Large Backpack Rust: Slots, Where to Find It & How Backpacks Work (2026)

Rust gear and looting guide, 2026

Every Rust player knows the feeling: a monument run goes perfectly, then your inventory is full and you have to leave a stack of scrap or a gun on the floor. The Large Backpack fixes that. It is a military pack that sits on your back and adds 28 extra slots, more than your whole main inventory.

You cannot craft it, so you have to find one. This large backpack Rust guide covers how many slots it has, where to find it, how it compares to the Small Backpack, how backpacks work when you die, what it recycles into and how to get the most out of it.

TL;DR The Large Backpack has 28 slots and goes in the backpack slot above your clothing row. It cannot be crafted and has no blueprint. It drops from green Military Crates with about a 5% chance, so loot monuments like Military Tunnels, Launch Site, the Dome and the Oil Rigs. There is no movement penalty. When you die it drops next to your body and anyone can pick it up with everything inside. An empty one despawns after 40 minutes, a full one can last up to 2 hours. Recycled, it gives 12 scrap, 60 cloth and 3 HQM.

What Is the Large Backpack in Rust?

Backpacks came to Rust in the Bags to Riches update in February 2024. There are two: the handmade Small Backpack you can craft, and the Large Backpack, which the game describes as “a larger military backpack that can hold items inside it”.

You wear it in its own backpack slot, so it does not take a clothing or armor slot. Open your inventory and its 28 slots appear as a second container next to your main inventory. Since late 2025, loot that does not fit in your main inventory goes into your backpack automatically, so you no longer have to drag every item in by hand.

How Many Slots Does the Large Backpack Have?

How many slots does the large backpack have in Rust: 28 slots shown full of ore, stone, wood and components, compared with 12 for the Small Backpack, 24 for the main inventory and 6 for the hotbar belt
28 slots is more than your entire main inventory.

The Large Backpack has 28 slots. To put that in context:

  • Main inventory: 24 slots.
  • Hotbar belt: 6 slots.
  • Small Backpack: 12 slots.
  • Large Backpack: 28 slots.

With a Large Backpack on, you carry 58 stacks in total instead of 30. That is enough for a full ore run, a whole monument of loot, or a raid kit plus everything you take out of the base.

Where to Find a Large Backpack in Rust

Where to find a large backpack in Rust: loot green Military Crates at Military Tunnels, Launch Site and the Dome, about a 5% chance per crate, plus puzzle rooms and the Oil Rigs
No blueprint exists, so Military Crates are the only way.

The Large Backpack cannot be crafted, researched or bought from the tech tree. The only way to get one is to loot green Military Crates, where it has about a 5% chance to drop. That means you should expect to open around 20 crates on average before you see one.

The best places to farm Military Crates are:

Our Rust monuments guide lists every monument by tier, so you can plan a route that hits the most crates.

Large Backpack vs Small Backpack

Large backpack vs small backpack in Rust: the small one has 12 slots and is crafted at a Workbench 1 from 50 cloth and 5 sewing kits, the large one has 28 slots and only comes from Military Crates, recycles into 12 scrap and despawns after 40 minutes empty
The small one is your day one bag, the large one is the upgrade.

Craft a Small Backpack early in the wipe so you always have extra space. Swap to a Large Backpack the moment you find one. Both use the same slot, so you can only wear one at a time.

How Backpacks Work in Rust

How backpacks work in Rust: worn in the backpack slot above the clothing row, the slot is shared with the parachute, a backpack with items in it cannot be swapped, backpacks float, there is no speed penalty and a dropped bag takes 3 seconds to pick up
One slot, no slowdown, and it floats.
  • Backpack slot: it sits in a special slot just above your clothing row.
  • Shared with the parachute: you can wear a backpack or a parachute, not both.
  • Empty it to take it off: a backpack with items inside cannot be unequipped or swapped. Empty it first.
  • No speed penalty: a full Large Backpack does not slow you down.
  • It floats: a dropped backpack floats on water no matter what is inside.
  • Pick-up time: hold E for about 3 seconds to pick up a backpack from the ground.
  • Only one full bag: you can carry spare empty backpacks in your inventory, but only one full backpack.

What Happens to Your Backpack When You Die

What happens to your large backpack when you die in Rust: it drops next to your corpse, anyone can hold E to equip it with the loot, it despawns after 40 minutes empty or up to 2 hours full, and weapons inside can be buried for the metal detector
A dropped Large Backpack is a jackpot for whoever reaches it first.

When you die, your backpack drops to the ground right beside your body as a separate item. Anyone who finds it can hold E to equip it with all the loot still inside, or open it and take items one by one.

A dropped Large Backpack despawns after 40 minutes when empty. When it holds items the timer gets longer based on what is inside, up to 2 hours. Since the August 2025 update, weapons inside a backpack that despawns can be buried in the ground, and anyone with a metal detector can dig them up.

Should You Recycle a Large Backpack?

Large backpack recycle in Rust: one Large Backpack gives 12 scrap, 60 cloth and 3 high quality metal at a monument recycler, or 8 scrap, 40 cloth and 2 HQM at a safe zone recycler
Recycle spares, but always keep one for yourself.

12 scrap is not much for an item this rare. Keep your first one, and only recycle a spare when you already have one in the base. There is also a Krieg Large Backpack skin from the Warhammer 40,000 pack (October 2025). It changes the look only, the slots stay the same.

Large Backpack Tips

Rust large backpack tips: craft a small backpack on day one, use the backpack on ore and stone farm runs, bank loot often and empty it before a fight, empty it before swapping to a parachute, and roam light between monuments
A full backpack is only worth it if you get it home.
  • Start with a Small Backpack. It only needs cloth and sewing kits, so craft one on day one and upgrade later.
  • Use it for farm runs. Ore, stone and wood fill 28 slots fast, so you make fewer trips home.
  • Bank often. Everything in the bag drops when you die. Empty it at base before you take a fight.
  • Plan your parachute. The parachute uses the same slot, so empty and stash the backpack before you jump from a minicopter.
  • Run back fast after a death. Your bag sits next to your body, and other players will go straight for it.
  • Watch for floating bags. Backpacks float, so a fight on the water can leave free loot bobbing on the surface.
