Test Generator Rust: How to Get It, Power Output, Item ID & Commands (2026)

Rust electricity guide, 2026

The test generator is the free power box of Rust. It puts out a steady 100 rW with no fuel, no sun and no wind, and it never runs down. The catch is that you cannot craft it, research it or loot it. It only exists for server admins, who spawn it to power test builds and check circuits before they wire them up for real.

This Rust test generator guide covers what it is, how admins spawn it, how much power it gives, how builders use it, how it compares to the power sources you can actually make, how much it takes to destroy one and what it recycles into.

TL;DR The Test Generator (shortname electric.generator.small, item ID -295829489) outputs a fixed 100 rW forever with no fuel. It is not craftable, not researchable and not in any loot table, so on a normal server you cannot get one. Admins spawn it from the F1 console with inventory.give electric.generator.small 1. It has 1,000 HP (1 C4 or 2 satchels) and recycles into 15 HQM, 3 gears, 2 metal pipes and 3 electric fuses.

What Is the Test Generator in Rust?

The test generator is a large, beige generator box that acts as an endless power source. It is a developer and admin tool from Rust’s electricity system, and normal players never see it.

Its internal shortname, electric.generator.small, often confuses people. The craftable fuel generator players actually build is a different item, the Small Generator (electric.fuelgenerator.small), which burns low grade fuel and only gives 40 rW.

How to Get a Test Generator

On a vanilla server there is no way for a normal player to get one. It has no recipe at any workbench, it is not on the tech tree, it cannot be researched, and it never spawns in crates, barrels or vending machines.

How to get a test generator in Rust: as an admin type inventory.give electric.generator.small 1 or inventory.giveid -295829489 1 in the F1 console; it cannot be crafted, researched or looted
Admins spawn it from the F1 console.

If you are an admin on the server, open the F1 console and type one of these:

  • inventory.give electric.generator.small 1 gives one to yourself.
  • inventory.giveid -295829489 1 does the same with the item ID.
  • inventory.giveto “player name” electric.generator.small 1 gives one to another player.

The Rust console commands guide covers the rest of the F1 console, and the Rust item IDs list has the shortname and ID of every other item.

Tip: Some modded and build servers hand test generators out in kits or sell them in shops, and plugins can change their output. If you see one on a server, that is the server’s own setup, not vanilla Rust.

Test Generator Power Output

The test generator gives a flat 100 rW, day and night, with nothing to refill. That is more than most real bases ever run at once, so one box can power a full test layout.

Rust test generator power output: a flat 100 rW that is always on, enough for auto turrets at 10 rW each, a tesla coil at up to 35 rW, an electric furnace at 3 rW, a ceiling light at 2 rW, an electric heater at 3 rW, and charging batteries for free
100 rW covers a whole test base.
DevicePower drawHow many 100 rW runs
Auto Turret10 rW10
Tesla CoilUp to 35 rW2 at full power
Electric Furnace3 rW33
Ceiling Light2 rW50

You wire it like any other power source. Run a wire from its output to a splitter, switch, battery or device, and the power flows the moment it is connected.

How Builders Use a Test Generator

The real job of the test generator is testing. Base designers and electricians spawn one on a private build server, wire up a turret system, an airlock or a battery bank, and check that every part works before they build it on a live server where mistakes cost real components.

How builders use a Rust test generator: spawn it with the admin console on a build server, wire it into the circuit with a wire tool, flip the switch and check every light, turret and door, then go live and swap in real power such as solar panels
Get the wiring right first, then build it for real.
  1. Spawn it. Use the admin console on your own server or a build server.
  2. Wire it. Connect it into your circuit with a wire tool, exactly where your real power would go.
  3. Flip it. Test switches, turrets, doors and lights and watch the power numbers.
  4. Go live. On your real server, replace it with solar panels, wind turbines or a fuel generator that give the same power.

Rust also has a built in creative mode for admins (creative.freebuild and related settings) that removes resource costs while building. Pairing creative mode with a test generator is the quickest way to prototype a whole base.

Test Generator vs Real Power Sources

Because normal players cannot get one, the real question is what to build instead. Here is how it compares to the power sources you can make yourself.

Rust test generator vs real power sources: test generator 100 rW with no fuel, admin only; small generator 40 rW on low grade fuel at Workbench 2; large solar panel 0 to 20 rW from the sun at Workbench 1; biofuel generator 5 rW from food at Workbench 1

Small Generator40 rWLow grade fuel5 HQM + 2 gears, Workbench 2
Large Solar Panel0 to 20 rWSunlightWorkbench 1
Biofuel Generator5 rWFood and dungWorkbench 1

To match one test generator on a real server you need about two and a half small generators running nonstop on low grade, or five large solar panels in full sun plus batteries for the night. The Power Plant monument is a good place to farm the electrical parts.

How to Destroy a Test Generator

You will only ever meet a test generator on a modded server, but if you need to blow one up, it has 1,000 HP.

How to destroy a test generator in Rust: 1,000 HP, 1 timed explosive charge for 2,200 sulfur, 2 satchel charges for 960 sulfur, 18 F1 grenades for 1,080 sulfur, 16 beancans for 1,920 sulfur, 4 rockets for 5,600 sulfur, or 200 normal AK rounds in about 52 seconds
1,000 HP goes down to one C4 or two satchels.

Test Generator Recycle Yield

If a server gives test generators out, recycling one pays well, since it returns parts you normally have to farm.

Rust test generator recycle yield: 15 high quality metal, 3 gears, 2 metal pipes and 3 electric fuses from a normal recycler, or 10, 2, 1 and 2 from a safe zone recycler; stack size 1 and 20 minute despawn
15 HQM, 3 gears, 2 pipes and 3 fuses.

Rust Test Generator Tips

Rust test generator tips: prototype circuits before wipe, budget your watts as if you had real power, test battery setups, check turret loads at 10 rW each, server owners should not hand it out on fair servers, and on real servers build solar, wind or a generator
Six ways to use a test generator properly.
  1. Prototype before wipe. Build your turret, airlock or battery circuit on a test server so wipe day is just copying it.
  2. Budget your watts. Free power hides mistakes. Add up what your devices draw so the design still works on real power.
  3. Test battery setups. Charge a battery from the generator and see how long it runs your base once you cut the power.
  4. Check turret loads. Every auto turret pulls 10 rW, so ten turrets use the whole 100 rW.
  5. Server owners, keep it fair. Handing out endless free power changes the game a lot on a PvP server.
  6. On a real server, build real power. Solar, wind, a small generator or a biofuel generator are what you actually get.
