Rust Cloth: How to Get It, Farm It & What It Builds

Resource guide, updated 2026

Cloth is the first resource that matters in Rust. Before you own a gun, before you build a wall, you need Cloth. It makes your first bandage so a bleed does not kill you, your first bow so you can hunt back, a sleeping bag so death is not a full reset, and every scrap of clothing on your back. No other early resource is stitched into so much of a fresh spawn’s life.

Here is the catch that trips up new players: you cannot craft Cloth. It has no recipe. You gather it, and only gather it, from hemp plants, animal corpses, cactus and the recycler. Knowing which of those to lean on at each stage of a wipe is the whole game. On hour one you punch hemp bushes. By day three you are recycling road junk. Once you are settled, a hemp farm quietly prints thousands of Cloth an hour while you do other things.

This guide covers all of it: what Cloth is, its exact item data, every source with real numbers, the animal yield chart, how much you get from recycling, how to build a hemp farm and chase the best genetics, the full list of what Cloth crafts, and the fastest route at each point in the wipe. Every figure is cross checked against the Facepunch wiki, RustHelp and Corrosion Hour.

TL;DR Cloth is a base resource you gather, never craft. Get it from hemp plants (~10 Cloth + 1 seed each), animal corpses (50 from a bear, 70 from a tiger), cactus (10 to 15 each), and by recycling tarp, rope, gloves and old clothes. It stacks to 1,000 and despawns in 20 minutes on the ground. Cloth builds your bandage (4), sleeping bag (30), burlap clothing (20), hunting bow (50), low grade fuel, sewing kits, beds, real armor and even C4. Early wipe, punch hemp and skin animals. Mid wipe, recycle road junk for 300 to 500 at a time. Settled, run a hemp farm with GGGYYY seeds for thousands per hour.

What Is Cloth in Rust?

Cloth is a raw base resource, the same tier as wood, stone and metal fragments. The game’s own item description sums it up: “Cloth from an animal or a Hemp Bush. Used in many clothing items, weapons, and more.” That “and more” is doing a lot of work, because Cloth appears in over two hundred recipes across every tier of the game.

The single most important fact about Rust Cloth is that it is gather only. It is not craftable, not researchable, and it will not go through a recycler to be made from something else. If you open your crafting menu looking for a Cloth recipe, you will not find one, and that is by design. Every point of Cloth you ever own came off a plant, an animal, a cactus, or out of a recycler that was fed finished items.

That makes Cloth a soft bottleneck early on. Wood and stone are everywhere and metal comes from nodes, but Cloth forces you to actually hunt or farm for it. A fresh spawn who ignores hemp bushes will be short a sleeping bag and a bow when it matters most, while the player who grabs every bush on the way inland is already stitching up clothing by the time they reach a monument.

Anyone telling you to “craft cloth” is wrong. Every point of it is gathered from the world. Once that clicks, the whole resource makes sense: your job is to gather efficiently, not to manufacture.

How to Get Cloth in Rust

There are four reliable ways to get Cloth in Rust, and the best one depends entirely on where you are in the wipe. Here they are side by side, then we break down the two big ones, hemp and recycling, in their own sections.

Rust Cloth sources overview with four cards, hemp plants give about 10 cloth plus a seed per plant and are the farmable source, animal corpses give 50 from a bear and 70 from a tiger, cactus gives 10 to 15 cloth each with a hatchet, and recycling tarp rope gloves and old clothes returns stacks of cloth
The four Cloth sources, ranked by how they fit into a wipe.
SourceYieldBest for
Hemp plantsFarmable~10 Cloth + 1 seed eachRenewable, free, scales into a farm
Animal corpses6 to 70 Cloth per animalPassive Cloth while you hunt for meat
Cactus10 to 15 Cloth eachDesert runs, needs a cutting tool
Recycling junk12 to 60 Cloth per item300 to 500 Cloth on a single road loop

Hemp and recycling are the two you will actually build your wipe around. Animals are a bonus you pick up while hunting for meat and fat anyway, and cactus is situational unless you spawn in the desert. Everything below is really about doing hemp and recycling well.

Hemp: Wild Picking vs a Hemp Farm

Hemp is the heart of Cloth farming in Rust. It is the only renewable source, which means it is the only one that scales. Wild hemp gets you started for free, and a planter farm turns Cloth from a chore into a background process.

Rust hemp guide comparing wild hemp, green star-leaf bushes near rivers giving about 10 cloth and 1 seed per plant with no tool, against a hemp farm in a Large Planter Box that ripens in 40 to 60 minutes and pushes thousands of cloth an hour, plus a genetics note to chase the GGGYYY strain by reading genes, cloning and crossbreeding
Wild hemp gets you started; a planter farm scales Cloth to thousands an hour.

Wild hemp

Wild hemp grows as small green bushes with a distinctive star leaf pattern, most often near rivers and in grassy forest and beach zones. You harvest it by walking up and holding E, no tool required. A fully grown plant gives roughly 10 Cloth and 1 Hemp Seed, though smaller plants can drop as little as 2 to 5 depending on how far they have grown. Grab every bush you pass on your run inland and you will have a stack of Cloth before you reach your first monument, plus the seeds that start your farm.

The hemp farm

Once you have a base and a few seeds, a farm is the endgame Cloth answer. Plant Hemp Seeds in a Large Planter Box, which holds the most plants and the most water. Outdoors, sun and rain do most of the work; indoors you must supply a water source and ceiling lights. With decent Growth genes and steady water, hemp is ripe in roughly 40 to 60 minutes, so you clear about one full harvest per planter every hour. A tuned three by three room of large planters pushes out thousands of Cloth an hour, hands free, with zero risk of being killed on a road.

Genetics: chase GGGYYY Every hemp plant carries six genes, and only two matter for Cloth. G is growth speed and Y is yield. The dream strain is GGGYYY: plants that grow fast and drop the most Cloth. Read a plant’s genes with a Genetic Analyzer, keep clones of your best plants, and crossbreed by planting strong genes next to weaker ones so the weak slots get overwritten over a few generations. Converge on GGGYYY and your seeds will out-yield anything you dig up wild by a wide margin.

Animal Cloth Yields

Every animal in Rust drops Cloth when you harvest its corpse, so hunting doubles as a Cloth run. You need a cutting tool to get the full amount: a Bone Knife is the best harvest tool in the early game and pulls more Cloth and meat from a body than a rock or a hatchet. Here is what each animal is worth.

Rust animal cloth yield table showing a tiger drops 70 cloth, bears polar bears and panthers 50, wolf 35, crocodile 30, stag and horse 25, shark 20, boar 10, chicken 6 and scientists 5, with a note that a Bone Knife harvests the most cloth from a corpse

AnimalClothNotes
Tiger70The single best Cloth animal
Bear / Polar Bear / Panther50Common and worth the fight
Wolf35Hunts in packs, decent Cloth
Crocodile30Swamp and jungle biomes
Stag (deer) / Horse25Easy, low-risk kills
Shark20Harvested from the water
Boar (pig)10Everywhere, great meat too
Chicken6Barely worth the arrow
Scientist / Heavy Scientist5A small bonus off scientist kills

The takeaway is that a tiger or a bear is a walking Cloth pinata, while chickens and scientists are barely a rounding error. If you are hunting for meat and animal fat anyway, you are already stacking Cloth for free, which is why a lot of players never farm hemp until they want industrial volume.

Recycle Road Junk into Cloth

The fastest mid-wipe Cloth is not gathered at all, it is recycled. A huge range of finished items break down into Cloth at a recycler, and roads are littered with exactly those items. A single road loop that clears barrels, dropped clothing and junk piles can net 300 to 500 Cloth once you drop off at the nearest recycler.

Rust cloth recycling chart showing a Tarp gives 60 cloth, a Snow Jacket or Bed 36, a Jacket 30 plus 1 sewing kit with a 20% chance of a second, a Hoodie 24, Rope 18 and a Sewing Kit 12 when put through a monument recycler

Sewing Kit12Only if you are drowning in kits
Do not recycle what you need Rope and Sewing Kits are more valuable as items than as the Cloth they return, because both gate armor and other gear you cannot easily remake. Only feed them to a recycler if you have a genuine surplus. Tarp and spare clothing are the safe things to recycle for Cloth, since you will pick up far more than you ever wear.

What Cloth Builds in Rust

Cloth is woven through every tier of the game. It makes your very first survival gear with no workbench, gates all real armor through the sewing kit, and is even hidden inside end-game explosives. Here is the full list of the recipes that matter.

Two things stand out. First, your entire day-one survival kit, bandage, burlap clothes, sleeping bag and bow, is pure Cloth with no workbench needed, which is why Cloth is the resource a fresh spawn chases first. Second, Cloth gates real armor through the Sewing Kit: a Metal Chest Plate needs 8 Sewing Kits, and each kit is 20 Cloth, so a single plate hides 160 Cloth before you count the metal. Cloth never stops mattering, it just moves up the tiers.

Two Cloth myths to drop Wooden Arrows do not use Cloth, they are 25 Wood plus 10 Stones for two arrows. The Tier 1 workbench does not use Cloth either, it is 500 Wood plus 100 Metal Fragments. Do not stockpile Cloth for either of those. Save it for bandages, clothing, bags and sewing kits, which is where it actually goes.

The Fastest Way to Get Cloth

There is no single “best” Cloth source, only the right one for your stage of the wipe. Match the method to the moment and you will never be short.

Rust cloth strategy image with three phases, hour one punch hemp and skin animals for free cloth, mid wipe recycle road junk for 300 to 500 cloth a loop, and settled run a GGGYYY hemp farm for thousands an hour, plus a myth check that cloth cannot be crafted or recycled and that wooden arrows and the Tier 1 workbench need no cloth
The fastest Cloth source changes as your wipe develops.
  1. Hour one: punch every hemp bush you pass and skin any animal you kill. It is free Cloth with zero setup, and it hands you the seeds and gear to snowball.
  2. Mid wipe: run a road loop and recycle the junk, tarp, spare clothing, rope and old kits. One loop is 300 to 500 Cloth in a few minutes, and you pick up scrap and components on the way.
  3. Settled: build a hemp farm with GGGYYY seeds. It quietly produces thousands of Cloth an hour with no travel and no risk, so you never think about Cloth again for the rest of the wipe.

Pro Tips for Farming Cloth

  1. Never walk past a hemp bush. Ten Cloth and a seed for holding E is the best value in the early game. The seeds compound into your farm.
  2. Carry a Bone Knife. It harvests more Cloth, meat and fat from every corpse than a rock or hatchet, so your hunting doubles your Cloth income.
  3. Recycle, do not wear, junk clothing. A looted Snow Jacket is 36 Cloth in a recycler. Unless you need the cold protection right now, break it down.
  4. Grow hemp outdoors when you can. Outdoor planters use free sun and rain. Indoor farms are stealthier but you pay for water and ceiling lights.
  5. Bank Sewing Kits, not the Cloth for them. Since armor eats kits fast, keep spare kits whole rather than recycling them back into 12 Cloth each.
  6. Store it in a box, not on you. Cloth despawns in 20 minutes on the ground but is safe in any container, so stash it the moment you get home.

Rust Cloth FAQ

How do you get Cloth in Rust?
You gather Cloth from four sources: harvest hemp plants for about 10 Cloth and a seed each, skin animal corpses for 6 to 70 Cloth depending on the animal, cut cactus for 10 to 15 Cloth, and recycle finished items like tarp, rope, gloves and clothing at a recycler. Cloth cannot be crafted, so every point of it comes from the world.
Can you craft Cloth in Rust?
No. Cloth has no crafting recipe, no blueprint and no research option. It is a gather-only base resource, so you will never find it in the crafting menu. You get it from hemp plants, animals, cactus and by recycling other items. Trying to make Cloth is the most common beginner mistake.
What is the fastest way to get Cloth in Rust?
It depends on your stage of the wipe. Early on, punch every hemp bush and skin every animal for free Cloth. Mid wipe, run a road loop and recycle the junk for 300 to 500 Cloth in one trip. Once you are settled, a hemp farm with good genetics produces thousands of Cloth an hour with no risk, which is the fastest long-term source by far.
How much Cloth does a hemp plant give in Rust?
A fully grown hemp plant gives roughly 10 Cloth and 1 Hemp Seed when you harvest it by holding E. Smaller, less mature plants give less, as low as 2 to 5 Cloth. Hemp is the only renewable Cloth source, so it is the one you can farm for unlimited Cloth.
What are the best hemp genetics in Rust?
The best hemp genes are GGGYYY. G is growth speed and Y is yield, so GGGYYY plants grow fast and drop the most Cloth. Read a plant’s genes with a Genetic Analyzer, clone your best plants, and crossbreed toward GGGYYY over a few generations. A GGGYYY strain massively out-yields wild seeds per planter.
How much Cloth do animals drop in Rust?
A tiger drops 70 Cloth, bears, polar bears and panthers give 50, a wolf 35, a crocodile 30, stag and horse 25, a shark 20, a boar 10, a chicken 6, and scientists 5. Use a Bone Knife or other cutting tool on the corpse to get the full amount. Hunting for meat and fat stacks Cloth for free.
Does cactus give Cloth in Rust?
Yes. Cutting a cactus gives Cloth, with a standard cactus worth about 10 and a tall cactus about 15. You need a cutting tool such as a hatchet, pickaxe or chainsaw to harvest it, bare fists and a bone club will not reliably work. Cactus is a handy Cloth source on desert spawns.
What is Cloth used for in Rust?
Cloth builds bandages, sleeping bags, all clothing, the hunting bow, low grade fuel, sewing kits, beds and more. Through sewing kits it gates real armor like the Metal Chest Plate, and it is even an ingredient in C4. Your entire day-one survival kit, bandage, burlap clothes, bag and bow, is made almost entirely of Cloth.
How much Cloth for a sleeping bag and a bandage in Rust?
A Sleeping Bag costs 30 Cloth and a Bandage costs 4 Cloth, and both craft with no workbench. That means for 34 Cloth a fresh spawn can secure a respawn point and a way to stop bleeding, which is why Cloth is the very first resource most players chase.
Can you recycle items into Cloth in Rust?
Yes. Many finished items break down into Cloth at a recycler: a Tarp returns 60 Cloth, a Snow Jacket or Bed 36, a Jacket 30, a Hoodie 24, Rope 18 and a Sewing Kit 12 at a monument recycler. Recycling road junk is one of the fastest mid-wipe Cloth sources, with a single loop netting 300 to 500 Cloth.
Does Cloth despawn in Rust?
If you drop it on the ground, a stack of Cloth despawns after about 20 minutes. Inside a box, container or vehicle it stays until the container itself decays. Cloth stacks to 1,000, so a single inventory slot holds a large supply, but stash it in a box at home to be safe.
What is the Cloth item ID and shortname in Rust?
The Cloth item shortname is cloth and its item ID is -858312878. Server admins and plugin users use the shortname with commands like giving items, while the numeric ID appears in some tools and configs. Cloth stacks to 1,000 and despawns in 20 minutes on the ground.
Do wooden arrows need Cloth in Rust?
No. Wooden Arrows are crafted from 25 Wood plus 10 Stones and make 2 arrows, with no Cloth involved. The Hunting Bow that fires them does need Cloth, at 200 Wood plus 50 Cloth, but the arrows themselves do not. Do not stockpile Cloth for arrows.
How do you farm Cloth fast in Rust?
Build a hemp farm. Plant Hemp Seeds in Large Planter Boxes, supply water and light, and breed the seeds toward the GGGYYY strain for maximum growth and yield. A tuned three by three room of large planters ripens every 40 to 60 minutes and pushes out thousands of Cloth an hour, hands free, which beats every other source once you are established.
Is Cloth the same as Hemp Fibers in Rust?
Effectively yes in modern Rust. The hemp plant you harvest is often called the Hemp Fiber plant, and what it drops is Cloth plus a Hemp Seed. There is no separate Hemp Fibers item to convert, harvesting hemp gives you Cloth directly, so the two terms point at the same Cloth-from-hemp source.
