Rust Legacy: The Original 2013 Rust, History, Differences & Can You Still Play It (2026)

Rust Legacy guide, updated October 22, 2026

Rust Legacy is the original version of Rust. It came out on Steam Early Access on December 11, 2013, ran on an older Unity 4 engine, and was replaced in October 2014 when Facepunch’s rebuilt “Experimental” version became the main game. The old version was renamed Legacy, stopped getting new content, and was removed from Steam in December 2016. Today it only lives on through small fan servers and archives.

This guide covers what Rust Legacy was, its full history, how it differs from the Rust you play now, how crafting and the map worked, which Legacy items came back for the 10th anniversary, and whether you can still play it in 2026. If you play today’s Rust, the Rust force wipe countdown on our home page shows exactly when the next wipe lands.

TL;DR Rust Legacy is the 2013 to 2014 version of Rust. It had one fixed map, research kits, Kevlar armor and early zombies. Facepunch rebuilt the game from scratch in 2014, the rebuild became the default in October 2014, and Legacy was pulled from Steam in December 2016. There is no official way to play it now. A few fan-run servers still use the last client (v1069), but they are small and unofficial. Its spirit lives on in today’s Rust through the Legacy Wood Shelter and M4 Shotgun from the 10th anniversary in December 2023, plus a handful of Legacy skins.

What Is Rust Legacy?

When veterans say “back in Legacy”, they mean the first Rust that Facepunch sold on Steam. Garry Newman’s studio started Rust as a prototype in 2013, first as a web browser alpha and then as a Steam Early Access game. That build used Unity 4 and a lot of code that was never meant to last.

By 2014 Facepunch decided the prototype could not carry the game forward, so they started again. The new version was called Rust Experimental. Once it was good enough, it replaced the original as the default game on Steam, and the old code was given a new name: Rust Legacy. Every update since then, from the tech tree to boats and livestock, was built on the rebuild, not on Legacy. Our Rust release date and history guide covers the full story of both versions.

  • Legacy = the original game, 2013 to 2014, with its own map, items and building system.
  • Experimental = the rebuild, which simply became “Rust” once Legacy was retired.
  • “Legacy” in today’s game usually means the Legacy-themed items and skins added in 2023, not the old game itself.

Legacy’s last big content update came in 2014. After the switch, Facepunch kept it on Steam as a separate option for players who were not ready to move, but almost everyone did move, and cheating on the remaining servers made it worse. Community counts in late 2016 put real players at around 200 at peak. In December 2016 Facepunch pulled it for good.

Good to know Hapis Island is often called a “Legacy map”, but it was made for the rebuilt game in 2015, not for Rust Legacy. It returned to official servers with the June 2022 update and Facepunch retired it for good in February 2023. Today it lives on as community custom maps, see our Hapis Island guide.

Rust Legacy vs Rust Today

Rust Legacy vs modern Rust: Legacy from 2013 to 2014 had one fixed map on every server, research kits and blueprints, straighter bullets with light recoil and no new content since 2014; Rust today has procedural maps wiped often, the tech tree and research table, monthly updates since 2014 and recoil patterns to learn
Legacy and modern Rust share the idea, not the code.

The biggest difference players remember is the gunplay. Legacy bullets flew in fairly straight lines with very little recoil, so fights were fast and hit-scan-like. Weapons were modelled on real military guns like the M4, MP5A4 and P250, while the rebuild leaned into the homemade, scrap-built look Rust is known for now.

How Crafting and Raiding Worked in Rust Legacy

Rust Legacy crafting recipes shown with today's item icons: Explosive Charge from 15 explosives, 1 flare and 5 leather with explosives from airdrops, Research Kit from 20 low quality metal and 20 leather used at a workbench to learn items, MP5A4 full-auto 9mm SMG from 20 low quality metal, and airdrops that dropped the best loot like C4 and guns
Legacy recipes, shown with today’s item icons.

Legacy had no workbench tiers and no tech tree. You learned items by finding blueprints in crates or by using a Research Kit on an item you already owned, near a workbench. Raiding was tied to airdrops, because the explosives you needed for C4 only came from supply planes.

  • Explosive Charge (Legacy C4): 15 explosives, 1 flare and 5 leather, and you had to research it first.
  • Research Kit: 20 Low Quality Metal and 20 leather. Low Quality Metal was the old refined metal, worth 15 metal fragments each.
  • MP5A4: a fully automatic 9mm SMG for 20 Low Quality Metal (300 metal fragments). The name lives on in today’s MP5A4.
  • Kevlar armor: helmet, vest, pants and boots, the top armor set before today’s metal and heavy plate.
  • Airdrops: planes dropped crates full of weapons and explosives, which made them the main event on every server. Today’s version is covered in our Rust airdrop guide.
Heads up Legacy recipes changed a lot between 2013 and 2014 patches, and most of what survives comes from old community wikis. Treat exact numbers as a snapshot of the late Legacy builds, not one fixed set.

The Rust Legacy Map

The Rust Legacy map was one hand-made island on every server with Big Rad Town, Small Rad Town, Rad Factory, the Hangar, Resource Road and Hacker Valley, compared with today's Rust where a new procedural map is generated every wipe
Every Legacy server ran the same island.

Every Legacy server used the same hand-made island, so players learned it by heart. Locations people still name today include Big Rad Town, Small Rad Town, the Rad Factory, the Hangar, Resource Road and Hacker Valley, plus a scatter of small towns. The radtowns were the loot hubs, much like the monuments in today’s game.

Modern Rust swapped that for a procedural map generated from a seed and size, which is why every wipe feels different. It also means wipes matter more than ever, since a fresh map comes with every force wipe. Check the next Rust force wipe date before you plan your next fresh start.

Legacy Items and Skins in Rust Today

Legacy items in Rust today: Legacy Wood Shelter for 600 wood known by default, Legacy Furnace skin given free in December 2023 for 3 hours played, Legacy Bow hunting bow skin from the limited item store, Legacy High External Wall and Gate skins from the 9.99 dollar July 2025 pack, and the M4 Shotgun that arrived with the 10th anniversary
Legacy items and skins you can still use in modern Rust.

For Rust’s 10th anniversary in December 2023, Facepunch added a set of items that point straight back to Legacy, and in July 2025 a paid Legacy Wood skin pack for high walls and gates followed. You can use all of them on any normal server today.

ItemWhat it isHow you get it
Legacy Wood ShelterA 1×1 wooden hut with a door and lock, like Legacy’s starter shelter600 wood, no workbench, blueprint known by default
Legacy FurnaceSkin for the furnace in the old styleGiven free to players who played 3 hours in December 2023, same recipe as the furnace
Legacy BowSkin for the hunting bowLimited item store skin, same stats as the hunting bow
Legacy High External Wall and GateWood-tier skins for high external walls and gatesLegacy Wood Gate and Wall Pack, $9.99, released July 2025; same costs as the wooden versions
M4 ShotgunSemi-auto shotgun added with the anniversary updateLoot only, see our M4 Shotgun guide
Fresh spawn tip The Legacy Wood Shelter is one of the best first-hour items in modern Rust. It costs only 600 wood, needs no workbench and gives you a locked 1×1 to hide loot in before you place a real base.

Can You Still Play Rust Legacy in 2026?

Playing Rust Legacy in 2026: no Steam play button since December 2016, fan archives host the v1069 client, a handful of community servers still run, player counts are often single digits, files are unofficial so scan them before running, and there is no anti-cheat help, so our pick is to play today's Rust and catch a fresh wipe
Legacy only survives through fan projects.

Not officially. Since December 2016 there is no Rust Legacy button in Steam, and owning Rust does not give you access to it. The game also does not work out of the box any more, because the official backend it relied on is gone.

What is left is run by fans. Community archives keep copies of the last Legacy client, v1069, and a handful of fan servers run it with their own launchers. Some fan projects are even working on new Legacy servers. If you try one, keep these in mind:

  • It is unofficial. Facepunch does not support any of it, and the files come from third parties. Scan everything before you run it.
  • Populations are tiny. Server lists often show single-digit player counts outside peak times.
  • Cheat protection is weak. Without modern anti-cheat, cheaters were a problem even in 2014.
  • It is a time capsule. No boats, no electricity, no tech tree, no new content, ever.

If you want that early-wipe, everyone-is-equal feeling, the closest thing today is joining a server right after a wipe. Our Rust server types guide explains vanilla, modded, softcore and hardcore servers, and our list of games like Rust covers other survival games if you want something new. The Rust force wipe tracker on our home page tells you when the next fresh map goes live.

Rust Legacy FAQ

What is Rust Legacy?

Rust Legacy is the original version of Rust that launched on Steam Early Access on December 11, 2013. It ran on Unity 4 and was replaced in October 2014 by Facepunch’s rebuilt version, which is the Rust people play today.

When was Rust Legacy removed?

Rust Legacy was removed from Steam in December 2016. It had already stopped getting new content in 2014, and only a few hundred people were still playing it.

Can you still play Rust Legacy?

Not through Steam or Facepunch. A few fan-run servers still use the last Legacy client, v1069, through community archives and launchers, but they are unofficial, small and unsupported.

Why did Facepunch replace Rust Legacy?

The original code was a prototype that could not support the features Facepunch wanted. They rebuilt the game from scratch as Rust Experimental, made it the default in October 2014, and renamed the original Rust Legacy.

Did Rust Legacy have zombies?

Yes, early Legacy builds had zombies that dropped loot. They were removed in early 2014 and replaced with wild animals like wolves and bears.

Is Hapis Island from Rust Legacy?

No. Hapis Island was made for the rebuilt version of Rust in 2015 and was retired by Facepunch in February 2023. Rust Legacy used its own hand-made island with Big Rad Town, Small Rad Town, the Hangar, Resource Road and Hacker Valley.

What is the Legacy Wood Shelter in Rust?

It is a 1×1 wooden hut with a door and lock, added for the 10th anniversary in December 2023 as a nod to Legacy. It costs 600 wood, needs no workbench, and every player knows the blueprint by default.

Is Rust Legacy free?

There is nothing to buy, because Rust Legacy is no longer sold. Fan servers that run it are free, but they are not official, so only download files from sources you trust and scan them first.
