Rust Bunker Guide: Every Bunker Type, Tier List & How to Build (2026)

Rust bunker guide, checked October 2026

A Rust bunker is a sealed part of your base that only you can open. Raiders who get through your walls still find the tool cupboard or the loot room closed off, with no door to blow, so they have to pay for at least one more wall or give up. Bunkers are the cheapest raid cost you can add to a base, and almost every good 2026 base design uses at least one.

This guide covers every Rust bunker type that still works on the October 2026 Livestock patch: how each one is built, how you open and close it, what it costs and how raiders beat it. You also get the bunker tier list from S to F, the bunkers that were patched, the best bunker for solos, duos and clans, the build costs and raid costs, and the 2025 and 2026 tutorials worth copying. For full bases built around these tricks, see our Rust base designs, and for the building basics start with the Rust building guide.

TL;DR What it is: a TC or loot room sealed by a building trick, opened only by someone with building privilege. Best bunker: the Vending Machine TC Bunker: easy, cheap, fits almost any base. Best for external TCs: the Freehand (roof) bunker. Best for loot rooms: the Multi TC roof bunker. Easiest for a starter: the stability (raised foundation) bunker or a stair bunker. Patched: offset, God, Roden and pixel gap bunkers stopped working on PC at the April 2024 force wipe. Rule one: keep a sleeping bag inside every bunker you can’t open from outside.
What is a bunker in Rust: a real sheet metal bunker base with no outside door to the TC, plus the three parts of every bunker: the sealed TC, the vending machine or roof that opens it, and the twig support that drops the seal

What Is a Bunker in Rust?

A bunker is a section of your base with no way in except through a building piece that only you can remove or place. You seal your tool cupboard, your loot boxes or your external TCs inside it, and you open it again with a twig piece, a roof or a rotated vending machine. Because placing and rotating pieces needs building privilege, a raider who is not authed on your TC can’t use the same trick. Their only options are to blow through more walls or break the piece from the soft side.

That is why bunkers matter so much for offline raids. A normal 2×2 lets raiders blow one wall and one door to reach the TC. A bunkered 2×2 makes them blow that wall, then another armored or sheet metal wall around the bunker, and many groups don’t carry enough explosives for the second one. The bunker also hides where your loot is, so raiders waste rockets guessing.

Bunkers have downsides too. They take space, some are fiddly to build, and if a raider breaks the sealing piece from the outside and you have no bag inside, you can be locked out of your own base. Every bunker also needs upkeep on its extra pieces, so check the upkeep calculator before you add five of them.

How Bunkers Work: The 4 Mechanics

Every bunker in Rust is built on one or more of four building rules. Once you understand them, you can read any bunker tutorial and know why each step is there.

MechanicHow it worksBunkers that use it
StabilityA high tier piece is held up only by a twig or wood piece. Break the support and the high tier piece falls, opening the bunker.Stability (raised foundation), stair, roof foundation, terrain
Roof splitA roof placed next to a wall that is attached on only one side splits that wall and opens it. A wall attached on every side can’t be opened this way, so nothing may ever touch the opening wall.Freehand, Multi TC, vending roof, rock, triplet, floorstacked
Building privilegeOnly a player authed on the TC can place the twig, roof or rotate the vending machine that opens the bunker. All of them

Rust Bunker Tier List (2026)

Rust bunker tier list 2026 with in-game screenshots: S tier Vending TC, Vending Roof and Freehand; A tier Multi TC; B tier Roof Foundation and Terrain; C tier Stairs, Stability and Triplet; D tier Floorstacked and Suicide; F tier patched Offset, God, Roden and Pixel Gap bunkers
Every bunker ranked on how easy it is to build, how hard it is to raid and whether it still works.

The tiers follow the bunker tier list from Rust builder Crow, which RustBaseDesign keeps up to date (last updated June 2026), checked against 2025 and 2026 tutorials. A bunker gets a high rank for being cheap, simple, hard to soft side and easy to fit into any base.

Vending Machine TC Bunker (S Tier)

Rust vending machine TC bunker in game: the vending machine fills the doorway in front of the tool cupboard; vending machine costs 20 high quality metal and 3 gears at Workbench 1; steps: TC past the doorway, upgrade the doorway, rotate the machine when authed
The vending machine blocks the doorway in front of the TC, and only an authed player can rotate it.

The Vending Machine TC Bunker is the most used bunker in Rust and the best one to learn first. A vending machine sits in the doorway in front of your tool cupboard (or lockers, boxes or a large battery). It fills the gap so nobody can walk or reach past it. If you are authed on the TC, you can rotate the vending machine out of the way, grab what you need and rotate it back. A raider who isn’t authed can’t rotate it, so they have to break it or blow the walls around it.

The vending machine crafts at a Workbench 1 for 20 high quality metal and 3 gears and is a default blueprint, so you can bunker your TC on day one. Since the Meta Madness update (May 2024) it rotates 90 degrees, which is what makes the bunker easy to open. The machine itself has 1,250 HP, so breaking it costs 3 C4 or 10 rockets, and most raiders go through the walls beside it instead.

How to build the Vending Machine TC Bunker

  1. Build the room the TC goes in with a single doorway, and upgrade the doorway to stone, sheet metal or armored.
  2. Place the TC a little past the doorway, in the middle of the room. Keep it close to the door and to the right so splash from a side rocket can’t reach it.
  3. Rotate the vending machine and place it in the doorway, as close to the doorway as it will go.
  4. Optional: hang a door on the inside for extra raid cost. Crow’s numbers put an armored vending bunker at about 15 rockets.
  5. To open it, auth on the TC and rotate the vending machine. Rotate it back before you log off.

The loot room version works the same way. Add two or three triangle foundations off one side of the sealed base, wall them in, place shelves and up to four boxes, then put an upgraded doorway and the vending machine in front. Leave a little room between the machine and the doorway or you won’t reach the boxes.

Weak spots The vending machine itself can be soft sided, and a badly placed TC can be hit through the gap by rocket splash or fire. Put the TC tight to the doorway, upgrade the doorway, and never leave the TC in line with an outer wall.

Roof Bunkers: Vending Roof, Freehand and Multi TC

Rust roof bunkers in game: vending roof bunker, freehand bunker for external TCs and Multi TC loot room bunker, all opened by placing a twig roof next to a wall attached on one side
Roof bunkers open when you place a twig roof next to a wall that is only attached on one side.

Roof bunkers use the roof split rule. You build a wall that is attached on only one side, and when you place a roof or triangle roof next to it, the wall opens. Remove the roof and it is sealed again. Placing a roof needs building privilege, so a raider can’t do it.

Vending Roof (shop) Bunker (S tier)

Place a wall, then place a vending machine right against it, usually on your roof as a drone shop. The back of the vending machine can only be reached once a thatch or twig triangle roof splits the wall. Upgrade the wall to armored so it can’t be soft sided. Never attach anything to every side of that wall, or it can never be opened again. An armored wall takes about 15 rockets or 8 C4.

Freehand Bunker (S tier, best for external TCs)

A square foundation is placed freehand, slightly lower than the triangles next to it, so its wall is attached on one side only. The wall’s stability must read 78 to 79 percent or you redo it. Upgrade it, cover the gaps with a triangle frame from above, and put the external TC on a metal triangle behind it. Open it by placing a triangle roof on the left side, and close it by destroying the roof. You can also disconnect the external from the main base with a square roof and reconnect it with frames. It is tricky to build, so keep a spare foundation and frame nearby so you can rebuild it if someone soft sides the foundation.

Multi TC Bunker (A tier, best for loot rooms)

A sealed loot room high in the base that belongs to an external TC instead of the main one. Build seven or eight squares out from the base with a triangle at the end, demolish the squares and build back with triangles only, then remove every triangle except the two touching the base. Build it on the second or third floor, wall it in, and seal it with a regular wall. Cover the gaps with a wall frame or door frame of the same material as the outer wall, facing the same way. It holds about four large boxes and a battery, and you open it with a twig roof, which costs nothing.

Shelves, not salvaged shelves In Multi TC loot rooms, use half height triangle shelves. Salvaged shelves cause stability bugs that can break your boxes. Keep boxes away from the floor gap and from where the opening roof goes.

Stability, Stair and Roof Foundation Bunkers

Rust stability bunkers in game: raised foundation stability bunker, stair bunker and roof foundation bunker, with the twig half wall, stairs and raised foundation pieces that hold them up
Break the twig support and the high tier piece above it drops, opening the way in.

Stability (raised foundation) Bunker (C tier)

The oldest bunker in Rust, and one that still works on PC and console. On a 3×1, place three triangle foundations, two of them raised. Build half walls on the two walls touching the bunker area and delete the bottom one; the top one stays up thanks to stability. Place the lower half wall and keep it twig, then seal the entrance with a triangle floor upgraded to metal or armored. To open it, break the twig half wall and the triangle drops. To close it, place a new half wall inside and cover it with a ceiling. It is bulky, and if more than one person uses it the last one out has to seal it.

Stair Bunker (C tier)

Stairs over the drop into the core, held up by a twig or wood triangle. Break the triangle and the staircase falls. Use wood instead of twig when you are offline, put a window above it to stop molotovs, and use it to block the first to second floor doorway rather than the ground floor opening, where twig can be splashed from below. It is “more of a blocker than a bunker”, but it is cheap and quick.

Roof Foundation Bunker (B tier)

A core entrance bunker. A roof is held up by a single raised foundation next to a square drop down into the core. Upgrade that foundation to wood, not twig: twig pokes through the sides and can be shot from outside, while wood can only be broken from inside with a couple of machete hits. Destroy the foundation and the roof collapses. Every re-seal costs about 13 high quality metal for the roof, and it needs a big footprint.

Terrain Bunker (B tier)

The twig foundation that seals the entrance sits under the terrain, so raiders can’t shoot it from outside. It has no soft side and is cheap, but you need exactly the right spot and must plan the base around it, so it suits small starter bases.

Ramp bunkerA roof breaks the top of three rampsOffline stash under ladder hatchesUses a lot of loot space
Ladder hatch bunkerOpen the hatch, drop into a sealed room2×1 bases since armored ladder hatchesThe hatch is the weakest piece in the floor

Ladder hatch bunkers got a lot better in 2026. The Spring Clean update (April 2026) added the armored ladder hatch and made square ladder hatches flush with the floor, so builders now hide floating stability bunkers and floor stacked loot rooms under them. Floor stacking itself still works in October 2026, and the newest method uses a low wall, a ramp, a roof and two small boxes as a guide.

Patched Bunkers: What No Longer Works

Patched Rust bunkers: offset, God, Roden and pixel gap bunkers, which stopped working on PC at the April 2024 force wipe and only work on Console Edition
Bunkers that relied on a pixel gap between floors and foundations stopped working on PC in 2024.

At the April 2024 force wipe, every bunker that used a pixel gap between floors and foundations stopped working on PC: the offset bunker, the God bunker, the Roden bunker and the classic pixel gap bunker. Facepunch never named the change in its patch notes, but builders confirmed they became impossible to build. They still work on Rust Console Edition, which runs an older building system.

Some builders showed new pixel gap methods in 2025 and 2026, but they are fiddly, they break easily, and Facepunch can close them at any monthly update. Don’t build a base that depends on one. The old twig-above-the-roof bunker is also out: Facepunch stopped roof bunkers being opened from outside in 2020, and an incendiary rocket or molotov at the right spot burns the twig anyway.

If you are a solo, don’t try to bunker everything. One vending bunker on the TC and a stair bunker on the core is plenty, and every extra bunker adds upkeep. Bigger groups get more value from bunkers, because raiders must find them all. Base designs like Limi Lab’s Aether (7 bunkers) or Nini Rust’s The Ghost (6 bunkers) spread the loot across many sealed rooms so no single raid path gets everything. Remember that since Breach and Clear (September 2026), TC upkeep goes up for groups bigger than four, so every bunker pod costs a clan more to keep than it costs a duo.

Bunker Cost and Raid Cost

Rust sheet metal 2x2 bunker base cost: 6,780 metal fragments and 2,545 wood to build, 876 fragments a day upkeep, 1,000 wood tool cupboard, 7 rockets or 4 C4 to raid
What a sheet metal 2×2 with a bunker below costs to build, keep and raid.

A bunker itself costs very little: a vending machine, a twig roof or a twig half wall. The real cost is the extra high tier walls around it. Here is a reference sheet metal 2×2 bunker base, two storeys with a sealed bunker below (36 building blocks), costed for the Livestock patch:

PieceQtyCost each
Sheet metal foundation450 wood + 200 frags
Sheet metal floor425 wood + 100 frags
Sheet metal wall2150 wood + 200 frags
Sheet metal doorway235 wood + 140 frags

Garage door1300 frags + 2 gears
Sheet metal door2150 frags
Tool cupboard11,000 wood
Total6,780 frags, 2,545 wood, 2 gears

Upkeep on that base is about 876 metal fragments a day, or 6,132 for a week. To raid it, a group needs 7 rockets or 4 C4 through the doors, or about 276 explosive 5.56 rounds. Use the Rust raid calculator and the raid chart to price your own layout.

Common Bunker Mistakes

  • No bag inside. If a raider breaks your sealing piece from outside and you can’t open it, a sleeping bag inside is the only way back in.
  • Attaching to the opening wall. Roof bunkers only open while the wall is attached on one side. One extra ceiling or wall and it is sealed for good.
  • Leaving the twig exposed. Twig and wood supports must be inside the base, away from outer walls, or rocket splash and molotovs break them for the raider.
  • Building a patched bunker. Old pixel gap and offset tutorials from before 2024 won’t seal on PC.
  • Forgetting upkeep. Every bunker adds pieces to the TC. Watch your decay and upkeep or the base falls on its own.
  • Not sealing when you leave. A bunker you leave open is just a room.

Bunkers are only worth it if your base lasts the wipe. Check when the next force wipe lands on our Rust force wipe countdown before you sink 50,000 stone into a bunkered main.

Rust Bunker FAQ

What is a bunker in Rust?

A bunker is a sealed part of your base, usually the tool cupboard or a loot room, that can only be opened with a building trick that needs building privilege, like rotating a vending machine or placing a twig roof. Raiders have to blow extra walls to get in.

What is the best bunker in Rust?

The Vending Machine TC Bunker. A vending machine in the doorway in front of your TC blocks the way in, and only someone authed on the TC can rotate it. It is cheap, easy and fits almost any base.

Do bunkers still work in Rust in 2026?

Yes. The vending machine, vending roof, freehand, Multi TC, rock, roof foundation, terrain, stair, stability, triplet, floorstacked and suicide bunkers all work on the October 2026 patch. The offset, God, Roden and pixel gap bunkers were patched on PC in April 2024.

How do you open a vending machine bunker in Rust?

Auth on the tool cupboard, then rotate the vending machine out of the doorway. Rotate it back when you leave. Players who aren’t authed can’t rotate it.

How much does a vending machine cost in Rust?

20 high quality metal and 3 gears at a Workbench 1. It is a default blueprint, so you can craft it without research.

Was the pixel gap bunker patched?

Yes, on PC. Bunkers that used a pixel gap between floors and foundations, including the offset, God and Roden bunkers, stopped working at the April 2024 force wipe. They still work on Rust Console Edition. New workarounds appear now and then but are unreliable.

How do you get into a suicide bunker in Rust?

Place a sleeping bag inside the sealed room, then use the kill command in the F1 console and respawn on the bag. Move loot in and out through a box that sticks through the wall or through drop boxes.

What is the best bunker for a solo in Rust?

A stair or stability bunker on your 2×1 starter, then a Vending Machine TC Bunker once you have 20 high quality metal and 3 gears. That is enough for most solos; more bunkers mostly add upkeep.
