If you have ever opened your Workbench 1 tech tree looking for a solar panel and could not find it, the Engineering Workbench is the reason. Since the Crafting Update in March 2025, Rust has a separate bench with its own tech tree for everything electrical, water, industrial and car related. Batteries, switches, turrets, conveyors, water pumps, car modules and engine parts all moved off the normal workbench trees and onto this one.
This engineering workbench Rust guide covers the exact 2026 craft cost, how to get the blueprint, every group of items in its tree, how many Blueprint Fragments each popular node costs from an empty tree, what you still need a normal workbench for, where it drops, what it recycles into, and the order to unlock things in on wipe day. Planning a fresh start? Our Rust force wipe countdown shows exactly when the next wipe lands.

What Is the Engineering Workbench in Rust?
The Engineering Workbench is a deployable bench whose job is to hold a fourth tech tree. The in-game description says it “allows you to craft and unlock electrical, water and industrial items”, and the game files back that up: 96 items now list the Engineering Workbench (shortname iotable) as the bench you research them on. Facepunch added it in the Crafting Update on March 6, 2025, the same update that brought the Cooking Workbench and beekeeping, to stop electrical and industrial parts clogging up the weapon and armor trees.
Think of it as a side branch next to your Workbench Level 1, not a fourth tier above Workbench Level 3. Guns, armor, explosives and building parts still come from the normal tech trees. Anything you wire, pipe or bolt onto a car comes from this one.

How to Craft an Engineering Workbench in Rust
- Build a Workbench Level 1. It costs the same 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, and you need to stand at it to craft the Engineering Workbench.
- Get the blueprint. The Engineering Workbench is not a default blueprint. Unlock its node on the Workbench 1 tech tree for 1 Blueprint Fragment (plus the node in front of it), or put a looted one in a research table with 100 scrap.
- Collect 500 wood and 100 metal fragments. One or two metal nodes in a furnace covers the fragments.
- Craft it at the Workbench 1. It takes 15 seconds and comes out as one deployable.
- Place it inside your tool cupboard range and open it to see its tech tree.
What the Engineering Workbench Unlocks
Here is everything the game files put on the Engineering Workbench tree, sorted into four groups.
| Group | Items | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical | 52 | Large Solar Panel, Wind Turbine, Water Wheel, Small Generator, all three rechargeable batteries, Switch, Splitter, Root Combiner, Branch, logic gates, Timer, sensors, RF parts, lights, Tesla Coil, Auto Turret, Computer Station, Drone, Storage Monitor, Electric Furnace, Elevator, fridges, telephone, metal detector |
| Water | 9 | Water Pump, Powered Water Purifier, small and large water catchers, Water Barrel, Fluid Switch & Pump, fluid splitter and combiner, sprinkler |
| Industrial | 6 | Industrial Conveyor, Industrial Splitter, Industrial Combiner, Industrial Crafter, Hopper, Storage Adaptor |
| Cars | 29 | All 13 car modules, the Modular Car Lift, and low, medium and high quality carburetors, crankshafts, pistons, spark plugs and valves |
A few things are not on it, even though they feel electrical. The Biofuel Generator is still a Workbench 1 tree item, and the Cooking Workbench sits on the Workbench 2 tree. The Wire Tool and Hose Tool are default blueprints, so you never unlock them anywhere. If you want to know how the power side fits together, start with our Rust electricity guide.
Engineering Tree Tiers: You Still Need the Right Workbench
This is the part that confuses people. The Engineering Workbench is where you unlock the blueprints, but each item still has its own crafting requirement. You craft a Tesla Coil at a Workbench 2 and high quality pistons at a Workbench 3, just like before. The engineering bench does not replace your normal benches, it sits beside them.
| Craft at | Items | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| No workbench | 2 | Water Barrel, Igniter |
| Workbench Level 1 | 39 | Large Solar Panel, Small Battery, Switch, Splitter, Root Combiner, Timer, Water Wheel, Industrial Conveyor, Hopper, low quality car parts |
| Workbench Level 2 | 48 | Tesla Coil, Auto Turret, Medium and Large Batteries, Wind Turbine, Small Generator, Water Pump, Powered Purifier, Industrial Crafter, Computer Station, Drone, Elevator, car modules, medium quality car parts |
| Workbench Level 3 | 7 | High quality carburetor, crankshaft, pistons, spark plugs and valves, Armored Cockpit and Armored Passenger modules |
So the usual progression still applies: you need a Workbench Level 2 before a turret or a large battery is any use to you, and a Workbench 3 before high quality engine parts are worth unlocking.
Engineering Tree Fragment Costs
Since the blueprint update on November 5, 2026, every engineering node costs 1 Blueprint Fragment, the same as the Workbench 1 tree, whatever the item’s rarity. The tree has 96 nodes, so it takes 96 fragments to clear. Rarity still sets the research table price: 52 common items at 20 scrap, 25 uncommon at 40, 18 rare at 100 and one very rare (the Auto Turret) at 300. What really matters on the tree is the path, because you pay for every node in front of the one you want.
| Item | Research cost | Path from empty tree |
|---|---|---|
| Root Combiner | 40 scrap | 5 fragments |
| Ceiling Light | 20 scrap | 5 fragments |
| Metal Detector | 40 scrap | 5 fragments |
| Modular Car Lift | 100 scrap | 5 fragments |
| Electrical Branch | 20 scrap | 6 fragments |
| Search Light | 40 scrap | 7 fragments |
| Electric Furnace | 40 scrap | 11 fragments |
| RF Receiver | 20 scrap | 12 fragments |
| Storage Monitor | 40 scrap | 12 fragments |
| Industrial Conveyor | 20 scrap | 13 fragments |
| Water Pump | 40 scrap | 13 fragments |
| Computer Station | 40 scrap | 14 fragments |
| Tesla Coil | 20 scrap | 15 fragments |
| Drone | 100 scrap | 15 fragments |
| Auto Turret | 300 scrap | 18 fragments |

Where to Find It and What It Recycles Into
You will almost always craft this bench, but it can turn up as loot. The Facepunch wiki loot tables list it in underwater advanced crates (1.1%), brown crates, wagon brown crates and Underwater Lab crates (0.4% each), and as a 0.2% drop from most scientists. That is too rare to plan around, but a looted one is worth keeping: put it in a research table and the blueprint is yours for 100 scrap.
Recycling gives back wood and metal fragments, never scrap. The amounts depend on which recycler you use:
| Recycler | Return | Wood | Metal fragments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power Plant recycler | 75% | 375 | 75 |
| Powered monument recycler | 60% | 300 | 60 |
| Unpowered monument recycler | 50% | 250 | 50 |
| Safe zone (Outpost, Bandit Camp) | 40% | 200 | 40 |
What to Unlock First on the Engineering Workbench
Most bases want the same handful of engineering items in roughly the same order. Here is a sensible route for a small group:
- Large Solar Panel and Small Battery. Free power on day one and enough to run lights, a heater or a few sensors. Read our solar panel guide for the setups.
- Switch, Splitter and Root Combiner. Cheap common nodes that let you actually route the power.
- Industrial Conveyor and Storage Adaptor (13 fragment path). Furnace and loot sorting that runs itself. Our conveyor guide has simple builds.
- Water Pump and Powered Purifier at WB2. Fresh water for farms. See the water pump guide.
- Large Battery, Wind Turbine and Auto Turret last. They are the deepest and most expensive nodes, and the turret needs a Targeting Computer you can only loot.
If you drive, slot the car path in when you find a chassis. The low quality parts are common items, 20 scrap each to research, and the vehicles guide explains which modules are worth having.
Engineering Workbench Tips
Engineering Workbench Rust FAQ
How much does the Engineering Workbench cost in Rust?
It costs 500 wood and 100 metal fragments, crafted at a Workbench Level 1 in 15 seconds. Its tech tree costs 1 Blueprint Fragment per node since November 5, 2026, 96 fragments in total.
How do you get the Engineering Workbench blueprint?
Unlock its node on the Workbench 1 tech tree for 1 Blueprint Fragment, or put a looted Engineering Workbench in a research table with 100 scrap. It is not a default blueprint.
What does the Engineering Workbench unlock in Rust?
Its tech tree holds 96 items: 52 electrical items such as solar panels, batteries, switches, the Tesla Coil and the Auto Turret, 9 water items such as the Water Pump and Powered Water Purifier, 6 industrial items such as the Industrial Conveyor and Industrial Crafter, and 29 car items including every car module and engine part.
Do you craft electrical items at the Engineering Workbench?
You unlock them on the Engineering Workbench tree, but each item keeps its normal workbench level for crafting. For example, a Large Solar Panel needs a Workbench 1, a Tesla Coil or Auto Turret needs a Workbench 2, and high quality car parts need a Workbench 3.
How much does the whole Engineering Workbench tech tree cost?
96 Blueprint Fragments for all 96 nodes, 1 fragment per node since the November 5, 2026 blueprint update (it used to be about 2,730 scrap). The Auto Turret is the deepest node at 18 fragments from an empty tree, or 300 scrap to research a looted one.
When was the Engineering Workbench added to Rust?
It was added in the Crafting Update on March 6, 2025. That update moved electrical, water, industrial and car items off the normal workbench tech trees and onto the new bench.
What does the Engineering Workbench recycle into?
300 wood and 60 metal fragments at a powered monument recycler, 375 wood and 75 fragments at the Power Plant recycler, 250 and 50 at an unpowered monument and 200 and 40 at a safe zone recycler.
Is the Engineering Workbench a Workbench Level 4?
No. It is a separate bench that sits beside the Workbench Level 1, not a tier above Workbench 3. It only holds the electrical, water, industrial and car tech tree, while weapons, armor and building parts stay on the normal workbench trees.
