Rust Sleeping Bag: Cost, Cooldown, Bag Limit & Bed vs Bag (2026)

Rust base building guide, 2026

The sleeping bag is the most important cheap item in Rust. It gives you a place to respawn, so dying no longer sends you back to a random beach with nothing. It costs a handful of cloth, needs no workbench and every player knows the blueprint from the start of a wipe.

This Rust sleeping bag guide covers the craft cost, how the respawn cooldown and the 50 metre shared radius work, the 15 bag limit, how to give a bag to a friend, the bed and beach towel, where to place your bags and how to destroy enemy ones.

TL;DR A Sleeping Bag costs 30 cloth, needs no workbench and is a default blueprint. After you place it or respawn on it, it has a 5 minute cooldown, and respawning resets the timer on your other bags and beds within 50 metres. Each player can have 15 bags and beds in total. A Bed has a shorter 2 minute cooldown but costs 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits at a Workbench 1. One molotov or about 14 seconds with a hatchet destroys a bag.

Sleeping Bag Cost in Rust

The sleeping bag crafts straight from your inventory, so it is usually the first thing you make after a stone hatchet and pickaxe.

Rust sleeping bag craft cost: hemp gives cloth, 30 cloth makes a sleeping bag with no workbench, 30 second craft, default blueprint, stack size 1, recycles into 18 cloth or 12 at a safe zone recycler, despawns after 20 minutes on the ground
30 cloth and no workbench.

Cloth comes from picking hemp plants, which give 10 cloth each, and from skinning animals. Three hemp plants are enough for a bag. Because the blueprint is free, there is no research table or tech tree step at all. See the Rust blueprints guide for the other default items.

Sleeping Bag Respawn Cooldown

A sleeping bag cannot be used again straight away. After you place it, and every time you respawn on it, it goes on a cooldown of about 5 minutes. The death screen shows the time left next to each bag.

Rust sleeping bag respawn cooldown: a sleeping bag has a 5 minute cooldown after placing or using it, a bed has a 2 minute cooldown, and all your bags and beds within 50 metres reset together
5 minutes per bag, shared across 50 metres.
  • Shared radius: when you respawn on a bag, every bag and bed you own within about 50 metres also goes on cooldown. Ten bags in one room do not give you ten quick respawns.
  • Placement preview: when you place a new bag, the preview tells you if it is outside the cooldown circle of your other bags, and the map shows a circle around each one.
  • Beds are faster: a bed has about a 2 minute cooldown, which is why your main respawn in base should be a bed once you have a Workbench 1. See our Rust bed guide.
  • Server settings: modded servers can change the timers and the radius, so check the server info if the numbers feel different.

Sleeping Bag Limit

Each player can have up to 15 respawn points at once on official servers. Bags, beds and beach towels all count towards that number, and so do bags other players have assigned to you. Facepunch added the cap in June 2023 because the newer death screen made it too easy to manage dozens of bags and spawn straight back into fights.

Rust sleeping bag limit and giving bags: place a bag, hold E to open the menu, assign it to a teammate or friend, and keep in mind each player has a maximum of 15 bags and beds; bag gifting can be turned off in the options menu
15 bags and beds per player, gifted ones included.

When you hit the limit you cannot place another bag until you remove one. The easiest way is to pick it up, break it, or let a teammate take over the spot. Missions have their own respawn rules and do not use up a bag slot, see Rust missions.

How to Give a Sleeping Bag to a Friend

  1. Place the bag where your friend needs to spawn.
  2. Look at it and hold E to open its menu.
  3. Choose the assign option, then pick your teammate or friend from the list.

The bag then belongs to them and counts towards their 15. The same menu lets you rename a bag, which makes it much easier to pick the right one on the death screen. If you do not want strangers dropping bags on you, turn off bag gifting in the game’s options menu.

Watch out: a bag in your base that you assigned to someone else stays theirs. If you fall out with a teammate, break or pick up the bags you gave them before they use one to get inside.

Sleeping Bag vs Bed vs Beach Towel

Sleeping bag vs bed vs beach towel in Rust: sleeping bag costs 30 cloth with no workbench and a 5 minute cooldown; bed costs 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits at Workbench 1 with a 2 minute cooldown and must be placed inside; beach towel costs 30 cloth and works like a sleeping bag

Use sleeping bags for cheap respawns around the map and a bed for your main spawn inside base, where the shorter cooldown matters most during a raid defence. The beach towel is a sleeping bag with a different look. Rooms at the Apartment Complex come with a bed already in them.

Where to Put Sleeping Bags

Where to put sleeping bags in Rust: inside your base core behind doors, at hidden stash spots near loot and monuments, and raid bags outside the 50 metre cooldown circle of your other bags
One in base, a few around the map.
  • Inside your base: put it deep in the core behind at least one door, next to your tool cupboard. A bag next to a window can be burned from outside.
  • Around the map: hide a few bags near the monuments you farm, such as near Outpost or a recycler, so a death does not cost you a long run.
  • Raid bags: before a raid, drop a bag or two near the target but outside the 50 metre circle of your other bags, so each one has its own timer.
  • Placement rules: a bag needs a flat spot without rocks or furniture in the way. Inside a building you need tool cupboard access to place it.

A sleeping bag is not part of the building, so it adds nothing to your upkeep. For laying out the rest of the base, see the Rust building guide.

How to Destroy a Sleeping Bag

How to destroy a sleeping bag in Rust: 1 molotov, about 14 seconds with a hatchet, about 7 seconds with a salvaged hammer, 5 fire arrows, 4 F1 grenades or 1 satchel charge
Bags burn, so fire is the cheap answer.
ToolAmountNote
Molotov Cocktail1No sulfur, about 18 seconds of burning
Fire arrows5Hunting bow, crossbow or compound bow
Hatchet1About 14 seconds of hits
Salvaged Hammer1About 7 seconds of hits
Chainsaw1About 6 seconds
F1 Grenade4240 sulfur
Beancan Grenade4480 sulfur
Satchel Charge1480 sulfur, overkill
Assault Rifle40 bulletsRegular 5.56 ammo

These numbers are twice what a rug takes, which is where the estimate of about 200 HP comes from. Breaking enemy bags inside a base you just raided stops the owners from spawning back in, so do it first.

Rust Sleeping Bag Tips

Rust sleeping bag tips: carry a spare bag, upgrade to a bed at home, spread bags more than 50 metres apart, keep bags behind doors, clear enemy bags with a hatchet or hammer and watch the 15 bag limit
Small habits that save a wipe.
  1. Carry a spare. At 30 cloth, a bag in your inventory lets you set a new spawn wherever you end up.
  2. Upgrade to a bed. Once you have a Workbench 1, a bed halves your wait at home.
  3. Spread past 50 metres. Bags close together share one timer, so space them out.
  4. Bag behind doors. Never leave your only bag where a raider can reach it through a window or a wooden door.
  5. Clear enemy bags. A hatchet or salvaged hammer removes bags near your base for free.
  6. Rename your bags. Names like “base” or “outpost” save seconds on the death screen.
