Bleach in Rust: What It Does, How to Get It & Can You Recycle It (2026)

Rust items guide, 2026

You opened the F1 item list, clicked into Components and found Bleach sitting between real parts like Gears and Metal Pipes. So what is it for? Short answer: nothing. Bleach is one of the few items in Rust that exists in the game files but has no recipe, no loot source and no recycle value.

This bleach Rust guide covers what the item actually is, how an admin can spawn it, why the recycler rejects it, the other leftover components like it, and what to grab instead when you need scrap or cloth.

TL;DR Bleach is a Component (shortname bleach, ID 1553078977, stack 20) that no recipe uses. It is admin only: vanilla crates, barrels and NPCs never drop it, it cannot be crafted, researched or recycled, and you cannot eat or drink it. If you find bleach in a crate, the server runs a loot plugin. For scrap, recycle real components like Tech Trash (20 scrap) instead.

What Is Bleach in Rust?

Bleach is a white jug with a pink label, filed under the Components category with the same “Uncommon” tag as Gears or Rope. Its in-game description reads: “A powerful oxidizing agent. Can be used as a disinfectant.” That line is the only hint at a purpose, because the game never gives it one.

We checked the current game item data (items.craft.json, the same files our crafting calculator runs on). Out of every craftable item in Rust, not a single recipe lists bleach as an ingredient. It has no blueprint, no tech tree node, no research cost and no recycle output. The official Facepunch wiki marks it the same way: “This item is admin-only and not available in normal gameplay.”

So bleach is a leftover asset. It is in the item list, it has a world model and a translated name in 30 languages (the Pirate English language calls it “Fool’s Rum”), but in vanilla Rust nobody ever finds, crafts or uses one.

How to Get Bleach in Rust

How to get bleach in Rust: only an admin can spawn it by opening the F1 console and typing inventory.give bleach 1, it stacks to 20, and loot plugins are the only way it appears in crates
Admin spawn is the only vanilla source.

On an official or vanilla community server you cannot get bleach at all. It is not in any barrel, crate, loot table, NPC drop, vending machine or Outpost shop. The only way is for an admin to spawn it.

  1. Have admin rights on the server (ownerid or moderatorid). See our Rust admin commands guide for setup.
  2. Press F1 to open the console.
  3. Type the give command and press Enter: inventory.give bleach 1

You can also spawn it by ID, which works the same way:

inventory.giveid 1553078977 20

Once you have it, bleach just sits in your inventory. You cannot drink it, put it on a hotbar to use, or feed it into a crafting recipe. If you drop it, it despawns after 20 minutes.

Found bleach in a crate? Then the server is modded. Loot plugins can add any item to crates, and some server owners slip in junk like bleach as a joke or as a token for a custom event or shop. Check the server description or its Discord for what it does there. More on that in our Rust server mods guide.

Can You Recycle Bleach in Rust?

Can you recycle bleach in Rust: no, it gives 0 scrap; recycle tech trash for 20 scrap, gears and metal springs for 10, sheet metal for 8, metal pipes and road signs for 5 and propane tanks for 1 at a green recycler instead
Bleach gives nothing. These components pay out scrap.

No. A recycler only accepts items that have a recipe to break them back into, and bleach has none, so it will not even go into the input slots. That makes it worse than every real component, which all give something back.

If you came here because you want scrap, these are the components worth throwing in. The numbers are scrap per item at a normal green monument recycler (50% rate), worked out from the game’s recycle data:

ComponentScrap (green recycler)Also gives
Bleach0Nothing, rejected
Tech Trash201 HQM
Gears10Metal fragments
Metal Spring101 HQM
Sheet Metal8Metal fragments + 1 HQM
Metal Pipe51 HQM
Road Signs51 HQM
Propane Tank1Metal fragments

A powered green recycler pays 60% and the red one at the Power Plant pays 75%, so those numbers go up there. Plug any mix of components into our recycle calculator to see exact totals.

Other Leftover Components Like Bleach

Rust leftover components compared: bleach and glue are admin only with no use and no recycle output, duct tape cannot be crafted and is used in nothing, while rope drops from crates and barrels and is used in many recipes
Bleach has a twin: Glue.

Bleach is not the only dead item in the Components tab. The game files carry a small group of components that no live recipe needs:

  • Glue (glue, stack 10): bleach’s closest twin. Also admin only, also not recyclable. The only item that references it is Duct Tape’s hidden recycle data.
  • Duct Tape (ducttape, stack 20): cannot be crafted and no recipe uses it. If an admin spawns some, a recycler breaks it into a little cloth and a chance at glue.

Compare that with real components such as Rope, Tarp and the Sewing Kit, which drop from barrels and crates every wipe and feed dozens of recipes. Our Rust components list covers every one that matters.

Bleach Tips

Rust bleach tips: bleach in a crate means the server is modded, drop it because it wastes a slot, recycle tech trash for scrap and rope or tarp for cloth, server owners can use it as a custom event prize, and its Pirate English name is Fool's Rum
What to actually do with bleach.
  • Do not hoard it. On a vanilla server bleach does nothing, so it only wastes an inventory slot. Drop it.
  • Need scrap? Run barrels on roads and at the Junkyard, then recycle Tech Trash, Gears and Springs.
  • Need cloth? Recycle Rope and Tarp, or farm hemp. Bleach will not help here either.
  • Server owners: because no recipe uses bleach and players cannot get it, it makes a clean custom token for events, shops or quests without breaking the vanilla economy.
  • Planning your next wipe? Check the Rust force wipe countdown so you are online when the map resets.

Bleach Rust FAQ

What is bleach used for in Rust?

Nothing. Bleach is a component in the item list, but no recipe in the current game files uses it, and it cannot be eaten, drunk or deployed.

How do you get bleach in Rust?

Only an admin can spawn it, with the console command inventory.give bleach 1. It never drops from vanilla barrels, crates or NPCs.

Can you recycle bleach in Rust?

No. Bleach has no recipe to break down into, so the recycler will not accept it and it gives no scrap.

What is the bleach item ID in Rust?

The item ID is 1553078977 and the shortname is bleach. It stacks to 20 and despawns 20 minutes after you drop it.

Why did I find bleach in a crate?

The server uses a loot plugin. Vanilla Rust never puts bleach in crates, so a modded server added it, often as a joke item or a custom event token.

Can you craft or research bleach in Rust?

No. Bleach has no blueprint, no research cost and no tech tree node.

Is glue in Rust the same as bleach?

It works the same way. Glue is another admin only component with no live use and no recycle output. It stacks to 10 instead of 20.
