The Legacy Wood Shelter is the little wooden shack every fresh spawn in Rust can build from the first minute of a wipe. It costs nothing but wood, needs no workbench, and comes with its own door, key lock and a small patch of building privilege. Facepunch added it in the 10 Years of Rust update in December 2023 as a tribute to the starter hut from Rust Legacy.
This Rust Legacy Shelter guide covers the craft cost, how to place it, the one-shelter limit, how decay and upkeep work, how much it takes to raid one, what you get back from a recycler, and when it beats building a real 1×1.

What Is the Legacy Wood Shelter in Rust?
The Legacy Wood Shelter (shortname legacy.shelter.wood) is a deployable wooden hut. You craft it like any item, hold it, and place it on the ground in one go. There are no foundations, walls or roof to build piece by piece. The game calls it “the classic s*** shack” and “a great starter base for any fresh spawn”, which is exactly what it is.
In the original 2013 Rust, players started out in a tiny wood shelter before they could afford a real house. When Facepunch celebrated 10 years of Rust in December 2023, they brought that hut back. In their words, “the shelter comes with an included door, key lock and even a small radius of building privilege”. It shipped in the same update as the M4 Shotgun and a set of Legacy skins.
Think of it as a safe pocket for your first hour. You can stash your first sleeping bag, a wooden box and your early loot inside, lock it, and log off without everything being stolen in minutes.

How to Craft and Place a Legacy Shelter
- Farm 600 wood. That is roughly six or seven trees with a rock, or three or four with a stone hatchet. A wood wall costs 200 wood, so the shelter is the price of three.
- Open the crafting menu. The shelter is under Construction. Every player has the blueprint from the start of the wipe, so it is never greyed out for lack of research.
- Craft it. It takes about 15 seconds and you do not need to stand near a workbench.
- Put it in your hotbar and place it. Aim at fairly flat ground and click when the outline turns blue. You cannot place it in a safe zone such as Outpost or Bandit Camp, on a boat, or inside someone else’s building privilege.
- Lock up. The wooden door already has a key lock, and you get the key. Keep the key on you or in a safe spot, because anyone holding it can open the door.
Building Privilege and the One-Shelter Limit
The shelter carries its own small building privilege radius. Players who did not place it cannot build right up against it, so nobody can wall you in with twig the moment you log off. It is a tiny bubble, though. It does not protect a whole compound the way a tool cupboard does, and it does not stop people from building a little further away.
You can only have one shelter deployed at any time. If you already have one on the map, you cannot place a second until the first is destroyed or decays. That keeps people from carpeting the map with 600 wood huts.
Placement follows the normal building rules: you need to be allowed to build where you stand, so you cannot drop one inside another player’s cupboard range, and safe zones and boats are off limits.
Legacy Shelter Decay and Upkeep
The shelter does not need a cupboard full of wood to stay up. Instead, it stays alive as long as the door gets used. Facepunch put it simply: “shelters will decay naturally, provided the door isn’t interacted with”. Open or close the door at least once a day and it keeps standing.
If nobody touches the door, the shelter starts to rot like any wooden piece and loses its health over about six hours. Players who log off for a weekend should not expect it to be there on Monday. Our Rust decay guide explains how decay works for every building tier.
Place the shelter inside the range of a tool cupboard and it switches to the normal system: it pays TC upkeep in wood like your other wood pieces, and it stays up as long as the cupboard is stocked. That is handy if you build a real base later and want to keep the shelter as an outbuilding.
Damaged shelters can be fixed with a hammer or a Salvaged Hammer, the same as any deployable. A full repair from almost nothing costs about 300 wood, half the craft price.
How to Raid a Legacy Wood Shelter
With 500 HP, the shelter is one of the cheapest raids in the game. Item wikis list these counts to destroy it:
| Raid tool | Amount to destroy | Sulfur |
|---|---|---|
| Timed Explosive Charge (C4) | 1 | 2,200 |
| Rocket | 1 | 1,400 |
| Satchel Charge | 2 (some charts say 3) | 960 to 1,440 |
| Beancan Grenade | About 5 | About 600 |
| Hatchets and melee | Works, but slow (several minutes) | 0 |
A full C4 or rocket is overkill. Most raiders open shelters with two satchels or a stack of beancans, or simply chop through with a few hatchets if nobody is home. Fire from molotovs damages it too, but the numbers vary between sources, so do not count on fire alone. Our raid calculator and raid chart list every other wall and door.
Legacy Shelter vs a Wood 1×1 Base
| Legacy Wood Shelter | Wood 1×1 with TC | |
|---|---|---|
| Wood cost | 600 | About 2,700 (pieces, door, lock and cupboard) |
| Build time | One click | Several minutes with a building plan and hammer |
| Door and lock | Included | Crafted separately |
| Building privilege | Tiny radius | Full TC radius |
| Upgrade to stone or metal | No | Yes |
| Expand it | No | Yes |
| Stays up while offline | Only if the door was used that day | As long as the TC has upkeep |
The shelter wins for the first 20 minutes of a wipe and for quick forward stashes. A real 1×1 wins as soon as you want to keep anything overnight. Our Rust base designs and base builder show the next step up.
Legacy Wood Shelter Recycling
| Recycler | Wood back |
|---|---|
| Power Plant recycler (75%) | 450 |
| Powered monument recycler (60%) | 360 |
| Unpowered monument recycler (50%) | 300 |
| Safe zone recycler (40%) | 240 |
The shelter gives no scrap, so recycling one only makes sense if you crafted a spare by mistake. Our recycler guide explains the four rates.

Legacy Shelter Tips
- Drop it in the first minutes of a wipe. As soon as you have 600 wood, place it, put a sleeping bag inside and you have a safe respawn point. Check our force wipe countdown so you are online for the start.
- Hide it. Tuck it between trees or rocks, away from roads and monuments. Most shelters die because someone walks past with a hatchet.
- Use it as a forward stash. Near a monument or a farm spot, it is a cheap place to drop loot before you run home.
- Open the door every day, or put it inside your cupboard range so upkeep covers it.
- Do not store your best loot in it once raiding starts. Move up to a stone base with a Workbench 1 and a tool cupboard.
Legacy Wood Shelter FAQ
How much wood is the Legacy Shelter in Rust?
The Legacy Wood Shelter costs 600 wood. It needs no workbench, every player knows the blueprint by default, and it takes about 15 seconds to craft.
Do you need a tool cupboard for the Legacy Wood Shelter?
No. The shelter has its own small building privilege radius and stays up as long as the door is used at least once a day. If you place it inside a tool cupboard’s range, it pays normal TC upkeep instead.
How many Legacy Shelters can you have in Rust?
One. You can only have one Legacy Wood Shelter deployed at any time. You have to lose the first one before you can place another.
How much HP does the Legacy Wood Shelter have?
It has 500 HP. One C4 or one rocket destroys it, about 2 satchel charges or 5 beancan grenades also work, and hatchets can chop it down in a few minutes.
Does the Legacy Wood Shelter decay?
Yes, if nobody uses the door. Open or close the door at least once a day to stop decay. An untouched shelter outside a cupboard range rots away over about six hours once decay starts.
Does the Legacy Wood Shelter come with a lock?
Yes. It comes with a wooden door and a key lock already fitted, and you get the key when you place it. Anyone holding the key can open the door, so keep it safe.
Can you upgrade the Legacy Wood Shelter to stone?
No. It is a single deployable, not a set of building blocks, so it cannot be upgraded or expanded. Build a normal 1×1 with a building plan and a hammer when you want stone walls.
When was the Legacy Wood Shelter added to Rust?
It was added in December 2023 in the 10 Years of Rust update, as a tribute to the starter shelter from Rust Legacy in 2013.
