The plain jacket is the first warm coat most players find in Rust. It drops off dead fresh spawns, it is cheap to research, and it keeps the cold off at night. It also takes your outer chest slot, which is the same slot your chest armor needs, so it is worth knowing exactly what it does before you spend two sewing kits on one.
This Rust jacket guide covers the craft cost and blueprint, the exact protection numbers, how the jacket compares to the Snow Jacket, Road Sign Jacket, Metal Chest Plate and Hide Poncho, what to wear under it, where to find one, and when you should recycle it instead.

What Is the Jacket in Rust?
The jacket is a cloth coat for the chest and arms. In game it is described as rugged clothing that keeps you warm, and that is its main job: it has more melee and cold protection than bullet protection.
Rust gives the chest two clothing layers. The under-layer is a shirt: a hoodie, t-shirt, longsleeve, BDU shirt, burlap shirt or hide vest. The outer layer is a jacket, snow jacket, hide poncho, or an armor piece like the Road Sign Jacket or Metal Chest Plate. You can wear one of each and their protection adds up. Because the jacket is an outer layer, it cannot be worn with chest armor. Our Rust clothing guide has the full slot chart.
Protection only counts where you are hit. A jacket does nothing for a headshot or a leg shot, but every bullet, arrow, swing or animal bite that lands on your torso or arms is reduced.

How to Craft a Jacket in Rust
- Get a Workbench 1. The jacket is a Workbench Level 1 item. A Workbench 2 or 3 also works and crafts it faster.
- Get the blueprint. Put a jacket in a research table with 15 scrap. You need a looted jacket to research it.
- Collect the materials. 50 cloth from hemp or animals, and 2 sewing kits from crates, barrels or recycling. You can also craft sewing kits from cloth and rope.
- Craft it. 30 seconds at a Workbench 1, 15 at a Workbench 2, 7 at a Workbench 3.
The cloth is easy. The two sewing kits are the real price, because the hoodie, pants, boots and every good armor piece need kits too.
Rust Jacket Protection
The jacket gives 20% melee and 15% projectile protection. That is fine on day one against spears, bows and pistols, but it is less bullet protection than a hoodie (20%) and much less than any armor piece. It adds 10% cold, which takes the edge off night time on a temperate map, plus a little bite and radiation protection.
It is not radiation gear. At 5% it barely changes your rad intake, so for monuments with real radiation a hazmat suit replaces your whole outfit. For the snow biome, the Snow Jacket’s 30% cold does three times as much.
Jacket vs Snow Jacket, Road Sign Jacket, Chest Plate and Poncho
| Outer chest piece | Bullet | Melee | Cold | Craft cost | Bench |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jacket | 15% | 20% | 10% | 50 cloth, 2 sewing kits | WB1 |
| Snow Jacket | 20% | 30% | 30% | 60 cloth, 1 sewing kit | WB1 |
| Road Sign Jacket | 20% | 25% | -8% | 20 leather, 2 road signs, 2 sewing kits | WB2 |
| Metal Chest Plate | 25% | 20% | -8% | 50 leather, 18 HQM, 8 sewing kits | WB3 |
| Hide Poncho | 10% | 40% | 8% | 15 leather | None |
The honest answer: the plain jacket loses to the Snow Jacket on every number, and the Snow Jacket costs one fewer sewing kit at the same workbench. The Outpost clothing vending machine even sells Snow Jackets for scrap. For fighting, the Road Sign Jacket and Metal Chest Plate give more bullet protection, at the cost of cold. The jacket’s place is the first night of a wipe, when you loot one off a body and wear it for free.
What to Wear Under Your Jacket
The jacket is the outer layer, so a shirt goes underneath and both count on every chest hit.
| Under the jacket | Bullet alone | With jacket | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burlap Shirt | 10% | 25% | Wipe day, no workbench |
| Longsleeve T-Shirt | 15% | 30% | Warmth, 20% cold together |
| Hoodie | 20% | 35% | The best craftable pair |
| BDU Shirt | 23% | 38% | When you loot one |
A hoodie is the best craftable shirt for it: 35% bullets and 35% melee on the chest. Once you have a Workbench 2 or 3, swap the jacket for a Road Sign Jacket or Metal Chest Plate over that same hoodie, as shown in our Rust armor guide.
How to Get a Jacket in Rust
- Craft it. The reliable route once you have the blueprint and a Workbench 1.
- Loot it. Jackets are a rare crate drop, but players wear them early in a wipe, so you often find one on a body.
- Research it. One looted jacket and 15 scrap gives you the blueprint for the whole wipe.
- Recycle spares. A recycler turns a jacket into 30 cloth and a sewing kit, with a 20% chance of a second kit. That sewing kit is often worth more to you than the jacket.
The jacket has many skins on the Steam market and in the Item Store. Skins change only the look, never the protection. See our Rust skins guide.
Best Jacket Loadouts
| Stage | Chest | Full kit |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe day | Burlap shirt + Hide Poncho | Burlap or hide set, no workbench |
| Workbench 1 | Longsleeve + Jacket | Longsleeve, jacket, pants, boots |
| Looted jacket | Hoodie + Jacket | Hoodie, jacket, pants, boots |
| Snow biome | Hoodie + Snow Jacket | Balaclava, snow jacket, hoodie, pants, boots |
| PvP | Hoodie + Metal Chest Plate | Metal Facemask, chest plate, hoodie, pants, kilt, boots |
Rust Jacket Tips
- Craft the Snow Jacket instead. Same workbench, one fewer sewing kit, better on every stat.
- Wear looted jackets. A free 15% on your chest on day one is better than nothing.
- Put a hoodie under it. The two stack to 35% bullet protection.
- Swap it out for armor. A Road Sign Jacket or Metal Chest Plate uses the same slot and stops more bullets.
- Recycle spares. 30 cloth and a sewing kit is a good return for a jacket you will not wear.
- Do not count on it for rads or snow. Pack a hazmat for rad towns and a snow jacket for the Arctic Research Base.
- Remember the wipe. Clothing, blueprints and the base you keep them in all reset. Check when the next force wipe is.
