1 Grenade
- Put it on your hotbar and select it.
- Left click to throw. It flies in an arc and bounces, so aim a little above and short of where you want it to stop.
- Right click to stick it. The grenade attaches to a nearby surface such as a wall, a door or a ladder hatch, which is how players trap doorways.
- Count the fuse. It goes off about 3 seconds after you let go, every time.
- Back off. The blast hurts you just as much as your target, and it travels through open doorways and hatches.
F1 Grenade Tips and Counters
- Clear a room before you push. One F1 through a doorway forces everyone inside to move or take a big hit.
- Flush roof campers. Land a grenade on a roof or behind a rock and they have about 3 seconds to run into your line of fire.
- Kill turrets cheaply. Ten F1s take out an auto turret for 600 sulfur, the same as three HV rockets, and you do not need a rocket launcher.
- Trap a hatch or door. Stick an F1 next to a door or ladder hatch a defender has to open.
- Buy, do not craft, early on. Bandit Camp sells them for a few scrap, which saves your sulfur for C4 and rockets.
- Defend by closing doors. A closed door blocks the blast. Never stand in an open doorway during a fight, and wear real armor, since damage falls off with distance and protection.
