Rust Food & Hunger: Best Food, Calories, Cooking & Pies (2026)

Rust survival guide, 2026

Food is the quiet stat that decides a lot of fights in Rust. A full food bar lets you heal back up between fights, an empty one slowly drains your health, and the right pie can stop bleeding, speed up healing or double how much you can eat. Most new players only notice hunger when the bar flashes red.

This Rust food guide explains how hunger works in 2026, how many calories each food gives, where to find food in the first hour of a wipe, how to cook meat without burning it, every pie and bread at the Cooking Workbench, and how to set up a farm so your team never starves again.

TL;DR Your food bar holds 500 calories. Keep it above 100 so comfort can heal you, and never let it hit zero, because starving costs health over time. Cold weather burns calories faster. The best calories per item are Brioche Bread (190), Bread Loaf (150), cooked beef or mutton (120) and cooked bear meat, beans or chocolate (100). Pies give 80 calories plus a buff, and the Rich Beef Pie doubles your food cap to 1,000 for 2 hours. Raw, burnt and spoiled meat hurt you, and a powered fridge stops food from spoiling.
How hunger works in Rust: the food bar holds 500 calories, comfort healing needs more than 100 calories, cold weather burns calories faster, at zero you start starving, raw meat spoils in 6 hours and cooked meat in 24 hours unless it is in a powered fridge, and the Rich Beef Pie doubles the cap for 2 hours

How Hunger Works in Rust

Your status bars sit in the bottom right of the screen: health, water and food. The food bar is measured in calories, and in normal play it holds up to 500. Every action burns a little of it, and it drops faster when you are cold, so a night in the snow without a jacket empties it quickly.

Here is what the food bar actually does for you:

  • Above 100 calories: comfort healing works. Standing near a campfire, a sofa, a rug or other comfort items slowly heals you, and the more comfort you have, the higher it heals you. Below 100 calories this healing stops.
  • Low but not empty: the bar turns red and the game shows a hunger warning. Nothing hurts you yet, but you are close to losing your healing.
  • At zero: you are starving and lose health over time until you eat or die.
  • Overfull: you cannot eat past the cap, so extra food is wasted. The only way past 500 is a Beef Pie (more below).

Water works the same way on its own bar. Most food also gives a little water, but meat gives almost none, so carry a water bottle or eat pumpkins and cactus in dry biomes.

Fresh spawns are hungry You spawn with a low food bar. Eat the first mushroom, corn or can of tuna you see so you are above 100 calories before your first fight, or you will not heal back up afterwards.

Best Food in Rust

Best food in Rust by calories per item: Brioche Bread 190, Bread Loaf 150, cooked beef and mutton 120, cooked bear meat 100, can of beans 100, chocolate bar 100, pumpkin 80, any pie 80, corn 75 and cooked fish 60
The top ten foods by calories per item.

The best food depends on when you are in the wipe:

  • First hour: pumpkins and corn from the roadside, mushrooms in forests, and canned food from barrels and food crates. A pumpkin is the best wild find: 80 calories, 30 water and some healing in one item.
  • Mid wipe: cooked meat from hunting. Cooked bear meat gives 100 calories, and the cows and sheep from the livestock update give 120 per cooked piece.
  • Late wipe: bread and pies from a Cooking Workbench. Brioche Bread is the most calories in one item (190), and pies add a timed buff on top of 80 calories.

Sources disagree on a few foods (potatoes, apples and berries in particular show very different numbers depending on the site and patch), so we left them out rather than guess. Calories also matter outside your stomach: the Biofuel Generator turns every 40 calories of food into 1 low grade fuel.

Where to Find Food Early in a Wipe

Free food on the Rust map for the first hour of a wipe: mushrooms, corn, pumpkins, cactus flesh, cans of tuna, granola bars, chocolate bars and cans of beans, plus fishing with a handmade rod
You do not need a gun to eat well on day one.
  1. Pick up wild food. Mushrooms grow in forests, corn and pumpkins grow near rivers and roads, and cacti in the desert give water. Pressing E on wild crops also gives you seeds for a farm later.
  2. Break barrels and loot food crates. Roadside barrels and the small food boxes at monuments drop cans of tuna, beans, granola bars and chocolate. Our Rust monuments guide shows where the loot is.
  3. Hunt with a bow or spear. Boars, deer, wolves and chickens are easy early targets, and a chicken can even be killed with a rock. Harvest the corpse with a hatchet or knife to get raw meat and cloth, then cook it.
  4. Go fishing. A handmade rod is cheap, and every fish you gut gives raw fish to cook. See our Rust fishing guide.
  5. Buy it. Shops at Outpost and Bandit Camp sell food, and player vending machines often have pies and meat for scrap.

How to Cook Meat in Rust

How to cook meat in Rust: raw meat hurts you, cooked meat is the one to eat, meat left too long burns, and old meat spoils into poison; cook on a campfire or barbeque and keep meat in a powered fridge so it does not spoil
Raw, cooked, burnt and spoiled deer meat.

Raw meat fills your food bar but damages you and gives you food poisoning, so always cook it first. Put meat and wood into any of these and turn it on:

CookerCostNotes
Campfire100 wood, no benchThe first thing you can cook on. Also gives comfort and warmth.
Barbeque100 wood, 40 metal fragmentsMore slots than a campfire, good for cooking a whole hunt at once.
FurnaceSee our furnace guideCooks meat too, but it is usually busy smelting ore.

Meat that stays on the fire after it is cooked turns into burnt meat, which damages you when eaten, so pull it out when it is done. Meat also spoils with time: raw meat spoils after about 6 hours and cooked meat after about 24 hours. Spoiled meat gives only a fraction of the calories and adds poison. A powered fridge pauses spoiling for everything inside it, and spoiled food is not wasted, because it still works in a composter or the Biofuel Generator.

Do not eat people Cooked human meat restores some hunger and health but takes away water, and raw, burnt or spoiled human meat only hurts you. It is a last resort, not a food plan.

Rust Pies and Their Buffs

Rust pies made at the Cooking Workbench and their buffs: Beef Pie bigger food cap, Hunters Pie less bleeding, Pork Pie faster healing, Bear Pie stronger harvesting teas, Pumpkin Pie more max health, Apple Pie night vision, Chicken Pie better crop genes, Fish Pie more comfort, Shepherds Pie calmer livestock, Big Cat Pie animal tracks
Every pie gives food, water, health and a buff.

Pies are cooked at the Cooking Workbench, which costs 200 metal fragments, 200 stones and 100 wood at a Workbench Level 2. It also brews every tea that the Mixing Table makes. Most pies use 3 wheat and 3 eggs plus a filling, give about 80 calories and 15 water, and add a timed buff. Each pie has a Rich version made with cream that gives a stronger or longer buff.

Exact ingredient counts vary a little between item sites and patches, so check the recipe on the Cooking Workbench before you farm for a big batch. For PvP, the Hunters Pie and Pork Pie are the ones to eat before a fight. For farming bases, the Bear Pie pairs with harvesting teas like Wood Tea and Ore Tea.

Bread and the Beef Pie

The biggest meals in Rust: Brioche Bread gives 190 calories from 5 wheat, 2 eggs and 5 cream, Bread Loaf gives 150 calories from 5 wheat, and the Rich Beef Pie doubles your food cap to 1,000 calories for 2 hours
Wheat is the backbone of late wipe food.
  • Bread Loaf: 5 wheat at the Cooking Workbench. 150 calories and 10 water, the best value food if you only farm wheat.
  • Brioche Bread: 5 wheat, 2 eggs and 5 cream. 190 calories, 13 water and 10 health over time, the most calories in one item in the game.
  • Beef Pie: added with the October 2026 livestock update. It raises your maximum food by 75% for 2 hours, and the Rich Beef Pie doubles it to 1,000 calories. A high food bar also improves your chance to get back up when you are downed.

How to Farm Food in Rust

Farming food in Rust: planters grow corn, pumpkins, potatoes and wheat, a chicken coop gives eggs for pies, cows give milk that a fridge turns into cream, beehives give honey, the Cooking Workbench needs a Workbench 2, and a composter makes fertilizer
One farm feeds the whole team.

Hunting works early, but a farm is what keeps a group fed for a whole wipe. A basic food farm has:

  • Planters: plant the seeds you got from wild corn, pumpkins, potatoes and wheat. Water them and add fertilizer for bigger harvests.
  • A chicken coop: chickens lay the eggs every pie and the brioche need.
  • Cows and sheep: milk, cream, beef and mutton from the livestock system.
  • Beehives: honey for apple pies and the honey bandage.
  • A powered fridge: to stop meat spoiling and to separate milk into cream and skim milk.

Farming bases are big targets, so build the farm inside your walls and plan for power for the fridge and sprinklers.

Rust Food Tips

Rust food tips: eat mushrooms and corn on the move, cook in batches and pull meat out before it burns, keep meat in a powered fridge, eat before fights, dress for the cold, fish early, start a chicken coop and carry pumpkins
Eight habits that stop you starving.
  • Top up before you roam. Leave base above 300 calories so one long trip does not leave you unable to heal.
  • Keep two food types on your belt. One for calories (cooked meat) and one for water (pumpkin, beans or tuna).
  • Dress for the biome. Cold drains food faster. A jacket or hoodie in snow saves food. See our Rust clothing guide.
  • Pull meat off the fire. Burnt meat is wasted and hurts you.
  • Eat a pie before a raid defence. The buffs last long enough to cover most fights.
  • Food resets on wipe. Farms, animals and stored food are gone after a map wipe. Check when the next force wipe is before you invest in a big farm late in the month.
