The Workbench Level 3, often called the tier 3 workbench, is the last bench in Rust and the one every group is racing toward. It is where the AK, the bolt action rifle, the MP5A4, C4, rockets, armored doors and the metal facemask are crafted, and it is gated behind the rarest crafting item in the game: the Advanced Blueprint Fragment.
This Workbench Level 3 Rust guide covers the exact 2026 craft cost, every place to find Advanced Blueprint Fragments, how it compares with the Workbench 1 and 2, what the Workbench 3 tech tree costs in scrap, what you can craft at it, how much it takes to destroy, and how to protect it once it is down.

What Is the Workbench Level 3 in Rust?
The Workbench Level 3 is the highest of the three numbered workbenches. You place it on a foundation or floor like any deployable, and while you stand near it you can craft every recipe in the game that needs a workbench. It also opens the smallest but most valuable branch of the tech tree, where the endgame guns, armor and explosives live.
Facepunch describes it as the bench that lets you craft items requiring workbench level 3. In practice that means the AK, the bolt action rifle, the MP5A4, C4, rockets, explosive ammo, the armored door and the metal facemask.
A Workbench 3 also counts as a Workbench 1 and 2. Once it is down you do not need the lower benches for crafting, and every lower tier recipe crafts much faster at it.

How to Craft a Workbench Level 3
- Have a Workbench 2. You cannot skip it. Our Workbench Level 2 guide covers its 500 frags, 20 HQM and 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments.
- Gather the metal. 1,000 metal fragments is about two metal nodes. The 100 high quality metal is the slower part: farm HQM nodes, recycle components, or run a quarry.
- Get 5 Advanced Blueprint Fragments. This is the real gate. See the next section for every source.
- Craft it at the Workbench 2. The craft takes 60 seconds. Place it somewhere deep in the base before you do anything else.
How the recipe changed. For years the Workbench 3 cost 1,000 metal fragments, 100 HQM and 1,250 scrap. The Meta Shift update on October 2, 2025 added 5 Advanced Blueprint Fragments and cut the scrap to 500. The Pivot or Die update on November 6, 2025 then removed scrap from all three workbench recipes. Any guide that still lists 1,250 or 500 scrap is out of date.
Where to Find Advanced Blueprint Fragments
Advanced Blueprint Fragments only come from the top tier of loot. These are the sources worth planning around:
- Hackable locked crates: 2 Advanced Fragments, guaranteed, in every locked crate. That covers the crates at Small and Large Oil Rig, Cargo Ship, Chinook drops and the locked crates that spawn at monuments.
- Red card rooms: the elite loot rooms at Launch Site, Military Tunnels, the Missile Silo (a full red card puzzle since the Meta Shift) and red door Underwater Labs.
- Elite crates: a chance of a pair of Advanced Fragments, so every elite crate you open is worth checking.
- Trading up: 20 Basic Blueprint Fragments convert into 1 Advanced Fragment. It is slow, but spare Basics from green and blue card rooms are never wasted.
The usual route is a blue card run that ends with a red keycard, then a red card room or a locked crate. Three locked crates give you 6 fragments, one more than the bench needs. Our Rust blueprints guide covers both fragment types, and the Rust monuments guide lists every puzzle room.
Workbench 1 vs Workbench 2 vs Workbench 3
| Bench | Craft cost | Fragments | Tech tree | Key unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workbench 1 | 500 Wood, 100 Metal Fragments | None | ~3,000 scrap, about 125 nodes | Starter guns, tools, satchels, research table |
| Workbench 2 | 500 Metal Fragments, 20 HQM | 5 Basic | ~5,520 scrap, about 133 nodes | SAR, Thompson, garage door, auto turret, large furnace |
| Workbench 3 | 1,000 Metal Fragments, 100 HQM | 5 Advanced | ~2,300 scrap, about 27 nodes | AK, bolt action rifle, MP5A4, C4, rockets, armored doors, metal facemask |
The Workbench 3 tree is the smallest of the three, but almost every node on it is a very rare item at 120 scrap. That is why most groups research what they loot and only tech tree one or two key paths.
Workbench 3 Tech Tree Costs
Since November 2025, each tech tree node costs the same as researching it: 15, 30, 60 or 120 scrap by rarity, and most Workbench 3 nodes sit at 120. You can only unlock a node next to one you already own, so the real price is the whole path. These are the totals from an empty Workbench 3 tree:
| Target | Path cost from empty | Why you want it |
|---|---|---|
| Metal facemask | 540 scrap | Best head armor |
| C4 | 720 scrap | Raiding |
| AK | 780 scrap (9 nodes) | The best craftable rifle |
| Bolt action rifle | 900 scrap | The craftable sniper |
| Whole Workbench 3 tree | about 2,300 scrap | Rarely worth it |
Nodes you already own on the way are not charged again, so the second path is always cheaper than the first. If you already have the item from loot, a research table costs only 120 scrap for that blueprint. Short on scrap? See our Rust scrap guide.
What You Can Craft at a Workbench Level 3
Once you have the blueprints, these are the Workbench 3 crafts that decide fights and raids:
- Guns: Assault Rifle, Bolt Action Rifle and MP5A4.
- Raiding: Timed Explosive Charge (C4), rockets and explosive 5.56 ammo.
- Armor: metal facemask and metal chest plate.
- Base building: armored door, armored double door and the armored ladder hatch.
Crafting speed. A higher bench crafts lower tier items faster, up to about 75 percent faster for Workbench 1 recipes at a Workbench 3. Bulk ammo, meds and building parts are much quicker here than anywhere else in your base.
How Much to Destroy and Recycle a Workbench Level 3
A Workbench 3 has 750 HP. That is 3 C4 or 6 rockets, so a raiding group that gets inside will usually take it out. Losing it hurts more than the metal, because the 5 Advanced Fragments are gone with it.
Recycling a Workbench 3 at a monument recycler returns 600 metal fragments, 60 HQM and 3 Advanced Blueprint Fragments. A safe zone recycler returns only 400 frags, 40 HQM and 2 fragments. Recycling a looted bench is a decent head start on your own, but never recycle the one you rely on.
The May 2026 workbench upgrades help here: the Reinforced upgrade makes a bench much tougher against explosives, Salvage takes 20% off tech tree unlocks, and Prototype lets you unlock any node directly for double its price, which is handy on a tree where you only want one or two items.
Workbench Level 3 Tips
- Plan around locked crates. Two locked crates or one oil rig crate run gets you most of the way, and a Chinook crate is the same 2 fragments.
- Save 100 HQM early. HQM disappears into tools and armor. Put 100 aside the moment you have your Workbench 2.
- Hide it behind your best doors. At 750 HP and 3 C4 it is an easy target. Place it deep inside behind armored doors and your tool cupboard.
- Research before you tech tree. A looted AK is 120 scrap to research. The tech tree path is 780.
- Keep spare Basic Fragments. 20 of them trade up into 1 Advanced Fragment if you are one short.
- Watch the wipe. The bench, your blueprints and your fragments all reset on a blueprint wipe. Check when the next force wipe is before you spend big late in the month, and use the raid calculator to plan how you protect it.
Workbench Level 3 FAQ
How much does a Workbench Level 3 cost in Rust?
A Workbench Level 3 costs 1,000 metal fragments, 100 high quality metal and 5 Advanced Blueprint Fragments. It is crafted at a Workbench Level 2 and takes 60 seconds.
Does the Workbench Level 3 still cost scrap?
No. Scrap was removed from all workbench recipes in the Pivot or Die update on November 6, 2025. Before that it cost 1,250 scrap, then 500 scrap after the Meta Shift update in October 2025.
Where do you get Advanced Blueprint Fragments in Rust?
Every hackable locked crate has 2 Advanced Blueprint Fragments, including the crates at the oil rigs, Cargo Ship and Chinook drops. They also come from red card rooms at Launch Site, Military Tunnels, the Missile Silo and red door Underwater Labs, from elite crates by chance, and from trading 20 Basic Blueprint Fragments for 1 Advanced.
How much HP does a Workbench Level 3 have?
A Workbench Level 3 has 750 HP. It takes 3 C4 or 6 rockets to destroy.
How much scrap is the Workbench 3 tech tree?
Unlocking every node on the Workbench 3 tech tree costs about 2,300 scrap across roughly 27 nodes. Most nodes cost 120 scrap. The AK path from an empty tree is 780 scrap and the C4 path is about 720.
Do you need a Workbench 2 to make a Workbench 3?
Yes. The Workbench Level 3 is crafted while standing at a Workbench Level 2. After that, the Workbench 3 covers every Workbench 1 and 2 recipe too.
What do you get from recycling a Workbench Level 3?
At a monument recycler a Workbench Level 3 returns 600 metal fragments, 60 high quality metal and 3 Advanced Blueprint Fragments. A safe zone recycler returns 400 metal fragments, 40 HQM and 2 Advanced Blueprint Fragments.
What is the Workbench Level 3 item ID?
The Workbench Level 3 shortname is workbench3 and its item ID is -1607980696.
