The Crocodile Pie is Rust’s animal repellent pie. You cook it at a Cooking Workbench from 3 wheat, 3 eggs and 2 cooked crocodile meat, and for 30 minutes after you eat it, wolves, bears, boars and sharks keep their distance and bee swarms stop chasing you. Bulls and rams won’t run, but they won’t charge you either.
The pie has sat in the game files since the May 2025 Jungle update, when item sites listed it with a night vision buff. The November 2026 Printed and Polished update gave it a working recipe, a new animal repellent effect and a Rich version. This guide covers the recipe, exactly which animals it works on, the Rich Crocodile Pie, how to farm crocodile meat and when the pie is worth eating.

What Is the Crocodile Pie in Rust?
The Crocodile Pie (shortname pie.crocodile) is one of the pies you cook at the Cooking Workbench. Every pie gives some food, water and health plus a timed buff, and since November 5, 2026 the Crocodile Pie’s buff is Animal Repellent. In Facepunch’s words, it “will intimidate nearby animals and cause them to keep their distance.”
That makes it a travel and farming pie, not a combat pie. It won’t make you stronger and it won’t help against other players, but it takes the random wolf pack, bear or shark out of a long trip. It is the opposite of the Bear Pie, which is all about boosting your harvesting teas. For every pie and what it does, see our Rust food and hunger guide.

How to Make a Crocodile Pie in Rust
The Crocodile Pie recipe is 3 Wheat, 3 Eggs and 2 Cooked Crocodile Meat. You need a Cooking Workbench, which costs 200 metal fragments, 200 stones and 100 wood and needs a Workbench Level 2 to craft.
- Cook the crocodile meat first. Raw crocodile meat will not work. Cook it on a campfire, BBQ or hobo barrel (about 15 seconds) and take it out before it burns.
- Open the Cooking Workbench and put the wheat, eggs and cooked crocodile meat into the ingredient slots, matching the recipe the bench shows you.
- Start the mix and collect your Crocodile Pie.
- For a Rich Crocodile Pie, add 4 cream to the same recipe.
Wheat comes from wild plants or planters, and eggs come from a chicken coop. Pies stack to 3, so cook three at a time and keep a stack in your main base.
Which Animals Does the Crocodile Pie Repel?
Facepunch’s patch notes name these animals. This is the clearest list there is right now.
| Animal | What happens with the pie active |
|---|---|
| Wolves | Keep their distance |
| Bears | Keep their distance |
| Boars | Keep their distance |
| Sharks | Keep their distance |
| Bee swarms | Won’t chase you, but still hurt you if you walk through them |
| Bulls and rams | Won’t flee, but won’t charge you either |
| Tigers, panthers, crocodiles, snakes | Not named by Facepunch. Item sites say “most animals”, so test it before you trust it in the jungle |
The bulls and rams line matters for anyone running a pen after the livestock rework. A Crocodile Pie lets you walk into the pen to feed, milk or shear without getting knocked around, and the animals won’t run off while you work.
Crocodile Pie vs Rich Crocodile Pie
The Rich Crocodile Pie is new in Printed and Polished. It uses the normal recipe plus 4 cream, and gives 100 calories, 19 water and 3 health. You get cream by putting milk in a powered fridge for 4 hours and skimming it.
On duration, the sources don’t line up yet. Facepunch’s patch notes say the rich version has “double the duration”, which would be 60 minutes. The item data that sites pulled on wipe day lists 30 minutes for the normal pie and 40 minutes for the rich one. We use the item data numbers on this page and will update it if a hotfix changes them. Either way, the rich pie lasts longer, so it is the one to eat before a long trip.
Where to Get Crocodile Meat in Rust
Crocodiles only spawn in the jungle biome, near swamps, riversides and lakesides, usually within 20 metres of the water. They are rare (about one per square kilometre), have 450 HP and bite for 30 to 40 damage, and they ambush from the water.
| Harvest from one crocodile | Skinning or combat knife, hatchet | Rock |
|---|---|---|
| Raw crocodile meat | 19 | 10 |
| Leather | 170 | 85 |
| Bone fragments | 170 | 85 |
| Animal fat | 120 | 60 |
| Cloth | 30 | 15 |
With a good blade, one crocodile gives 19 raw meat, which is 9 Crocodile Pies once cooked. The 120 animal fat is also some of the best fat in the game for low grade fuel. Raw crocodile meat spoils after 6 hours, and cooked crocodile meat after 24 hours, so cook it as soon as you get home.
Best Uses for the Crocodile Pie
- Long gathering trips. Wolves and bears are a common way to lose a full inventory of ore or wood. With the pie active, they keep away and you can farm without stopping to fight.
- Swimming and diving. Sharks keep their distance, which makes swimming out to boats, rigs and underwater loot much safer.
- Bee farming. Bee swarms won’t chase you, so you can work your hives with less damage. Walking straight through a swarm still hurts.
- Livestock pens. Bulls and rams won’t charge you while you feed, milk or shear. See our livestock guide.
- Not for hunting. If animals keep their distance, the boar you want for meat runs away too. Don’t eat one before a hunt.
Is the Crocodile Pie Worth It?
Yes, for solos and small groups who farm alone in animal-heavy areas, and for anyone who swims a lot. A single crocodile turns into nine pies, and 30 minutes of no wolf or bear trouble is worth far more than the wheat and eggs it costs. It is less useful for big groups who move together and can shoot any animal that shows up, and it does nothing in a fight with players, so it never replaces armor, meds or a gun.
If you only make one pie for farming, the Bear Pie still gives you more resources per minute. The Crocodile Pie is the one that keeps you alive long enough to carry them home.
Rust Crocodile Pie Tips
- Cook croc meat fast. Raw crocodile meat spoils in 6 hours.
- Fight crocodiles from land. Never follow a wounded croc into the water. Use a bow or gun from the bank.
- Eat it right before you leave base. The timer starts when you eat it.
- Cook three at a time. Pies stack to 3 per slot.
- Use the Rich pie for long trips. It lasts longer and gives a bigger meal.
- Don’t eat it before a hunt. Your prey will keep away from you.
- Bees can still sting. Swarms stop chasing you, but walking through one still hurts.
- Remember players. The pie makes animals keep away, not people.
