Snow Jacket Rust: Stats, Craft Cost, Cold Protection & Where to Buy (2026)

Rust clothing guide, 2026

The Snow Jacket is the warmest jacket you can craft in Rust. It costs 60 cloth and 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 1, gives 30% cold protection plus 20% bullet and 30% melee protection, and Outpost sells it for only 20 scrap. The catch most guides miss: it fills both chest layers, so you cannot wear a hoodie or t-shirt under it.

This guide covers the Snow Jacket’s craft cost and blueprint, its exact protection stats, how the two-layer rule changes your kit, how it compares with the Jacket, Road Sign Jacket, Metal Chest Plate and Hide Poncho, where to buy or loot one, what a recycler gives back and when you should wear it.

TL;DR The Snow Jacket (jacket.snow) crafts from 60 cloth + 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 1 (15 seconds). The blueprint is 20 scrap at a research table or 75 scrap in total on the Workbench 1 tech tree. It gives 20% projectile, 30% melee, 20% bite, 20% radiation and 30% cold protection and cannot be repaired. It takes the shirt layer and the outer chest layer, so nothing goes under it. Buy one at the Outpost clothing vending machine for 20 scrap, or loot one from a supply drop (about 44%). A monument recycler returns 30 cloth and a 50% chance of a sewing kit.

What Is the Snow Jacket in Rust?

The Snow Jacket is a thick red parka with grey shoulder panels. It has been in the game since September 2014, and its in-game description sums it up: “A thick, high visibility Jacket. It will help keep you warm in any climate.” High visibility is the honest part. That bright red stands out against snow, grass and sand alike.

What makes it different from the plain Jacket is where it sits on your body. Rust gives the chest two layers: a shirt layer for a hoodie, t-shirt or shirt, and an outer layer for a jacket or chest armor. Most pieces use one of them. The Snow Jacket uses both, the same way the Heavy Plate Jacket does. You get one piece of warm clothing on your chest and nothing else.

That makes it a specialist item. It is the best thing you can wear for the cold without going to a full Arctic Suit, and it is a poor choice for a straight gunfight. Our Rust clothing guide shows how it fits next to every other piece.

How to Craft a Snow Jacket in Rust

How to craft a Snow Jacket in Rust: 60 cloth plus 1 sewing kit makes 1 Snow Jacket at a Workbench Level 1 in 15 seconds, 7.5 at Workbench 2, 3.75 at Workbench 3, 80 cloth and 3 rope in raw materials
Sixty cloth and one sewing kit at a Workbench 1.
  1. Learn the blueprint. Research a bought or looted Snow Jacket for 20 scrap, or unlock it on the tech tree (next section).
  2. Get 60 cloth. Hemp, animals and recycled junk all give cloth. Our Rust cloth guide has the fastest routes.
  3. Get 1 sewing kit. A sewing kit is 20 cloth and 3 rope, but crafting one needs a Workbench 3. Early on you loot them from barrels and Tunnel Dwellers or recycle tactical gloves.
  4. Stand at a Workbench 1. Any Workbench Level 1 or higher works. The craft takes 15 seconds, 7.5 at a Workbench 2 and 3.75 at a Workbench 3.
Tip The sewing kit is the real price. The Snow Jacket needs one, the plain Jacket two and a Metal Chest Plate eight. If kits are short, buy the Snow Jacket for 20 scrap at Outpost instead of crafting it.

Snow Jacket Blueprint: Research or Tech Tree

There are two ways to learn it:

  • Research table: 20 scrap. Put any Snow Jacket and 20 scrap in a research table. Because Outpost sells it for 20 scrap, you can learn it for 35 scrap in total within minutes of reaching the safe zone.
  • Workbench 1 tech tree: 75 scrap. The node itself is cheap, but you have to unlock the nodes before it first. Only take this route if you want the pieces on the way. Our Rust tech tree guide lists every price.

Research is the better deal by a mile. Buy one, research it, and every jacket after that costs only cloth and a kit.

Snow Jacket Protection: What 30% Cold Means

Rust Snow Jacket protection stats: 30% cold, 30% melee, 20% projectile, 20% bite and 20% radiation on the chest, cannot be repaired
Cold and melee lead. Bullets come third.

Here is what each number does for you:

  • Cold 30%. The highest of any jacket, three times the plain Jacket’s 10%. Metal armor goes the other way: the chest plate and road sign jacket are -8% each. In the snow biome at night that difference is the line between losing health to the cold and not.
  • Melee 30%. Better than the Jacket, Road Sign Jacket or Metal Chest Plate. Good against spears and wipe-day rock fights.
  • Projectile 20%. Same as the Road Sign Jacket, but you lose the hoodie under it, so your total chest bullet protection stays at 20%.
  • Bite 20%. Helps against wolves and the polar bears that roam the snow.
  • Radiation 20%. Useful for low rad monuments. For real rads you still need a hazmat suit, which replaces your whole outfit anyway.

One more thing: the Snow Jacket cannot be repaired. When it wears out, recycle it or throw it away. At 20 scrap a jacket, that is rarely a problem.

Can You Wear a Hoodie Under a Snow Jacket?

Snow Jacket clothing layers in Rust: the Snow Jacket alone gives 20% bullet, 30% melee and 30% cold for 1 sewing kit, a hoodie plus jacket gives 35% bullet, 35% melee and 18% cold for 3 kits, a hoodie plus metal chest plate gives 45% bullet
The Snow Jacket takes both chest layers on its own.

No. The Snow Jacket fills the chest shirt layer and the outer chest layer at once, so a hoodie, t-shirt, longsleeve, shirt or BDU shirt cannot go under it. Put one on and the game takes off the other. Facepunch’s own item data lists it on both layers, and it is the main reason the Snow Jacket is not a PvP piece.

That changes the maths:

Chest setupBulletMeleeColdSewing kits
Snow Jacket alone20%30%+30%1
Hoodie + Jacket35%35%+18%3
Hoodie + Road Sign Jacket40%40%0%3
Hoodie + Metal Chest Plate45%35%0%9

So the Snow Jacket only wins on cold and on cost. The moment you have a hoodie and anything on top of it, you have more bullet protection. In the snow, that trade is worth it. Everywhere else, it usually is not.

Snow Jacket vs Jacket, Road Sign Jacket, Chest Plate and Poncho

Snow Jacket vs other Rust chest pieces: Snow Jacket 20% bullet 30% melee +30% cold, Jacket 15% 20% +10%, Road Sign Jacket 20% 25% -8%, Metal Chest Plate 25% 20% -8%, Hide Poncho 10% 40% +8%
Each piece on its own. Only the Snow Jacket blocks the shirt layer.

On paper the Snow Jacket beats the plain Jacket on every stat for one fewer sewing kit. In practice the Jacket is the better PvP buy, because it lets a hoodie stack under it for 35% bullets. Pick the Snow Jacket when warmth matters more than bullets: the snow biome, cold nights and arctic monuments. Every chest piece and its full stats are in our Rust armor guide.

What Does a Snow Jacket Recycle Into?

Recycling a Snow Jacket in Rust: a monument recycler returns 30 cloth and a 50% chance of a sewing kit, grid powered 36 cloth, Power Plant red recycler 45 cloth, safe zone 24 cloth
One Snow Jacket in, up to 45 cloth out.

Safe zone (40%)2440%
Monument (50%)3050%
Grid powered (60%)3660%
Power Plant red recycler (75%)4575%

There is no scrap in it. A spare Snow Jacket is still one of the better cloth items to recycle, and the sewing kit chance is the real prize early in a wipe. How each machine works is in our Rust recycler guide.

Snow Jacket Skins

The Snow Jacket has a small set of Workshop skins, about nine on the market. The cheapest sell for around 50 cents, while older ones like the 60’s Army Jacket and Telogreika Jacket go for $10 to $15. Names you will see include the No Mercy Snow Jacket, Deep Sea Captain Jacket, Training Snow Jacket, Christmas Snow Jacket, Fireman’s Jacket and Salvaged Shirt, Coat and Tie. A skin changes the look only, so a darker skin is a cheap way to get rid of that bright red. Live prices for every one are in our Rust outfit builder.

Rust Snow Jacket Tips

Rust Snow Jacket tips: add a balaclava, wear boots and pants, no hoodie under it, not for fights, buy it at Outpost for 20 scrap, Arctic Suit is the best cold protection
Wear it for the cold, swap it for the fight.
  • Build a snow kit around it. Balaclava, Snow Jacket, pants, boots and tactical gloves. Pants and boots add 8% cold each, and none of it carries a cold penalty.
  • Do not plan a hoodie under it. It will not fit. If you want a hoodie, wear the plain Jacket or armor on top instead.
  • Swap it before a fight. 20% chest bullet protection is low. Keep a hoodie and a chest plate or road sign jacket in your bag and change when you hear shots.
  • Wear it to the Arctic Research Base. The cold chips at you the whole time at the Arctic Research Base. The Snow Jacket fixes most of it.
  • Buy, research, then craft. 20 scrap at Outpost plus 20 scrap at a research table unlocks the blueprint for good.
  • Mind the red. It is easy to spot from far away. Crouch, use cover, or put a darker skin on it.
  • Use an Arctic Suit for long cold trips. It covers your whole body. The Snow Jacket is the cheap middle ground.

You can plan a full snow outfit, skins included, in our Rust outfit builder, and keep the next Rust force wipe date in mind so you know how long your kit has to last.

For the full winter look, the Snowman Helmet (10 cloth, no workbench, Steam item) adds 10% cold and 20% bullet protection on the head.
