Night Vision Goggles are the one piece of Rust gear that lets you see on a pitch black night without lighting yourself up for everyone else on the map. They are cheap to craft once you have the blueprint, they are sold at Bandit Camp, and the scientists inside the Missile Silo wear them to hunt you in the dark.
This Rust NVG guide covers the exact recipe and research cost, how the battery works and how to recharge it, what they protect you from and what you cannot wear with them, every place they drop with real drop chances, how they compare with the Miner Hat, Candle Hat and Flashlight, and how to get the most out of a charge.
nightvisiongoggles, ID -1518883088) craft from 10 High Quality Metal and 2 Tech Trash at a Workbench 2 in 25 seconds. Research them for 100 scrap or buy them at the Bandit Camp black market for 250 scrap. Press F to turn them on. A full charge lasts about 15 minutes and you recharge it for free by repairing them at a Workbench 2. They give 15% bullet and melee protection, take the whole head slot (no helmet), but a Bandana still fits underneath.

What Are Night Vision Goggles in Rust?
The in-game description says they enable “vision at nighttime by projecting and amplifying infrared light.” In practice you put them on, press F, and the screen turns green and bright enough to see players, bases, nodes and loot around you on a night where you would otherwise see nothing. They were added on May 7, 2020 in the Night Vision update and are a Rare attire item.
In the game files the item is nightvisiongoggles with item ID -1518883088 (see our Rust item IDs list). It stacks to 1 and despawns 40 minutes after you drop it. Admins and single player testers can spawn a pair with:
inventory.give nightvisiongoggles 1The big difference from every other way of seeing at night is that the goggles do not make light. A flashlight, Miner Hat or torch is a beacon that anyone can see from across the map. Night vision only shows as two small green dots on your face, and only to players who are already close.
How to Craft and Research Night Vision Goggles
Night Vision Goggles are not a default blueprint. You either learn them or buy a finished pair. Once you know the blueprint, the recipe is short:
| Stat | Night Vision Goggles |
|---|---|
| Recipe | 10 High Quality Metal + 2 Tech Trash |
| Workbench | Workbench Level 2 |
| Craft time | 25 seconds (game file), faster at a Workbench 3 |
| Research | 1 pair + 100 scrap at a Research Table |
| Tech tree | Workbench 2 tech tree |
| Buy | 250 scrap at the Bandit Camp black market |
| Repair | Free at a Workbench 2, no blueprint needed |
| Rarity / stack | Rare, stacks to 1 |
The cheapest route for most groups is simple: buy one pair at Bandit Camp for 250 scrap, take it home and research it for 100 scrap. From then on every pair costs you 10 HQM and 2 tech trash, which is less than a single Metal Facemask in HQM. Tech trash is the only part that runs short, because C4 eats it too.
How to Use Night Vision Goggles: Battery and Toggle
- Wear them. Drag the goggles to your clothing bar. They take the head slot, so take off any helmet first.
- Press F. The same key that toggles a flashlight turns the goggles on and off. Your screen goes green and bright.
- Watch the charge. A full battery runs about 15 minutes (900 seconds) of night vision. The goggles only drain while they are switched on.
- Recharge. When the charge runs out, repair them at a Workbench 2 or 3. Repairing is free and refills the battery, but like a diving tank each repair takes a little off the maximum condition, so an old pair holds less charge.
Night Vision Goggles Protection and What You Can Wear With Them
The goggles count as head armor. They give 15% projectile and 15% melee protection plus a small amount of bite and cold protection, which is about what a cheap hat gives you. The real cost is the slot: they cover the whole head armor layer, so you cannot wear them with a Metal Facemask, Coffee Can Helmet, Riot Helmet, Heavy Plate Helmet or a hat.
| Head item | With NVG? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bandana Mask | Yes | The only face piece that still fits |
| Metal Facemask | No | Same head armor slot |
| Coffee Can Helmet | No | Same head armor slot |
| Riot Helmet | No | Same head armor slot |
| Heavy Plate Helmet | No | Same head armor slot |
| Hats (boonie, beenie, cap) | No | Blocked by the goggles |
So wearing night vision is a trade. You see everything, but a headshot hurts a lot more than it would through a facemask. That is why most players use them to farm, loot and roam at night and swap back to a helmet for a real fight. Our Rust clothing guide has the full slot and protection breakdown for every head piece.
Where to Find Night Vision Goggles
Night Vision Goggles drop as a rare item from high tier crates and from scientists. The drop chances below are per container or per corpse, from the current loot tables.
| Source | Chance | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Treasure Mission Box | 1.6% | Mission reward boxes |
| Locked Crate | 1.3% | Chinook drops, Oil Rigs, Ghost Ship |
| Elite Crate | 0.8% | Tier 3 monuments and Underwater Labs |
| Military Crate | 0.4% | Monuments, train wagons, Underwater Labs |
| NVG Scientist | 0.3% | Inside the Missile Silo |
| Other scientists | About 0.1% | Monuments, Cargo Ship, Bradley, Oil Rig heavies |
| Bandit Camp black market | Always | 250 scrap |
Recycling Night Vision Goggles
Recycling returns most of the HQM. Yields per pair at each recycler type:
| Recycler | Returns |
|---|---|
| Safe zone recycler | 4 HQM, 80% chance of 1 tech trash |
| Monument recycler | 5 HQM, 1 tech trash |
| Powered base recycler | 6 HQM, 1 tech trash, 20% chance of a second |
| Red recycler | 7 HQM, 1 tech trash, 50% chance of 1 more of each |
Spare pairs are usually worth more kept than recycled, because each one lets a teammate roam at night.
Night Vision Goggles vs Other Ways to See at Night
| Option | Recipe | Bench | Gives you away? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night Vision Goggles | 10 HQM, 2 tech trash | WB2 | Only green eye glow up close |
| Miner Hat | 15 cloth, 10 low grade, 50 frags | WB1 | Yes, bright head lamp |
| Candle Hat | 15 cloth, 5 low grade | None | Yes, visible flame |
| Flashlight | 30 metal fragments | WB1 | Yes, and it fills a hand |
| Weapon flashlight | 3 HQM | WB1 | Yes, beam from your gun |
| Apple Pie | Apples | Cooking Workbench | No, a timed night vision buff |
The lights are cheaper and never run out as long as you have low grade, but they tell every player with eyes where you are. Goggles cost more and need recharging, and they leave your hands free for a gun or a tool. The pies are a good backup for a farming run. For brightness settings that also help at night, see our Rust graphics settings guide.
Night Vision Goggles and the November 2026 Update
The November 2026 update on November 5 reworked blueprints. Since then, researching a Rare item like the goggles costs 100 scrap instead of 60, and tech tree nodes cost Blueprint Fragments, Pages or Books instead of scrap (the goggles sit behind the Workbench 2 Heavy Plate branch, so each node costs 1 Blueprint Page). The recipe, the Bandit Camp price and the 15 minute charge did not change. Our blueprint update guide covers the new system.
Night Vision Goggles Tips
- Toggle, do not leave them on. 15 minutes goes quickly. Turn them on to scan, loot or farm, then turn them off while you run between spots.
- Always add a bandana. It is the only head piece that fits, and it costs 5 cloth.
- Keep a Workbench 2 at home. A free repair is a full recharge, so head back between runs.
- Avoid bright light. The goggles amplify light, so fires, flares and flashlights wash the picture out. They work best on truly dark nights and underground.
- Darkness is not cover at the Silo. The Missile Silo scientists wear night vision, so waiting for night does not help you there.
- Swap before a fight. Carry a facemask in your belt or bag. If you get shot at, switch to the helmet.
- Raid and roam at night. With goggles on, you see sleepers, doors and loot rooms while defenders without them are guessing. Night is also when oil rig runs are quietest.
Night and day length depend on the server, and a fresh map is the best time to have goggles ready. Check when the next wipe lands on our Rust force wipe countdown.
