The catch is severe. Heavy plate slows your movement, stacks a brutal cold and heat penalty (-17% each piece), and the helmet blocks you from wearing a hood. Only for base defense. Heavy plate has the highest numbers in the game (90% projectile on the helmet), but it slows your movement, stacks a -17% cold and heat penalty per piece, and blocks a hood. It is excellent for holding a doorway during a raid and terrible for roaming. Build it if you expect to be raided, but do not wear it out on the map.
Do armor skins change your protection in Rust?
No. Armor and clothing skins are purely cosmetic. A skinned metal facemask has identical protection to a default one. Skins only change how your gear looks, so never buy a skin expecting a stat advantage. Protection comes from the armor item itself, not the skin applied to it.
