You have probably walked past one at Junkyard or Oxum’s Gas Station: a rusty oil drum with a fire roaring out of the top. That is the Hobo Barrel, and a lucky slice of the player base can build their own. It does everything a campfire does, it just looks a lot better doing it.

What Is the Hobo Barrel in Rust?
The in-game description says it all: “A vagabond staple. Use this repurposed oil barrel to stay warm.” In practice it is a wood-burning cooker. You place it, put wood in the fuel slot, light it, and it gives off light and heat, cooks your meat and turns burnt wood into charcoal. Players standing next to a lit barrel also get comfort, which helps your health tick back up, and it dries you off after a swim.
Mechanically it is a campfire in a taller body. The game files even keep it under a “twitch” prefab folder, because it started life as a drop reward. Its shortname is hobobarrel and its item ID is -1442559428 (see our full Rust item IDs list). It stacks to 1 and despawns 5 minutes after you drop it.
How to Get the Hobo Barrel in Rust
The Hobo Barrel is a Steam item unlock, not a blueprint you can find or research. It was a general reward in the big January 2021 Rust Twitch drops event, which ran from January 7 to January 14, 2021. Watching any participating stream for 8 hours with your Twitch and Steam accounts linked earned it.
If that item is in your Steam inventory, the Hobo Barrel shows up in your crafting menu on every server and every wipe. If it is not, you cannot craft it. The drop window is long closed, and it has not been part of any recent round on our Rust Twitch drops tracker. Some old drop items do appear on the Steam Community Market, but we could not find a live listing price for the Hobo Barrel, so check the market before you count on buying one. What Can You Cook in a Hobo Barrel?
Drop wood in the fuel slot, put raw food in the other slots and turn it on. Pull food out once it is cooked, or it keeps going and burns. These are the times from the Facepunch wiki:

Where to Find Hobo Barrels in Rust
Even without the drop you can use a hobo barrel. Several monuments place static, always-lit ones as world props:
- Junkyard: 2 barrels, handy while you wait on the shredder.
- Apartment Complex: 2 barrels.
- Oxum’s Gas Station: 1 barrel on the forecourt by the fuel pumps.
These give warmth and light, which matters on snow maps (see our biomes guide). They are part of the monument, so you cannot pick them up.
Recycle, Repair and Pickup
A recycler gives back part of the 100 wood:

The better move is to pick it up. Empty the fuel and food slots, equip a hammer, and pick it up while you are authorised on the Tool Cupboard. You get the whole barrel back. A damaged barrel repairs with 50 wood and the hammer. It is fragile, so a few shotgun shells or a short burst of rifle fire breaks it, and any explosive one-shots it.
Hobo Barrel Tips
- Turn it off when you are done. It keeps burning wood with nothing in it.
- Keep the charcoal. Every burnt wood has about a 75% chance to leave charcoal, which feeds your gunpowder.
- Use it on cold maps. Warmth near the barrel saves you from freezing in snow until you have a snow jacket.
