Cargo Ship Rust: Spawn Timer, Locked Crates, Loot & How to Board (2026)

Rust monuments and events guide, updated October 23, 2026

The Cargo Ship is the only monument in Rust that moves. A few times a day a huge container ship sounds its horn at the edge of the map, sails a slow loop around the island with a crew of scientists on board, drops locked crates on its deck and then steams off into the fog. Every group with a boat on the server knows it is coming, which makes it one of the best loot runs in the game and one of the busiest fights.

This Cargo Ship Rust guide covers how often the ship spawns and how long it stays, the full event timeline, every way to get on board, the loot and locked crates, the scientists guarding it, how harbor docking works, the CCTV codes, the server settings behind it, what to bring and how to get off before the radiation hits. If you want a fresh ocean to hunt it on, our Rust force wipe countdown shows exactly when the next wipe lands.

TL;DR The Cargo Ship is a roaming event that spawns at the map edge roughly every 2 hours on default servers, sails for about 50 minutes and then spends 10 minutes leaving, when radiation builds up on board. It runs 3 loot rounds, 10 minutes apart, and each round can add a locked crate (a 15 minute hack), so a full run gives up to 3 locked crates plus elite, military and basic crates. It is guarded by Cargo Ship scientists (about 150 HP, MP5A4 and LR-300), not heavy scientists. Since Waves of Change (April 2024) it docks once at the first Harbor on its route for about 10 minutes, and the harbor cranes load shipping containers you can hide in to stow away. Board it with a boat and the hull ladders, a minicopter, a harbor container or by swimming.

What Is the Cargo Ship in Rust?

The Cargo Ship is a world event and a monument at the same time. It arrived in the Cargo Ship Update in 2018 and has been reworked several times since. The ship is a full size container vessel with a bridge tower at the stern, stacks of shipping containers on the main deck and two large cargo holds below, connected by stairs and ladders. Scientists patrol all of it, and the crates on board refill as the event goes on.

Because it never stays still, the Cargo Ship plays very differently from fixed monuments like the Oil Rig or Large Oil Rig. You need a way to reach it on the water, you only have a limited window before it leaves, and every other group on the server can see it on the map too. Think of it as an oil rig with a countdown that comes to you.

When Does the Cargo Ship Spawn?

On default and official servers the Cargo Ship is part of the random event schedule, and it shows up roughly every two hours. The timer is not fixed to the minute, so it can feel like it comes a little early or late. When it spawns you hear a loud ship horn across the map, and a ship icon appears out on the ocean on your map.

The ship enters at the edge of the map and follows an ocean route around the island. Since the Surviving 12 Years update in January 2026 the route no longer swings around the oil rigs, so it keeps a cleaner path between the coast and the open sea. Community servers often change the timing, and some run cargo more often or turn it off completely, so check your server’s description or our server types guide if you play on modded servers.

Watch the map You do not need to sit on the coast waiting. Keep the map open while you farm and listen for the horn. The ship moves slowly, so you have time to grab your kit and a boat before it reaches your side of the island.

Cargo Ship Event Timeline

Rust Cargo Ship event timeline: spawns with a horn at the map edge, loot round one adds a locked crate early in the run, rounds two and three come 10 minutes apart, and after 50 minutes the ship egresses for 10 minutes while radiation ramps up
One full Cargo Ship run on default settings.

Every run follows the same pattern. Knowing it tells you when to board and, more importantly, when to leave.

StageWhat happens
SpawnThe horn sounds and the ship appears at the edge of the map with scientists and starting crates on board.
Loot round 1Early in the run the first locked crate appears and the crates refill.
Loot rounds 2 and 3Every 10 minutes another round adds a locked crate and fresh loot, for 3 rounds in total.
Harbor stopIf a Harbor is on its route, the ship docks at the first one it reaches for about 10 minutes.
EgressAfter about 50 minutes the ship turns for the map edge. This takes about 10 minutes, and radiation builds up on board.
DespawnThe ship leaves the map. Anything left on board, including bodies and loot, goes with it.

The horn also sounds when a new locked crate spawns, so a group on board hears each loot round arrive. The real skill on cargo is timing: board early enough to hack all three crates, and leave before egress turns the deck into a radiation zone.

How to Get on the Cargo Ship

Four ways to board the Rust Cargo Ship: pull a boat alongside and climb the hull ladders, hide in a harbor shipping container that the crane loads onto the deck, land a minicopter on the containers, or swim and climb with no gear
Pick your way aboard by how much gear you are bringing.

There is no wrong way onto the Cargo Ship, but each method has a trade off.

  • Boat and ladder. The classic route. Drive a RHIB or rowboat alongside the hull, match the ship’s speed and climb one of the ladders on the side. Park tight to the hull so your boat drifts with the ship. Our Rust boats guide covers prices and fuel.
  • Harbor container. When the ship docks at a Harbor, the cranes lift red shipping containers onto the deck. Climb into one on the dock, close the door and let the crane carry you aboard. It is the quietest way on. Our Harbor guide explains the docking area.
  • Minicopter. Fast and great for groups that can drop in and secure the deck, but you land in full view of the scientists and of anyone else watching the ship. See the minicopter guide for controls and fuel.
  • Swimming. Free, but slow, cold and dangerous. Only worth it on a fresh spawn with nothing to lose.
Protect your boat Your boat is your only easy way off. Other groups love to sink or steal boats parked next to cargo, then pick off the players stuck on board. Leave one player on the boat if you can.

Cargo Ship Loot

Rust Cargo Ship loot: up to 3 locked crates with a 15 minute hack, several elite crates in the lower holds, many military and basic crates, with drops like Blueprint Books, assault rifles, rocket launchers, metal chest plates, targeting computers and scrap
Locked crates are the prize, but the holds are full of elite and military crates too.

The Cargo Ship is one of the richest loot runs in Rust. No keycard is needed for anything on board, so it all comes down to clearing the scientists and holding the ship long enough to loot it.

ContainerWhereWhy it matters
Locked CrateDeck and holds, up to 3 per run15 minute hack, 2 guaranteed Blueprint Books, best gun and armour odds
Elite CrateMostly in the lower holdsTop tier guns, attachments and components
Military CrateDeck, holds and bridgeGuns, ammo, components and scrap
Basic, food and tool cratesAll over the shipScrap, food, meds and building tools
Scientist bodiesWherever they fallAmmo, meds and their guns

Each locked crate takes 15 minutes to hack once you press E on its laptop, and every one carries 2 Blueprint Books. With three crates in a run that is six fragments, enough to cover a Workbench Level 3 on its own. A full cargo clear can also add well over 1,000 scrap once you recycle the components, which is why our scrap guide ranks it among the best farms in the game.

Cargo Ship Scientists

Rust Cargo Ship scientists: standard Cargo Ship scientists with about 150 HP carrying the MP5A4 and LR-300, patrolling the deck, holds and bridge, while heavy scientists only appear on the oil rigs and at the Launch Site Bradley
Cargo has its own scientist type, not the heavies from the rigs.

The ship is guarded by Cargo Ship scientists, a standard scientist type with about 150 HP. Most carry the MP5A4, and some on the bridge and fixed lookout spots carry the LR-300. They patrol the deck, the holds and the stairwells, and they react fast to gunfire.

There are no heavy scientists on the Cargo Ship. The armoured 300 HP heavies with the M249 and minigun only show up on the Small and Large Oil Rig when you hack the crate, and around the Bradley at the Launch Site. Our Rust scientists guide breaks down every type.

Close range weapons rule on cargo. The holds and stairwells are tight, so an SMG or shotgun beats a rifle once you are inside. Clear the deck from the ladder side first, then push the bridge, then work down into the holds.

Cargo Ship Harbor Docking

Rust Cargo Ship harbor docking: since Waves of Change in April 2024 the ship docks once at the first Harbor on its route, stays about 10 minutes while the harbor cranes load shipping containers, sounds its horn 60 seconds before leaving and brings its scientists with it
The Cargo Ship swings into the Harbor docking channel past the swing bridge.

The Waves of Change update in April 2024 rebuilt both Harbors with a docking channel, a swing bridge and working cranes, and taught the Cargo Ship to change course and dock. The ship only docks once per run, at the first Harbor it passes. While it is parked for about 10 minutes, the harbor cranes load shipping containers onto its deck, and you can hide in those containers to get aboard.

The ship sounds its horn 60 seconds before it pulls away from the dock. If your group is ashore looting the Harbor, that is your signal to get back on or let it go. While docked, the ship’s scientists guard the dock too, so a parked cargo is not a free walk in.

Cargo Ship CCTV Codes

Rust Cargo Ship CCTV codes for a Computer Station: CARGODECK for the main deck, CARGOBRIDGE for the bridge, CARGOSTERN for the stern, CARGOHOLD1 for the front hold and CARGOHOLD2 for the rear hold
Five cameras let you scout the ship from the safety of your base.

The Cargo Ship has five fixed CCTV cameras. Type these codes into a Computer Station to watch the ship from home and see whether another group is already on board before you leave.

Leaving the Cargo Ship and Radiation

There is no radiation on the Cargo Ship while it is sailing its route. That changes when it leaves. After about 50 minutes the ship heads for the map edge, and during the roughly 10 minute egress, radiation builds up on board until it kills anyone still there. No hazmat suit or pile of meds saves you once it ramps up.

Plan your exit before egress. Get the last locked crate open, loot it, and be back in your boat or heli while the ship is still on the map. Anything you leave on board, including your body and your bag, leaves the map with it.

What to Bring to the Cargo Ship

Rust Cargo Ship kit: MP5A4, Thompson, an assault rifle for shooting players on the hull, F1 grenades, metal facemask, metal chest plate, medical syringes and a large medkit, plus a RHIB parked tight to the hull
A cargo kit is built for close range fights and a long hold.
  • A close range gun. MP5A4, Thompson or a pump shotgun for the holds, plus an AK or LR-300 for players on boats and the deck.
  • Armour. A metal facemask and chest plate, or at least a roadsign kit. Scientists hit hard in tight spaces.
  • Meds. Syringes and medkits. A full run with three hacks can take 45 minutes.
  • F1 grenades. Great for clearing a hold or a stairwell before you push it.
  • A boat with fuel. A RHIB fits a full team. Leave one player on it if you can.

Rust Cargo Ship Tips

Rust Cargo Ship tips: scout it first with the CARGODECK camera, start hacking locked crates early because each takes 15 minutes, guard your boat because it is your way off, leave before the egress radiation, and watch the sky for minicopters and helicopters
Five habits that keep your cargo loot on your side of the map.
  • Scout first. Check CARGODECK on a Computer Station before you leave. If a big group is already on board, hit them as they leave instead.
  • Hack early. Each locked crate is a 15 minute hack, so a group that boards late will not finish all three before egress.
  • Hold the bridge. The bridge tower sees the whole deck and both ladders. Put your best shooter up there while the crates tick down.
  • Guard the boat. Most cargo wipes start when someone sinks the boats parked at the hull.
  • Watch the sky. Minicopters and attack helicopters love to third party a group that is busy looting.
  • Leave on time. Treat the 50 minute mark as a hard deadline. Radiation at egress does not care how good your kit is.

Once you can run cargo reliably, the Small Oil Rig and Large Oil Rig are the next step up, and our Rust monuments guide ranks every monument on the map.

Cargo Ship Rust FAQ

How often does the Cargo Ship spawn in Rust?

On default and official servers the Cargo Ship spawns roughly every 2 hours as part of the random event schedule. The ship horn sounds across the map when it appears. Community servers can change the timer or turn the event off.

How long does the Cargo Ship stay in Rust?

About 50 minutes on its route by default, followed by about 10 minutes leaving the map. Radiation builds up on board while it leaves, so plan to be off the ship by the 50 minute mark.

How many locked crates are on the Cargo Ship?

Up to 3 per run on default servers. The ship runs 3 loot rounds 10 minutes apart, and each round can add a locked crate. Each crate takes 15 minutes to hack and holds 2 Blueprint Books.

Are there heavy scientists on the Cargo Ship?

No. The Cargo Ship is guarded by Cargo Ship scientists with about 150 HP, mostly carrying the MP5A4 and LR-300. Heavy scientists only appear on the oil rigs and at the Launch Site Bradley.

Do you need a keycard for the Cargo Ship?

No. Nothing on the Cargo Ship needs a keycard. Locked crates are opened by pressing E on the laptop and waiting out the 15 minute hack.

How do you get on the Cargo Ship in Rust?

Drive a boat alongside the hull and climb one of the side ladders, land a minicopter on the deck, swim out and climb, or hide in a shipping container at a Harbor so the crane loads you onto the ship while it is docked.

Does the Cargo Ship dock at the Harbor?

Yes. Since the Waves of Change update in April 2024 the Cargo Ship docks once per run at the first Harbor on its route, stays for about 10 minutes while the cranes load containers, and sounds its horn 60 seconds before it leaves.

Can you sink the Cargo Ship in Rust?

No. The Cargo Ship cannot be damaged or sunk. The only way it leaves is at the end of its route, when it sails off the map and takes everything on board with it.
