The Workbench Level 2, often called the tier 2 workbench, is the bench that turns a starter base into a real one. It unlocks the mid game tech tree, the semi-auto rifle, the Thompson, garage doors, auto turrets and the large furnace, and it is the first bench that needs something you can only get by running monuments.
This Workbench Level 2 Rust guide covers the exact 2026 craft cost, where to find the Basic Blueprint Fragments it needs, how it compares with the Workbench 1 and 3, what the Workbench 2 tech tree costs in scrap, what you can craft at it, the new workbench upgrades, and how to protect it once it is down.
What Is the Workbench Level 2 in Rust?
The Workbench Level 2 is the middle of the three numbered workbenches. Like the other two, it is a deployable you place on a foundation or floor. While you stand near it, you can craft any recipe that needs a Workbench 2 or lower, and you can open its own branch of the tech tree to buy blueprints with scrap.
It is the step where most of the useful mid game gear opens up. Facepunch’s own wiki describes it as the bench that allows you to craft items requiring workbench level 2, and that list includes the semi-auto rifle, the Thompson, the garage door, the auto turret and the large furnace.
A Workbench 2 also counts as a Workbench 1. You can pick up or ignore your old bench once the Level 2 is down, and every Workbench 1 item crafts faster at it.

How to Craft a Workbench Level 2
- Place a Workbench 1. It costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, and every player knows it from spawn.
- Gather the materials. 500 metal fragments and 20 high quality metal. One evening of mining metal nodes and a furnace covers both.
- Get 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments. This is the real gate. See the next section for where they spawn.
- Craft it at the Workbench 1. The craft takes 45 seconds, then place it like any other deployable.
How the recipe changed. For years the Workbench 2 cost 500 metal fragments, 20 HQM and 500 scrap. The Meta Shift update on October 2, 2025 added 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments and cut the scrap to 250. Then the Pivot or Die update on November 6, 2025 removed scrap from all three workbench recipes. Old guides that still list scrap are out of date.
Where to Find Basic Blueprint Fragments
Basic Blueprint Fragments come from loot. The guaranteed spawns are in monument puzzle rooms:
- Green card puzzle rooms: 1 fragment, every time.
- Blue card puzzle rooms: 2 fragments, next to the red keycard. That is the Train Yard, Water Treatment Plant, Power Plant, Airfield and the other blue card monuments.
- Random drops: airdrops, military crates, large underwater crates, junkpile scientists and roadside metal detecting can all roll one.
The fastest route for a fresh team is one green card room and one or two blue card rooms. That gives you five fragments and a red keycard in the same run, and the red card is your path toward the Advanced Fragments a Workbench 3 needs. Spare Basic Fragments are worth keeping: 20 of them convert into 1 Advanced Fragment. Our Rust blueprints guide covers both fragment types in detail, and the Rust monuments guide lists every puzzle room.
Workbench 1 vs Workbench 2 vs Workbench 3
| Bench | Craft cost | Fragments | Tech tree | Key unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workbench 1 | 500 Wood, 100 Metal Fragments | None | ~3,000 scrap, about 125 nodes | Starter guns, tools, satchels, research table |
| Workbench 2 | 500 Metal Fragments, 20 HQM | 5 Basic | ~5,520 scrap, about 133 nodes | SAR, Thompson, garage door, auto turret, large furnace, rocket launcher |
| Workbench 3 | 1,000 Metal Fragments, 100 HQM | 5 Advanced | ~2,300 scrap, about 27 nodes | AK, bolt action rifle, C4, armored doors, metal facemask |
The Workbench 2 tree is the biggest of the three by a long way, which is why most of a team’s scrap in the first days of a wipe goes into it. You cannot skip it either: a Workbench 3 is crafted at a Workbench 2.
Workbench 2 Tech Tree Costs
Since November 2025, each tech tree node costs the same as researching it: 15, 30, 60 or 120 scrap by rarity. The catch is that you can only unlock a node next to one you already own, so the real price is the whole path. These are the totals from an empty Workbench 2 tree:
| Target | Path cost from empty | Why you want it |
|---|---|---|
| Garage door | 240 scrap | 600 HP for 300 frags and 2 gears |
| Large furnace | 390 scrap | Smelts in bulk |
| Auto turret | 555 scrap | Base defence |
| Thompson | 810 scrap | Strong mid game SMG |
| Semi-auto rifle | 930 scrap | The Workbench 2 rifle |
| Rocket launcher | 1,110 scrap | Raiding |
If you already have the item from loot, a research table is cheaper because you only pay for that one blueprint. The tech tree wins when you want the items along the path too. Need more scrap? See our Rust scrap guide.
What You Can Craft at a Workbench Level 2
Once you have the blueprints, these are some of the most used Workbench 2 crafts:
- Guns: Semi-Auto Rifle, Thompson, Custom SMG and the Semi-Auto Pistol.
- Base building: garage door, ladder hatch, strengthened glass window and high external stone walls.
- Defence and raiding: auto turret and the rocket launcher.
- Farming: large furnace, electric furnace and the small oil refinery.
Crafting speed. A higher bench crafts lower tier items faster. Workbench 1 recipes take roughly half their normal time at a Workbench 2, which adds up fast when you are crafting ammo, meds and building parts in bulk.
Workbench Upgrades on a Workbench Level 2
The May 2026 update added workbench upgrades: loot items you slot into a bench to change how it works. Each bench takes one of each kind, so you cannot stack two of the same upgrade.
- Salvage: 20% off tech tree unlocks at that bench. On the big Workbench 2 tree this saves the most scrap.
- Prototype: unlock any node directly, without the path, for double its price.
- Reinforced: makes the bench much tougher against explosives.
- Range, Efficiency, Recycle Bin, Comfort, Defensive: a bigger crafting radius, a chance of bonus items, a refund of up to 10% of crafting costs, comfort around the bench, and armor slots on crafted clothing.
Our tech tree guide shows how Salvage and Prototype change the scrap math on each path.
Workbench Level 2 Tips
- Plan one monument run for it. A green card room plus a blue card room is 3 fragments in one trip, and a second blue room finishes the job.
- Keep 20 HQM aside. It is easy to spend early HQM on tools and then stall on the bench.
- Put it deep inside. A Workbench 2 has only 500 HP and 2 C4 removes it. Place it behind your tool cupboard and loot, not in the first room a raider reaches.
- Unlock the garage door first. At 240 scrap from an empty tree it is the cheapest big upgrade to your base’s defence.
- Watch the wipe. The bench, your blueprints and your fragments all reset on a blueprint wipe. Check when the next force wipe is before you sink scrap into the tree late in the month, and use the raid calculator to plan how you protect it.
Workbench Level 2 FAQ
How much does a Workbench Level 2 cost in Rust?
A Workbench Level 2 costs 500 metal fragments, 20 high quality metal and 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments. It is crafted at a Workbench 1 and takes 45 seconds.
Does the Workbench Level 2 still cost scrap?
No. Scrap was removed from all workbench recipes in the Pivot or Die update on November 6, 2025. Before that it cost 500 scrap, then 250 scrap after the Meta Shift update in October 2025.
Where do you get Basic Blueprint Fragments in Rust?
Every green card puzzle room has 1 Basic Blueprint Fragment and every blue card puzzle room has 2, next to the red keycard. They can also drop from airdrops, military crates, large underwater crates, junkpile scientists and roadside metal detecting.
How much HP does a Workbench Level 2 have?
A Workbench Level 2 has 500 HP. It takes 2 C4 or about 4 rockets to destroy.
How much scrap is the Workbench 2 tech tree?
Unlocking every node on the Workbench 2 tech tree costs about 5,520 scrap across roughly 133 nodes. Each node costs 15, 30, 60 or 120 scrap by rarity.
Do you need a Workbench 1 to make a Workbench 2?
Yes. The Workbench Level 2 is crafted while standing at a Workbench 1. After that, the Workbench 2 covers every Workbench 1 recipe too, so you do not need to keep both.
What do you get from recycling a Workbench Level 2?
Recycling a Workbench Level 2 returns 300 metal fragments, 12 high quality metal and 3 Basic Blueprint Fragments.
What is the Workbench Level 2 item ID?
The Workbench Level 2 shortname is workbench2 and its item ID is -41896755.
