The Coffee Can Helmet is the best head armor you can craft in Rust without high quality metal. It needs a Workbench 2, 60 metal fragments, 15 cloth and one sewing kit, and it takes 35% off every bullet that hits your head.
This guide covers the coffee can helmet’s craft cost and blueprint, its exact protection stats, how it compares with the riot helmet, bone helmet and Metal Facemask, the road sign kit it belongs to, its armor insert slot, where to loot one and when to upgrade.

What Is the Coffee Can Helmet in Rust?
The Coffee Can Helmet (shortname coffeecan.helmet) is a full head piece made from a cut-open metal can. It sits in the head slot and covers the face, so it replaces both a hat and a bandana. In game it is the middle step of head armor: stronger than anything you can craft at Workbench 1, weaker than the Metal Facemask you unlock at Workbench 3.
Its selling point is the price. It needs no high quality metal at all, so it is the head piece most players wear between their first Workbench 2 and their first stack of HQM. Together with the Road Sign Jacket and Road Sign Kilt it makes up the road sign armor kit covered in our Rust armor guide.

How to Craft a Coffee Can Helmet in Rust
- Get a Workbench 2. Our Workbench Level 2 guide covers the cost and what else it unlocks.
- Learn the blueprint. Put a looted coffee can in a research table with 30 scrap, or unlock its node on the Workbench 2 tech tree for the same 30 scrap. Our Rust tech tree guide shows the path.
- Collect the materials. 60 metal fragments, 15 cloth and 1 sewing kit.
- Craft it at the bench. It takes about 22 seconds.
The sewing kit is the part that slows people down. One kit costs 20 cloth and 3 rope, so the whole helmet comes to about 35 cloth, 60 metal fragments and 3 rope from scratch. Sewing kits also turn up in crates and barrels, and it is worth saving them for armor rather than spending them on sleeping bags.
Rust Coffee Can Helmet Protection
The coffee can gives 35% projectile and 50% melee protection to your head. Head hits do extra damage in Rust, so cutting a third off every one of them is the difference between dying to one rifle tap and surviving the fight.
The minor stats are small: 8% bite, 8% explosion and 5% radiation. It will not keep you safe in a rad town on its own, so bring a hazmat suit for those. One quiet plus: unlike the Metal Facemask and road sign armor, the coffee can does not make you colder, so it is a comfortable helmet in the snow.
Coffee Can vs Riot Helmet, Bone Helmet and Metal Facemask
| Helmet | Bullet | Melee | Workbench | HQM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bone Helmet | 25% | 40% | None | No |
| Riot Helmet | 25% | 80% | Workbench 1 | No |
| Coffee Can Helmet | 35% | 50% | Workbench 2 | No |
| Metal Facemask | 50% | 70% | Workbench 3 | 15 |
| Ballistic Helmet | 60% | 70% | Loot only | – |
Against guns the coffee can beats every head piece you can make before Workbench 3. The riot helmet wins on melee, which matters early when everyone swings spears, but once bows and guns take over the extra 10% bullet protection is what keeps you alive.
There is one cheap rival. A Wolf Headdress with a bandana under it also reaches 35% bullets and 70% melee at only a Workbench 1, as our bandana guide shows. The coffee can covers the face slot, so you cannot add a bandana to it. If you already have a wolf skull, that combo is just as good. If not, the coffee can is the easier craft.
The Metal Facemask is the real upgrade: 50% bullets instead of 35%. It costs 15 high quality metal and 6 sewing kits at Workbench 3, so swap as soon as you can afford it.
The Road Sign Armor Kit
The coffee can is the head of the road sign kit, the strongest set you can wear before Workbench 3 and the go-to roam kit on a poor wipe.
| Piece | Protection | Craft cost | Workbench |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Can Helmet | 35% proj / 50% melee | 60 Metal Fragments, 15 Cloth, 1 Sewing Kit | WB2 |
| Road Sign Jacket | 20% proj / 25% melee | 20 Leather, 2 Road Signs, 2 Sewing Kits | WB2 |
| Road Sign Kilt | 20% proj / 25% melee | 10 Leather, 1 Road Sign, 2 Sewing Kits | WB2 |
Wear a hoodie and pants under the road sign pieces, because Rust adds the protection of every layer on the same body part. A hoodie under the jacket takes your chest to 40% bullets for no HQM. The full kit needs 5 sewing kits, so start saving them as soon as you have a Workbench 2.
Coffee Can Helmet Armor Inserts
Since armor inserts arrived, crafted armor rolls random insert slots. The coffee can is a single-slot piece, like the Metal Facemask and Road Sign Kilt: it rolls 0 or 1 slot, never more. The roll is fixed when you craft it.
- Metal Armor Insert: +4% projectile and +2% melee, which lifts the coffee can to 39% bullets. This is the PvP pick.
- Crafting Quality Tea: drink it before you craft to raise the odds of getting the slot.
- No slot? The helmet works the same, it just cannot take an insert. Craft another one if the slot matters to you.
Our armor inserts guide lists every insert type and what it adds.
How to Get a Coffee Can Helmet in Rust
- Craft it. 60 metal fragments, 15 cloth and 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 2.
- Supply drops: the best loot source. A good share of drops carry one, and some carry several.
- Metal detector: dig spots in fields can turn up a coffee can along with road sign armor.
- Elite, locked and military crates: a small chance each, around 1% or less.
- Oil rig scientists and heavy scientists: a very small chance on death, see our Large Oil Rig guide.
Spares are worth recycling. A recycler turns a coffee can into 9 cloth, 36 metal fragments and a 60% chance at the sewing kit. A safe zone recycler returns 6 cloth, 24 metal fragments and a 40% chance at the kit.
Rust Coffee Can Helmet Skins
The coffee can is one of the most skinned head pieces in Rust, with a long list of skins on the Steam market and in the weekly Rust Item Store. Skins change only the look. A skinned coffee can has exactly the same 35% bullet and 50% melee protection as the default red one. Our Rust skins guide covers how to buy, sell and apply them.
Rust Coffee Can Helmet Tips
- Craft it the moment you place a Workbench 2. It is the cheapest big jump in protection you will make all wipe.
- Take the bandana off. The game blocks a bandana under a coffee can, so it only wastes a slot.
- Build the full road sign kit. Coffee can, road sign jacket and kilt with a hoodie and pants underneath is a real PvP kit with no HQM.
- Upgrade at Workbench 3. The Metal Facemask’s 50% is a big step up on headshots.
- Use the insert slot. If yours rolled one, a metal insert adds 4% bullet protection.
- Remember the wipe. Your helmet and its blueprint go when the server resets. Check when the next force wipe is.
