Rust Bed: Cost, Sewing Kits, 2 Min Cooldown, HP & Bed vs Bag (2026)

Rust base building guide, 2026

A sleeping bag gets you back into the game, but a bed gets you back into the fight. It is the respawn point you put inside your base once you have a Workbench 1, and its short cooldown is what lets a group keep spawning in to defend a raid.

This Rust bed guide covers the craft cost, where to get the sewing kits, the respawn cooldown, where a bed can be placed, how much health it has, how it compares to a sleeping bag and beach towel, and how to destroy enemy beds.

TL;DR A Bed costs 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits at a Workbench Level 1, and the blueprint is 30 scrap. It has a 2 minute respawn cooldown, against 5 minutes for a sleeping bag, but respawning still resets your other bags and beds within 50 metres. It must be placed inside a building, has 300 HP, counts towards the 15 bag and bed limit, and one molotov burns it.

Bed Cost in Rust

Unlike the sleeping bag, the bed is not a default blueprint. You learn it by putting a bed in a research table for 30 scrap, or by unlocking it on the Workbench 1 tech tree for the same 30 scrap. After that you craft it near any Workbench Level 1 or higher.

Rust bed craft cost: 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits at a Workbench Level 1, 30 second craft, 30 scrap to research, stack size 1, recycles into 36 cloth, 60 metal fragments and 1 sewing kit with a 20% chance of a second, despawns after 20 minutes on the ground

The cloth and fragments are easy by the time you have a Workbench 1. The sewing kits are not, which is why most players run on sleeping bags for the first hour of a wipe.

Where to Get Sewing Kits for a Bed

Where to get sewing kits for a Rust bed: loot them from crates and barrels, recycle jackets, hoodies and pants to get kits back, or craft them from 20 cloth and 3 rope at a Workbench 3; a bed needs 2 sewing kits
Two sewing kits per bed.
  • Loot: sewing kits drop from roadside crates, barrels and monument crates. Keep every one you find early in the wipe.
  • Recycle clothing: a jacket returns 30 cloth and a sewing kit, and hoodies and pants often give one back. See the Rust clothing guide for every recipe.
  • Craft them: a sewing kit costs 20 cloth and 3 rope, but only at a Workbench Level 3, so this is a late wipe option.
Tip: Do not recycle spare sewing kits for rope early on. Two kits are the difference between a 5 minute and a 2 minute spawn in your base.

Bed Respawn Cooldown

The main reason to build a bed is its timer. After you place a bed, and every time you respawn on it, it goes on a cooldown of about 2 minutes. A sleeping bag or beach towel waits about 5 minutes.

Rust bed respawn cooldown: a bed has a 2 minute cooldown after placing or using it, a sleeping bag has 5 minutes, and all your bags and beds within 50 metres reset together; an Apartment Complex room with a bed
2 minutes for a bed, 5 for a bag.
  • Shared radius: when you respawn on a bed, your other bags and beds within about 50 metres also go on cooldown. Two beds side by side do not give you two fast spawns.
  • One bed per player: each teammate should have their own bed in base, so the whole group can spawn back during a fight.
  • Raid defence: a 2 minute spawn is short enough to get back into your base before raiders finish a wall. That is why a bed is worth the sewing kits.

The full rules for bag timers, the radius and giving bags to friends are in our Rust sleeping bag guide. Beds work the same way, only with the shorter timer.

Where You Can Place a Bed

A bed must be placed inside a building, on a floor or foundation in your base. It will not place out on the grass the way a sleeping bag does, so it is a base item, not a roaming spawn.

Where you can place a bed in Rust: build a floor, walls and a roof, place the bed inside on the floor, hold E to rename or assign it, and keep in mind each player has a maximum of 15 bags and beds
Beds go inside your base.
  • Assigning: look at your bed and hold E to rename it or assign it to a teammate, just like a sleeping bag.
  • Limit: beds count towards the same 15 respawn point limit per player as bags and beach towels.
  • Boats and apartments: beds can go on player-built boats (see the boat building guide), and every room at the Apartment Complex comes with a bed already in it.

Bed vs Sleeping Bag vs Beach Towel

Bed vs sleeping bag vs beach towel in Rust: the bed costs 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits at Workbench 1 with a 2 minute cooldown and 300 HP and must go inside; the sleeping bag costs 30 cloth with no workbench, a 5 minute cooldown and about 200 HP; the beach towel costs 30 cloth and works like a bag

Use sleeping bags for cheap spawns around the map, at monuments and for raids. Put a bed in your base for each teammate once you have the blueprint. A bed is also 50% tougher than a bag, so it takes a little longer to clear.

How to Destroy a Bed in Rust

Raiders and neighbours will try to remove your bed, and you will want to remove theirs. A bed has 300 HP and burns easily.

How to destroy a bed in Rust: 1 molotov, about 21 seconds with a hatchet, about 10 seconds with a salvaged hammer, about 6 seconds with a jackhammer, 7 fire arrows or 6 F1 grenades
One molotov is the cheapest way.

Fire arrows7About 18 s from a hunting bow

Never waste explosives on a bed. A molotov through a window or a few seconds with a melee tool is enough. For walls and doors, use the Rust raid calculator.

Rust Bed Tips

Rust bed tips: one bed per teammate, put the bed in the core near the tool cupboard, keep bags more than 50 metres away, save 2 sewing kits, burn enemy beds with a molotov and get the blueprint for 30 scrap at Workbench 1
Small habits that win base defences.
  1. One bed per teammate. Everyone in the group gets a 2 minute spawn at home.
  2. Bed in the core. Put it behind at least two doors, near the tool cupboard, not by a window where a molotov can reach it.
  3. Keep roam bags far away. Bags within 50 metres of your bed share its timer, so put them further out.
  4. Save two sewing kits. Do not recycle them for rope until your beds are down.
  5. Burn enemy beds. One molotov clears a bed near your base.
  6. Get the blueprint early. It is only 30 scrap on the Workbench 1 tree.

Beds also have store skins, see the Rust item store guide and the Rust skins guide.

Rust Bed FAQ

How do you make a bed in Rust?

Learn the blueprint for 30 scrap, then craft it at a Workbench Level 1 from 60 cloth, 100 metal fragments and 2 sewing kits.

What is the bed respawn cooldown in Rust?

About 2 minutes after you place it or respawn on it. A sleeping bag is about 5 minutes. Respawning on a bed also resets your other bags and beds within about 50 metres.

Why can’t I place my bed in Rust?

A bed must go inside a building, on a floor or foundation in your base. It will not place outside like a sleeping bag. You also cannot go over the limit of 15 bags and beds per player.

How much health does a bed have in Rust?

300 HP. One molotov burns it, or about 21 seconds with a hatchet or 10 seconds with a salvaged hammer.

Is a bed better than a sleeping bag in Rust?

For your base, yes. The bed has a 2 minute cooldown instead of 5 and 300 HP instead of about 200, but it needs a Workbench 1, 2 sewing kits and must go inside a building.

What does a bed recycle into in Rust?

A normal recycler gives 36 cloth, 60 metal fragments and 1 sewing kit, with a 20% chance of a second kit. A safe zone recycler gives 24 cloth, 40 metal fragments and an 80% chance of a sewing kit.
