Crossbow Rust: Craft Cost, Damage, Best Arrows & Stats (2026)

Rust weapons guide, 2026

On wipe day, before anyone has a gun, the player with a crossbow runs the area. It hits harder than any bow, it makes no gunshot noise, and every player already knows how to craft it. All it costs is some wood, a little metal and two rope.

This Crossbow Rust guide covers the recipe, the real stats, which arrows to use, how it compares with the Hunting Bow, Compound Bow and Mini Crossbow, the best attachments, what fire arrows can burn and every way to get one.

TL;DR The Crossbow is a default blueprint, so you can craft it from the start of a wipe at a Workbench 1 for 200 wood, 75 metal fragments and 2 rope (30 seconds at WB1). It fires one arrow at a time and does 60 damage with a wooden arrow (90 on a headshot), the most of any bow, but it takes about 3.6 seconds to reload. Use wooden arrows for damage, HV arrows for range and fire arrows to burn twig and wood. You can also get one free from the Collect Vood mission at Bandit Camp, or find it in tool crates.

What Is the Crossbow in Rust?

The Crossbow is a single shot, mechanical arrow weapon. In the game files it is crossbow with item ID 1965232394 (see our Rust item IDs list). Unlike the Hunting Bow, you do not hold a draw: you load one arrow, aim and fire, then reload.

That makes it a slow but heavy hitter. A wooden arrow does 60 damage from the crossbow against 50 from a Hunting Bow, and the arrow flies faster and flatter. The price is the reload, which takes a few seconds between every shot. In a fight, the first arrow matters most.

It sits in the early game tier of our Rust weapons guide next to the Eoka, revolver and nailgun. It stays useful longer than most of them because it is silent, cheap to feed and great for hunting, picking off scientists and burning twig bases.

How to Craft a Crossbow in Rust

How to craft a crossbow in Rust: 200 wood, 75 metal fragments and 2 rope at a Workbench 1, 30 seconds at WB1, 15 at WB2 and 7 at WB3, with 30 scrap at a research table only for a physical blueprint
The recipe is the same all wipe; a better workbench only makes it faster.

The Crossbow is known by default. You do not need to research it or unlock it on the tech tree; you only need to stand at a Workbench Level 1.

IngredientAmountWhere to get it
Wood200Any tree, a few swings with a stone hatchet
Metal Fragments75Smelt 75 metal ore, or recycle components
Rope2Barrels, crates and tackle boxes
WorkbenchLevel 130 s at WB1, 15 s at WB2, 7 s at WB3

Researching a crossbow at a research table costs 30 scrap, but you only need to do that to get a physical blueprint item, for example to feed an Industrial Crafter. For normal crafting it is a waste of scrap.

Best Crossbow Arrows in Rust

Best crossbow arrows in Rust: wooden arrow 60 damage, high velocity arrow 48 damage with 120 speed, fire arrow 48 damage that burns wood, and bone arrow 48 damage
Wooden arrows hit hardest; the others trade damage for speed, fire or a cheaper recipe.
ArrowDamageSpeedRecipeBest for
Wooden Arrow607525 wood + 10 stone, no workbenchPlayers and animals
High Velocity Arrow4812020 wood + 5 metal fragments, WB1Long shots, less drop
Fire Arrow4860Cloth and low grade fuel, WB1Burning twig and wood
Bone Arrow4867.525 wood + 10 bone fragments, no workbenchHunting trips

Every arrow gets a 1.5x headshot multiplier. Arrows stack to 64 and can usually be picked back up after a miss, which keeps a crossbow almost free to run.

Against a naked player with 100 HP, a crossbow needs two hits, body or head. Once they wear a hoodie, wood armor or roadsign, it takes more, so the crossbow works best as an opener: land one arrow, then finish with a spear, a bow or your first gun.

Crossbow vs Hunting Bow, Compound Bow and Mini Crossbow

Crossbow vs bows in Rust: Hunting Bow 50 damage with no workbench, Crossbow 60 damage at WB1, Compound Bow 50 plus damage at WB1 and Mini Crossbow 50 damage with 4 shots at WB1
Same arrows, four very different weapons.
WeaponWooden arrow damageShotsRecipeWorkbench
Hunting Bow501, fast draw200 wood, 50 clothNone
Crossbow601, slow reload200 wood, 75 frags, 2 ropeWB1
Compound Bow50, more when fully drawn standing still1, long draw100 wood, 75 frags, 2 ropeWB1
Mini Crossbow504 before reloading200 wood, 150 frags, 1 gear, 1 ropeWB1

Pick the crossbow when you want the biggest single hit and can take your time, such as holding an angle or hunting. Pick the Hunting Bow for fast follow up shots in a close fight. The Mini Crossbow, added in the Primitive update, fires four arrows before a reload, which wins most close range bow fights.

Crossbow Attachments

Rust crossbow attachments: the holosight for a 20 percent tighter aim cone, the 8x zoom scope for long range and the lasersight for a tighter aim and hipfire cone
A holosight is the easy upgrade once you have a Workbench 2.
  • Holosight: 20% tighter aim cone and a little zoom. The best all round sight.
  • 8x Zoom Scope: long range picks, but adds recoil and hides what is next to you.
  • Lasersight: tighter aim and a much tighter hipfire cone, handy if you shoot from the hip.

A scoped crossbow is a classic way to clear roadside scientists from range without the noise of a gun pulling other players in.

Crossbow Fire Arrows vs Wood

Rust crossbow fire arrows needed: 1 for a twig wall, 5 for a sleeping bag, 6 for a tool cupboard, 4 for a wood storage box and 50 for a wooden door, while stone and higher take no fire damage
Fire only hurts twig and wood, so arrows stop working once a base is stone.
TargetFire arrowsTime with a crossbow
Twig wall, floor or foundation1About 1 second
Wood Storage Box4About 23 seconds
Sleeping Bag5About 26 seconds
Tool Cupboard6About 30 seconds
Large Wood Box7About 34 seconds
Wooden Door50About 3 minutes

The arrow count is the same from any bow; only the speed changes. Twig is free to burn, but a wooden door takes 50 arrows, so two molotovs are usually the better buy. A wood wall is quicker to hatchet on its soft side.

How to Get a Crossbow in Rust

How to get a crossbow in Rust: craft it at Workbench 1, earn it from the Collect Vood mission at Bandit Camp, loot it from tool crates (about 2.5 percent) or underwater lab crates, and recycle it for 120 wood, 45 metal fragments and 2 rope
Crafting is the normal route, but the Collect Vood mission gives one away.
  • Craft it at any Workbench 1 with the default blueprint.
  • Collect Vood mission: the Lumberjack at Bandit Camp gives a Crossbow, 15 wooden arrows and 75 scrap for 2,000 wood. See our Rust missions guide.
  • Tool crates: about a 2.5% chance, on roads and at monuments.
  • Underwater Labs: tool crates (about 2.5%) and basic crates (about 1.6%).

A spare crossbow recycles into 120 wood, 45 metal fragments and 2 rope, so it is a cheap way to get rope back for a sewing kit.

Crossbow Tips

Tip Always enter a fight loaded. With a 3.6 second reload, the arrow already in the crossbow is often the only one you get to fire, so reload as soon as you shoot, before you move.
  • Lead your target. Arrows are slow and drop with distance. Aim a little high and ahead of a running player.
  • Hunt with it. 60 damage per arrow drops deer and boar fast, and you can pick most arrows back up.
  • Carry fire arrows on early raids to burn twig, sleeping bags and tool cupboards.
  • Swap to a gun once you have one; the crossbow is a wipe day tool, not a late game weapon.

Crossbow Rust FAQ

How do you get the crossbow blueprint in Rust?

You already have it. The crossbow is a default blueprint, so every player can craft it at a Workbench Level 1 for 200 wood, 75 metal fragments and 2 rope without researching anything.

How much damage does a crossbow do in Rust?

A crossbow does 60 damage with a wooden arrow and 90 on a headshot. High velocity, fire and bone arrows do 48. That is more per arrow than the Hunting Bow, Compound Bow or Mini Crossbow.

What workbench do you need for a crossbow in Rust?

A Workbench Level 1. The craft takes 30 seconds there, 15 seconds at a Workbench 2 and 7 seconds at a Workbench 3.

Is the crossbow better than the bow in Rust?

It hits harder, 60 damage against 50, and its arrows fly faster, but it reloads much more slowly. The crossbow is better for single picks and hunting; the Hunting Bow is better for fast follow up shots up close.

What attachments go on a crossbow in Rust?

The crossbow takes the Holosight, the 8x Zoom Scope and the Lasersight. The Holosight is the best all round choice.

Can you get a free crossbow in Rust?

Yes. The Collect Vood mission from the Lumberjack at Bandit Camp rewards a Crossbow, 15 wooden arrows and 75 scrap for bringing back 2,000 wood. Crossbows also drop from tool crates.

What does a crossbow recycle into?

A crossbow recycles into 120 wood, 45 metal fragments and 2 rope at a monument recycler, or 80 wood, 30 metal fragments and 1 rope at a safe zone recycler.
