What is the Eoka Pistol in Rust?

The Eoka Pistol is the lowest tier firearm in the game, sitting one rung above throwing a rock or a spear. The in-game description sums it up perfectly: “a very cheap, very ineffective, and very unreliable pistol that fires shells.” It is a primitive, improvised gun, the sort of thing a survivor would bodge together out of scrap on day one, and it is the first ranged weapon almost every player uses.

Mechanically it is a single-shot shotgun with no proper trigger. It loads one shotgun shell at a time and fires it by producing a spark, which is where all of its charm and all of its problems come from. Get close and it hits like a truck. Try to use it like a normal pistol and you will die holding a piece of wood while it clicks uselessly in your hands.

The Eoka fills a very specific role: the primitive-phase equalizer. Before anyone has a workbench, a bow and an Eoka are the only ranged threats on the map, so a naked with an Eoka and some nerve can still catch out a player in early armor. • Get point blank. The pellet spread is enormous, so the Eoka only deals real damage when the barrel is practically touching the target. From more than a few metres away the pellets scatter and tickle.
• Crouch and hold still. The spark tends to come faster and cleaner when you are planted and not moving, so crouch, stop, then fire. Trying to spark while sprinting around is how you die holding a clicking stick.
• Pre-fire the corner. Because of the delay, start holding the trigger before you round a corner or peek, so the shot lands the instant your target is in frame.
• Have a backup. Keep a spear, a rock or a bow ready. When the Eoka misfires in a fight, you swap instantly instead of standing there scraping.

The Eoka can fire every 12 gauge shotgun shell in the game, which is more flexible than most people realize. So the honest answer to “how many Eoka shots for a wooden door” is about 45 Handmade Shells if it is closed, and around 68 if it is open, because a wooden door gains roughly 50% resistance the moment someone opens it. That is why eco raiders try to catch a door shut. Each Handmade Shell only does around 6 damage to the door itself, since the pellets that miss the frame are wasted, so it adds up to a long, noisy two and a half minutes.

Everything above wooden is a bad idea. A wooden wall takes over 100 shells, a stone wall is effectively immune, and a Tool Cupboard is really only worth attacking with buckshot (roughly 20 shells) if you are already inside.
