Every base with more than one floor needs a way up, and every way up is a way in. The Ladder Hatch is the lockable door that sits in your floor: closed, it is part of the ceiling; open, it drops a ladder so you can climb straight through.
This Ladder Hatch Rust guide covers the craft cost and the wooden ladder that goes into it, how to get the blueprint, where it fits, its health and exact raid cost, the new armored ladder hatch, the base designs that use hatches well, and the mistakes that turn your hatch into the cheapest way into your loot.

What Is a Ladder Hatch in Rust?
A Ladder Hatch is a hinged hatch that you place in the hole of a floor frame. Facepunch describes it as a hatch that opens and changes into a ladder. Closed, you can stand on it like a floor. Open it and a ladder drops down, so you can climb from the room below to the room above.
It behaves like a door in every way that matters. It takes a code lock or key lock, only players with building privilege can place it, it can be repaired with a hammer and it decays if it is left outside your tool cupboard protection. The big difference is where it sits: in the floor, which is usually the part of your base you think least about defending.
That is why it is both a base design staple and a classic weak point. It is the normal way to reach the roof, a second floor or a bunker room, and at 250 HP it is also much easier to break than the floor around it.

How to Craft a Ladder Hatch
The recipe hides a second craft. Before you can make the hatch, you need a wooden ladder.
- Craft a wooden ladder. 300 wood and 3 rope at a Workbench 1. The ladder is a default blueprint.
- Craft the hatch. 1 wooden ladder, 300 metal fragments and 3 gears at a Workbench 2. It takes 30 seconds, or 15 at a Workbench 3.
Gears are the bottleneck. You cannot farm them from nodes, so they come from crates and from recycling components. Three gears per hatch adds up quickly in a big multi-floor base, and the armored hatch needs six.
Getting the blueprint. Put a looted Ladder Hatch in a research table with 60 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 branch of the tech tree for 250 scrap. Finished hatches also drop from high tier loot, including the Bradley crates, so you can often hang one before you can craft it.
All 4 Ladder Hatches in Rust
There are four hatches, and they come in matching pairs.
- Ladder Hatch. The standard square hatch. 250 HP, Workbench 2.
- Triangle Ladder Hatch. Same cost and health, but it fits a triangle floor frame. Useful in compact triangle stairwells.
- Armored Ladder Hatch. The top tier square hatch, 1,000 HP, Workbench 3.
- Armored Triangle Ladder Hatch. The armored version for triangle frames, with the same 1,000 HP.
There is no wooden or stone tier. Before the armored hatch arrived, every hatch in the game had 250 HP no matter how strong the floor around it was.
How to Place a Ladder Hatch
The most common question about the Ladder Hatch is why it will not place. The answer is almost always the frame.
- Build a floor frame. Pick the floor frame from the building plan, not a normal floor. It is a floor with a square hole in the middle, with the same cost and health as a full floor.
- Match the shape. A square hatch needs a square floor frame. A triangle hatch needs a triangle floor frame.
- Lock it. Put a code lock on it right away. A hatch without a lock is an open door in your floor.
- Leave room below. When it opens the ladder drops into the room below, so keep that space clear of boxes and deployables.
- Stay in building privilege. You need to be authorised on the tool cupboard to place it, and the cupboard’s upkeep is what keeps it from decaying.

Ladder Hatch Raid Cost
A normal Ladder Hatch has 250 HP. These are the numbers to break one from full health.
| Explosive | Ladder Hatch (250 HP) | Sulfur | Armored Hatch (1,000 HP) | Sulfur |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C4 | 1 | 2,200 | 3 | 6,600 |
| Rockets | 2 | 2,800 | 5 | 7,000 |
| Satchel charges | 4 | 1,920 | 15 | 7,200 |
| Explosive 5.56 ammo | 63 | 1,575 | 250 | 6,250 |
Explosive ammo is the cheapest in sulfur, but it is slow and loud. Most raiders just use one C4. Compare that with the floor it sits in: a sheet metal floor takes 4 C4 and an armored floor takes 8. A 250 HP hatch quarters the cost of getting through a sheet metal ceiling, which is why raiders always look up for hatches first. Our Rust raid calculator adds up a whole route, hatches included.
Ladder Hatch vs Armored Ladder Hatch
For years the hatch was the one part of a base you could not upgrade. That changed with the Spring Clean update on April 2, 2026, which added the Armored Ladder Hatch and its triangle version.
- Health. 1,000 HP, four times a normal hatch and the same as an armored door.
- Raid cost. 3 C4, 5 rockets, 15 satchels or 250 explosive rounds, again the same as an armored door.
- Cost. 35 high quality metal, 6 gears and 1 wooden ladder at a Workbench 3. That is more HQM and gears than an armored door (20 HQM, 5 gears).
- Unlock. It sits on the Workbench 3 tech tree right after armored doors, or you can research a looted one.
The normal hatch is still the right pick for roof access and low value shafts, because it is cheap and needs no HQM. Use armored hatches anywhere a hatch leads to loot, your TC or a core room. In an armored floor, a 250 HP hatch is an 8 C4 ceiling with a 1 C4 hole in it.
Ladder Hatch Base Design
- Roof access. The classic use. A hatch in the top floor gets you onto the roof to man auto turrets, repair or shoot back during an online raid.
- Airlock blocker. Build an airlock with a floor frame on top instead of a ceiling and put a hatch in it. Left open, the hatch hangs down and blocks the path, so raiders have to break it too.
- Bunker exits. Many bunker designs use a hatch to drop into a sealed room that has no door at all.
- Trap bases. Open a hatch under a visitor and drop them into a room with shotgun traps. It is the oldest trick in Rust for a reason.
- Not over your loot. A normal hatch directly above a loot room or the tool cupboard is the cheapest way in. Move it, or make it armored.
Ladder Hatch Tips
- Always lock it. The same rule as every door. One code lock is 100 metal fragments, a lot cheaper than losing the base.
- Armored where it counts. The main stairwell and anything above loot get an armored hatch. Roof hatches over empty rooms can stay normal.
- Save your gears. Three per hatch and six per armored hatch. Do not burn them on hatches you do not need.
- Recycle spares. A recycler gives back 180 metal fragments, about 2 gears and often the ladder.
- Count the hatch when you raid. If a sheet metal ceiling has a normal hatch in it, 1 C4 on the hatch beats 4 on the floor.
- Repair after a fight. A damaged hatch can be hammered back to full health once it stops taking damage.
- Remember the wipe. Hatches, blueprints and the bases they sit in all reset. Check when the next force wipe is before you spend HQM on armored ones late in the month.
Ladder Hatch FAQ
How do you craft a ladder hatch in Rust?
Craft a wooden ladder from 300 wood and 3 rope at a Workbench 1, then craft the ladder hatch from 1 wooden ladder, 300 metal fragments and 3 gears at a Workbench 2.
How do you get the ladder hatch blueprint?
Research a ladder hatch at a research table for 60 scrap, or unlock it on the Workbench 2 tech tree for 250 scrap.
Why can I not place a ladder hatch?
A ladder hatch only fits in a floor frame, not a normal floor. Square hatches need a square floor frame and triangle hatches need a triangle floor frame. You also need building privilege at the tool cupboard.
How much HP does a ladder hatch have?
A normal ladder hatch has 250 HP. The armored ladder hatch has 1,000 HP.
How many C4 does it take to break a ladder hatch?
One C4 breaks a normal ladder hatch. It also takes 2 rockets, 4 satchel charges or 63 explosive 5.56 rounds. An armored ladder hatch takes 3 C4, 5 rockets, 15 satchels or 250 explosive rounds.
Is there an armored ladder hatch in Rust?
Yes. The armored ladder hatch was added in the Spring Clean update on April 2, 2026. It costs 35 high quality metal, 6 gears and 1 wooden ladder at a Workbench 3 and has 1,000 HP. There is a triangle version too.
Can you put a code lock on a ladder hatch?
Yes. A ladder hatch takes a code lock or a key lock just like a door, and you should always lock it.
What is the ladder hatch item ID?
The ladder hatch is floor.ladder.hatch with item ID 1948067030. The armored ladder hatch is floor.ladder.hatch.toptier with item ID 607785075.
