Rust Large Wood Box & Storage Boxes: Slots, Cost, HP & How to Destroy (2026)

Rust base building guide, 2026

Every base in Rust ends the same way: a room full of boxes. The Large Wood Box is the one you will craft more than any other item in the game, because it is cheap, known from spawn and holds almost three times as much as the small box next to it.

This Rust large wood box guide covers every storage box in the game: the recipe, slots and health of the Large Wood Box and Wood Storage Box, how they compare with the Locker, Storage Barrels and Small Stash, how to lock them, the Storage Box Pack skins, exactly what it takes to destroy one, and how to hook boxes up to conveyors and Rust+.

TL;DR The Large Wood Box costs 250 wood and 50 metal fragments, needs no workbench and is a default blueprint. It holds 48 slots and has 300 HP. The Wood Storage Box (small box) costs 100 wood, holds 18 slots and has 150 HP. Both take a Code Lock or Key Lock and add nothing to your upkeep. Never use explosives on one: a single molotov or about 22 seconds with a hatchet breaks a large box.

What Is the Large Wood Box in Rust?

The Large Wood Box is a deployable chest that “stores up to 48 items”, as the in-game description puts it. In the game files it is box.wooden.large with item ID 833533164 (see our Rust item IDs list). You place it on any floor or foundation, open it with E, and lock it like a door.

It is the backbone of every loot room. Sulfur, scrap, components, guns, kits, meds: it all ends up in large boxes, usually lined up against the walls of the most protected room in your base. Rust has other containers, but none of them match the large box on cost per slot, which is why it shows up in every base design from a solo 2×2 to a clan compound.

Its little brother is the Wood Storage Box, usually just called the small box. It holds 18 items for 100 wood, so it is what you place in the first ten minutes of a wipe, before you have metal fragments to spare.

How to Craft a Large Wood Box

Rust storage box recipes: Large Wood Box from 250 wood and 50 metal fragments, Wood Storage Box from 100 wood, Small Stash from 10 cloth, all with no workbench
Both wood boxes are default blueprints with no workbench.

Both wood boxes are known by default, so you never research them and you can craft them anywhere. The only thing standing between you and a loot room is wood and a few metal fragments.

Crafting is fast: a few seconds next to a workbench, a little longer by hand. Stack size is 1, so you carry and place them one at a time. If you are setting up a base on day one, a good rule is small boxes first, large boxes as soon as you have a furnace running. Once metal fragments are flowing, there is no reason to place another small box: the large box costs 2.5 times the wood for 2.7 times the storage.

Every Storage Box in Rust Compared

Rust storage containers compared: Large Wood Box 48 slots, Wood Storage Box 18 slots, Locker 42 slots, Storage Barrel 48 slots with no lock and Small Stash 6 slots

Storage Barrels are the only real alternative to the large box for bulk storage. The vertical and horizontal barrels (plus the Wicker and Bamboo versions) hold the same 48 items, but they come from the in-game item store, cost a little more to craft, and cannot be locked. That makes them fine deep inside a locked loot room and a bad idea anywhere a raider can reach without breaking a door.

The Small Stash is the opposite: tiny, but hidden. Place it, then look at it and choose to hide it, and it sinks into the ground. To dig it back up, aim at the spot where you buried it and it reveals itself. A stash of 6 slots outside your base with a kit, some meds and a code is a cheap insurance policy if you get raided.

How to Lock a Storage Box

Locking storage boxes in Rust: Code Lock for 100 metal fragments, Key Lock for 75 wood, boxes add nothing to tool cupboard upkeep and storage barrels cannot be locked
Both wood boxes take a Code Lock or a Key Lock.

Both the Large Wood Box and the Wood Storage Box have a lock slot. Hold the lock, aim at the front of the box and place it, then set the code. A Code Lock costs 100 metal fragments and is the standard choice; a Key Lock costs 75 wood but needs a physical key for every player.

  • Lock boxes outside your main loot room. A box by a shooting floor or in an airlock is the first thing a door camper loots.
  • Inside a sealed loot room, locks are optional. Once a raider is in your core, a lock on a 300 HP box buys seconds. Spend the frags on doors.
  • Use the Tool Cupboard for the important stuff. Your TC needs its own Code Lock. If it is unlocked, a raider can authorise and pick up everything you own.

Boxes do not add to your upkeep. Upkeep is charged on building blocks, so you can fill a loot room with large boxes and your upkeep cost stays the same. Outside the range of a Tool Cupboard, boxes slowly decay like any other deployable.

Large Wood Box Skins and the Storage Box Pack

Rust Storage Box Pack: 16 labelled Large Wood Box skins for ammo, armor, charcoal, clothing, comps, explosives, food, guns, meds, metal, ore, scrap, stone, sulfur, tools and wood, priced at 17.99 dollars
The 16 labelled skins from the Storage Box Pack.

The Large Wood Box is one of the most skinned items in the game. The biggest addition was the Storage Box Pack, released on 5 March 2026 for $17.99. It gives you 16 labelled large box skins: Ammo, Armor, Charcoal, Clothing, Comps, Explosives, Food, Guns, Meds, Metal, Ore, Scrap, Stone, Sulfur, Tools and Wood. The labels glow, so you can find your sulfur box in a dark loot room without a flashlight.

They are cosmetic only. A skinned box still holds 48 items, still has 300 HP and still takes a Code Lock. The pack is not tradable. Free large box skins also turn up as watch-time rewards; see our Rust Twitch drops and Kick drops guides for the current rounds, and our Rust skins guide for how skins work.

How to Destroy a Storage Box in Rust

How to destroy a storage box in Rust: small box and large box raid costs with molotov, hatchet, jackhammer, F1 grenade, beancan, fire arrows, explosive ammo, satchel charge, rocket and C4
Explosives are a waste on boxes. Melee and fire do the job for free.

Boxes are weak on purpose. A Wood Storage Box has 150 HP and a Large Wood Box 300 HP, and both are wood, so fire and melee shred them. This matters when you raid a base and the loot room has a box you cannot open, and when you clear a base that has been abandoned outside your TC.

Careful Destroying a box destroys a share of what is inside it. Some items drop in a loot bag, the rest are gone. If you can get the code, or wait for the owner to log off a box in a room you already own, that beats breaking it.

The Salvaged Hammer is another free option at about 10 seconds a large box. For the doors and walls you have to get through first, use our Rust raid calculator or the eco raid calculator.

Storage Boxes, Conveyors and Rust+

Rust storage box automation: Storage Adaptors fit 4 on a large box and 2 on a small box, the Industrial Conveyor moves and filters items, and the Storage Monitor attaches to a large box or tool cupboard
The large box is the hub of every automated loot room.

Boxes are also where Rust’s industrial system starts. A Storage Adaptor snaps onto a container so pipes can connect to it: a Large Wood Box takes up to 4 adaptors and a Wood Storage Box 2. Run an Industrial Conveyor between a dump box and your sorted boxes, set filters, and every run ends with sulfur in the sulfur box and scrap in the scrap box without you touching a slot.

The Storage Monitor only fits a Large Wood Box or a Tool Cupboard. Power it with 1 rW, pair it with the Rust+ app, and you can see what is inside the box from your phone, or get an alert when it is emptied. Our Rust electricity guide covers the power side.

Recycle, Repair and Pick Up

Recycling a Large Wood Box in Rust returns 150 wood and 30 metal fragments, or 100 wood and 20 frags in a safe zone; an empty box can be picked up with a hammer
Picking a box up is free, recycling one is not.
BoxMonument recycler (60%)Safe zone recycler (40%)
Large Wood Box150 wood, 30 metal fragments100 wood, 20 metal fragments
Wood Storage Box60 wood40 wood

There is rarely a reason to recycle a box. To move one, empty it and pick it up with a hammer while you have building privilege: you get the whole box back for free. A damaged box can be repaired with a hammer for a share of its wood and fragment cost.

Storage Box Tips

Tip Spread your loot. One loot room is one raid away from empty. A second box room behind a different door, or a buried stash outside, keeps you alive after a wipe-ending raid.
  • Label by contents. Use the Storage Box Pack skins or small signs so the whole team knows where things go.
  • Keep raid sulfur deep. Raiders look for the explosives box first. Put it in the room that takes the most rockets to reach; our base builder shows the raid cost of each layer.
  • Leave space for a dump box. One small box by the door where everyone empties their inventory, then sort it later or let a conveyor do it.
  • Don’t lock barrels. You can’t. Keep them behind a locked door.
  • Check the wipe date. Everything in your boxes disappears on force wipe. See when the next one is on our Rust force wipe countdown.

Rust Large Wood Box FAQ

How many slots does a large wood box have in Rust?

A Large Wood Box has 48 slots. The small Wood Storage Box has 18, a Locker 42 and a Small Stash 6.

How do you make a large wood box in Rust?

Craft it from 250 wood and 50 metal fragments. It is a default blueprint and needs no workbench, so you can make one from the start of a wipe.

How much health does a large wood box have?

A Large Wood Box has 300 HP and a Wood Storage Box has 150 HP. One molotov or about 22 seconds with a hatchet destroys a large box.

Can you lock a storage box in Rust?

Yes. Both the Large Wood Box and the Wood Storage Box take a Code Lock or a Key Lock. Storage Barrels and the Small Stash cannot be locked.

How many satchels does it take to destroy a large box?

Two satchel charges, or one C4 or one rocket. Explosives are a waste on boxes though: a single molotov or a few seconds with a jackhammer does the same job for no sulfur.

Do storage boxes add to upkeep in Rust?

No. Upkeep is charged on building blocks, not on deployables, so filling a room with boxes does not raise your Tool Cupboard cost.

What is the Storage Box Pack in Rust?

The Storage Box Pack is a cosmetic DLC released on 5 March 2026 for $17.99. It adds 16 labelled Large Wood Box skins, such as Sulfur, Scrap, Ammo and Meds, with glowing labels. They keep the normal 48 slots.

Are storage barrels better than large boxes?

No. Storage Barrels hold the same 48 items but cost more and cannot be locked. They are a style choice for a locked room, not an upgrade.
