Rust Tarp: Where to Find It, Every Use & Recycle Value (2026)

Rust components guide, updated October 23, 2026

Tarp is one of those components you ignore until the moment you need four of them. Then it is the only thing standing between you and a Hazmat Suit, a composter, a big planter box or a sail for your boat. It cannot be crafted, it cannot be researched, and most players recycle the few they find for cloth without thinking.

This Rust tarp guide covers everything about the item: where it drops and how often, every recipe that uses it (straight from the game’s own item files), what it gives in each recycler, which items hand tarps back when you recycle them, and how to keep a stack in your base all wipe. If you are planning a fresh start, our Rust force wipe countdown shows exactly when the next wipe lands.

TL;DR Tarp is a loot only component: there is no recipe and no blueprint. The best sources are underwater advanced crates (37.7%, 1-6 tarps), underwater basic crates (20.8%), Tunnel and Underwater Lab Dwellers (15.4%) and blue and yellow barrels (8%, 1-2 tarps). It stacks to 20. The big user is the Hazmat Suit (4 tarps), followed by the Composter, Large Planter Box, Large Water Catcher and Parachute (2 each). One tarp recycles into 60 cloth at a powered monument recycler, 75 at the Power Plant and 40 in a safe zone.

What Is Tarp in Rust?

Rust tarp at a glance: a loot only component, cannot be crafted or researched, stacks to 20, recycles into 60 cloth at a powered recycler, used in 17 recipes, despawns after 20 minutes on the ground, item ID 2019042823
The tarp item card, with numbers from the game files.

The tarp is a waterproof sheet of fabric and one of Rust’s components, the same class of item as rope, sewing kits, gears and metal pipes. It does nothing on its own. It sits in a box until a recipe needs it, and almost every recipe that needs it is something that has to keep water in or out: a radiation suit, a water catcher, a planter, a composter, a sail, a parachute or a pool.

Can You Craft Tarp in Rust?

No. Tarp has no blueprint, it is not on the tech tree and you cannot research it at a research table. The only ways to get one are looting, killing NPCs that carry them, or recycling an item that was built with tarp.

Watch out for item sites: some item databases list a “recipe” of 100 cloth at a Workbench 2 for the tarp. That is a hidden value the game uses to work out what a recycler gives back (100 cloth at 60% = 60 cloth). In the game files the tarp is flagged as not craftable, and nothing in the crafting menu or the tech tree will ever make one.

That is the whole reason tarp feels scarce. Cloth is everywhere, but you cannot turn cloth into tarp, so every tarp in your base came out of a barrel, a crate or a dead NPC.

Where to Find Tarp in Rust

Where to find tarp in Rust: underwater advanced crate 37.7 percent for 1 to 6 tarps, underwater basic crate 20.8 percent, Tunnel Dweller 15.4 percent for 1 to 4, Underwater Lab Dweller 15.4 percent, blue and yellow barrels 8 percent for 1 to 2 tarps

Best way to farm tarp

  • Early wipe: barrels. An 8% chance for 1-2 tarps works out to about 0.12 tarps a barrel, so four tarps for a Hazmat Suit is roughly 33 barrels. A road loop between two small monuments does that in one trip, and you pick up scrap and other components on the way. Our components guide has the best barrel routes.
  • Mid wipe: tunnels. Tunnel Dwellers drop tarp 15.4% of the time, almost twice the barrel rate, and the tunnels are full of them. See our jumpsuit guide for what the dwellers wear and carry.
  • With a diving kit: underwater crates. Advanced underwater crates are the best tarp source in the game at 37.7% for up to 6. If you own a wetsuit and a tank, a shipwreck or Underwater Lab run fills a tarp stack faster than anything on land.
Rust tarp tips: hold 4 tarps for the Hazmat Suit before recycling any, hit barrels at an 8 percent chance each or about 33 barrels for 4 tarps, farm the tunnels where dwellers drop 1 to 4 tarps 15.4 percent of the time, and recycle spares for 60 cloth or 75 at the red recycler
Four habits that keep a tarp stack in your base.

Two groups stand out. The farm base (composter, planters, water catchers and water barrels) eats tarp one or two at a time, so a full farm with three large planters, a composter and a large catcher already needs 10 tarps. The Hazmat Suit is the single most expensive recipe at 4, and every Hazmat skin (Arctic Suit, Nomad Suit, Lumberjack Suit and the rest) uses the same 4 tarps. Our Rust water guide and fertilizer guide cover the farm side in detail.

Scientist suits: the Scientist, Heavy Scientist, Arctic, Naval and NVG Scientist suits all have a hidden value of 5 tarps, 2 sewing kits and 8 HQM. You cannot craft them, but that is why they hand back tarps when you recycle one.

Tarp for the Hazmat Suit

Rust Hazmat Suit recipe: 4 tarps, 2 sewing kits and 7 high quality metal at a Workbench 2, 20 second craft, 50 percent radiation protection, 100 scrap to research
The Hazmat Suit is where most players’ tarps end up.

The Hazmat Suit needs 4 tarps, 2 sewing kits and 7 high quality metal at a Workbench Level 2, takes 20 seconds to craft and costs 100 scrap to research. The sewing kits can be crafted at a Workbench 3 and the high quality metal comes from ore, so the tarps are the real gate. That is why the number one tarp rule is simple: keep four in a box until you can make a suit.

Once you have the blueprint, a spare suit is also the best tarp refund in the game. A Hazmat Suit put through a powered monument recycler returns 2 tarps with a 40% chance of a third, plus a sewing kit and some HQM.

Tarp for Boats and Water Gear

Tarp for boats and water toys in Rust: a homemade player boat with sails, Sail 150 wood and 1 tarp at a Workbench 1, Boat Building Station 200 wood and 1 tarp, Inner Tube and Boogie Board 75 metal fragments and 1 tarp, Paddling Pool 100 cloth and 1 tarp
Every sail on a homemade boat costs one tarp.

Since the naval update, tarp is also a boat part. The Boat Building Station (200 wood + 1 tarp, Workbench 1) is where a player boat starts, and every Sail (150 wood + 1 tarp, Workbench 1) costs another tarp. A big galleon with five or six sails needs as many tarps as two Hazmat Suits, so clans that go to sea burn through them fast. Our boat building guide covers the full build, and the Rust boats guide compares every boat in the game.

The summer items, the Inner Tube, Boogie Board and Paddling Pool, take one tarp each, and the Battering Ram needs one for its roof along with 500 wood, 2 sheet metal and 100 HQM at a Workbench 2.

Recycling Tarp: How Much Cloth Do You Get?

Recycling tarp in Rust: one tarp gives 75 cloth at the Power Plant recycler, 60 cloth at a powered monument recycler, 50 cloth with the grid off and 40 cloth in a safe zone, a full stack of 20 gives 1,500, 1,200, 1,000 or 800 cloth
Cloth from one tarp at each recycler tier since Power Trip (August 2026).

Tarp has a recycle value of 100 cloth, and since the Power Trip update the recycler you use decides how much of that you keep. It gives no scrap.

RecyclerEfficiencyCloth per tarpCloth per stack of 20
Power Plant (red) recycler, max power75%751,500
Monument recycler, grid powered60%601,200
Monument recycler, Power Plant offline50%501,000
Safe zone recycler (Outpost, Bandit Camp)40%40800

Sixty cloth per slot is the best cloth rate of any common item, better than a rope (18) or a hoodie (24), which is why our cloth guide lists it first. But you can always pick hemp for cloth and you can never make a tarp, so only recycle tarps you truly do not need. Full numbers for every item are in our recycler guide and the Rust crafting and recycle calculator.

Items That Recycle Back Into Tarp

Rust items that return tarp in a powered recycler: Hazmat Suit 2 tarps plus a 40 percent chance of a third, Composter, Large Planter Box, Large Water Catcher and Parachute 1 tarp plus a 20 percent chance of a second, Sail, Water Barrel and Boat Building Station a 60 percent chance of 1 tarp
Old base items are a hidden tarp source.

Because the recycler gives back 60% of a recipe, anything built with tarp gives some back. At a powered monument recycler:

  • Hazmat Suit: 2 tarps + 40% chance of a 3rd (plus a sewing kit and HQM).
  • Composter, Large Planter Box, Large Water Catcher, Parachute: 1 tarp + 20% chance of a 2nd.
  • Sail, Water Barrel, Boat Building Station, Battering Ram, small planters: a 60% chance of 1 tarp.

Picking up an old composter or planter with a hammer and recycling it is a quick way to get a tarp back when you are one short of a Hazmat Suit. Loot from a raided farm base works the same way.

Rust Tarp Tips

Hold four for the Hazmat: do not recycle any tarp until you can craft a Hazmat Suit. It is the most useful thing tarp makes and you cannot buy the tarps back.
Hit every barrel: at 8% a barrel the tarps add up. About 33 barrels is a Hazmat Suit’s worth, which is one decent road loop.
Go underground or underwater: Tunnel Dwellers (15.4%) and advanced underwater crates (37.7%, up to 6) beat barrels by a wide margin once you have a gun or a diving kit.
Recycle at the red recycler: if you do turn spare tarp into cloth, the Power Plant recycler gives 75 cloth instead of 60, and a safe zone only gives 40.
Do not trust “craft tarp” guides: any guide or item site that tells you to craft tarp from 100 cloth is showing the hidden recycle value. There is no tarp recipe in the current game.

Rust Tarp FAQ

Can you craft tarp in Rust?

No. Tarp has no blueprint, is not on the tech tree and cannot be researched. You get it from barrels, underwater crates, Tunnel and Underwater Lab Dwellers, or by recycling items that were built with tarp. The 100 cloth “recipe” some item sites show is only the hidden recycle value.

Where is the best place to find tarp in Rust?

Underwater advanced crates are the best source, with a 37.7% chance of 1-6 tarps. On land, Tunnel Dwellers drop tarp 15.4% of the time and blue and yellow barrels 8% of the time for 1-2 tarps.

What is tarp used for in Rust?

Tarp is used in 17 craftable recipes. The biggest are the Hazmat Suit (4 tarps), the Above Ground Pool (3), and the Composter, Large Planter Box, Large Water Catcher and Parachute (2 each). Sails, the Boat Building Station, the Water Barrel, the Battering Ram, small planters and small water catchers take 1.

How many tarps do you need for a Hazmat Suit?

Four. A Hazmat Suit costs 4 tarps, 2 sewing kits and 7 high quality metal at a Workbench Level 2, and every Hazmat skin uses the same recipe.

What does tarp recycle into in Rust?

Cloth only, with no scrap. One tarp gives 60 cloth at a powered monument recycler, 75 at the Power Plant recycler, 50 with the Power Plant offline and 40 at a safe zone recycler.

What is the tarp stack size in Rust?

Tarp stacks to 20 per slot. Its shortname is tarp and its item ID is 2019042823.

Do barrels drop tarp in Rust?

Yes. Blue and yellow barrels have an 8% chance to drop 1-2 tarps, which is about 33 barrels on average for the 4 tarps a Hazmat Suit needs.
