Arctic Research Base Rust: Puzzle, Red Card, Snowmobile & Loot (2026)

Rust monument guide, 2026

The Arctic Research Base is the snowy monument most players skip because it sits so far from everything. That is a mistake. It hands out a red keycard for a single blue card, with no fuse and no green card, and it is the only place in Rust where you can find a free snowmobile.

This Arctic Research Base Rust guide covers where it spawns, what to bring, the keycard garages step by step, the snowmobile, every crate on site, the scientists, polar bears and cold you will run into, and how it compares with the other red card monuments.

TL;DR The Arctic Research Base only spawns in the arctic (snow) biome, usually near the edge of the map. Bring one blue keycard: it opens both garages. One garage holds a red keycard and crates, the other a snowmobile with 20 low grade fuel. There is no fuse and no green card in the puzzle. Expect about 10 scientists in arctic suits, low radiation (max 11), polar bears and cold. The site has 5 military crates, 1 elite crate and 1 recycler.
Arctic Research Base Rust at a glance: the puzzle needs only a blue keycard with no fuse or green card, it rewards a red keycard plus the only snowmobile spawn in the game, about 10 arctic scientists with LR-300s, radiation median 3 and max 11, one recycler under the satellite station, tier 2 loot with military crates and one elite crate

What Is the Arctic Research Base in Rust?

The Arctic Research Base is a medium, tier 2 monument that Facepunch added in the Arctic Update in February 2022, alongside polar bears and the snowmobile. It is a fenced research camp in the snow: modular lab buildings, barracks, trailers, wind turbines, a radar tower, a large satellite station and two garages.

It is guarded by scientists in white arctic suits, and the buildings have electric heaters so you can warm up between fights. Compared with the other monuments that give a red keycard, it is the cheapest to run by a wide margin. The only real costs are the walk and the guards.

Where to Find the Arctic Research Base

The Arctic Research Base only spawns in the arctic biome, the white snow area that usually forms along the outer edge of the map. If a map has no snow, or the snow area is too small, it has no Arctic Research Base at all. Our procedural map guide explains how biomes are placed, so check the in-game map at the start of a wipe before you plan a run.

Where to find the Arctic Research Base in Rust: it only spawns in the arctic snow biome near the map edge, polar bears with 420 HP roam nearby, you need warm clothes to get there, heaters inside the buildings let you warm up, and a sleeping bag nearby saves the long trip
No snow on the map means no Arctic base.

Because it is so far out, the trip is the hard part. The snow drains your temperature, polar bears roam the biome, and the route back to your base is long. Put down a sleeping bag somewhere near the snow line before your first run so a death does not mean starting the walk again.

What to Bring to the Arctic Research Base

What to bring to the Arctic Research Base in Rust: a blue keycard that opens both garages, warm clothing like a snow jacket or Arctic Suit, a real gun for about 10 scientists, medical syringes and bandages, light radiation gear because radiation tops out at 11, and spare low grade fuel for the snowmobile
One blue card and warm clothes are the essentials.
  • A blue keycard. This is the only card the puzzle needs. Get one from the green card puzzles at the Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch or Harbor, or buy one at the Outpost. See our blue keycard guide.
  • Warm clothing. A Snow Jacket gives the most cold protection of any normal piece. The Rust clothing guide has every option.
  • A real gun. About 10 scientists guard the site. A rifle with enough ammo for a long fight is the minimum.
  • Meds. Syringes and bandages for the fights and the trip home.
  • Light radiation protection. Radiation peaks at 11, so any clothing with a little rad protection covers it. A hazmat suit is not required.
  • Spare fuel. The snowmobile comes with only 20 low grade fuel.

Arctic Research Base Puzzle: The Two Garages

There is no fuse box, switch or timer here. The whole puzzle is two garage buildings with blue keycard readers, and one blue card is enough for both because a blue card lasts several swipes before it breaks.

Arctic Research Base puzzle in Rust in four steps: clear the scientists, find the two garages with blue card readers, swipe the first garage for the red keycard and crates, swipe the second garage for a snowmobile with 20 fuel; no fuse and no green card are needed and only one blue keycard is used
Four steps, one blue keycard.
  1. Clear the scientists. They patrol the yard, the walkways and the buildings. Take them out from cover before you go near the garages.
  2. Find the two garages. They sit side by side, each with a blue card reader on the wall by the door.
  3. Swipe the red card garage. Inside, a red keycard sits on top of a box at the back, next to crates and a blueprint fragment.
  4. Swipe the snowmobile garage. The other garage holds a snowmobile, already fuelled, plus a few more crates. Load up and drive out.
Do both rooms every time The card rooms are where most of the value is. Even if you only came for the red card, the snowmobile is the fastest way to leave the snow with your loot.

The Snowmobile

The Arctic Research Base is the only place snowmobiles spawn in Rust. It comes in two models, the standard Snowmobile and the Tomaha, which work the same way.

It handles best on snow and is quick for a duo. With 300 HP it does not survive much gunfire, so do not drive it straight into a fight. Top up the tank before a long trip, because 20 fuel will not last long.

Arctic Research Base Loot

Beyond the red keycard, the monument is a solid loot run. Crates are spread through the lab modules, barracks and trailers, and both garages hold extra boxes.

Arctic Research Base loot in Rust: 1 red keycard in the card garage, 5 military crates, 1 elite crate, about 15 basic crates, 22 barrels and basic blueprint fragments as a tier 2 monument

The site has one recycler under the large satellite station, so you can break down components before the long trip home. Basic blueprint fragments from tier 2 monuments feed the workbench tech trees covered in our blueprints guide.

Arctic Research Base Dangers

Arctic Research Base dangers in Rust: about 10 scientists with LR-300s that heal up, polar bears with 420 HP, cold damage outside the heaters, low radiation with a median of 3 and a max of 11, other players who spot you easily in the snow, and a long way home
Scientists, bears and the cold, in that order.
  • Scientists. About 10 scientists in white arctic suits patrol the base with LR-300s. They heal themselves over time if you let them break off, so finish each fight instead of trading shots and backing away.
  • Polar bears. With around 420 HP they are tougher and hit harder than normal bears. Shoot them before they close the distance.
  • Cold. You lose health while freezing, so dress warm and use the heaters inside the buildings.
  • Radiation. A median of 3 and a peak of 11, the same peak as the Airfield. Light gear handles it.
  • Other players. Dark clothing stands out against the snow, and the base is a known red card run, so check the hills before you commit.

Arctic Research Base vs Other Red Card Monuments

Five monuments put a red keycard behind a blue card door. The Arctic Research Base is the only one with no fuse.

Red keycard monuments compared in Rust: Arctic Research Base needs a blue card only with no fuse and adds a snowmobile, Train Yard and Water Treatment need a blue card and 1 fuse, Power Plant needs green, blue and 1 fuse, Airfield needs green, blue and 2 fuses; spend the red card at Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Large Oil Rig, Missile Silo and the Underwater Labs

Train YardBlue19 crates in the room
Power PlantGreen + Blue14 crates in the room

The trade-off is distance and guards. The other four sit in normal biomes with fewer or no scientists, while the Arctic base saves you a fuse and a green card but asks you to cross the snow and fight about 10 scientists. Once you have the red card, spend it at the Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Large Oil Rig or Missile Silo. The full list is in our Rust monuments guide.

Arctic Research Base Tips

Arctic Research Base tips in Rust: one blue card opens both garage rooms, leave by snowmobile, scout for other players first, dress warm, use the recycler on site before leaving and carry extra low grade fuel
Six habits for a clean Arctic run.
  • One card, two rooms. Always open both garages. The blue card has the swipes for it.
  • Leave by snowmobile. It is the quickest way out of the snow with a full inventory.
  • Scout first. Watch the base from a ridge for a minute. Other players love to wait for someone else to clear the scientists.
  • Dress warm. The cold chips at you the whole trip. A snow jacket fixes most of it.
  • Recycle on site. Turn components into scrap at the recycler so your loot takes less space.
  • Carry fuel. 20 low grade fuel will not get you far, so bring a stack for the ride home.
