Boots Rust: Craft Cost, Stats, Outpost Price & Best Kit (2026)

Rust clothing guide, 2026

Boots are the best footwear you can craft in Rust. A pair costs 20 leather, 15 metal fragments and 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 2, gives 10% bullet and 10% melee protection to your feet with no cold penalty, and the Outpost sells them for just 20 scrap. They are the cheapest upgrade in any PvP kit, and the one most players forget.

This guide covers the Rust boots craft cost and blueprint, their exact protection stats, how they compare with burlap shoes, hide boots and the hazmat suit, where to buy or find them, the kit to wear them in, and what a recycler gives back.

TL;DR Boots craft from 20 leather, 15 metal fragments and 1 sewing kit at a Workbench 2 in 25 seconds. The blueprint costs 30 scrap at a research table, or you unlock it on the Workbench 2 tech tree. They give 10% projectile, 10% melee, 8% cold, 3% bite and 3% radiation protection, with no downside. The cheapest way to get a pair is the Outpost clothing vending machine for 20 scrap. A monument recycler returns 12 leather, 9 metal fragments and a 60% chance of a sewing kit.

What Are Boots in Rust?

Boots (shortname shoes.boots) are a pair of leather boots reinforced with metal. They go in the feet slot, the same slot as Burlap Shoes, Hide Boots and the Frog Boots, so you wear one pair at a time. A hazmat suit or other full body suit covers your feet itself, so you cannot wear boots with one.

Feet are a small hitbox, so boots will never be the piece that wins a fight on their own. But they cost almost nothing, they have no cold or movement penalty, and they round out every set in our Rust clothing guide and Rust armor guide. If you are wearing a metal facemask and bare feet, you are leaving free protection on the table.

How to Craft Boots in Rust

How to craft boots in Rust: 20 leather plus 15 metal fragments plus 1 sewing kit makes 1 pair of Boots at a Workbench 2; the sewing kit holds 20 cloth and 3 rope, craft time 25 seconds, blueprint 30 scrap
Three ingredients and a Workbench 2.
  1. Learn the blueprint. Research a pair for 30 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 tech tree.
  2. Collect 20 leather. Harvest animals with a hatchet or knife. A bear, a horse or a boar gives enough for a pair in one kill. Our horse guide covers where they roam.
  3. Get 15 metal fragments. Smelt metal ore in a furnace. See our metal fragments guide.
  4. Get 1 sewing kit. A sewing kit is 20 cloth and 3 rope at a Workbench 3, or you loot them from barrels and crates early in the wipe.
  5. Craft at a Workbench 2. It takes 25 seconds.
Cheaper than it looks The only scarce part is the sewing kit, and boots need just one, compared with eight for a metal chest plate. If you have the scrap, buying boots at the Outpost for 20 scrap saves your sewing kits for armor that needs more of them.

Boots Blueprint

Boots are not a default blueprint. You learn them one of two ways:

  • Research table: put a pair of boots and 30 scrap into a research table. Boots are an uncommon item, so they cost the second cheapest research price. Buying a pair at the Outpost and researching it costs 50 scrap in total.
  • Tech tree: unlock boots on the Workbench 2 branch of the Rust tech tree. You pay for every node on the path to them, so research is cheaper if you already own a pair.

Rust Boots Protection

Rust boots protection stats: 10% projectile, 10% melee, 8% cold, 3% bite and 3% radiation, feet slot
Small numbers, but no penalty anywhere.

Armor in Rust only protects the body part it covers, so boots reduce damage from hits on your feet: 10% of bullet damage and 10% of melee damage, plus 3% against animal bites and 3% radiation.

They also add 8% cold protection. Unlike metal armor, which makes you colder, boots only help, which makes them a good fit for the snow biome with a snow jacket and pants.

Boots vs Other Footwear in Rust

Rust footwear compared: Burlap Shoes about 5% bullet and melee for 10 cloth, Hide Boots 5% for 10 leather, Boots 10% bullet and 10% melee at a Workbench 2, and the Hazmat Suit which takes the feet slot with 50% radiation protection
Boots double the protection of the wipe day options.

Hide Boots5%5%10 leatherNone (default blueprint)

Burlap Shoes and Hide Boots are the wipe day picks: they are default blueprints with no workbench, so you can wear them from your first minute. Hide boots also give 5% cold. Swap to boots as soon as you have a Workbench 2 or 20 scrap. Frog Boots are a cosmetic Steam item, not something you craft from the tech tree. A hazmat suit covers your feet as part of the suit, so you drop your boots when you put one on for a rad run.

Where to Get Boots in Rust

Where to get boots in Rust: the Outpost clothing vending machine sells them for 20 scrap, research them for 30 scrap or unlock them on the Workbench 2 tech tree, and they are a rare drop in locked crates (about 1.3%), military crates and elite crates
Buying beats looting by a long way.
  • Outpost: the clothing vending machine at Outpost sells boots for 20 scrap, next to t-shirts, longsleeves, snow jackets and tactical gloves. This is the fastest way to get a pair, and to get one to research.
  • Craft them: once you know the blueprint, every pair costs only leather, frags and one sewing kit.
  • Loot: boots are a rare drop. The Facepunch item table lists about 1.6% in basic mission loot boxes and about 1.3% in a locked crate, with military crates and elite crates lower than that. Do not farm crates for them.

Best Kit to Wear Boots With

Best kit to wear boots with in Rust: Metal Facemask on the head, Metal Chest Plate over a Hoodie, Road Sign Kilt over Pants, Tactical Gloves and Boots on the hands and feet

Keep a spare pair in every locker loadout. Boots are so cheap there is no reason to respawn and fight barefoot.

Recycling Boots

Recycling boots in Rust: a monument recycler returns 12 leather, 9 metal fragments and a 60% chance of a sewing kit; a safe zone recycler returns 8 leather, 6 metal fragments and a 40% sewing kit chance
Spare boots give back a sewing kit most of the time.

A monument recycler (60%) turns one pair of boots into 12 leather and 9 metal fragments, with a 60% chance of a sewing kit. A safe zone recycler at Outpost or Bandit Camp (40%) gives 8 leather and 6 frags, with a 40% sewing kit chance. Recycling a spare pair is a decent way to fish for sewing kits, but wearing it is usually worth more.

Boots Skins

Boots are one of the most skinned clothing items in Rust, with dozens of Steam workshop and store skins. Skins only change how they look, not the stats. Some come free: the Rust Isles Boots were a general Twitch drop, see our Twitch drops guide. Browse the rest in our Rust skins guide.

Rust Boots Tips

Rust boots tips: buy them for 20 scrap at Outpost, research them early for 30 scrap, wear hide boots first, save sewing kits, use them in the snow biome for 8% cold, and leave them off with a hazmat suit
Small habits that make boots worth it.
  • Never fight barefoot. Leg and foot shots land often when people strafe and jump. 10% off for 20 scrap is free value.
  • Research them on day one. 30 scrap is one of the cheapest blueprints that matters for PvP.
  • Start with hide boots. 10 leather and no workbench gets you 5% until boots are ready.
  • Buy instead of craft when kits are short. Each crafted pair uses a sewing kit that could go toward a hoodie or a chest plate.
  • Take them off for hazmat. The suit fills your feet slot, so put the boots in your inventory or a box.
  • Remember the wipe. Your blueprints usually reset with the server. Check when the next force wipe is.
