A silencer is the difference between a fight you start and a fight that finds you. Fire an unsilenced AK on a quiet beach and every group within a hundred metres knows where you are. Fire a silenced one and the muzzle flash, the tracers and most of the noise are gone. Since June 2025 Rust has three of them: the Military Silencer, the Oil Filter Silencer and the Soda Can Silencer, and they are not the same at all.
This Rust silencer guide covers what a silencer actually does, the damage and velocity cost of each one, how long they last, how to craft the two cheap ones, where the Military Silencer drops, every gun that can take one, the best silencer builds, recycle values and the full history of the attachment. If you are planning a fresh start, our Rust force wipe countdown shows exactly when the next wipe lands.

What Does a Silencer Do in Rust?
Every silencer goes in the muzzle slot of a gun and does the same three things:
- No muzzle flash. The bright flash at the end of the barrel is gone, which matters most at night and when you are shooting from a bush or a window.
- No tracers. Your bullets stop leaving a visible line back to you, so a missed shot does not point straight at your position.
- Much quieter shots. Facepunch cut the silenced sound range to 40 metres back in Devblog 131, while normal gunfire carries well past 100 metres. At range, a silenced shot is hard to place.
The price is damage and bullet speed. A silencer lowers both, so every shot hits softer and drops more over distance. There is no accuracy bonus any more: Facepunch removed the silencer’s accuracy bonus in the July 2022 update, so a silencer never makes your spray tighter. For that you want a muzzle brake or a laser.
Silencers are built for ambushes, roaming and quiet farming of monuments, not for long firefights. Facepunch said exactly that when they reworked them in June 2025: they want silencers to be a surprise tool, not something everyone runs all the time.

The Military Silencer is the old silencer. It used to be craftable, but in June 2025 Facepunch renamed it and turned it into loot only. Its durability did not change, so one Military Silencer still lasts many magazines. The two new ones are deliberately worse: they cost a little more damage and velocity and they wear out five times faster.
All item IDs and shortnames are also on our Rust item IDs page, which you can use with the admin inventory.give command.
How Long Does a Silencer Last?
Facepunch gave the durability of the two new silencers in assault rifle shots with normal 5.56 ammo:
- Soda Can Silencer: about 12 shots. That is less than half an AK magazine. It has only 15 condition and loses it four times faster than normal.
- Oil Filter Silencer: about 48 shots, so one and a half AK magazines. It has 60 condition, also with +400% durability loss.
- Military Silencer: 100 condition with normal wear. It lasts many magazines, which is why it is the one everybody wants.
Two things make silencers break faster. Weapons with a higher fire rate burn through them quicker per second, and explosive ammo wears both the gun and the silencer much faster than normal rounds. You can repair a damaged silencer at a repair bench (about 3 HQM for a Military Silencer, 2 HQM for an Oil Filter and 8 metal fragments for a Soda Can), but each repair lowers its maximum condition, so the cheap ones are usually not worth fixing. Craft a new one instead.
How to Craft a Silencer in Rust
You can only craft the Soda Can and Oil Filter silencers. Neither is a default blueprint, so you need to learn them first:
- Get the blueprint. Put a silencer you found or bought into a research table with 20 scrap. Or unlock it on the tech tree: the node itself is 1 blueprint, but reaching it from an empty tree costs about 405 scrap on the Workbench 1 tree for the Soda Can and about several Blueprint Fragments on the Workbench 2 tree for the Oil Filter.
- Stand at the right bench. The Soda Can needs a Workbench 1. The Oil Filter needs a Workbench 2.
- Craft it. Soda Can: 40 metal fragments, 15 seconds. Oil Filter: 10 high quality metal, 25 seconds. A higher workbench crafts them faster.
| Silencer | Recipe | Workbench | Time | Research | Tech tree path |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soda Can Silencer | 40 Metal Fragments | Workbench 1 | 15 s | 15 scrap | several Blueprint Fragments |
| Oil Filter Silencer | 10 High Quality Metal | Workbench 2 | 25 s | 15 scrap | several Blueprint Pages |
| Military Silencer | Cannot be crafted | – | – | Cannot be researched | Not on the tree |
Some item sites still show a “15 HQM, Workbench 3” recipe for the Military Silencer. That recipe is hidden in the game files and only decides what it gives back in a recycler. You cannot craft it.
Where to Find the Military Silencer
Facepunch said the Military Silencer should come from high end monuments, and that is where it drops. Loot chances move a little between data sources, so treat these as rough numbers:
| Source | Chance | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Elite crate | About 1.9% to 2.4% | 1 to 2 |
| Underwater Lab elite crate | About 1.9% to 2.4% | 1 to 2 |
| Scientist PT boat drybox | About 2.8% | 1 to 3 |
| Patrol helicopter crate | About 0.7% to 0.8% | 1 |
| Heavy scientists (Oil Rig and Bradley) | About 0.25% to 0.3% | 1 |
| Large present (Christmas) | About 6.7% | 1 |
The best farm is a run of elite crates: Launch Site, Military Tunnels, the Underwater Labs and the Oil Rigs all have them. Heavy scientists on the Large Oil Rig and around Bradley can drop it too, but the chance is tiny. In December, large presents are one of the easiest ways to get one.
The Soda Can and Oil Filter silencers are not listed in any crate table. You get them by crafting them or by killing a player who has one.
Which Guns Can Use a Silencer in Rust?
All three silencers fit exactly the same weapons. Here is the full list:
| Type | Takes a silencer |
|---|---|
| Rifles | Assault Rifle (AK) and its skins, LR-300, M16A2, Semi-Auto Rifle, SKS, M39 |
| Snipers | Bolt Action Rifle, L96 |
| Machine guns | M249, HMLMG |
| SMGs | MP5A4, Thompson, Custom SMG, Handmade SMG |
| Pistols | Semi-Auto Pistol (P2), M15 Semi-Auto Pistol, M92, Revolver, Prototype 17 |
| Shotguns | Pump Shotgun, Spas-12, M4 Shotgun, Krieg Shotgun |
Guns that cannot take a silencer: the Python Revolver (it has sight and laser slots but no muzzle slot), the Double Barrel Shotgun, the Waterpipe Shotgun, the Eoka, the Nailgun, bows and crossbows, and launchers. The plain Revolver is the opposite of the Python: it has no sight slot, but it does take silencers, a muzzle brake and a muzzle boost.
Best Silencer Builds
Because a silencer cuts damage, the best guns to silence are the ones where the lost damage hurts least or where staying hidden is worth more than winning a long duel:
- Early game roamer: P2 + Soda Can Silencer + Holosight. A Workbench 1 silencer on a Semi-Auto Pistol is the classic cheap roaming kit. You lose some damage, but you can pick off farmers without the whole area hearing it.
- Mid game: Thompson or Custom SMG + Oil Filter Silencer. Great for clearing monuments quietly, as long as you watch the shot count. Do not run it in a base fight.
- Sniper: Bolt Action or L96 + any silencer. This is where silencers are best. A Bolt Action fires slowly, so even a Soda Can lasts a while, and a missed shot does not give your spot away. Practise with it first, because the slower bullet drops more.
- Night raids and ambush: AK + Military Silencer. If you find a Military Silencer, save it for nights, door camps and counter raids, where no flash and no tracers matter most. For day fights, swap to a muzzle brake.
Skip silencers on the M249 and HMLMG in a real fight. They spray a lot of bullets, so the cheap silencers break almost at once, and the damage loss drops them below an AK.
Silencer vs Muzzle Brake vs Muzzle Boost
All of these use the same muzzle slot, so you have to pick one:
| Attachment | What it does | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military Silencer | No flash, no tracers, quiet | -25% damage and velocity | Ambush, night, sniping |
| Oil Filter / Soda Can Silencer | Same as above, short life | -30% damage, -30% / -35% velocity | Cheap roaming |
| Muzzle Brake | Less recoil | Less damage, wider aim cone | Spraying close to mid range |
| Muzzle Boost | +10% fire rate | Less damage | Close range DPS |
For straight up fights a muzzle brake almost always wins, because it keeps your spray on target. The silencer wins when you shoot first and the other side does not know where you are. Our aim training guide has a routine for practising both.
What Do Silencers Recycle Into?
Since the Power Trip update, the recycler you use changes the yield. Average values for one silencer:
| Silencer | Red recycler (75%) | Green, powered (60%) | Green, unpowered (50%) | Safe zone (40%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Military Silencer | About 11 HQM | 9 HQM | About 7.5 HQM | 6 HQM |
| Oil Filter Silencer | About 7.5 HQM | 6 HQM | 5 HQM | 4 HQM |
| Soda Can Silencer | 30 Metal Fragments | 24 Metal Fragments | 20 Metal Fragments | 16 Metal Fragments |
None of them give scrap. Recycling a Military Silencer is a waste unless you already have a spare, since you cannot craft another one.
Rust Silencer History
- September 3, 2015 (Devblog 76): the silencer is added as one of the first weapon attachments.
- May 2016 (Devblog 110): durability goes up and the damage penalty is reduced slightly.
- October 13, 2016 (Devblog 131): silenced sound range cut to 40 metres (from 100), and silencers start hiding tracers.
- March 2017 (Devblog 153): the craft cost drops to 5 HQM.
- April 2019: explosive ammo now wears silencers down faster.
- December 2020 (Tech Tree update): faster craft time.
- July 7, 2022: the silencer’s accuracy bonus is removed.
- June 5, 2025 (“Nerfed, Buffed, Balanced?”): the silencer becomes the loot only Military Silencer, and the craftable Oil Filter and Soda Can silencers are added. Rust Console Edition got the new silencers in its 1.11 patch.
- July 2, 2026: a bug that stopped the Military Silencer spawning in loot is fixed.
Nothing about silencers changed in the September 2026 Breach and Clear update or the October 2026 Halloween patch. Our Rust update hub tracks every monthly patch.
Rust Silencer Tips
- Count your shots. A Soda Can Silencer is gone after about 12 AK rounds. Know that before you start a spray.
- Aim higher at range. A 25% to 35% slower bullet drops a lot more, so hold over on anything past 100 metres.
- Swap muzzles on the move. Run a silencer while you roam, then switch to a muzzle brake when a real fight starts.
- Do not use explosive ammo with a silencer. It chews through the silencer and the gun.
- Silencers do not hide footsteps. Reloads, footsteps and the sound of bullets hitting a wall can still give you away.
- Pick your fights. A silenced AK hits for 37.5, not 50, so a fully kitted player can out-damage you in a straight duel. Use the first shots to win the fight.
Everything you craft is wiped on force wipe. Check when the next Rust force wipe is before you sink HQM into a pile of silencers.
Rust Silencer FAQ
Can you craft a silencer in Rust?
Yes, two of them. The Soda Can Silencer crafts from 40 metal fragments at a Workbench 1, and the Oil Filter Silencer crafts from 10 high quality metal at a Workbench 2. Both research for 20 scrap. The Military Silencer cannot be crafted since June 2025.
Where do you find the Military Silencer in Rust?
The Military Silencer is loot only. It drops from elite crates and Underwater Lab elite crates at about 2%, PT boat dryboxes, patrol helicopter crates, heavy scientists at Oil Rig and Bradley, and large Christmas presents.
How much damage does a silencer take away in Rust?
The Military Silencer lowers damage and velocity by 25%. The Oil Filter Silencer lowers damage and velocity by 30%. The Soda Can Silencer lowers damage by 30% and velocity by 35%. An AK body shot drops from 50 to 37.5 or 35.
How many shots does a soda can silencer last?
A Soda Can Silencer lasts about 12 assault rifle shots with normal ammo, and an Oil Filter Silencer about 48. The Military Silencer lasts many magazines.
What guns can use a silencer in Rust?
Silencers fit the Assault Rifle, LR-300, M16A2, Semi-Auto Rifle, SKS, M39, Bolt Action, L96, M249, HMLMG, MP5A4, Thompson, Custom SMG, Handmade SMG, Semi-Auto Pistol, M15, M92, Revolver, Prototype 17, Pump Shotgun, Spas-12, M4 and Krieg shotguns. The Python, Double Barrel, Waterpipe, Eoka and Nailgun cannot take one.
Does a silencer hide you in Rust?
A silencer removes your muzzle flash and tracers and cuts how far your shots can be heard to about 40 metres. Players close by can still hear you, and footsteps and reloads are not hidden.
Does a silencer improve accuracy in Rust?
No. Facepunch removed the silencer’s accuracy bonus in July 2022. For less recoil use a muzzle brake or a lasersight instead.
What does a Military Silencer recycle into?
A Military Silencer recycles into about 9 high quality metal at a powered green recycler, about 11 at the red Power Plant recycler and 6 at a safe zone recycler. It gives no scrap.
