Hapis Island is the most famous hand-made map in Rust history. For years it was the one map that never changed: the same snowy mountain in the middle, the same ring road, the same Site A, Site B and Launch Site in the same places every wipe. Players learned it by heart, and a lot of them still ask for it by name.
This Hapis Rust guide covers what Hapis Island is, its full history from 2015 to today, why Facepunch retired it, the map layout and monuments, which servers still run Hapis in 2026 (with live player counts), and how to put Hapis on your own server with a community map file.
What Is Hapis Island in Rust?
Hapis Island is a static, hand-made map. Almost every Rust server runs a procedural map, which the game builds from a seed and a size, so every wipe looks different. Hapis was built by hand by a Facepunch level designer, so every wipe was the same island with the same rivers, roads, cliffs and monuments.
Facepunch released it on 30 April 2015, a few months after the game moved from Rust Legacy to the rebuilt “experimental” Rust. Back then the random maps were rough and easy to get lost on, and Hapis gave players a map they could actually learn. Facepunch said it was inspired by the original Rust Legacy map, and it copied the Legacy idea of a big road that loops around the island. It is not the Legacy map itself, though. Our Rust Legacy guide covers the original 2013 island with Big Rad Town and Hacker Valley.
The name is often said to come from the Turkish word hapis, which means prison: a fitting name for an island you cannot leave. Over the years Hapis gained custom monuments you will not find on any procedural map, like Site A, Site B, Outpost B3, the Listening Station and the Loading Dock.

Hapis Island History: 2015 to 2026
Hapis has been added, reworked, pulled, brought back and retired more times than any other map in the game. Here is the full timeline.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 30 April 2015 | Facepunch releases Hapis Island, the first hand-made map for the rebuilt game. |
| 2015 to 2023 | Rustafied runs one of the best known Hapis servers (150 slots by 2019, VIP sold out). |
| 5 April 2018 | “Hapis 8” rework: new Collapsed Tunnel, Junkyard, Sewer Branch, Outpost B3 and Mining Outpost, sewers under Site A, radiation in the Site B tunnels, more buildable land. |
| May 2021 | The World Revamp brings new HDRP art and terrain. Hapis drops out of official rotation. |
| May to June 2022 | An updated Hapis hits the staging branch in May and goes live with the June 2022 update: World Revamp terrain and foliage, the Dome in the desert, new islands in the south west, fishing villages, oil rigs and a ranch. Underwater labs, ziplines and trains were still missing. |
| 5 January 2023 | Facepunch’s devblog says February will be the last month to play Hapis and its servers will be shut down. |
| February 2023 | Official Hapis is retired. Facepunch says the map had fallen many updates behind. |
| 6 July 2023 | The community-run Hapis Community Project ships its “Trains & Caves” update: above-ground trains, a Coaling Tower, a cave system, a Sewer Branch and Collapsed Tunnel, hot springs and new lakes. |
| 2024 to 2026 | Community versions keep Hapis alive, such as Hapis Island V22 (4,096 size) and Hapis Remastered (5,000 size). Rusty Moose still runs a weekly Hapis server. |
Is Hapis Island Still in Rust?
Not officially. In the 5 January 2023 devblog, Facepunch wrote that in February it would be “permanently retiring Hapis Island map” and that Hapis servers would be shut down. Corrosion Hour’s write-up explains why: the team was many updates behind on Hapis and hundreds of hours away from catching up with new features like trains, underwater labs and ziplines. A static map has to be updated by hand every time Rust adds something, and procedural maps get new content for free.
So there is no official Hapis server any more, and Facepunch does not update the map. What you can still play is a community version. Community map makers asked Facepunch for permission to carry Hapis on, and several remakes now exist. They load like any other Rust custom map, so the server owner decides which version you get, how big it is and which monuments it has.
assets/bundled/prefabs/modding/hapis/, such as the Hapis exchange and Hapis weapons machines, which map makers can still place.
Hapis Island Map Layout and Biomes
Hapis is one big island with a snowy mountain range running through the middle and north, forest and tundra on the slopes, a desert in the south and a coast dotted with small islands, rock arches and lighthouses. The main road loops around the mountain, which is why so many fights happen on the road between monuments.
- Snow and mountains: the high ground in the centre and north. Cold, open and great for long sightlines, with Site A, Site B and the Launch Site area under the peaks on most versions.
- Forest and tundra: the slopes and valleys around the ring road. Most bases go here because there is wood, cover and road access.
- Desert: the south of the island, with rock formations, a lake and, since 2022, the Dome.
- Coast and islands: beach spawns, small islands in the south west, sea arches and the Eastern and Western Lighthouses.
Community versions add more on top. Hapis Island V22, for example, lists 2 islands, 7 rivers, 2 lakes and 28 railroad pieces, with biome coverage of about 42% arctic, 34% temperate, 12% tundra and 10% arid. For how a 4,096 or 5,000 map compares with normal servers, see our Rust map sizes guide.
Hapis Island Monuments
Hapis mixes its own custom monuments with normal Rust monuments. The custom ones are what make it feel different. The list below is from the community Hapis Island V22 map, which keeps the monument positions, sizes and angles Facepunch used in 2019 and 2021.
| Custom monument | What it is |
|---|---|
| Site A | A classic Hapis industrial site. Got its own sewers in the 2018 rework. |
| Site B | The other classic site, with tunnels that have radiation since 2018. |
| Site C | A third site on the V22 community map. |
| Outpost B3 | Added in 2018 just south of Site B: barrels, crates, a research table and a small chance of a green crate. |
| Collapsed Tunnel | Built into a mountainside on the northern road, with loot and a recycler; the tunnel is blocked a short way in. |
| Junkyard | Added in the 2018 rework, west of the road:, low tier loot and a recycler in the warehouse. Not the same as the procedural Junkyard with the crane and shredder. |
| Sewer Branch | South of the Launch Site with tunnels and underground rooms. |
| Listening Station, Loading Dock, Refinery | Classic Hapis loot spots along the road. |
| Security Towers (x4), Venting Shaft, Convoy | Smaller roadside spots with a few crates. |
| Eastern and Western Lighthouse | Coastal landmarks with a few crates and a view of the sea. |
| Abandoned Boat, Beached Tugboat, Legacy Offices | Small coastal and nostalgia spots; Legacy Offices dates back to the 2015 map. |
Alongside those you get normal monuments: the Launch Site, Outpost, Arctic Research Base, two fishing villages, two quarries, water wells, the small and Large Oil Rig, an underwater lab and subway entrances on V22, and the Dome in the desert on the 2022 layout. Loot inside the normal monuments works the same as anywhere else, so our Rust monuments guide and loot tables still apply. Exact monuments change from one community version to the next, so check your server’s map before you plan a route.
Hapis Servers in 2026 (Live Data)
Hapis servers are rare now. On 26 October 2026 we searched the roughly 4,000 most populated Rust servers in our live Rust server browser and found 5 with Hapis in the name or map. One of them is a big, busy server and the rest are small community ones.
| Server | Region | Players (26 Oct 2026) | Join (press F1 in Rust) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rusty Moose |Hapis Mondays| | EU | 322 / 350 (24h peak 407) | client.connect 168.100.161.91:28010 |

Rusty Moose Hapis Mondays is the one to join if you want a real Hapis wipe. It is an EU server with a max team of 8 that wipes every Monday, and it fills up fast on wipe day. Our Rusty Moose, Rustafied and Rustoria wipe schedules page tracks it with live stats. Server addresses can change, so if a connect command fails, search “hapis” in the in-game server browser or in our server browser instead.
How to Put Hapis on Your Own Server
Because the official map is retired, the way to run Hapis today is to load a community .map file as a custom map. It takes four steps.
- Pick a community Hapis map. Two popular ones are Hapis Island V22 on Codefling (4,096 size, 45 monuments, made by Bunnyyy and contributors; needs the Harmony RustEdit extension, no Oxide needed) and Hapis Remastered on Lone Design (5,000 size, free, by Nox, with a train system and Nuclear Missile Silo). Read the map page for its own requirements.
- Upload the .map file to a host that gives a permanent direct download link. Players download the map from that link when they join, so it has to stay up all wipe.
- Point the server at it by adding the level URL to your startup line:
+server.levelurl "https://yourhost.com/hapis.map" - Remove the procedural settings. Facepunch’s custom map guide says to take
+server.seedand+server.worldsizeout of your startup line, because they are for procedural maps. Then restart the server.
Once it is running you can check which map is loaded from the server console:
server.levelurlhapisisland.*.sav files surviving the wipe command. Check your server’s save folder and delete the old Hapis save on wipe day. Our how to host a Rust server guide covers the full setup, and our admin commands page has every command you need once it is live.
Tips for Playing Hapis
- Learn it once. The whole point of Hapis is that it does not change. Spend your first wipe learning the road loop, the monuments and the good base spots, and every wipe after that is faster.
- Expect a crowd at the classics. Everyone knows where Site A, Site B and the Launch Site are, so they get contested the moment the server wipes. Loot the smaller roadside spots first and hit the big ones later.
- Dress for the mountain. The central peaks are snow biome. Bring warm clothes or a hoodie and pants before you climb, or the cold will drain your health. A snowmobile (see our Rust vehicles guide) helps if your server has them.
- Build where the wood is. The forest valleys on the ring road give wood, cover and quick road access. Bare snow and desert are easy to spot from far away.
- Use the coast. Beach spawns and the south west islands are quieter. A boat lets you loot the lighthouses and slip past road campers.
- Check the wipe day. Hapis servers run their own schedules. Rusty Moose wipes Hapis every Monday, separate from the monthly Rust force wipe, so check our countdown and the server’s info before you plan a wipe night.
Hapis Island FAQ
What is Hapis Island in Rust?
Hapis Island is a hand-made Rust map that Facepunch released on 30 April 2015. Unlike procedural maps it is the same every wipe, with a snowy central mountain, a ring road and custom monuments like Site A, Site B and Outpost B3.
Is Hapis Island still in Rust?
Not officially. Facepunch retired Hapis Island in February 2023 and shut down its official Hapis servers. Community map makers have kept it alive as custom maps, so you can still play Hapis on community servers such as Rusty Moose Hapis Mondays.
Why was Hapis Island removed from Rust?
Facepunch said the map had fallen many updates behind. A hand-made map has to be updated by hand for every new feature, such as trains, underwater labs and ziplines, while procedural maps get new content automatically, so the team retired it in February 2023.
Is Hapis Island the Rust Legacy map?
No. Hapis was made in 2015 for the rebuilt version of Rust. Facepunch said it was inspired by the original Rust Legacy map, and it borrowed the Legacy ring road idea, but it is a different island.
When was Hapis Island added to Rust?
Hapis Island came out on 30 April 2015. It got a big rework in April 2018, left official rotation after the May 2021 World Revamp, came back with the June 2022 update and was retired in February 2023.
How big is Hapis Island?
Popular community versions are 4,096 (Hapis Island V22) or 5,000 (Hapis Remastered). Most official and community procedural servers sit between 3,500 and 4,500, so Hapis plays like a normal to large map.
What servers have Hapis Island?
The biggest is Rusty Moose Hapis Mondays, an EU server with a max team of 8 that wipes every Monday. On 26 October 2026 it had 322 of 350 players. We found 4 other small community Hapis servers in the EU and US with under 10 players each.
How do I put Hapis Island on my Rust server?
Download a community Hapis .map file, upload it to a direct download link, add +server.levelurl with that link to your startup line, remove +server.seed and +server.worldsize, and restart. Follow the map page for any extensions it needs, such as the Harmony RustEdit extension.
What monuments are on Hapis Island?
Custom Hapis monuments include Site A, Site B, Site C, Outpost B3, the Listening Station, Loading Dock, Refinery, Collapsed Tunnel, Sewer Branch, Security Towers and two lighthouses. It also has normal monuments like the Launch Site, Outpost, Arctic Research Base, fishing villages and the oil rigs, depending on the version.
What does Hapis mean?
Hapis is the Turkish word for prison, which is the most common explanation for the name of an island you cannot leave. Facepunch never gave an official meaning.
