Milk and cream are the quiet stars of the new livestock update in Rust. Everyone is talking about bulls that charge and cows that need a flatbed, but the dairy side changes something every farmer cares about: your teas. A splash of cream makes a Pure tea hit harder, and a splash of milk makes it last half as long again.
This milk and cream Rust guide goes deep on the dairy loop only. It covers where milk comes from, how to turn it into skim milk and cream in a fridge, what each one does to your calories, hydration and health, and how the new creamy teas and milky teas work. We also run the maths on which tea actually gets you more ore. If you want the whole update (animals, breeding, harvest yields, transport and the biofuel generator), read our Livestock Rust update guide first.
All numbers here come from the September 2026 staging branch, as reported in Rustafied’s patch roundup. Staging values can change before the update goes live with the October 1, 2026 force wipe, and we will update this page if they do.

What Are Milk and Cream in Rust?
Milk is a new food item that comes from the cows added in the livestock update. You can drink it as it is, but its real value is what it turns into. Chill milk in a refrigerator and it splits into two products with different jobs:
- Milk is the raw drink. It gives food, water and a little health, all in one.
- Skim milk is the hydration drink. It keeps most of the water value but loses half the calories and health.
- Cream is the healing food. It gives less water but heals more than milk does.
On top of that, milk and cream can both be used to change Pure teas from the Mixing Table. That is the part that will matter most to farmers and raiders, and it is why a dairy is worth building even if you never drink a glass of milk.
How to Get Milk in Rust
You can’t loot or buy your way into a steady milk supply. It comes from your own herd, so the dairy starts with a cow.
- Bring home a cow. Wild cows can’t breed, age or produce resources. You have to bond with one, lead it home on a rope and keep it in a pen. A cow needs the large flatbed module if you move it by car.
- Keep its condition high. A fed, healthy, bonded cow is a productive cow. Condition also has to be at 60% or higher for a cow to get pregnant, so a well kept cow gives you both milk and calves.
- Collect the milk. Tame cows produce milk as part of the new farming loop, alongside dung for the biofuel generator. Staging hasn’t locked in a final production rate yet, so expect Facepunch to tune how much milk a cow gives before release.
How to Make Cream in Rust
Cream and skim milk are not crafted. They come from time and cold. Here is the process on staging:
- Place a refrigerator. Any refrigerated container works. Put it inside your base, close to the pen.
- Put the milk in. Milk has to sit in the fridge for four hours.
- Skim it. Once the four hours are up, the milk can be skimmed into skim milk and cream.
- Decide what to keep. Cream goes to healing and creamy teas. Skim milk is your water on the go. Keep some milk unskimmed for milky teas.
Milk vs Skim Milk vs Cream Stats
Facepunch describes skim milk and cream as a share of what plain milk gives. This is how they compare on staging:
| Item | Calories | Hydration | Health | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milk | 100% | 100% | 100% | Milky teas, all round food |
| Skim milk | 50% | 80% | 50% | Staying hydrated |
| Cream Healer | 50% | 20% | 150% | Healing and creamy teas |
Two things stand out. First, skimming isn’t free: one milk does not become a full milk’s worth of skim milk plus a full milk’s worth of cream. Each output has half the calories. Second, cream is the only dairy item that is better than milk at anything, and what it’s better at is healing. That makes it a real combat food, the same way a honey bandage made beekeeping worth doing.
If hydration is your problem, skim milk is handy, but a water jug or a bottle filled from your base water setup is still the cheaper way to stay topped up.
Creamy Teas and Milky Teas in Rust
This is the biggest reason to farm dairy. On staging, milk and cream can both be added to Pure teas, and each one changes the tea in a different way:
- Creamy teas give a stronger effect for a shorter time.
- Milky teas keep the same strength but last longer.
Facepunch’s own example uses the Pure Ore Tea:
| Version | Ore bonus | Duration | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Ore Tea | +50% | 30 minutes | The normal tea |
| Creamy Pure Ore Tea | +65% | 24 minutes | 30% stronger, 20% shorter |
| Milky Pure Ore Tea Farm runs | +50% | 45 minutes | Same bonus, 50% longer |
Only the Pure Ore Tea numbers have been shared so far. The patch notes say the same rule applies to Pure teas in general, so you can expect Pure Wood, Pure Scrap and the other Pure teas to follow a similar pattern. That is our reading of the notes, not a confirmed number for each tea, so check the in-game tooltip after the update.
Creamy vs Milky Tea: Which Gets You More Ore?
A simple way to compare teas is to multiply the bonus by the minutes it lasts. That gives you the total extra yield the tea can give you if you mine without stopping for the whole buff.
| Tea | Bonus x minutes | Compared to plain |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Ore Tea | 50 x 30 = 1,500 | Baseline |
| Creamy Pure Ore Tea | 65 x 24 = 1,560 | +4% |
| Milky Pure Ore Tea | 50 x 45 = 2,250 | +50% |
So which is better? It depends on how long you actually spend mining.
- Long farm runs: milk wins by a mile. If you will be hitting nodes for 45 minutes, a milky tea gives you half as much bonus again as a plain one, from the same Pure tea.
- Short trips: cream wins. If you only have 15 or 20 minutes before you head home, the creamy tea’s +65% beats +50% on every single swing, and you won’t waste the time you never use.
- Heavy tools change the picture. With a jackhammer you clear nodes faster, so the bonus on each swing matters more. A creamy tea plus a jackhammer is the fastest short burst of ore you can get.
Milk or Cream: What Should You Make?
Most dairy farmers will end up doing a bit of everything. Here is the quick guide:
| You are about to… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Go into a fight or a monument | Cream | 150% of milk’s healing |
| Farm nodes for a long time | Milky tea | 45 minute Pure buff |
| Grab a few nodes quickly | Creamy tea | Biggest bonus per swing |
| Roam far from water | Skim milk | 80% of milk’s hydration |
| Just need food | Milk | Full calories, no fridge wait |
Cows, milk and teas all reset on wipe day. The livestock update is expected with the October force wipe. Check the countdown so you can start your herd early.
See the Force Wipe CountdownHow to Set Up a Dairy at Your Base
A dairy is a small version of a ranch with one extra job: getting milk from the pen into cold storage and then onto the Mixing Table. Keep the whole chain short.
- Base first. Get a Tool Cupboard and a code lock down before you spend time on animals.
- Build the pen next to the base. Livestock now respects fencing. A walled yard that joins your base keeps the herd in and makes the milk run a few steps long. Our building guide covers the costs.
- Put the fridges inside. With a four hour wait, you want milk sitting safely behind doors. Use more than one fridge so you always have a batch ready.
- Put the Mixing Table by the fridges. Cream and milk go straight from cold storage into your Pure teas.
- Send the rest to fuel. Dung and spare food can go into the biofuel generator for low grade fuel, which we cover in our Biofuel Generator guide.
Keep the build compact. Every extra foundation adds to your upkeep, and a big sprawling farm costs more to keep from decaying.
Milk and Cream Pro Tips
- Always keep some milk unskimmed. Milky teas need milk, not skim milk. It’s easy to skim everything and then have nothing left for a long farm run.
- Save cream for the Pure teas you use for short jobs. A creamy tea is best when you know you’ll only be out for 20 minutes.
- Carry cream on raids and monument runs. It’s a food that heals more than milk, and it frees up slots you’d spend on other food.
- Start the fridge timer early. Four hours is a big part of a play session. Put milk in before you log off or head out farming so it’s ready when you’re back.
- Don’t fight near the pen. Gunfire makes livestock run. Losing a cow is losing your milk supply.
- Plan for the wipe. Your herd, fridges and every glass of milk are gone on the next force wipe, so enjoy the buffs while you have them.
Milk and Cream Rust FAQ
How do you get milk in Rust?
Milk comes from cows you own in the livestock update. Wild cows can’t produce resources, so you need to bond with a cow, bring it home and keep it healthy in a pen.
How do you make cream in Rust?
Put milk in a refrigerator for four hours. After that it can be skimmed into skim milk and cream.
What does cream do in Rust?
Cream gives 50% more health than milk, with half the calories and 20% of the hydration. It can also be added to a Pure tea to make a creamy tea, which is stronger but shorter.
What does skim milk do in Rust?
Skim milk keeps 80% of milk’s hydration, with half the calories and half the health. It’s mainly a drink for staying hydrated.
What is a creamy tea in Rust?
A creamy tea is a Pure tea with cream added. It gives a stronger effect for a shorter time. A Pure Ore Tea goes from +50% ore for 30 minutes to +65% for 24 minutes.
What is a milky tea in Rust?
A milky tea is a Pure tea with milk added. It keeps the same strength but lasts longer. A Pure Ore Tea stays at +50% ore but lasts 45 minutes instead of 30.
Is a creamy or milky tea better in Rust?
A milky tea gives more total bonus over a full buff, about 50% more than a plain Pure tea, so it’s better for long farm runs. A creamy tea gives the bigger bonus per swing, so it’s better for short trips of 20 minutes or less.
Can you add milk or cream to any tea in Rust?
On staging, milk and cream modify Pure teas, the top tier. Only Pure teas have been mentioned so far, so don’t expect Basic or Advanced teas to take dairy.
When do milk and cream come out in Rust?
Milk and cream are part of the livestock update, which is expected with the October 1, 2026 force wipe at around 18:00 UTC. They were tested on the staging branch through September 2026.
