Wolf Headdress Rust: Craft Cost, Stats, Wolf Skull & Bandana Combo (2026)

Rust armor guide, 2026

The Wolf Headdress is the best cheap helmet in Rust. It costs 10 cloth and one wolf skull, it takes 30% off every bullet and 60% off every melee hit to your head, and with a bandana under it you get the same bullet protection as a Coffee Can Helmet for a fraction of the price.

This guide covers the wolf headdress recipe and the Workbench 1 change from the August 2026 wipe, its exact protection stats, how to get a wolf skull, the wolf headdress and bandana combo, how it compares with the other Rust helmets, its Lunar New Year skins, and when to upgrade.

TL;DR The Wolf Headdress crafts from 10 cloth and 1 wolf skull. Since the August 2026 Power Trip wipe it needs a Workbench 1; before that you could craft it anywhere. The blueprint is known by default. It gives 30% projectile, 60% melee, 13% explosion, 10% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation protection. You get wolf skulls by killing a wolf and harvesting the body with a hatchet or knife; they never drop from crates. Wear a bandana under it for 35% bullet and 70% melee protection. A recycler gives back 6 cloth and a 60% chance of the wolf skull.

What Is the Wolf Headdress in Rust?

The Wolf Headdress (shortname hat.wolf) is a helmet made from a wolf’s skull and some cloth. It sits in the head slot as a half helmet, which means it leaves your face free. That matters, because it lets you wear a bandana under it, which you cannot do with a Coffee Can Helmet or a Metal Facemask.

It is a wipe-day item. You can make one in the first hour, and it out-protects every other helmet you can craft at a Workbench 1 against bullets. Most players wear it until they can afford a Metal Facemask at Workbench 3. Our Rust armor guide shows where it fits in a full kit.

How to Craft a Wolf Headdress in Rust

How to craft a wolf headdress in Rust: 10 cloth plus 1 wolf skull makes 1 Wolf Headdress at a Workbench 1; blueprint known by default, craft time 15 seconds at Workbench 1, recycles to 6 cloth and the skull
Two ingredients and a Workbench 1.
  1. Get a wolf skull. Kill a wolf and harvest it with a hatchet or knife. The next section explains how.
  2. Collect 10 cloth. Hemp plants are the fastest source on wipe day. Our Rust cloth guide lists every other one.
  3. Place a Workbench 1. You will want one early anyway for tools, the bow and building parts.
  4. Craft it. The blueprint is known by default, so it shows up in your crafting menu as soon as you stand at the bench with a skull in your inventory.
Changed in 2026 The wolf headdress used to need no workbench at all. Facepunch moved it to a Tier 1 workbench “in line with other helmets” in the August 2026 Power Trip update. Older guides that say you can craft it in the field are out of date.

Rust Wolf Headdress Protection

Rust wolf headdress protection stats: 30% projectile, 60% melee, 13% explosion, 10% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation
Every protection value on the wolf headdress.

Rust protection is a percentage off the damage that hits that body part. A wolf headdress takes 30% off every bullet to your head and 60% off every spear, sword or rock hit. That is a lot of head protection for something you can make with a bow and a few hemp plants.

The melee number is what makes it so good early. On wipe day most fights are spears, bows and the crossbow, and 60% melee protection turns a two-hit spear kill into three or four hits. It also blocks 10% of animal bites, which helps when the next wolf finds you. The 4% radiation is close to nothing, so it is no help at radiation monuments. Use a hazmat suit for that.

How to Get a Wolf Skull in Rust

How to get a wolf skull in Rust: find a wolf in the forest or fields, kill it at range with a bow, harvest the body with a hatchet or knife for 1 skull plus meat, leather and bone, carry a torch, crush a spare skull for bone fragments
Wolf skulls only come from wolves.

The wolf skull is the hard part of the recipe. It does not drop from barrels, crates or airdrops. The only way to get one is to kill a wolf and harvest the body.

  1. Find a wolf. Wolves roam forests and open fields, and since the 2024 AI rework they move in packs, howl to regroup and stalk you before they attack.
  2. Kill it at range. A hunting bow or crossbow is safer than a spear. Fire scares the new wolves, so a lit torch helps keep a pack off you.
  3. Harvest the body. A hatchet, salvaged axe or knife gives you the skull every time, along with wolf meat, leather, bone fragments and animal fat. Keep harvesting until the body is gone so you collect everything.

Got more skulls than you need? You can crush a wolf skull into bone fragments from your inventory, or keep it as a spare helmet. A headdress lost in a fight is one skull and ten cloth to replace.

Tip Wolves are scarcer than deer and boar on most maps. If you see one on wipe day, take it. One skull is a helmet that beats anything else you can craft at Workbench 1 against bullets.

The Wolf Headdress and Bandana Combo

Wolf headdress and bandana combo in Rust: 30% from the wolf headdress plus 5% from the bandana mask equals 35% bullet and 70% melee protection for 15 cloth and 1 skull, the same bullets as a Coffee Can Helmet with more melee
Two cheap pieces that add up to a coffee can.

Rust adds up the protection of every piece you wear on the same body part. The bandana mask fits under the wolf headdress and adds 5% bullet and 10% melee protection, so together they give 35% bullets and 70% melee.

That matches the Coffee Can Helmet on bullets and beats it on melee (the coffee can is 35% and 50%). The coffee can needs a Workbench 2, 60 metal fragments and a sewing kit. The wolf and bandana combo needs a Workbench 1, 15 cloth and a skull. Unless you already have a coffee can, the wolf combo is the better deal.

Wolf Headdress vs Other Rust Helmets

Wolf headdress vs other Rust helmets: Bone Helmet 25% bullet 40% melee no bench, Wolf Headdress 30% 60% Workbench 1, Riot Helmet 25% 80% Workbench 1, Coffee Can 35% 50% Workbench 2, Metal Facemask 50% 70% Workbench 3
Head armor compared, worn on its own.
HelmetBulletsMeleeWorkbenchBandana under it
Bone Helmet25%40%NoneNo
Wolf Headdress30%60%Workbench 1Yes (35% / 70%)
Riot Helmet25%80%Workbench 1Yes (30% / 90%)
Coffee Can Helmet35%50%Workbench 2No
Metal Facemask50%70%Workbench 3No

The wolf headdress is the best bullet helmet you can make at Workbench 1. The riot helmet wins on melee, so it is the better pick for a melee-only server or the first few minutes of wipe, but once guns come out the wolf’s extra 5% bullet protection matters more. The real upgrade is the Metal Facemask at Workbench 3, which takes 50% off headshots. The full list of wearables is in our Rust clothing guide.

Wolf Headdress Skins

Wolf headdress skins in Rust: the default Wolf Headdress and the Lunar New Year masks that replace it, Rat Mask 2020, Ox Mask 2021, Tiger Mask 2022, Rabbit Mask 2023, Dragon Mask 2024, Snake Mask 2025 and Horse Mask 2026
The Lunar New Year masks are wolf headdress skins.

Each year Facepunch releases a Lunar New Year mask that replaces the wolf headdress: the Rat Mask (2020), Ox Mask (2021), Tiger Mask (2022), Rabbit Mask (2023), Dragon Mask (2024), Snake Mask (2025) and Horse Mask (2026). They are cosmetic only. They use the same recipe, the same wolf skull and the same protection, and since the 2026 change they also need a Workbench 1. You buy them in the Rust Item Store while the event runs, or on the Steam Market after. Our Rust skins guide explains how skins work.

Rust Wolf Headdress Tips

Rust wolf headdress tips: get a Workbench 1 first, add a bandana for 35% bullets, keep every wolf skull, skip the coffee can because it only adds 5% bullets, upgrade to the Metal Facemask at Workbench 3, not for radiation at only 4%
Small habits that make your wolf headdress count.
  • Put down a Workbench 1 first. Since August 2026 you cannot craft it without one.
  • Always add a bandana. 5 cloth turns 30% into 35% bullets.
  • Keep every skull. A spare skull is a spare helmet after a death.
  • Skip the coffee can. It is only 5% more bullet protection than the wolf alone, and the wolf plus a bandana already matches it. Save the sewing kit for the facemask.
  • Upgrade at Workbench 3. The Metal Facemask’s 50% is the next real step on headshots.
  • Don’t recycle it. You only get 6 cloth and a 60% chance of the skull back, so you can lose the skull.
  • Remember the wipe. Your helmets go when the server resets. Check when the next force wipe is.

Rust Wolf Headdress FAQ

How do you craft a wolf headdress in Rust?

Craft it from 10 cloth and 1 wolf skull at a Workbench 1. The blueprint is known by default, so you do not need to research it.

Does the wolf headdress need a workbench in Rust?

Yes. Since the August 2026 Power Trip update the wolf headdress needs a Workbench 1, like the other helmets. Before that it could be crafted anywhere.

How much protection does a wolf headdress give in Rust?

The Wolf Headdress gives 30% projectile, 60% melee, 13% explosion, 10% bite, 6% cold and 4% radiation protection to the head.

How do you get a wolf skull in Rust?

Kill a wolf and harvest the body with a hatchet, salvaged axe or knife. Wolf skulls do not drop from crates, barrels or airdrops.
