Every gun, door, rocket and turret in Rust is built from the same pile of grey loot: components. Gears, metal springs, pipes, tech trash, rifle bodies and the rest do nothing on their own. They sit in the middle of the crafting chain, between the raw resources you farm and the gear you actually use, and they are almost always the thing you run out of first.
This Rust components guide is the hub for all of them. It lists every component in the game, what each one builds, where it drops, which ones you can craft, and exactly what each gives back in a recycler after the Power Trip changes. Every component with its own full guide on this site is linked, so you can jump straight to the detail.

What Are Components in Rust?
Components are a whole item category in Rust, with their own tab in your inventory filter. The game uses them as the middle layer of crafting. You gather metal fragments, high quality metal and cloth yourself, but the parts that make an item powerful, the spring in a gun, the gears in a door, the tech trash in C4, have to come from the world.
That is a deliberate brake on progression. A solo with a full box of sulfur still cannot rocket a base without metal pipes, and a group with a Workbench 3 still cannot craft an AK without a rifle body. Components force you to go out, run roads, hit monuments and take fights.
Three rules apply to every component:
- They are ingredients only. You cannot equip, place or use a component directly.
- They recycle. Every component breaks down in a recycler into scrap, fragments, HQM, cloth or other components.
- They wipe. Like all loot, every component is gone at the force wipe, so a hoard is only worth what you spend before then.
Every Rust Component: Full List
Here is every core component, what it is mainly used for, the best place to get it, and what one gives back in a green monument recycler with the Power Plant grid powered (60%). Click a name for the full guide where we have one.

| Semi Automatic Body | Semi-Automatic Rifle, Semi-Automatic Pistol | Military crates, barrels | 18 scrap, 90 frags, 1 HQM (+80%) |
| Targeting Computer | Auto Turret, Computer Station | Oil Rig and locked crates (~55%), Bradley crates | 3 tech trash, 60 frags, 1 HQM |
| CCTV Camera | Auto Turret, Drone, cameras | Military and elite crates | 1 to 2 tech trash, 1 to 2 HQM |
| Electric Fuse | Monument keycard puzzles (1 or 2 per puzzle) | Crates, toolboxes | 24 scrap |

| Empty Propane Tank | Flame turret, water purifier, campfire fuel items | Barrels, roadside junk | 60 frags, 1 scrap (+20%) |
Yields are per single item. With the Power Plant offline (every wipe start) a green recycler pays about a sixth less, a safe zone recycler at Outpost or Bandit Camp pays two thirds of the numbers above, and the red recycler at the Power Plant pays a quarter more. Our recycler guide has the full safe zone column.
Common Components vs Rare Components
Components fall into two clear groups, and knowing which group an item is in tells you where to look for it and how much it is worth.
Common components come out of the blue and yellow barrels along every road, plus toolboxes and basic crates. Gears, springs, pipes, blades, sheet metal, road signs, tarps, rope, sewing kits and propane tanks are all in this group. A ten minute road run usually fills a few slots with them, which is why they are also the cheapest ones to recycle.
Rare components mostly come from military crates, elite crates, locked crates and scientists. Rifle bodies, SMG bodies, tech trash, targeting computers, CCTV cameras and Heavy Fuses live here. They are the real progression gate: you can have every blueprint and still be stuck on Thompsons because nobody brought home a rifle body.
Rust Component Recycle Values
If you are recycling for scrap, only a handful of components matter. This is the scrap you get per item, best first, at a powered green recycler.
| Rank | Component | Scrap each (60%) | Offline grid (50%) | Red recycler (75%) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rifle Body | 30 | 25 | ~37 | Recycle spares, keep a few for AKs |
| 2 | Tech Trash | 24 | 20 | 30 | Keep for C4 if you raid |
| 2 | Electric Fuse | 24 | 20 | 30 | Keep one if you run keycard puzzles |
| 4 | SMG Body | 18 | 15 | ~22 | Recycle once you have the guns you need |
| 4 | Semi Automatic Body | 18 | 15 | ~22 | Recycle, plus 90 frags |
| 6 | Gears | 12 | 10 | 15 | Keep for doors early wipe |
| 6 | Metal Spring | 12 | 10 | 15 | Keep if you craft guns |
| 8 | Sheet Metal | 9 to 10 | 8 | ~12 | Recycle for 120 frags |
| 9 | Metal Pipe | 6 | 5 | 7 | Keep for rockets |
| 9 | Road Signs | 6 | 5 | 7 | Keep 2 for a jacket, recycle the rest |
| 11 | Metal Blade | 2 to 3 | 2 | 3 | Recycle on site only |
| 12 | Empty Propane Tank | 1 to 2 | 1 | 1 to 2 | Leave it unless you need frags |
Can You Craft Components in Rust?
Some of them, and it is almost always a bad deal. The cheap barrel components have a workbench recipe that costs scrap and metal, so you can make one in an emergency. The rare ones have no recipe at all.
| Component | Recipe | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Gears | 100 scrap + 25 metal fragments, Workbench 3 | No. Recycles back for 12 scrap |
| Metal Spring | 50 scrap + 2 HQM, Workbench 3 | Only to finish one gun |
| Metal Pipe | 20 scrap + 2 HQM, Workbench 3 | Only for the last rocket of a raid |
| Sheet Metal | 200 metal fragments + 2 HQM + 30 scrap, Workbench 3 | Rarely |
| Road Signs | 20 scrap + 2 HQM | Rarely, barrels drop plenty |
| Metal Blade | 30 metal fragments + 10 scrap, Workbench 2 | Fine if you need one blade |
| Empty Propane Tank | 100 metal fragments + 10 scrap | Fine, cheap |
| Sewing Kit | 20 cloth + 3 rope | Yes, if you have the rope |
| Rope, Tarp, Tech Trash, Rifle Body, SMG Body, Targeting Computer, CCTV Camera, Electric Fuse, Heavy Fuse | No recipe | Loot, buy or recycle only |
Recipes for the craftable ones still need the blueprint, either from the tech tree or a research table. Since the Pivot or Die update in November 2025, research and tech tree nodes cost 15, 30, 60 or 120 scrap depending on tier.
Gun Components: Bodies, Springs and Pipes
Every craftable firearm past the pipe shotgun needs a body, and almost every one needs a spring. The body decides which gun you can make.
| Body | Builds | Where it drops |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle Body | Assault Rifle, Bolt Action Rifle, HMLMG | Elite crates (~28%), military crates (~17%), mission loot |
| SMG Body | Custom SMG, Thompson, MP5A4 | Elite (~28%), military (~17%), locked crates (~12%) |
| Semi Automatic Body | Semi-Automatic Rifle, Semi-Automatic Pistol | Military crates, barrels, scientists |
Springs are the second gate. The Thompson and Custom SMG need one, the MP5A4 needs two, and rifles need more. Pipes show up in pistols and in every rocket. If you are planning a gun craft, count bodies first, springs second, and HQM last.
Raid and Base Components
The other big drain is your base and your raids. A handful of components decide whether you can lock a door, run a turret or blow a wall.
- C4: every Timed Explosive Charge needs 2 tech trash. A sheet metal wall takes 4 C4, so 8 tech trash a wall.
- Rockets: every rocket needs 2 metal pipes, and the Rocket Launcher needs 4. See all explosives for full raid costs.
- Doors: the garage door costs 2 gears and the armored door 5 more, which is why gears vanish early wipe.
- Turrets: the Auto Turret needs a targeting computer, a CCTV camera and 25 HQM. The flame turret uses propane tanks and a gear instead.
- Armor: the Hazmat Suit takes 5 tarps and 2 sewing kits, and road sign and metal armor lives on sewing kits and road signs.
Where to Farm Components in Rust
There is no single best spot, because different components drop in different places. Match the run to what you are short of.
| You need | Go here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gears, springs, pipes, sheet metal, road signs, tarps | Road barrel loop between low tier monuments | Barrels and toolboxes respawn fast and are safe early wipe |
| Rope and sewing kits | Fishing (tackle boxes), underwater crates, Tunnel Dwellers | Every tackle box has a guaranteed rope |
| Tech trash, rifle and SMG bodies | Military Tunnels, Launch Site, Arctic Base, scientists | Military and elite crates, plus scientist drops |
| Targeting computers | Oil Rig locked crates, Bradley at Launch Site | About a coin flip per crate |
| Heavy Fuses | Military crates anywhere | Loot only, about 12% per crate |
| Anything, safely | Outpost vending machines | Some components are sold for scrap or cloth when you are short |
Always carry your component haul to a recycler at a green monument rather than a safe zone if you can survive the walk. At 60% versus 40% a full inventory of rifle bodies and tech trash is hundreds of scrap apart.
Engine Parts and Fuses
Two smaller families also sit in the component tab:
- Engine parts: carburetors, crankshafts, pistons, spark plugs and valves, each in low, medium and high quality. They go into the engine modules of modular cars, and better parts mean more speed and better fuel use. They drop from crates and barrels.
- Fuses: the classic Electric Fuse powers keycard puzzles at monuments like the blue card rooms, while the Heavy Fuse from the August 2026 Power Trip update feeds the Power Plant grid that turns green recyclers up to 60%.
Keep or Recycle? Component Cheat Sheet
- Always keep: gears, metal springs, metal pipes and tech trash. These four gate doors, guns, rockets and C4, and they are the slowest to replace.
- Keep a few: sewing kits, tarps, road signs and one electric fuse. Enough for your armor set and one puzzle run.
- Recycle spares: rifle bodies, SMG bodies and semi bodies once your gun count is where you want it, plus sheet metal for the 120 fragments.
- Leave on the ground: metal blades and empty propane tanks on a long run. They are not worth a slot unless a recycler is right there.
- Spend before wipe: components do not survive a force wipe. Craft or recycle your stash before the server resets.
Rust Components FAQ
What are components in Rust?
Components are crafting ingredients like gears, metal springs, pipes, tech trash and rifle bodies. You cannot use them on their own. You loot them from barrels, crates and scientists and use them to craft guns, doors, explosives, armor and electrical items, or recycle them for scrap.
What is the best component to recycle in Rust?
The Rifle Body. It gives 30 scrap and HQM at a powered green recycler, 25 with the Power Plant offline and about 37 at the red Power Plant recycler. Tech trash and electric fuses are next at 24 scrap each.
Can you craft components in Rust?
Some. Gears, metal springs, metal pipes, sheet metal, road signs, metal blades, propane tanks and sewing kits have workbench recipes, usually costing scrap and metal. Rope, tarp, tech trash, rifle bodies, SMG bodies, targeting computers, CCTV cameras and fuses cannot be crafted at all.
Where do you find components in Rust?
Road barrels and toolboxes drop the common ones like gears, springs, pipes, sheet metal and tarps. Military crates, elite crates, locked crates and scientists drop the rare ones like rifle bodies, SMG bodies, tech trash and targeting computers.
Should I recycle gears in Rust?
Not early in a wipe. Gears give only 12 scrap but garage doors, armored doors, gates and turbines all need them, and crafting one costs 100 scrap. Recycle gears only once your base doors are done and you have a spare stack.
Do components wipe in Rust?
Yes. Components are normal items, so they are deleted on every map wipe and force wipe. Spend or recycle them before the wipe.
Which components does a recycler give back from guns?
Recycling a gun returns part of its recipe, including a chance at its body, springs and pipes. The chance matches the recycler yield, so a powered green recycler gives about a 60% chance at each component in the recipe.
How many tech trash do you need for C4 in Rust?
Two per C4, alongside 20 explosives and 5 cloth at a Workbench 3. Four C4 for a sheet metal wall means 8 tech trash.
