Armored Wall Rust: HP, HQM Cost, Raid Cost & Upkeep (2026)

Rust building guide, 2026

Every late-wipe base has one room that nobody gets into cheaply. That room is almost always built from armored walls, the fifth and final building tier in Rust. An armored wall has double the health of sheet metal, it takes more sulfur to break than anything else you can build, and it costs high quality metal to put up and to keep up.

This armored wall Rust guide covers the health, the 25 HQM upgrade cost, exactly how many explosives each wall takes, the HQM upkeep, the soft side, and where armored walls are worth the metal. If you are still deciding between tiers, our metal wall guide and stone wall guide cover the two tiers below it.

TL;DR An armored wall in Rust has 2,000 HP and costs 25 high quality metal to upgrade with a hammer. It takes 8 C4 (17,600 sulfur), 15 rockets, 46 satchels or 799 explosive rounds to break, and C4 is the cheapest option. Upkeep is about 3 to 8 HQM per wall per day from your tool cupboard, and without upkeep it decays away in 12 hours. Half walls, low walls, doorways, windows and wall frames have the same HP and raid cost.

What Is an Armored Wall in Rust?

An armored wall is a normal wall building block upgraded to the Armored grade, the highest of Rust’s five building grades: twig, wood, stone, sheet metal and armored. It is not a separate item you craft. You place a twig wall with the building plan, then hit it with the hammer and pick Armored from the upgrade wheel. You can jump straight from twig to armored without stopping at the tiers in between, as long as you have building privilege and 25 high quality metal in your inventory.

In game it looks like heavy riveted steel plate with a rust-brown frame. It is fireproof, it is the hardest building block on the map to melee, and C4 is the cheapest way through it. That is why most groups save it for the parts of the base that matter most: the tool cupboard room, the main loot room and the last wall before them. Our Rust building guide covers how the whole grade system works.

Armored Wall Upgrade Cost

One armored wall costs 25 high quality metal. There is no blueprint to unlock and no workbench needed, so the only real barrier is the HQM itself. To upgrade:

  1. Place a wall with the building plan inside your own tool cupboard range.
  2. Equip the hammer, aim at the wall and open the hammer’s upgrade wheel.
  3. Select Armored. The 25 HQM comes out of your inventory and the wall jumps straight to 2,000 HP.

Twenty-five HQM does not sound like much until you count the walls. A small 2×2 core has eight outer walls, so armoring just those is 200 HQM, before floors, ceilings or an armored door. That is why most bases go armored in stages as the wipe goes on.

Armored Wall Raid Cost

These are the numbers to break one full armored wall from either side. Every other armored wall piece takes the same, so there is no cheap half wall or doorway to hit.

Armored wall raid cost in Rust: 8 C4, 799 explosive ammo, 15 rockets, 46 satchels, 223 beancans, 134 HV rockets, 12 MLRS rockets or 114 40mm HE grenades
C4 is the cheapest way through an armored wall by a clear margin.

The jump from sheet metal is brutal for raiders. A sheet metal wall takes 4 C4 (8,800 sulfur); the armored wall next to it takes 8 C4 (17,600 sulfur). That is the whole point of armoring the core: a raid team that planned for sheet metal runs out of boom one wall short. The raid calculator adds up full raid paths if you want the total for a base.

Raider’s rule Never go through an armored wall if an armored door is next to it. An armored door takes 3 C4 or 250 explosive rounds, less than half the sulfur of the wall around it.

Armored Wall vs Sheet Metal vs Stone

Stone vs sheet metal vs armored wall in Rust: 500, 1,000 and 2,000 HP, 2, 4 and 8 C4, 5, 8 and 12 hour decay, and upkeep in stone, fragments and HQM
Each tier doubles the health and doubles the C4 bill.
GradeHPUpgrade costC4DecayUpkeep a day
Stone500300 stone25 hours30 to 100 stone
Sheet Metal1,000200 metal fragments48 hours20 to 67 fragments
Armored Toughest2,00025 HQM812 hours3 to 8 HQM

Sheet metal is still the value pick for most of a base: cheap fragments, 1,000 HP and fireproof. Armored is where you spend HQM once the base is worth protecting. The typical late-wipe layout is a stone honeycomb on the outside, a sheet metal middle layer, and armored walls around the tool cupboard and loot.

Armored Wall Upkeep and Decay

Rust armored wall upkeep and decay: 3 to 8 HQM per wall per day paid from the tool cupboard, and 12 hours to decay with no upkeep
Armored upkeep is paid in HQM, so keep some in the cupboard.

Armored walls are paid for in high quality metal. Each wall costs about 3 HQM a day on a small base and up to about 8 HQM a day on a big one, because Rust charges a bigger share of each block’s build cost as your base grows. The HQM comes straight out of the tool cupboard, and the cupboard shows how long your current stock will last.

If the cupboard runs out, armored walls start to decay. With no upkeep at all an armored wall goes from full health to gone in 12 hours, the slowest of any grade. That extra time is nice, but it is not protection: a base that stops paying upkeep is a free raid once the walls are low. Our Rust decay guide explains the timers in full.

Armored Wall Soft Side

Armored wall soft side in Rust: a pickaxe takes about 17 hours on the hard side and about 1 hour 40 minutes on the soft side, while C4 does the same either way
Melee is ten times faster on the soft side. Explosives don’t care.

Like every wall in Rust, an armored wall has a hard side and a soft side. The soft side takes about ten times more melee damage. On the hard side, a pickaxe needs roughly 17 hours of swinging to break an armored wall. On the soft side it is about an hour and 40 minutes, and a salvaged icepick is about an hour and 10 minutes. That is slow, but on an offline base it is a real way in that costs zero sulfur.

Explosives don’t care which side they hit: C4, rockets, satchels and explosive ammo do the same damage to both faces. The fix is simple. Place walls from inside the base so the soft side faces in, and check any wall you placed from outside.

Other Armored Wall Pieces

Every armored wall piece in Rust: wall, half wall, low wall, doorway, window and wall frame all have 2,000 HP and take 8 C4
No armored piece is a cheap way in. The doors and windows in them are.

The full wall is not the only armored piece. The half wall, low wall, doorway, window and wall frame all have 2,000 HP when armored and all take 8 C4, 15 rockets, 46 satchels or 799 explosive rounds. What you put in them is the weak point:

  • Doorway: holds a single door. Even an armored door is only 3 C4.
  • Window: takes window bars, strengthened glass or reinforced glass, which are far weaker than the wall.
  • Wall frame: holds a garage door, double door or shop front.

How to Get HQM for Armored Walls

Where to get high quality metal for armored walls in Rust: HQM quarry, metal ore nodes, HQM nodes, recycling and smelting HQM ore in a furnace
One diesel in the HQM quarry pays for two armored walls.
  • HQM Quarry: 50 HQM ore per diesel, enough for two armored walls. The steadiest supply on the map.
  • HQM nodes: rare silver nodes, most common in the jungle, worth about 20 HQM each.
  • Metal ore nodes: every normal metal node drops a little HQM ore on top of the metal ore.
  • Recycling: components such as sheet metal, metal pipes and rifle bodies break down into HQM.
  • Smelting: HQM ore turns into high quality metal one to one in a furnace.

Armored Wall Tips

Six armored wall tips for Rust: armor the TC room, honeycomb in stone, doors are cheaper to raid, keep the soft side in, stock HQM upkeep and cover the walls with turrets
Armor the rooms that matter, not the whole base.
  • Armor the TC room first. If raiders reach the tool cupboard, they own the base. It is the best place for your first 25 HQM walls.
  • Honeycomb in cheaper tiers. Stone and sheet metal layers outside the armored core make raiders burn C4 before they reach it.
  • Doors are the weak point. An armored door costs raiders 3 C4 against 8 for the wall. Use airlocks so two doors guard every entrance.
  • Soft side in. Check every wall face from outside. One soft side facing out is a free pickaxe raid.
  • Stock HQM for upkeep. Keep a few days of HQM in the cupboard, not just wood and stone.
  • Cover the outer walls. An auto turret watching the wall a raider has to stand next to makes a slow explo ammo raid much harder.

Timing matters too. Armored walls are a mid to late wipe build, so check when the next force wipe is before you spend a week of HQM on them.

Armored Wall Rust FAQ

How much HP does an armored wall have in Rust?

An armored wall has 2,000 HP. That is double a sheet metal wall (1,000 HP) and four times a stone wall (500 HP). Armored half walls, low walls, doorways, windows and wall frames also have 2,000 HP.

How much HQM does an armored wall cost?

Upgrading one wall to armored costs 25 high quality metal. No blueprint or workbench is needed, just the hammer, building privilege and the HQM in your inventory.

How many C4 does it take to break an armored wall?

Eight C4, which is 17,600 sulfur. That is the cheapest way through an armored wall. Rockets need 15 (21,000 sulfur), satchel charges 46 (22,080 sulfur) and explosive 5.56 ammo about 799 rounds (19,975 sulfur).

How many rockets for an armored wall in Rust?

Fifteen rockets, or 21,000 sulfur. It also takes 134 high velocity rockets or a full barrage of 12 MLRS rockets with every one landing directly on the wall.

How many satchels does an armored wall take?

Forty-six satchel charges, or 22,080 sulfur. Satchels are the most expensive of the common raid explosives against armored walls, so use C4 instead.

How much upkeep does an armored wall cost?

About 3 to 8 high quality metal per wall per day, paid from the tool cupboard. Small bases pay the low end and big bases pay more per wall. With no upkeep an armored wall decays away in 12 hours.

Do armored walls have a soft side?

Yes. Melee does about ten times more damage to the soft side. A pickaxe takes about 17 hours on the hard side but only about 1 hour 40 minutes on the soft side, so always place walls so the soft side faces into your base. Explosives do the same damage to both sides.

Is it worth building an armored base in Rust?

A full armored base is rarely worth it because of the HQM cost and upkeep. Armoring the tool cupboard room and main loot room is worth it: it doubles the C4 raiders need for the walls that matter most, while stone and sheet metal cover the rest.

Can you upgrade twig straight to armored?

Yes. Pick Armored on the hammer’s upgrade wheel from any lower grade, including twig. You only pay the 25 HQM, not the cost of the tiers you skip.
