High Quality Bag in Rust: Recipe, Price, Odds & Is It Worth It? (2026)

Rust skins guide, October 2026

The High Quality Bag in Rust is a Steam inventory item, not an in-game item. You open it from Rust’s inventory screen and it gives you one random clothing or armour skin. You can craft it from 70 cloth, 5 wood and 1 metal (Steam materials you get by breaking down old skins), or buy it on the Steam Community Market, where it cost $10.70 on October 28, 2026.

Is it worth opening? We priced all 1,732 clothing and armour skins listed on the Steam Market on October 28, 2026 to find out. The short answer is no, unless you enjoy the gamble: the typical skin you get is worth about $1.69, and only about 1 in 15 is worth more than the bag. Below you will find the recipe, the craft vs buy math, the real payout spread, the jackpot skins, how it compares to Rust’s other skin containers, and how to open one. New to skins? TL;DR The High Quality Bag is Rust’s clothing skin container. Recipe: 70 cloth + 5 wood + 1 metal in the Steam inventory. Steam price: $10.70 (Oct 28, 2026), which is $1.35 cheaper than buying the materials ($12.05). It drops one random clothing or armour skin. Facepunch never published odds; if every skin is equally likely, 93% of pulls are worth less than the bag, the median pull is about $1.69, and the jackpots are the Zipper Face ($1,680), Big Grin ($1,130) and Creepy Clown Bandana ($885).

What Is the High Quality Bag in Rust?

It is one of Rust’s four skin containers, Steam items that turn into a random skin when you open them. Facepunch’s own item description on Steam says: “Bags contain clothes. This is a high quality bag, which means the clothes in this bag are higher quality than in the low quality bag.”

A few things trip people up:

  • It is not an in-game item. You will never loot one from a crate or barrel on a server. It lives in your Steam inventory, next to your skins.
  • It is not a sleeping bag or backpack. The name only means “a bag of clothes”. If you want the in-game respawn point, see our Rust sleeping bag guide.
  • Its cloth is not in-game cloth. The 70 cloth in the recipe is a Steam material made by breaking down skins, not the cloth you farm from hemp.
  • It holds clothing and armour only. Gun and tool skins come from the Weapon Barrel, and door or box skins from the High Quality Crate.

The skin system that created these containers arrived in November 2016, when Facepunch let players break skins down into cloth and craft bags from it. The High Quality Bag was added a few days later at 100 cloth; the recipe has since dropped to 70.

Wood5$0.18$0.90Breaking down deployable skins
Metal1$0.65$0.65Breaking down weapon skins

You craft it in Rust’s Steam inventory screen (from the main menu), not at a workbench. The craft is instant and the bag lands in your Steam inventory. Some item sites show the usual “craft the base item at a workbench” text on the bag’s page; that text is generic and does not apply here.

How to Get Cloth, Wood and Metal

There are two ways:

  1. Break down skins you don’t want. In Rust’s inventory screen you can break a skin into the material that matches its type: clothing gives cloth, weapons give metal, and deployables give wood. Cheap skins usually give just 1, so a full bag needs a lot of junk skins. Breaking is permanent: the skin is gone and you only keep the material.
  2. Buy them on the Steam Market. Cloth, Wood and Metal are tradable Steam items. Cloth sat at $0.15 on October 28, 2026, with about 31,000 for sale.
Before you break anything: check what the skin sells for first with our Rust inventory value guide. Any skin worth more than about $0.15 is worth more sold than broken into one cloth.

Craft or Buy? The Real Cost

Craft or buy a Rust High Quality Bag: buying 70 cloth, 5 wood and 1 metal costs 12.05 dollars, buying the finished bag costs 10.70 dollars, and selling a bag you own leaves you 9.31 dollars after Steam fees
Buying the finished bag is cheaper than buying its materials. Lowest Steam Market listings, October 28, 2026.

This is the part most guides get wrong. On October 28, 2026 the finished bag cost $10.70 on the Steam Market, while its materials cost $12.05. So if you are paying cash, buy the bag, don’t craft it. Crafting only makes sense when the cloth comes from junk skins you already own and could not sell for more than a few cents each.

The bag is a commodity on Steam, so every copy is identical and you just buy the cheapest one. About 790 were for sale and about 120 sold in the previous 24 hours. If you sell one at $10.70, you keep $9.31 after Steam’s fees.

High Quality Bag Odds and What You Actually Get

Facepunch has never published drop odds for any Rust skin container. Community testers report no rarity tiers like CS2 cases have, so the common assumption is that every skin in the pool is equally likely. The pool is large: any marketable clothing or armour skin, except the cheaper skins reserved for the Low Quality Bag and DLC-only clothing, with new Item Store skins joining over time.

So we priced the pool ourselves. On October 28, 2026 there were 1,732 clothing and armour skins (Twitch drops excluded) with a Steam Market listing. Here is how their lowest Steam prices break down:

What a Rust High Quality Bag pays out: of 1,732 clothing and armour skins on Steam, 27.6 percent are under 1 dollar, 29.8 percent 1 to 2 dollars, 26.2 percent 2 to 5 dollars, 9.6 percent 5 to 10.70 dollars and only 6.8 percent worth 10.70 or more, with a median skin price of 1.69 dollars

Under $147827.6%
$1 to $251729.8%
$2 to $545426.2%
$5 to $10.701669.6%
$10.70 or more (beats the bag)1176.8%
$100 or more60.3%

What that means in plain numbers:

  • The median pull is worth about $1.69, so a typical opening loses around $9.
  • The average pull is about $6.54, but that is pulled up by four skins worth $500 or more. Leave out the top 1% and the average falls to about $3.32.
  • Only 117 of 1,732 skins (about 1 in 15) are worth more than the bag, and only 6 are worth $100 or more.
Real talk: treat the bag like a lottery ticket. Over many openings you should expect to get back roughly 50 to 60 cents on the dollar at best (less after fees), and far less in a typical run. If you are 18+ and choose to gamble on it, only spend what you are happy to lose.

High Quality Bag vs Weapon Barrel vs High Quality Crate

Rust's four skin containers with their real Steam icons: High Quality Bag for clothing and armour at 10.70 dollars crafted from 70 cloth, 5 wood and 1 metal; Weapon Barrel for weapon and tool skins at 8.08 from 10 metal, 5 cloth and 5 wood; High Quality Crate for deployables at 2.60 from 10 wood and 5 cloth; Low Quality Bag for cheaper clothing at 1.58 from 10 cloth and 1 wood

High Quality CrateDeployable skins (doors, boxes, bags)10 wood, 5 cloth$2.60
Low Quality BagCheaper clothing skins10 cloth, 1 wood$1.58

The High Quality Bag is the most expensive container, and the only one that can drop Rust’s famous facemasks. If you mainly want gun skins, it is the wrong container entirely; that is the Weapon Barrel’s job.

How to Craft and Open a High Quality Bag

  1. Get the bag. Buy it on the Steam Community Market, trade for it, or collect 70 cloth, 5 wood and 1 metal and craft it in Rust’s Steam inventory screen.
  2. Open Rust’s inventory from the main menu (not the in-game inventory on a server).
  3. Select the bag and open it. No key is needed, unlike CS2 cases. The bag is used up and one skin appears in your Steam inventory.
  4. Use or sell the skin. Apply it in game like any other skin, or sell it; to see where you get the best price, check our Rust skin trading sites comparison.

Is the High Quality Bag Worth It?

For money, no. At $10.70 a bag and a $1.69 median pull, you lose money on about 93 of every 100 openings. For fun, maybe, if you are 18+, treat it as entertainment and set a hard limit.

Rust High Quality Bag tips over a real in-game shop: buy the bag instead of crafting it, buy the skin you want outright, only break junk skins, sell on skin sites to dodge Steam fees, use the Weapon Barrel for gun skins and skip the Low Quality Bag
Six ways to avoid losing money on Rust’s clothing bag.
  • Want a specific skin? Buy it. Our where to buy Rust skins guide shows where it is cheapest.
  • Buy the bag, don’t buy materials. The finished bag is $1.35 cheaper than its cloth, wood and metal.
  • Only break true junk. A skin that sells for $0.30 is worth two cloth on the market, not one.
  • Watch the Item Store. New clothing skins go on sale every week in the Rust Item Store, and many drop below their store price within weeks.
  • Free skins exist. Rust Twitch drops cost nothing.

Skins never change how you play: a Big Grin protects exactly like a plain Metal Facemask. What decides your next wipe is your gear and timing, so check when the next Rust force wipe is before you spend your skin budget.
