The Assault Rifle is the gun that defines the mid and late game in Rust. In game it is simply called the “Assault Rifle”, but every player on the server calls it the AK, because the model is an AK-47 and it fills the exact role a real AK fills: the loud, hard hitting, do everything rifle you fight the whole wipe to hold. It does more damage per shot than any other craftable gun, it takes every 5.56 round in the game, and it has the meanest recoil of anything you can build. Learn to control it and you win most fights on even footing. Do not, and it will spray all over the sky.
This is the weapon that separates a naked spawn from a threat. The Eoka and the Thompson get you started, but the assault rifle in Rust is where the ceiling on your kit stops being about gear and starts being about aim. An AK in trained hands beats an AK in shaky ones every single time, no matter who has the better base.
This assault rifle Rust guide covers all of it: the real stats, the full crafting recipe and how to unlock the blueprint, where to loot one on wipe day, the recoil and spray pattern that make or break it, the four ammo types, the best attachments, how it stacks up against the M249 and LR-300, and what a spare AK is worth in a recycler after the Power Trip update from 6 August 2026. Every number here is checked against the Facepunch wiki, RustClash, RustHelp and Corrosion Hour, not guessed.

What Is the Assault Rifle in Rust?
The Assault Rifle is Rust’s flagship 5.56 rifle, a fully automatic AK-47 that sits at the top of the craftable weapon ladder. Facepunch’s own item name for it is literally “Assault Rifle”, and its shortname in the game files is rifle.ak. That double naming trips up new players constantly: when someone in chat says they got an “AK”, and someone else says they crafted an “assault rifle”, they are talking about the same gun.
What makes it the benchmark weapon is the combination of damage and availability. At 50 damage a shot it out hits every other craftable primary in the game, and unlike the M249, which you can only loot, you can actually build the AK yourself once you hit Workbench 3. That means an AK is a repeatable, replaceable weapon. Die with it, craft another. That single fact is why the AK, not the rarer M249, is the gun most fights are actually decided with.
The catch, and there is always a catch in Rust, is control. The AK has the hardest recoil of any craftable gun. Facepunch has reworked its recoil several times over the years, most notably cutting its aim cone by 80% in Devblog 173 and turning it into a learnable pattern rather than a random spray. The result is a gun that is deadly accurate if you can control the kick and useless if you cannot. More on that in the recoil section below.
Assault Rifle Rust Stats
Here are the full, verified Rust AK stats. Damage is per body shot with standard 5.56 Rifle Ammo; a headshot doubles it.
| Stat | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Damage per shot | 50 | Highest of any craftable rifle |
| Headshot multiplier | x2 (100) | One tap kills most unarmoured players |
| Rate of fire | 450 RPM | Full auto |
| Firing DPS | 375.1 | Damage x RPM / 60, before reloads |
| Magazine | 30 rounds | Extendable with a mag mod |
| Reload | ~4.4 seconds | Faster than the M249’s 7.5s |
| Ammo | 5.56 Rifle Ammo | All four 5.56 types |
| Workbench | Level 3 | Needed to craft |
| Craft cost | 200 Wood + 50 HQM + 4 Springs + 1 Rifle Body | 45 second craft |
| Blueprint | 120 scrap (research table) or tech tree | Not known by default |
| Repair | 40 Wood + 13 HQM | At a repair bench |
| Stack size | 1 | Weapons never stack |
| Despawn | 1 hour | On the ground |
| Shortname / ID | rifle.ak / 1545779598 | For admins and plugins |
The headline is that DPS number sitting next to the craft cost. Nothing else you can build hits for 50 a shot. The semi auto rifle and the LR-300 both cap out around 40, and only the drop only M249 and HMLMG beat the AK on raw damage. For a gun you can make in your own base off a scrap unlock, that is the best damage in the game.
How to Craft the Assault Rifle in Rust
The AK is a Workbench 3 craft, which puts it firmly in mid to late game. You need two things: the blueprint unlocked, and the materials in your inventory.
The recipe. One Assault Rifle costs 200 Wood, 50 High Quality Metal, 4 Metal Springs and 1 Rifle Body at a Workbench Level 3, and the craft takes 45 seconds. The wood and metal are trivial by the time you are at WB3. The real bottlenecks are the springs and the Rifle Body.
- Unlock the blueprint. The AK is not known by default. Put an Assault Rifle on a research table with 120 scrap to learn it, or unlock it on the tier 3 tech tree. Research is the cheaper route if you have already looted one.
- Get a Rifle Body. It is a component, not a raw material. You loot Rifle Bodies from crates and barrels, or craft one from 25 High Quality Metal. Recycling a spare AK also has a good chance of returning its Rifle Body.
- Get Metal Springs. You need 4. Springs come from recycling components like Gears, Sewing Kits and Road Signs, or you loot them directly.
- Build the workbench. Workbench 3 itself is the biggest gate. It costs the most and, since the Meta Shift update, needs Advanced Blueprint Fragments on top of scrap.
- Craft it. With the blueprint learned and the parts in hand, queue the AK at any Workbench 3. 45 seconds later you are armed.
How to Get an Assault Rifle in Rust
There are two routes to an AK, and which one you use depends entirely on how far into the wipe you are.
Craft it (the reliable way). Once you have a Workbench 3 and the blueprint, you can make an AK any time you have the parts. This is how most players hold an AK for most of a wipe. It is repeatable and predictable, which matters because you will lose AKs, and a craftable gun you can replace beats a rare gun you are scared to use.
Loot it (the wipe day way). Early in a wipe, before anyone has a WB3, a looted AK is a genuine power spike. The best sources are Elite Crates and the hackable Locked Crate. According to community loot tables, the Locked Crate has the best single chance of dropping an Assault Rifle or LR-300, which is why players race to hack them on Bradley runs and cargo. AKs also drop at a low rate from Helicopter Crates, APC Crates and military crates.
Where to Loot an Assault Rifle
Elite Tier Crates are the classic AK source, and they spawn at the game’s high tier monuments. If you are hunting an early AK, these are the spots to check:
| Location | What you fight | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Launch Site | Scientists + Bradley | Most elite crates on the map, plus a Locked Crate and Bradley |
| Military Tunnels | Heavy scientists | Elite crates in a tight, defensible layout |
| Oil Rig | Scientists + heavies | Elite crates plus a guaranteed timed Locked Crate |
| Cargo Ship | Scientists | Two Locked Crates, the best single AK odds on the map |
Assault Rifle Ammo Types
The AK fires every 5.56 Rifle Ammo type in the game, and picking the right one for the job is a real skill difference. Damage below is per body shot from the AK.
- 5.56 Rifle Ammo (standard). 50 damage, 375 DPS. The default. Cheapest to make, most accurate, and what you run for almost all PvP.
- HV 5.56. Same 50 damage, but a much faster bullet (roughly 480 m/s versus 375). Flatter drop and less lead needed, so it is the best round for long range fights.
- Incendiary 5.56. Around 56 damage, 420 DPS, the highest damage per 5.56 shot in the game, and it sets small fires. Great for punishing an enemy who breaks line of sight, but the tracer gives your position away.
- Explosive 5.56. 50 plus a small explosive splash, with a wider aim cone. This is raiding ammo: it chips at soft walls and doors, but the extra spread makes it worse for aimed PvP.
Assault Rifle Recoil & Spray Pattern
This is the section that actually decides whether you win fights. The AK is easy to own and hard to master, and the entire difficulty lives in its recoil.
The AK spray has two phases. Shots one through four are almost pure vertical climb, so you counter them by pulling your mouse straight down. Shots five and onward add an unpredictable left and right kick on top of the vertical, and the vertical climb accelerates. The pattern is partly randomised, so you cannot memorise one exact path the way you could in older versions of Rust. Instead you learn the general shape and react to the horizontal kick as it happens.
It was not always this way. Facepunch has reworked AK recoil repeatedly. Devblog 173 cut the aim cone by 80% and made the pattern learnable; later balance passes in the 2024 weapon updates reduced horizontal recoil and delayed the movement penalty until after the first few shots, which made short mobile taps more viable. The takeaway for 2026 is simple: the AK rewards trigger discipline more than any other gun in Rust.
AK vs LR-300 vs MP5: Which Rifle Should You Run?
The AK is not automatically the right gun for every fight. The two rifles it gets compared to most are the LR-300 and the MP5A4, and each wins in a different situation.
| Gun | Damage | RPM | DPS | Recoil | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AK-47 (Assault Rifle) | 50 | 450 | 375 | Hardest | All ranges, highest damage |
| LR-300 | 40 | 500 | 333 | Soft | Forgiving mid range aim |
| MP5A4 | 40 | 600 | 375 | Low | Close range spray |
AK vs LR-300. This is the classic Rust rifle debate. The AK does 25% more damage per shot (50 versus 40), which means fewer bullets to a kill, but the LR-300 has noticeably softer recoil and is far easier to control on full auto. The rule of thumb: run the AK once your aim is steady enough to punish that extra damage, and run the LR-300 while you are still learning, because it forgives the misses the AK would not. The LR-300 is also rarer to craft, needing an SMG Body rather than a Rifle Body.
AK vs MP5A4. The MP5 fires faster (600 RPM) and has very controllable recoil, which makes it a monster inside a base or at close range. But it does less damage and drops off hard past medium range. The AK is the better all rounder; the MP5 is the specialist you bring for tight interior fights and roofcamp defence.
Best Assault Rifle Attachments
The AK takes almost every weapon mod in the game, and the right build makes the recoil dramatically more manageable.
- Holosight Best Cuts aim cone by 20% and gives a clean, uncluttered sight picture. The default optic for most AK builds.
- Weapon Lasersight Best Cuts aim cone by 20% and hip aim sway by a huge 90%. Cheap and always worth running.
- Muzzle Brake Removes 50% recoil and all aim sway, at the cost of 15% damage. The single biggest recoil reduction you can bolt on, and the standard pick for spray fights.
- 8x Zoom Scope For long range work. It adds 50% recoil to fight, so pair it with a muzzle brake and short taps.
- Muzzle Boost Adds 10% fire rate but widens the aim cone. A higher risk, higher reward pick for aggressive close range players.
- Military Silencer Removes the muzzle flash and tracer and hides you off the compass, at the cost of 25% damage and velocity. A roaming and ambush tool, not a duel tool.
- Extended Magazine More rounds before a reload, with a small handling penalty. Situational.
Assault Rifle Recycle Value
A spare AK is not just a backup gun, it is a pile of High Quality Metal waiting to happen, and since the Power Trip update on 6 August 2026, exactly how much metal depends on which recycler you use.
The exact numbers scale with the recycler’s yield tier, but the useful headline is that a spare AK also has roughly a 60% chance of returning its Rifle Body on top of the metal and springs. That component is worth more than the raw HQM, since a Rifle Body is one full step toward your next AK. The rule is simple: never drop or destroy a spare Assault Rifle, always recycle it, and if you can reach the powered Power Plant recycler, do it there for the best return.
Assault Rifle Pro Tips
- Learn the spray on a wall first. Do not learn AK recoil in a real fight. Empty a few mags into a wall or an aimtrain course until pulling down for the first four shots is automatic.
- Burst at range, spray up close. Two to five round taps are accurate almost everywhere. Save the full 30 round hold for point blank.
- Carry HV rounds for long fights. The flatter bullet drop makes hitting distant targets far easier than standard 5.56.
- Always research a looted AK. If you find one before WB3, put it on a research table for 120 scrap. A learned blueprint means you can rebuild for the rest of the wipe.
- Recycle spares, do not hoard them. A spare AK is a Rifle Body and a stack of HQM. It is worth more recycled than sitting in a box.
- Repairs cost condition. Every repair chips away at the gun’s maximum condition, so top up before a fight that matters rather than after every scuffle.
- It all wipes anyway. Your AK, your blueprint and your base reset on the monthly force wipe, so there is no reason to save a “special” AK. Use it.
Don’t get caught mid grind by the wipe. The monthly force wipe resets the map, your base, your blueprints and every AK you own. Check the live countdown before you commit to a Workbench 3 push.

How do you get the Assault Rifle in Rust?
Two ways. You craft it at a Workbench 3 from 200 Wood, 50 High Quality Metal, 4 Metal Springs and 1 Rifle Body once you have unlocked the blueprint, or you loot one from a crate. The best loot sources are Elite Crates at high tier monuments like Launch Site, Military Tunnels and Oil Rig, and the hackable Locked Crate, which has the best single chance of dropping an AK. Crafting is the reliable route; looting is how you get an early one before you have a Workbench 3.
Is the assault rifle the same as the AK in Rust?
Yes. The gun’s in game name is Assault Rifle and its item shortname is rifle.ak, but almost every player calls it the AK because the model is an AK-47. When someone says AK, AK-47 or assault rifle in Rust, they mean the same weapon. It is not the same as the LR-300, which is a separate, softer recoiling rifle.
How much damage does the assault rifle do in Rust?
50 damage per body shot with standard 5.56 Rifle Ammo, doubled to 100 on a headshot. At 450 rounds per minute that is a firing DPS of about 375. Incendiary 5.56 raises it to roughly 56 damage per shot, the highest damage of any 5.56 round in the game. That 50 base damage is the highest of any craftable rifle; only the drop only M249 and HMLMG hit harder.
What workbench do you need to craft the AK in Rust?
Workbench Level 3, the highest tier. You also need the blueprint unlocked, which you get by researching an Assault Rifle for 120 scrap at a research table or by unlocking it on the tier 3 tech tree. The craft itself costs 200 Wood, 50 High Quality Metal, 4 Metal Springs and 1 Rifle Body and takes 45 seconds.
How do you unlock the assault rifle blueprint in Rust?
The AK is not known by default. Put an Assault Rifle on a research table with 120 scrap to learn it permanently for that wipe, or unlock it on the tier 3 tech tree by working up the WB3 tree with scrap. If you loot an AK before you have a Workbench 3, researching it is almost always the better move because scrap is easy to farm and a learned blueprint lets you rebuild the gun as many times as you like.
What ammo does the assault rifle use in Rust?
All four 5.56 Rifle Ammo types. Standard 5.56 does 50 damage and is the cheapest and most accurate. HV 5.56 does the same damage but travels faster for a flatter drop, making it best at long range. Incendiary 5.56 does about 56 damage, the highest per shot, and sets small fires. Explosive 5.56 does 50 plus a small splash and chips at walls, but its wider aim cone makes it a raiding round rather than a PvP one.
Why is the AK recoil so hard in Rust?
The AK has the hardest recoil of any craftable gun by design. The first four shots climb almost straight up, so you pull your mouse straight down, and from the fifth shot the pattern adds an unpredictable left and right kick on top of the climb. It is partly randomised, so you learn the general shape and react rather than memorising an exact path. Facepunch cut the AK’s aim cone by 80% in Devblog 173, which made the pattern learnable, so a controlled AK is extremely accurate. The fix is practice: burst instead of holding, and drill the spray on a wall before you bet a fight on it.
Is the AK or the LR-300 better in Rust?
It depends on your aim. The AK does 50 damage per shot to the LR-300’s 40, so it kills in fewer bullets, but the LR-300 has much softer recoil and is far easier to control on full auto. Run the AK once your aim is steady enough to land that extra damage, and run the LR-300 while you are learning, because it forgives misses the AK would punish. The LR-300 is also harder to craft, needing an SMG Body instead of a Rifle Body.
What are the best attachments for the AK in Rust?
A Holosight and a Muzzle Brake is the standard spray build: the holosight cuts aim cone 20% for a clean sight picture and the muzzle brake removes 50% recoil and all aim sway for a small 15% damage trade. A Weapon Lasersight is cheap and always worth it for the 90% hip aim sway reduction. For long range, swap the holosight for an 8x Zoom Scope and accept the extra recoil. Skip the silencer for duels, since losing 25% damage drops the AK below its usual one to two shot breakpoints.
How rare is the assault rifle in Rust?
Not rare, and that is the point. Unlike the M249, which you can only loot, the AK is fully craftable, so once you reach Workbench 3 and learn the blueprint you can make as many as you can afford. Looting one early in a wipe is a coin flip from elite and locked crates, but by mid wipe most established players are crafting AKs on demand. It is the standard endgame primary, not a trophy.
How much does the assault rifle recycle for in Rust?
It scales with the recycler’s yield tier, which the August 2026 Power Trip update tied to the Power Plant grid. A spare AK returns wood, High Quality Metal and Metal Springs, with the red Power Plant recycler paying the most and a safe zone recycler at Outpost or Bandit Camp paying the least. Crucially, every recycler also rolls roughly a 60% chance to return the AK’s Rifle Body, which is worth more than the raw metal. Always recycle spare AKs rather than dropping them.
Can you repair the assault rifle in Rust?
Yes, at a repair bench for about 40 Wood and 13 High Quality Metal. As with every weapon in Rust, each repair permanently removes a slice of the gun’s maximum condition, so an AK cannot be repaired forever. Because the AK is craftable, though, this matters less than it does for a looted M249: when a repaired AK finally wears out, you just build another.
Do AK skins change stats in Rust?
No. Every skin in Rust is purely cosmetic and has zero effect on damage, recoil, magazine, fire rate or accuracy. That applies to all Assault Rifle skins, from market skins like Alien Red and Glory to Twitch drop skins. There is no pay to win AK skin. A default AK and the most expensive skinned AK shoot exactly the same.
Is the AK good for raiding in Rust?
Only in a narrow way. Loaded with Explosive 5.56, the AK can chip through soft walls, wooden doors and window bars, and it is the cheapest way to open a twig or wood base. But against stone, sheet metal or armoured structures it is hopelessly inefficient compared to real raiding tools. For serious raids you want rockets, C4 or satchels; check the raid cost on our calculator before you waste explosive ammo on a hard wall.
