Heavy Fuse Rust: How To Get It & Power the Plant

Power Trip item guide, updated 2026

The Heavy Fuse is the item that switched the Power Plant from background scenery into the beating heart of the Rust map. It landed with the Power Trip update in August 2026, and it is the single item you feed into the plant’s new fuse boxes to bring the whole player-maintained power grid to life. Stuff enough of them in and recyclers speed up, roadside power poles switch on, the Dome starts pumping crude oil, and the Launch Site satellite event unlocks.

If you have been searching heavy fuse rust and coming up with nothing but wiki stubs, that is because the item is brand new and most guides have not caught up. This page is the full picture: what the Heavy Fuse is, exactly how to get one, how long it burns, why you can never pull it back out, and how many you need for each stage of power. We also cover the older Electric Fuse in the same guide, because the two get confused constantly and you will use both.

Every number here is cross checked against the Facepunch Power Trip devblog, Corrosion Hour’s player-maintained monument writeups and the Facepunch wiki, with a note wherever a value is still being tuned in this fresh update.

TL;DR The Heavy Fuse (fuse.highgrade) is a loot-only Power Trip item you insert into the Power Plant’s fuse boxes to power the monument grid. It drops from crates, best from Military Crates at roughly 12% and large brown crates at about 8%, and it cannot be crafted or bought. Each fuse burns for 9,600 seconds (about 2 hours 40 minutes) and cannot be removed once placed, and it runs until it expires. More fuses means more power: 1-3 fuses gives basic power, 4-9 restores recyclers, 10-17 brings the Dome oil pumps online, and 18+ unlocks the 75% red recycler, Chinook calls and the satellite crash. Spares recycle for 20 scrap. It is different from the classic Electric Fuse, which you slot into monument keycard puzzles. Values are still being tuned.

What Is the Heavy Fuse in Rust? New

The Heavy Fuse is a component item added in the Power Trip update on 6 August 2026. Its whole reason to exist is the update’s headline feature: the Power Plant is no longer permanently powered. Instead it is a player-maintained power grid that sits dead until someone loots Heavy Fuses and slots them into the special fuse boxes on site. The more fuses in the boxes, the more of the surrounding map switches on.

Think of it as a big, chunky version of the older Electric Fuse. Where a normal fuse powers one monument puzzle for a short window, a Heavy Fuse feeds a shared grid that reaches across multiple monuments at once. It is the currency of the new power system, and because it is loot only, controlling a supply of them is a genuine wipe-long objective for bigger groups.

The item’s shortname is fuse.highgrade. In your inventory it looks like a fat copper electrical cartridge stamped with the COBALT logo, which is the same corporate branding you will see on the satellite crash crates that the fully powered plant unlocks.

The two numbers to burn into memory are 9,600 seconds of burn time and 18 fuses for full power. Everything else about the item flows from those: because a fuse cannot be removed and only lasts a couple of hours, keeping the plant at full power is an ongoing job, not a one-time switch. That is the design point of the whole Power Trip system.

How To Get a Heavy Fuse in Rust

There is no recipe. You cannot craft a Heavy Fuse, you cannot research one, and no vendor sells them. The only way to get one is to loot it from crates. That makes crate-heavy monuments your farm, and it makes the item naturally scarce, which is exactly why powering the plant is meant to take a group effort rather than one lucky run.

Rust Heavy Fuse drop sources card: the Heavy Fuse is loot only with no crafting recipe, dropping roughly 12 percent of the time from Military Crates, the best single source, and roughly 8 percent from large brown crates, with a note that there is no recipe, vendor or tech tree entry and spares recycle into 20 scrap each

Large Brown Crate~8%Everywhere, but lower odds

Roughly one in eight Military Crates holds a Heavy Fuse, and about one in twelve of the big brown crates. Those odds are modest, so the practical approach is volume: run monuments that spawn a lot of crates and open every one. The Power Plant itself, the Airfield, Military Tunnels and the Oil Rig are all dense crate farms that will slowly build your stack.

These drop rates are still settling Power Trip is a fresh update, and Facepunch has flagged that fuse values may change while the system is tuned. The 12% and 8% figures come from early community data collection and match Corrosion Hour’s reporting, but expect small adjustments across the first few wipes. If a number here looks off on your server, the update tuning is the likely reason.

What Does a Heavy Fuse Do? Power Plant Phases

A Heavy Fuse on its own does nothing. Its job is to sit in the Power Plant fuse boxes and feed power into the grid. The plant has two fuse panels, a main 15-slot bank on the ground floor and a smaller one upstairs, holding roughly 20 fuses between them. The number of active fuses decides the power phase, and each phase switches on more of the map.

Rust Power Plant power phase ladder driven by Heavy Fuses: Phase 0 with 0 fuses is dead with recyclers at 50 percent, Phase 1 with 1 to 3 fuses gives 12 power and unlocks roadside poles, water valves and the airdrop caller, Phase 2 with 4 to 9 fuses gives 18 power and restores recyclers to 60 percent, Phase 3 with 10 to 17 fuses gives 24 power and brings the Dome crude oil pumps online, and Phase 4 with 18 or more fuses gives 30 power and unlocks the 75 percent red recycler, Chinook calls and the satellite crash
Four power phases, each unlocked by feeding more Heavy Fuses into the boxes.
PhaseFusesPowerWhat it unlocks
Phase 00DeadRecyclers at 50%, nothing else runs
Phase 11-312Roadside poles, water valves, airdrop caller, blue room
Phase 24-918Recyclers restored to 60% yield
Phase 310-1724Dome crude oil pumps come online
Phase 418+3075% red recycler, Chinook call, satellite crash

The early phases are cheap and pay off fast. Just one to three fuses lights up roadside power poles you can wire your base into, opens the Water Treatment water valves, and switches on the Airfield’s airdrop caller. By Phase 2 the on-site recyclers are running at full 60% yield again instead of the crippled 50%, which alone makes the plant worth powering as a recycling stop.

Phase 3 brings the Dome’s crude oil pumps online, and Phase 4 is the endgame: the brand new red recycler jumps to a 75% return, you can call a Chinook at the Airfield, and the satellite crash event at Launch Site becomes available. Reaching Phase 4 needs 18 fuses burning at once, which is a serious loot commitment and the whole reason Heavy Fuses are worth fighting over.

Burn Time and Why You Can’t Remove It

Each Heavy Fuse lasts 9,600 seconds of active power, which works out to about 2 hours and 40 minutes. During that window it is providing power to the grid, and when it expires it is simply gone. There is no way to pause it.

A placed Heavy Fuse is one way in Once you insert a Heavy Fuse into a fuse box, you cannot take it back out. It burns down in place until it expires. That means you should not overstuff the boxes past the phase you actually want, and you cannot pull fuses to deny them to the next group. Plan your run so the power lasts as long as you need it, and no longer.

This is deliberate. Because fuses cannot be removed and only last a couple of hours, the plant naturally powers down on its own unless players keep feeding it. It stops any one group from powering the map once and walking away, and it keeps the Power Plant a live contested space all wipe. If you want the satellite crash or the fast red recycler, someone has to keep the boxes topped up.

Heavy Fuse vs Electric Fuse in Rust

This is where most of the confusion lives, so let us settle it. Rust now has two fuses, and they do different jobs. The classic Electric Fuse goes into monument keycard puzzles. The new Heavy Fuse goes into the Power Plant grid. They are not interchangeable.

Rust Heavy Fuse versus Electric Fuse comparison, both item renders shown: the Electric Fuse is a long-standing item that goes in monument puzzle boxes to open a card puzzle for a short window, stacks to 10 and recycles into 24 scrap, while the Heavy Fuse is a Power Trip item from August 2026 that goes in the Power Plant fuse boxes to power the monument grid, burns for 9,600 seconds or about 2 hours 40 minutes and recycles into 20 scrap, and both are loot only

If you turn up at a keycard puzzle with a Heavy Fuse, it will not work, because the puzzle wants the standard Electric Fuse. And if you try to power the plant grid with an Electric Fuse, that will not work either. Carry both if you plan to do puzzles and power the plant on the same run.

What Is the Electric Fuse in Rust?

The Electric Fuse (shortname fuse) is the original, and it has been the key to monument puzzles for years. It is a small, unreliable-looking fuse described in game as allowing “electrical passthrough for a period of time.” You slot it into a fuse box at a monument to start the power flowing, which opens the timed doors on a keycard puzzle so you can loot the reward room.

Like the Heavy Fuse, the Electric Fuse cannot be crafted. Your best source by far is the Tech Parts crate, which drops one or two fuses about 26.5% of the time, but they also come from underwater crates, large brown crates and dead scientists. Because they stack to 10 and are cheap to find, most players keep a handful on hand for puzzle runs. Spare fuses recycle into 24 scrap at a normal recycler, or 16 at a safe-zone one, so they are never wasted.

Which Monuments Need a Fuse in Rust?

Most keycard puzzles need an Electric Fuse to start the timer, but the exact requirement varies by monument, and a couple of famous ones need no fuse at all. Here is the full breakdown so you know what to pack.

Rust table of which monuments need an Electric Fuse: green puzzles at Harbor, Sewer Branch and Satellite Dish need a green card plus one fuse, the Water Treatment Plant needs a blue card plus one fuse, the classic Power Plant puzzle needs green and blue cards plus one fuse, the Airfield needs green and blue cards plus two fuses, and Launch Site needs green and red cards plus two fuses, while the Missile Silo needs a red card and NO fuse and both Oil Rigs need no cards and NO fuse

Harbor, Sewer Branch, Satellite DishGreen1
Water Treatment PlantBlue1
Power Plant (classic puzzle)Green + Blue1
AirfieldGreen + Blue2
Launch SiteGreen + Red2
Missile SiloRedNone
Oil Rig (small & large)NoneNone

The two big exceptions are worth remembering because they trip people up constantly. The Missile Silo is a red-card monument but needs no fuse at all, and both Oil Rigs use a timed hackable crate rather than a fuse puzzle, so they need neither cards nor fuses. Everywhere else, budget at least one Electric Fuse, and two for the Airfield and Launch Site.

Classic puzzle vs the new grid at the Power Plant The Power Plant now has two separate power systems. Its old keycard puzzle still needs a green card, a blue card and one Electric Fuse to loot the reward room. That is completely separate from the new Heavy Fuse grid that powers the wider map. You can run the puzzle without touching the grid, and vice versa.

How To Use a Fuse in Rust

Whether it is a Heavy Fuse for the grid or an Electric Fuse for a puzzle, the moves are the same. Find the box, drop the fuse in, do the job.

Rust how to use a fuse, five steps: loot a Heavy Fuse from crates or an Electric Fuse for a puzzle, find the fuse box at the Power Plant panels or a monument puzzle box, hold E to insert the fuse and start the power, do the job by flipping switches or swiping a keycard, and let it burn because a Heavy Fuse cannot be pulled back out once placed
The same five moves for both fuses, from loot to lit.
  1. Loot a fuse. Grab a Heavy Fuse from crates for the grid, or an Electric Fuse for a keycard puzzle.
  2. Find the fuse box. For the grid, that is the Power Plant’s two fuse panels. For a puzzle, it is the fuse box beside the first switch, usually near a repair bench.
  3. Insert it. Hold E on the box and place the fuse to start the power flowing.
  4. Do the job. Flip the switches and swipe your keycard on a puzzle, or watch the grid come alive and monuments light up.
  5. Let it burn. A Heavy Fuse cannot be pulled back out, so it runs until it expires. An Electric Fuse only lasts a short window, so move fast.

Heavy Fuse Rust Pro Tips

A few habits will save you fuses, scrap and a wasted trip to the plant.

Six Rust Heavy Fuse tips: Heavy Fuses are loot only so farm crate-heavy monuments, a Heavy Fuse burns for about 2 hours 40 minutes and cannot be removed so time your run, 18 fuses is full power so do not overfill, the Power Plant is a radtown not a safe zone so bring a hazmat suit and meds, recycle spare Heavy Fuses for 20 scrap and Electric Fuses for 24 scrap, and an Electric Fuse only lasts a short window in a puzzle so do not idle
Six things to remember before you head to the Power Plant.
  • Stockpile before you commit. Heavy Fuses are loot only, so farm crate-heavy monuments and build a stack before you try to power the plant.
  • Time your run. Each fuse burns for about 2h 40m and cannot be removed, so power the plant when you can actually use the window.
  • Do not overfill. 18 fuses is full power. Anything past that is wasted loot you will never get back.
  • Bring a hazmat. The Power Plant is a radtown, not a safe zone, so pack a hazmat suit and meds for the hot rooms.
  • Recycle spares. Extra Heavy Fuses melt for 20 scrap and Electric Fuses for 24, so nothing sits dead in your box.
  • Carry both fuses. If you plan to run puzzles and power the grid, pack Electric Fuses and Heavy Fuses, since neither does the other’s job.

Heavy Fuse Rust FAQ

How do you get a Heavy Fuse in Rust?
Heavy Fuses are loot only. You cannot craft, research or buy one. They drop from crates, with the best odds from Military Crates at roughly 12% and large brown crates at about 8%. The practical way to farm them is to run crate-heavy monuments like the Power Plant, Airfield, Military Tunnels and Oil Rig and open every crate. These drop rates are still being tuned in the new Power Trip update.
How long does a Heavy Fuse last in Rust?
A Heavy Fuse burns for 9,600 seconds, which is about 2 hours and 40 minutes of active power. Once that runs out the fuse is consumed and gone. Because it cannot be removed once placed, the Power Plant naturally powers back down unless players keep feeding fresh fuses into the boxes.
Can you remove a Heavy Fuse once it is placed?
No. Once you insert a Heavy Fuse into a Power Plant fuse box it cannot be taken back out. It burns down in place until it expires. This means you should not overfill the boxes past the power phase you actually want, and you cannot pull fuses out to deny them to another group.
How many Heavy Fuses do you need to power the Power Plant?
It depends on how much power you want. 1 to 3 fuses gives basic Phase 1 power (roadside poles, water valves, airdrop caller), 4 to 9 restores the recyclers to 60% yield, 10 to 17 brings the Dome crude oil pumps online, and 18 or more reaches full Phase 4 power, which unlocks the 75% red recycler, Chinook calls and the satellite crash. The boxes hold roughly 20 fuses in total.
What is the difference between a Heavy Fuse and an Electric Fuse in Rust?
They are two different items. The Electric Fuse (shortname fuse) goes into monument keycard puzzles to open the timed reward room. The Heavy Fuse (fuse.highgrade) is a new Power Trip item that goes into the Power Plant fuse boxes to power the wider monument grid. They are not interchangeable, both are loot only, and you will want to carry both if you plan to run puzzles and power the plant on the same trip.
Where do you get an Electric Fuse in Rust?
The Electric Fuse is loot only and cannot be crafted. Your best source is the Tech Parts crate, which drops one or two fuses about 26.5% of the time. They also come from underwater crates, large brown crates and dead scientists. They stack to 10, so most players keep a few on hand for puzzle runs.
What are fuses for in Rust?
Fuses power electrical systems at monuments. The classic Electric Fuse starts the timer on keycard puzzles so you can loot the reward room, for example at the Water Treatment Plant, Airfield or Launch Site. The new Heavy Fuse powers the Power Plant grid, which switches on recyclers, roadside power poles, the Dome oil pumps and the satellite crash event across the map.
Can you craft a fuse in Rust?
No. Neither the Electric Fuse nor the Heavy Fuse can be crafted, researched or bought from a vendor. Both are loot only. The Electric Fuse comes mainly from Tech Parts and other crates, and the Heavy Fuse drops from Military and brown crates. If you need fuses, you have to go looting.
Can you recycle a Heavy Fuse or Electric Fuse in Rust?
Yes. A Heavy Fuse recycles into 20 scrap. An Electric Fuse recycles into 24 scrap at a normal recycler, or 16 at a safe-zone recycler. Both are worth melting down if you have spares you will not use before the wipe.
Which monuments do not need a fuse in Rust?
The Missile Silo is a red-card monument but needs no Electric Fuse, and both the Small and Large Oil Rigs use a timed hackable crate instead of a fuse puzzle, so they need neither cards nor fuses. Almost every other keycard puzzle, including the Water Treatment Plant, Airfield, Power Plant and Launch Site, does need at least one fuse.
Does the Heavy Fuse work in monument puzzles?
No. The Heavy Fuse only works in the Power Plant’s grid fuse boxes. Monument keycard puzzles need the standard Electric Fuse. If you turn up to a puzzle with only Heavy Fuses, you will not be able to start it, so keep the two items separate in your loadout.
